OpenAI rolled out a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature for ChatGPT on Friday. The new feature, dubbed Projects in ChatGPT or just Projects, allows users to create specific chat folders where they can ask questions about the same topic or about topics with the same context. With the ability to add files in Projects, the feature is similar to Google's NotebookLM. The AI firm highlighted that while the paid subscribers of the chatbot will get the feature in the next few days, Edu and Enterprise users will get it by January 2025. On day seven of the company's 12-day shipping schedule, Projects in ChatGPT was released. The feature was announced during a live stream and was later posted by the AI firm's official handle on X (formerly known as Twitter). Currently, the feature is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users globally. Free users will also get this feature eventually, but OpenAI did not mention any release date for it. On the surface, Projects can be understood as an organising tool that allows users to segregate chats by topics. This is useful when a user asks frequent questions about the same topic and does not wish to add full context every time. For instance, users can create a Project titled "Research Assignment" and tell the chatbot to respond to queries as an expert in the field. This way, they do not have to repeat the instructions as long as they use the same Project. However, the feature can also be a very useful research tool with its Google NotebookLM-like capabilities. Just like Google's platform, Projects also allows users to add files. Once added, every response by ChatGPT keeps the context of the documents in mind. Users can also use this capability to ask questions about a large document or research paper. The feature, once available, will show on the left margin of ChatGPT's Web interface and desktop app. The feature is currently not available on the ChatGPT app on Android and iOS. Titled Projects, users can tap on the '+' icon next to the header to create a new folder. These folders are customisable and users can add preferred titles, emojis, and even change the folder colour. Once done, users can either add custom instructions or upload files to ground the chatbot's responses. The interface also shows the previous chats of the user for easy access. Additionally, users can also access the ChatGPT Search and Canvas feature within Projects. Once a folder is created, it will show up under the Projects header on the left margin.

Depending on your needs, it could be a better way to work on a project than my usual method, which is dumping everything I can think of into an Apple Note. Projects are the virtual file drawer full of neatly labeled folders put together by an assistant who has read each word on those papers. When you start a Project, you need to name it and assign it a color to make it easier to find. Then, you can group related chats and upload any relevant files. You can also set specific instructions for ChatGPT to follow while working within that particular Project space. This means if you're collaborating on a screenplay or building a website, you don't have to keep reminding ChatGPT about the details every time you start a new chat. You can add existing chats to a Project, start new ones, and even pull in data from your files mid-conversation. Plus, features like SearchGPT and Canvas all play nicely within the Project space. If Projects feels familiar, that's because it's a feature that some of ChatGPT's rivals already offer, most notably Claude, Anthropic's AI chatbot. So, OpenAI is catching up in some ways, offering a solution to a common frustration. Until now, keeping track of conversations with ChatGPT often meant dealing with a cluttered sidebar and a lot of scrolling. While OpenAI has made strides with features like memory and customization, the ability to group chats and files into coherent, themed bundles is arguably as significant as switching from Post-It notes to binders. Projects are also useful for building websites. You can upload design files and content ideas and specify your preferred coding languages. ChatGPT can then help you generate code for the site and improve any design or content. Unlike the usual ChatGPT coding help, the AI will remember what you've already worked on together because it happens within the same Project space. Weil and his team demonstrated Projects with various ways the tool might be employed. Since Santa was absent, he showed how to use Projects to organize a Secret Santa exchange instead. Instead of shuffling between spreadsheet tabs and copy-pasting the same info a million times, you create a Project with whatever rules and budget have been agreed upon, including a spreadsheet with everyone's wish lists. All your Secret Santa data lives there, and you can tell ChatGPT to manage it, even having the AI send out anonymous emails with gift assignments. Of course, there are a few potential issues. For one, the effectiveness of Projects depends on how clearly you communicate with ChatGPT. As the demo shows, being vague can lead to unintended results (like revealing Secret Santa secrets). Further, organizing through Projects won't make up for any sloppy prompts or not checking for errors in the output. You'll need a ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Teams subscription to use Projects for now, though those on the free tier will get access soon. Still, they may need to make a note to remind them about it since they don't have Projects available yet.

On the seventh day of OpenAI's 12 Days extravaganza, ChatGPT is finally adopting a project from Claude that has been sorely missing -- projects. This will allow users to group chats and data, making it easier to tailor ChatGPT to your needs. Every weekday until December 20 the AI lab is making at least one product, service or feature announcement. It is safe to say it has been a mixed bag so far. We've had Sora, ChatGPT Canvas, o1, Advanced Voice and several "stocking stuffers." OpenAI Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil led the Projects announcement live along with Drew Schuster, and Thomas Dimson who joined OpenAI when the AI lab acquired Global Illuminations. Projects is a feature I've been waiting for in ChatGPT. It is one of the main things that keeps pulling me back to Claude. I can, for example, share a dozen notes and files on a novel I'm writing and every new chat within the project can access that data. I don't need to keep sharing documents each time I start a session. ChatGPT Projects lets you group anything available within ChatGPT together including your custom data, conversations, GPTs and simple chats. Every chat within that project can access any information within the project, or you can just use the project like a folder to group together similar chats. You can use any ChatGPT feature including SearchGPT, Canvas and coding. During the demo, OpenAI showed the ability to start a chat from within the project, as well as adding files and even tagging in existing chats. One example use case of a project is to organize a Secret Santa. This allowed for the upload of rules, budget and a spreadsheet with a list of who gets what. Within this you can also give ChatGPT specific instructions just for that project, overriding the main instructions you might have given to ChatGPT generally. Within an individual chat you can ask the AI to pull in data stored within the chat and even have it adapt the data or create new tables based on the data. One word of warning from the demo -- be specific. If you ask ChatGPT to write an email based on data it could include 'secret' details of who wants what for Christmas. Another example shown during the 12 Days live stream involved coding a personal website. You can give it custom instructions on the technology you want to use as well as content you want included -- and ChatGPT can build the website. You'll still need to find a way to host it yourself though.
