Apple is ramping up development of three AI-powered wearables: smart glasses targeting 2027 launch, an AI pendant that serves as iPhone's eyes and ears, and camera-equipped AirPods. All three devices integrate Siri with visual context capabilities to compete with Meta and OpenAI in the AI hardware race.

Apple AI Wearables Signal Major Hardware Push

Apple is accelerating development of three new AI-powered devices as the company shifts strategy to compete in the emerging AI hardware market, according to a

Bloomberg

report. The company is ramping up work on smart glasses, an AI pendant, and camera-equipped AirPods, all built around the Siri digital assistant with enhanced visual context capabilities. Each product will link to the iPhone and depends on a camera system with varying capabilities, positioning Apple to compete directly with Meta and OpenAI in AI-powered wearable products.

At an all-hands meeting earlier this month, CEO Tim Cook hinted at the company's aggressive push into AI-powered devices, stating Apple is working on new "categories of products" enabled by artificial intelligence. "We're extremely excited about that," he said, adding that "the world is changing fast." The announcement comes as Apple plays catch-up in AI while iPhone sales remain robust, with the company preparing a chatbot-like Siri interface for iOS 27 using underlying models co-developed with Google.

Smart Glasses Target 2027 Launch as All-Day AI Companion

The smart glasses, code-named N50, represent Apple's most advanced offering in its AI hardware lineup. Apple has made significant progress in recent months, distributing broader sets of prototypes within its hardware engineering division and targeting production as early as December, ahead of a 2027 public release

. The glasses will include a high-resolution camera capable of capturing photos and video, designed to compete directly with Meta's camera-equipped eyewear.

Like most of Meta's current offerings, the glasses won't include a display. Instead, the interface relies on speakers, microphones, and cameras, letting users make phone calls, access Siri, take actions based on surroundings, play music, and capture images. The device features two camera lenses: one for high-resolution imagery and another dedicated to computer vision technology similar to what's used in the Vision Pro. This second sensor provides environmental context, helping the device interpret surroundings and measure distances between objects.

The goal is for the glasses to function as an all-day AI companion, capable of understanding what a user is seeing and doing in real time

. Wearers could look at an object and ask what it is, inquire about ingredients in a meal, or get assistance with everyday tasks. Apple is also exploring advanced uses like reading printed text and converting it into digital data.

AI Pendant Serves as iPhone's Eyes and Ears

The AI pendant represents Apple's attempt to create a wearable that serves as the "eyes and ears" of the iPhone, according to employees familiar with the project. The Information previously described the device as a thin, flat, circular disc with an aluminum-and-glass shell featuring two cameras, a speaker, and three microphones.

Bloomberg

notes the pendant is "reminiscent of the failed Humane AI Pin" but with critical differences.

Unlike the Humane AI Pin, which attempted to function as a standalone product, Apple's pendant will rely heavily on an iPhone for processing and won't include a display or projector system. Users can wear the device with a clip attached to clothing or as a necklace, providing an always-on camera for the smartphone with microphone input for Siri integration with cameras. One area of debate involves whether to include a speaker, which would allow users to hold conversations with the device directly without wearing AirPods or reaching for their iPhone.

The pendant, along with camera-equipped AirPods, is envisioned as a simpler offering equipped with lower-resolution cameras designed to help the AI work rather than for taking photos or videos

. The product remains early-stage and could still be canceled, but could launch as early as next year if Apple proceeds with development.

Camera AirPods Expand AI Capabilities

Apple continues work on camera-equipped AirPods that could launch as early as this year, representing the most imminent addition to the company's AI-powered wearable products lineup. Like the pendant, these AirPods will feature lower-resolution cameras focused on providing visual context to enhance Siri's capabilities rather than serving as primary imaging devices.

The accelerated push into wearables comes after Apple's last major category launch, the pricey Vision Pro headset, failed to resonate with consumers. The company is looking for a breakthrough to keep users locked into the Apple ecosystem as AI changes how consumers use phones, with more activities shifting to peripherals. Apple initially explored partnerships with popular frame brands for its glasses, following the industry trend of Meta working with EssilorLuxottica and Google teaming with Warby Parker, but ultimately decided to develop its own frames in-house in various sizes and colors.

Early prototypes of the glasses connected via cable to a standalone battery pack and iPhone, but newer versions embed components in the frame using high-end materials, including acrylic elements for a premium feel. Apple is already discussing launching the device in additional styles over time, signaling confidence in the platform's potential to compete in the rapidly evolving AI hardware market.
