Cyberpunk 2077 update adds early DLSS 4 support
Ian Walker loves exploring niche communities and researching the development of classic video games. Cyberpunk 2077's latest update is mostly about fixing lingering bugs, but hidden deep in the patch notes is something pretty exciting. Ahead of the release of Nvidia's new line of GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs on Jan. 30, folks playing Cyberpunk 2077 on soon-to-be-outdated PCs are now able to mess around with a few new DLSS 4 (or "deep learning super sampling") features. These include an enhanced single-frame generation model that both increases performance and lowers VRAM usage, as well as a new Transformer model for improved stability, lighting, and detail in motion As reported by The Verge, users of the Nvidia subreddit are already playing with this technology and sharing comparison screenshots. Cyberpunk 2077 players who upgrade to an RTX 50 series GPU later this month will also gain access to something called Multi Frame Generation which, according to the patch notes, "boosts FPS by using AI to generate up to three times per traditionally rendered frame." Sounds neat!

Cyberpunk 2077 2.21 patch adds DLSS 4 support days before RTX 50 series debut
Cyberpunk 2077 devs get the game ready for DLSS 4 when the technology drops with the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 on January 30th. Cyberpunk 2077 has officially received its DLSS 4 patch, featuring DLSS upgrades Nvidia advertised at CES 2025 and a plethora of bug fixes for PCs and consoles. Patch 2.21 formally supports DLSS 4's all-new Multi-Frame Generation technology and the new DLSS 4 transformer model. Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the first (if not the first) titles to get the DLSS 4 update. We first saw the game running on DLSS 4 at CES 2025, inevitably in a demo format. But now the game officially supports Nvidia's new DLSS iteration just before the update goes live, with the RTX 50 series initial release on January 30th. DLSS 4 support adds Multi-Frame Generation support and the new DLSS transformer model to Cyberpunk 2077's performance-enhancing options for RTX GPUs. Multi-frame generation allows RTX 50 series GPUs to render three or four AI-generated frames in addition to the real frame rendered on screen, tripling or quadrupling frame rates compared to native rendering. Gamers can toggle to render two, three, or four frames with their GPU in the in-game menu. As the name suggests, the new DLSS transformer model incorporates an all-new transformer AI model replacing DLSS' older Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The new model operates on twice as many parameters as its predecessor and requires four times more computing capabilities to run properly, making it significantly more demanding. Cyberpunk 2077 allows users to switch between the older CNN or newer transformer architecture on RTX GPUs that support DLSS 4. With DLSS 4's transformer model comes a massive improvement in image quality in areas where the older CNN DLSS implementation struggled. MxBenchmarkPC showcased a side-by-side comparison of DLSS 3.8 and DLSS 4, revealing a massive improvement in animated texture quality and less noticeable ghosting. However, the extra computation requirements of DLSS 4 can also be seen, with the RTX 4080 operating at a 2 FPS deficit with DLSS 4 compared to DLSS 3.8. This degradation in performance is barely noticeable on an RTX 4080. However, it could be amplified on slower cards, particularly previous-generation RTX-series GPUs with less powerful tensor cores. In addition to DLSS 4, the Cyberpunk 2077 dev team also dumped a plethora of bug fixes into this latest update for the game. Photo mode has received a boatload of fixes, including appearance issues with Adam Smasher and Johnny Silverstone.

Cyberpunk 2077 is the first game with official DLSS 4 support for new RTX 50 series GPUs
CD PROJEKT RED has pushed out its new Cyberpunk 2077 update, adding NVIDIA's new DLSS 4 upscaling technology support with its Transformer model, with significant image quality improvements over DLSS 3.8. Cyberpunk 2077's new 2.21 patch introduces a bunch of new things into the game, including a new Photo Mode, vehicle color customization fixes, randomizer settings in Character Creation, and much more. The big deal here is NVIDIA DLSS 4 support, with support also for the RTX 50 series GPU exclusive Multi Frame Generation technology. Once you've updated your game, you'll be able to choose between the old CNN model or the new Transformer model for DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, and Ray Reconstruction on all RTX series GPUs. In the video embedded above, MxBenchmarkPC has put together an awesome video comparing the new NVIDIA DLSS 4 Transformer model with Native, DLSS 3.8, and the new DLSS 4 upscaling tech. In his awesome review of NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition graphics card, our oown Kosta Andreadis said: "The transition has begun, but the GeForce RTX 5090 solidifies a shift to Neural Rendering for performance and image fidelity. The raw performance capabilities of a gaming GPU will always be vital because you can't have one without the other - but after spending an entire week with the GeForce RTX 5090, it's safe to say that DLSS 4 is not only a selling point but a set of AI models and features that improve PC gaming as a whole". He continued: "When looking closely at gaming workloads across native rendering, DLSS Super Resolution, ray tracing, and even Path Tracing with Frame Generation that pushes the RTX 5090 - the results are impressive and, more importantly, jaw-dropping. Looking at every conceivable metric, from raw performance to AI-generated frames, it's the most powerful GPU on the planet right now - and in Founders Edition form, it looks like something from the future".

Cyberpunk 2077's latest patch adds DLSS 4 support ahead of next week's RTX 50 Series arrival
Well here we are again, with yet another Cypberpunk 2077 patch, despite CD Projekt having officially wrapped up development on th game last year. And the headline feature this time around is DLSS 4 support, adding in anticipation of Nvidia's upcoming RTX 50 Series of GPU. As detailed in CD Projekt's update 2.21 patch notes, Cyberpunk 2077 now supports "DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation for GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics cards, which boosts FPS by using AI to generate up to three times per traditionally rendered frame". This, the studio notes, will be enabled alongside the release of the RTX 50 Series next Thursday, 30th January. Additionally, DLSS 4's arrival brings "faster single Frame Generation with reduced memory usage" that's available for users with either RTX 50 and 40 Series GPUs. Furthermore, players "can now choose between the CNN model or the new Transformer model for DLSS Ray Reconstruction, DLSS Super Resolution, and DLAA on all GeForce RTX graphics cards today. The new Transformer model enhances stability, lighting, and detail in motion." There's more going on in today's update than that, however. Version 2.21 also features an extensive range of fixes for Cyberpunk 2077's photo mode, and addresses various issues across the likes of vehicle colour customisation and character creation. Xbox and PlayStation users also get a number of platform-specific fixes, as detailed in CD Projekt's patch notes. Today's release follows December's surprise 2.2 update, which introduced the likes of expanded customisation options and new photo mode features - hence the focus on those particular modes in today's patch. CD Projekt's continuing support of Cyberpunk 2077 is perhaps a little surprising given the studio officially ended its development last May - although a Mac version has since been announced for release this year.
