Premiere Pro's First AI-Powered Video Editing Tool Is Available Now: Here's How It Works
Katelyn is a writer with CNET covering social media, AI and online services. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in media and journalism. You can often find her with a novel and an iced coffee during her time off. AI video technology is ramping up, and Adobe is bringing its most recognizable AI editing tool out of beta. Generative extend is now the first Firefly-powered tool in Premiere Pro, coming out of beta alongside a few other features. "Generative Extend is the first Firefly-powered feature in Premiere Pro, and the first tool of its kind to help editors seamlessly extend video and audio frames to achieve perfectly timed edits," Ashley Still, senior vice president and general manager of digital media at Adobe, told CNET exclusively in an email. "This is just the beginning of how Firefly in Premiere Pro can revolutionize video production with the precision and power only Adobe can deliver." Adobe has a mix of tools that are AI-powered and those that create new elements using AI; Wednesday's announcement includes both. Generative extend is an AI creation tool, which can be used to create a few seconds of film that lengthens your existing clips. It can be used in cases where you wish you had a few extra seconds of a scene, using your footage as the base and creating new frames to extend the moment. Now, Premiere Pro editors will be able to render those extensions in 4K and for vertical videos, thanks to updates to generative extend. On the non-generative AI side, the features coming out of beta should help you navigate Premiere and refine your content without needing to leave the program. Adobe is also bringing two AI-powered tools out of beta, including an smart search panel called media intelligence and AI caption translation tool. Adobe's been all-in on AI for a while now. Adobe launched its Firefly AI video generator in February, which is capable of creating five-second-long videos entirely from generative AI. There has also been a number of AI updates to Photoshop, in addition to its AI image generator. Here's what you should know about the new AI upgrades in Premiere Pro. For more, check out all the major AI video models available now and coming soon. Generative extend is one of Premiere's most prominent AI features. You can create a few extra seconds at the beginning or end of your clips if you needed another second or two of footage before going into the next scene. Adobe launched the beta of generative extend in October 2024. Now, those AI clips can be rendered in 4K and vertically in the regular version of Premiere. To extend a clip, select the generative extend tool from your toolbar (it looks like a vertical bar with two arrows pointing in opposite direction covered in stars) and drag out the clip another 1 to 2 seconds. Whenever you create or extend clips with AI, Premiere Pro will label them as AI-generated in your timeline. You can try out generative extend for free for what Adobe calls a "limited time" before it will start using Firefly generation credits. If you've just got Premiere Pro, you get 500 monthly generation credits. The full Creative Cloud package bumps that number up to 1,000. The amount of credits you'll use on each extension will depend on the clips you generate -- a higher resolution extension will likely use more credits, for example. Adobe's AI policy states that it doesn't train AI models on its users' content. One of the first things you figure out when you start learning how to edit in Premiere is the importance of naming your clips and organizing files in your library, so that you can find specific clips later and avoid those dreaded "media not found" error messages. But anyone who's done that knows it's a tedious and time-consuming task. That's where the new media intelligence panel can help. Media intelligence is a kind of advanced search panel that aims to make it easier to find specific clips. You can still search by file name and location, but media intelligence can recognize certain elements in clips and pull them -- subjects like "skateboarders" or technical elements like lens flares, or both, clips of people skateboarding where there's a lens flare. The idea is to make it easier to find the clips you need, even if the files aren't named after the subject or include the keyword you're using to search. Media intelligence uses clips' metadata, including shoot date and camera type -- meaning you can get really specific with your searches. It can also highlight sections of longer videos, so if you want one question from a taped interview, you can search for that without having to scrub the whole video searching for that one part. Media intelligence runs locally on your computer and doesn't read or store information about your clips. Premiere Pro's auto-captioning is also getting upgraded to include translations. Adobe said it has heard from users that they want the ability to add captions in multiple languages on the same clip, and the new tool lets you do that without leaving Premiere. You can already automatically generate transcripts of your videos, and from there, you can add captions. With the new feature, you can transcribe those captions into 27 different languages, including Spanish, German, French and Japanese.

Adobe brings four highly-requested Premiere Pro AI features out of beta
Now generally available, the AI tools include Generative Extend, Media Intelligence, Auto-Translate caption, and more. Here's what they can do. Adobe has continually implemented AI features into its suite of applications to help creatives build and execute projects more seamlessly. Now, it's bringing some of Adobe Premiere's cutting-edge AI features out of beta so that more users can benefit. Also: I've tried lots of AI image generators, and Nvidia and MIT's is the one to beat for speed On Tuesday, Adobe made several features -- Generative Extend, Media Intelligence, Auto-Translate caption, and Premiere Color Management -- generally available in Premiere Pro. The release incorporates feedback collected from the beta and features new, highly requested tools. The Generative Extend feature creates new frames for video shots to extend the clip a bit longer. Like Photoshop's viral Generative Fill, this feature adds more content necessary to complete your project, even if you didn't initially capture it. Using it is simple: Select Generative Extend, drag the clip out, and watch it generate the new content in the background. The feature is powered by Adobe Firefly, meaning that the added clips boast the same protections as those used with Firefly models, including being commercially safe, protected from indemnification, and adding Content Credentials. The feature can now add an extra 4K frames, so you don't have to sacrifice quality. Also: ChatGPT's new image generator shattered my expectations - and now it's free to try Currently, Generative Extend is available for users to try out at no additional cost. However, according to Adobe, it will eventually transition to using Firefly generative credits depending on the generated clip's format, frame rate, and resolution. If you have edited a project in Premiere, you are likely familiar with the struggle of finding the right clip to add to your project's edit. Media Intelligence uses AI to help you filter through all the prompts using natural language that describes the scene or angle or includes a spoken word or element from the metadata, such as the shoot date or the camera type. I watched a demo of the feature in action. It's as simple as using a term such as "close-up shots" to sort through your media library and populate the clips that meet that criteria. This media analysis takes place on your system, meaning you don't need to rely on the internet to use it. Adobe also lets users know their data is never used to train the models. Adding captions to your projects is a good way to increase accessibility and ensure your content reaches a wider audience. However, this process is often lengthy and costly, relying on third-party services. Now, with the help of AI within Adobe, users can automatically translate captions into 27 languages. Multiple closed caption tracks in different languages can be generated and visible simultaneously. This can be helpful for your audience and for helping you work through the edit if the content is in a language you don't understand. Creatives often prefer recording raw or log videos to give them more control and options when editing. However, before editing, the video can be dull and gray. To combat this issue, Premiere Color Management Premiere Pro can transform your original files directly into SDR or HDR without using look-up tables. Additionally, Premiere Color Management has a new wide-gamut color pipeline that allows Premier to utilize the clips' log and raw data for an improved experience and options when color grading in Lumetri. Although these settings may sound complicated, Premiere Color Management is easy to use since all editors must do is select one of six new color management presets. In addition to all of Premiere Pro's features, After Effects also received a revamp. Some of the new features include 3D tools such as Animated Environment Lights, the native integration of 3D FBX models, new one-click menu items, new HDR monitoring, and a new High-Performance Preview Playback caching system. The Adobe blog post has the full list of After Effects features.

Adobe launches Premiere Pro's generative AI video extender
Jess Weatherbed is a news writer focused on creative industries, computing, and internet culture. Jess started her career at TechRadar, covering news and hardware reviews. Adobe is updating Premiere Pro with AI-powered features that aim to provide creatives with faster and better video editing results. Version 25.2 of Premiere Pro is launching today, bringing tools for locating, translating, and extending video footage out of beta and into general availability for every user. The most notable is Generative Extend, which Adobe announced in October as one of the first tools powered by its Firefly generative AI video model. The feature allows users to extend clips by up to two seconds, providing more options for transitions or correcting unexpected movements without having to reshoot footage. Generative Extend can now generate clips in 4K quality and will extend ambient background audio -- up to ten seconds for audio alone, or two when paired with video extension -- though this won't extend speech or music. Generative Extend is completely free to use for a "limited time," according to Adobe, after which the feature will require users to spend Firefly generative credits. Creative Cloud subscriptions provide a monthly allocation of credits ranging between 25 to 1,000 credits depending on the plan. An additional Firefly credit subscription is also available starting from $10, which grants 2,000 credits per month. Adobe has not specified how many credits the Generative Extend feature will eventually consume, but says that "price will vary based on the format, frame rate, and resolution of your video." The latest version of Premiere Pro also includes the new AI-powered Search panel that automatically recognizes the content of clips within your video library. This enables users to search for footage using text descriptions that include objects, locations, camera angles, and effects, such as looking for "close-ups of hands working in a kitchen." Another feature, Premiere Color Management, automatically transforms log and raw files directly to SDR or HDR without lookup tables to make it easier to jump right into editing, alongside a new wide-gamut color pipeline. Premiere Pro can now also use AI to automatically translate video captions into 27 different languages, with users able to display multiple caption tracks simultaneously during editing. Adobe also says that the Premiere Pro update provides better speed and performance across both Apple silicon and Windows devices. The latest version of Premiere Pro is launching alongside After Effects 25.2, which provides new HDR monitoring capabilities, animation controls, support for 3D FBX models, and animated environmental light effects. A new High Performance Preview Playback feature also makes it easier to preview longer compositions thanks to a new caching system that utilizes both RAM and local disks, rather than RAM alone.

Adobe Finally Adds AI Video Extend to Premiere Pro (and AI Search, Too!)
Adobe has been teasing a generative AI feature that lets you extend video clips to fit your timeline for nearly a year, and the tool is finally good to go. At NAB 2025, the company also announced AI search for clips based on their contents, called Media Intelligence, and the ability to translate captions to 27 languages and transform log and raw video to SD or HD without the need for LUTs. After Effects gets more 3D tools, HDR monitoring, and high-performance playback. And frame.io users get five to 15 times the storage (depending on account level), searchable transcription (in beta), and expanded text markup capability. Generative Extend The Generative Extend AI feature, powered by Adobe's Firefly AI technology, works with 4K and vertical video as well as audio. Don't expect it to turn a social short into a feature film, though: It's limited to 10 seconds of content. That's fairly standard for AI-generated video these days, though some companies such as Magic Light and are pushing that limit out. OpenAI's Sora, for example, generates 10 seconds of 720 footage for $20-a-month ChatGPT Plus subscribers; moving up to 20 seconds at 1080p requires a $200-a-month Pro subscription. Using Generative Extend is simple; select the cursor with the stars on it and drag the edge of the clip you want to extend. You can then continue editing while waiting for the area to be filled with the generated content, which requires cloud processing. In a briefing, Adobe reps suggested some good use cases for Generative Extend, like location shots where you can't go back and shoot more video, or when a b-roll subject scratches their face or looks the wrong way suddenly. You get the idea. Lest you think that Generative Extend is simply a new Premiere Pro feature included with your Creative Cloud subscription, let me disabuse you of that impression. After some initial free testing, you need to spend Generative Credits just as you do when you perform generative AI actions with Firefly and the other Creative Cloud apps. According to Adobe, "The price will vary based on the format, frame-rate, and resolution of your video." Different account levels get varying number of credits. As with the company's other generative AI tools, this one is deemed "commercially safe," meaning you won't run into IP issues, and Content Credentials metadata is attached to its generated output to let the world know that AI was used to create the content. I have yet to try this new feature, but look for an update to my Premiere Pro review for testing results in the coming weeks. Media Intelligence This new media search tool resembles those we've seen in photo software like Lightroom and Google Photos, where you can type in "bird" and the app shows you all your photos containing avian life. It's a wonderful timesaver. Well, this now applies to video clips in Premiere Pro. It lets you find clips based on "objects, locations, camera angles or metadata like shoot date or camera type," according to Adobe. You can also search on dialog. Auto-Translation for Captions In previous updates, Adobe added AI-powered auto-captioning based on your video's spoken audio. Now, in addition to translating captions into a choice of 27 languages, Premiere lets you display multiple caption tracks at once. New Color Management Tools As savvy photographers know, working with raw images gets you way more leeway when it comes to editing the look of your image in postproduction. The same, of course, holds true for video, though log is usually used instead of fully raw footage. Premiere now displays such footage in living color, rather than the washed-out view seen on log and raw footage. You'd normally have to apply LUT corrections, but this feature makes the change on-the-fly as you import the footage. Adobe claims that it "works automatically for most camera formats." Also new in the world of color are a new wide-gamut color pipeline using the ACEScct color space and three new wide-gamut color management presets in addition to the old-school Rec.709. And There's More! Finally, Adobe highlighted a few less headline-grabbing new features that may nevertheless be even more significant to some editors:

Adobe Premiere Pro Update Adds 4K Generative Extend, New Search Panel, and Much More
The newest version of Adobe Premiere Pro brings new AI-powered features, workflow improvements, and more tools to help video editors work smarter, better, and faster. Adobe Premiere Pro 25.2 brings the public release of the Firefly-powered Generative Extend feature that has been in beta testing for a while now. Even in beta, this feature has impressed, but in Premiere Pro 25.2, it promises to be even better. Generative Extend now supports 4K resolution, up from Full HD during beta testing, enabling filmmakers and video editors to add up to two seconds of footage and audio or 10 seconds of just audio. "Powered by Adobe Firefly, Premiere Pro will seamlessly add extra 4K frames so you have enough media to cover transitions, hold on an emotional reaction for an extra beat, or add in missing ambient sounds and/or room tone," Adobe explains. "Generative Extend works in the background while you continue to edit and clips are marked with Content Credentials so viewers know where AI was used." For now, Generative Extend will be free, meaning it doesn't consume any Firefly generative credits. However, once this promotion ends, time to be determined, Firefly generative credit consumption will vary based on format, framerate, and video resolution. Premiere Pro 25.2 also includes AI-powered Media Intelligence and an all-new Search panel. This enables users to search through hours of footage in seconds. Premiere Pro automatically recognizes the subject of imported video clips, including objects, locations, camera angles, and more. Editors can search for the perfect clip using natural language terms. Adobe provides a few example search terms, including "close-ups of hands working in a kitchen" or "overhead shots of plates of food." It's also possible to search for specific dialogue or other spoken words, as Premiere Pro also analyzes all audio content. Provided that metadata is available, users can also search for things like shoot date, camera settings, and camera type. All the video and audio analysis is performed entirely on the device and not reliant on an internet connection. Building upon last fall's Premiere Pro update that added automatic tone-mapping of log and RAW video formats from a diverse range of cameras, Premiere Pro 25.2 adds enhanced support for more log and Raw files and SDR and HDR workflows. When log or RAW video is imported into Premiere Pro, the software automatically transforms the footage into SDR or HDR workspaces without requiring LUTs. "No more dealing with washed-out, gray-looking video," Adobe promises. "Additionally, Premiere Color Management provides you with a new wide-gamut color pipeline using industry-standard ACEScct as your working color space. With our new color pipeline, Premiere can utilize all the log and raw data of your source clips for more dynamic range and control for color grading in Lumetri. It makes matching multiple cameras, perfecting skin tones, and dialing in the mood and tone of your videos more flexible and fun than ever before," Adobe continues. For those who want a more familiar color pipeline, the default preset, Direct Rec.709, recreates a classic look to allow editors to continue working on legacy projects without any problems. After Adobe introduced Text-Based Editing to Premiere Pro in 2023, customers began requesting improved captions and translations. "Now we're fulfilling this top request so you can automatically translate your captions into 27 languages with AI," Adobe says. Captions are essential and more important than ever as people and brands share content across more markets and regions. As Adobe says, captions are important for accessibility and engagement. Premiere Pro supports automatic translations into 27 languages using AI, and the app supports multi-track captions, enabling users to translate their content into multiple languages at once. Alongside these more significant new features and improvements, Premiere Pro 25.2 promises overall speed improvements, new dynamic waveforms that grow and shrink as the user adjusts volume eves, sequence label colors, and more. Adobe has also wholly rewritten support for H.264 in MP4 and MOV, providing up to four times better performance on Apple Silicon and twice as fast on Windows machines. Premiere Pro also features hardware-accelerated Canon Cinema RAW Light support on Apple Silicon, resulting in four times faster playback on the timeline and up to nine times faster exporting. "Plus, we've been working with Nvidia to introduce faster than real-time playback for popular formats including H.264 and HEVC 10-bit 4:2:2. Editors using Premiere Pro (beta) with newer Windows systems get GPU-powered decode acceleration using Nvidia Blackwell GPU Architecture," Adobe adds. This will result in smoother timeline responsiveness, editing camera original files, and reduced CPU load. Adobe Premiere Pro version 25.2 is available to all subscribers now. Adobe notes that Premiere Pro will offer complimentary Firefly generations with Generative Extend "for a limited time."

Adobe Premiere Pro updates bring some serious AI power
Other under-the-hood updates include faster processing and performance Adobe has launched version 25.2 of Premiere Pro, its video editing software, including even more advanced features, and of course, artificial intelligence makes more than just one appearance. Some of the highlights include Generative Extend, powered by Firefly, automatic caption translation to over 27 languages and additional GPU accelerated format support for better processing capabilities. Key to the updates, Adobe says many of the new features are based on customer feedback, including the automatically translated captions, which were demanded after the creative giant launched text-based editing in 2023. Taking the headlines, AI-powered Generative Extend is one of the most noteworthy features coming to version 25.2, including 4K and vertical video support. With the tool, video editors can extend video clips up to two seconds and ambient audio up to 10 seconds to fill gaps, hold shots or create transitions even if they don't have the full footage required. Paul Saccone, Senior Director of Product Marketing for Professional Video at Adobe, confirmed users can try out Generative Extend for free for "a limited time," after which they'll need to use Firefly generative credits, with exact costs determined by video format, frame-rate and resolution. Another update makes "fly[ing] through hours of footage and find clips fast[er]" with thanks to even more AI. Users can search for objects, locations, camera angles and more to find exactly the clips they need even in the largest libraries. The company stressed this analysis happens locally and offline, and that user content is not used to train its AI models. Auto translation of captions also happens with AI assistance - the functionality now works with 27 languages, and editors can see multiple caption tracks at the same time to ensure consistency and quality. Other smaller but no less useful changes include dynamic waveforms for better audio level visual representation, rewritten support for H.264 in MP4 and MOV for up to 4x performance increase on Apple silicon and hardware-accelerated Canon Cinema RAW Light on Apple silicon computers for up to 9x faster export.

Adobe Premiere Pro Is Now Getting AI-Powered Generative Extend Feature
Adobe After Effects is adding a modern caching system for quick playback Adobe is rolling out several new features for Premiere Pro and After Effects. Announced on Wednesday, these features will be showcased at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show 2025 in Las Vegas. The company says it took feedback from professional editors and motion designers and is now introducing artificial intelligence (AI) workflow features and improvements to its platforms. Most notable is the Generative Extend feature in Premiere Pro, which will allow users to extend clips using Firefly-generated footage in 4K resolution. In a blog post, the company detailed the new features which are currently rolling out to both Premiere Pro and After Effects. Apart from Generative Extend, Premiere Pro is getting an AI-powered search panel, the Premiere Colour Management tool, and auto translation capabilities. The Generative Extend feature was first unveiled by Adobe last year, and is now rolling out to users. It is powered by the company's native Adobe Firefly video generation AI model. The feature enables users to extend their clips with additional AI-generated 4K frames. Users can add a text prompt to generate desired footage and audio. The company says this will offer editors more options for transitions and compensate for unexpected cuts and movements without having to reshoot. Generative Extend can add up to two seconds of video clips or up to ten seconds of ambient background audio. The two modalities can be paired for two seconds of footage. The tool cannot add or extend music or speech. For a limited time, Generative Extend will be available for free to Premiere Pro users, Adobe said. After that, creating AI-generated clips will cost Firefly generative credits, where the amount of credits will depend on the format, frame-rate, and video resolution. Users can get a monthly allocation of credits between 25 to 1,000 with Creative Cloud subscription plans. In India, a Creative Cloud subscription for Adobe Premiere Pro is priced at Rs. 733.96 a month. Another introduction is a new AI-powered search panel along with Media Intelligence technology. The tool enables editors to find the desired clip from the library using a natural language search query. Adobe says the tool can recognise objects, locations, camera angles, and more. Additionally, users can also search for visuals, spoken words, or embedded metadata such as shoot data or camera type. It is an on-device feature, so users do not require an Internet connection to search for footage. The company says users' data is not used to train AI models. Adobe is also adding the Premiere Colour Management tool to Premiere Pro. It is an easy-to-use colour management tool that adds colour profiles to log and raw camera footage. There are six presets that editors can quickly select from, or use the customisation setting to play around with a wide range of options. Further, Premiere Pro is also getting the capability to automatically translate video captions into 27 languages using AI. After Effects is also getting some significant improvements. With the new High Performance Preview Playback feature, the platform now uses the computer's RAM and local disks together to re-cache compositions, essentially allowing users to preview their entire composition without long wait times. It is also getting improvements in making 3D compositions and HDR monitoring.
