Dynabook's New Windows Laptop Has a Replaceable Battery and Copilot+
I've Abandoned Third-Party Antivirus and I'm Never Looking Back If you're a Windows user who wants it all, the new Dynabook Portégé Z40L-N laptop might be what you're looking for. It's thin yet incredibly light while packing a durable alloy frame and a user-replaceable battery. Here's what you need to know about this new Copilot+ laptop. Dynabook, known for its rugged yet lightweight machines, announced its latest and greatest Z40L-N laptop. The Portégé line often delivers some of the thinnest or lightest laptops around, and this one is no exception. The all-new Portégé Z40L-N is a 14-inch Windows Copilot+PC with powerful Intel Ultra (series 2) processors, weighing under 1kg or 2.2 lbs. There aren't many larger laptops under 2.2 lbs, especially ones as durable as this. Another example is the LG Gram lineup, which consistently has some of the lightest models on the market. While durable and lightweight laptops are great, what makes this one impressive is Dynabook takes things a step further and adds a user-replaceable battery. As our devices continue to shrink in size and thickness, features like replaceable batteries, ports, and upgradable RAM all continue to disappear. With the Dynabook Portégé Z40L-N, you're getting an uber-lightweight machine that is still durable enough to earn a MIL-SPEC certification. That's likely due to the magnesium alloy chassis. Dynabook says it's resilient to drops, shock, and extreme conditions, which is why it meets MIL-STD-810H durability standards. Obviously, not everyone wants the thinnest laptop in the world, as that often comes with trade-offs. Even with its relatively thin form factor and lightweight design, Dynabook decided to keep all the essentials. This model retains all your favorite full-size connectivity options, including USB-C/Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, USB-A, and more. No adapters or dongles are required. Copilot Smarts and a Replaceable Battery In case you're wondering, another aspect of this machine is the , which combine with the design to make it one of Dynabook's best options yet. The Copilot+ PC is a new category of Windows computers, spanning laptops, desktops, and tablets. This laptop is yet another Copilot+ PC, which are intended to provide great performance and battery life with the ability to run local AI and machine learning models. Related What Is a Copilot+ PC? The magic of the TPU. Posts 15 Every Copilot+ PC includes a dedicated neural processing unit, or NPU, to run local machine learning (ML) or help with all the AI smarts that are being added to devices these days. The Dynabook Z40L-N integrates the latest Intel Core Ultra processors (Series 2) with four times more powerful NPUs for all that AI acceleration. It's also equipped with Wi-Fi 7 and Intel Arc Graphics. As you can imagine, being a Copilot+PC laptop, you'll enjoy all sorts of AI smarts. The company detailed a few in its announcement, designed to help business professionals get work done. Some of those include Live Captions, to automatically transcribe audio or text on the screen. Fancy gesture controls for touch-free navigation, which is helpful during slideshows and presentations, enterprise-grade security with chip-to-cloud protection, and more. Then, as part of every Copilot+ PC, you'll gain access to Windows Studio Effects using AI, enhancing video calls, improving lighting, and taking advantage of eye contact correction -- which helps deliver a professional on-screen presence during meets or conference calls. Fun fact: Dynabook is an independently operated company, majority-owned by Sharp, which bought up Toshiba's laptop business a few years ago and started selling machines under the Dynabook name. Unfortunately, Dynabook didn't share all the nitty-gritty details of its latest Portégé laptop. We don't know exactly which CPU options are available, the RAM and storage configurations, but it will start at $1,699. Backed by Dynabook's 3-year warranty, the all-new rugged, durable, and capable Portégé Z40L-N will be available starting later today from Dynabook's authorized partners. Source: Dynabook

Dynabook wants you to replace the battery in its new CoPilot+ laptop -- eventually
It's possible -- and even relatively simple -- to replace a laptop battery, but it's not exactly an enjoyable task. And many laptop companies would likely prefer you purchase a new laptop instead of just replacing the battery when your old one begins to fade. Even if you do opt to replace your battery, the service could cost upward of $500. Enter Dynabook, which unveiled its Portege Z40-N CoPilot+ PC on Friday. The laptop has a user-replaceable battery inside its metal chassis. (While many laptops have user-replaceable batteries, Dynabook is emphasizing ease of replacement.) The other thing to consider is that as a Copilot+ powered by an Intel Series 2 (nicknamed "Arrow Lake") chip, the battery life on this laptop is going to be great anyway, reducing overall battery consumption. That means you may not need to replace it for a long time. Now, is a replaceable battery kind of a less-relevant feature these days? Maybe. Here's some background on how Arrow Lake chips affect battery life. Easily replaceable laptop batteries fell out of fashion in the mid-2010s when laptop makers focused more on form factor. Thinner laptops mean more hardware is crammed into whatever small space is available, making quick access to the laptop less of a concern. It also helps that laptop prices have dropped over the years, making it easier to replace a laptop with a bad battery rather than paying hundreds of dollars for a replacement. Dynabook didn't provide details on how the battery is replaced. There are images showing that it appears that the battery cover slides out or needed a minimal amount of effort to remove from the chassis. To keep the 56Wh battery healthy, Dynabook also incorporated AI to help manage the laptop's power. The AI-enhanced power management system adjusts how much battery is consumed based on the programs being used. While there might be a demand for replacement laptop batteries, the Portégé Z40L-N is intended for business use. According to Dynabook, being able to switch out batteries would lower a company's IT costs and downtime. If having a laptop with an easy-to-replace battery is of interest to people, the Portégé Z40L-N starts at $1,699. The laptop is lightweight, coming in at just under 1kg, depending on the configuration. Despite its lightweight, the laptop's magnesium alloy chassis adds to its durability. It meets the MIL-STD-810H standards, which means it can be exposed to high and low temperatures, high humidity, dust, sand, shock and even drops without breaking. Powering the laptop is the latest Intel Core Ultra 5 processor or the upgraded Ultra 7 processor. It also has a Neural Processing Unit for its AI features that come with Copilot+PC laptops such as Live Caption, Gesture Control, and Windows Studio Effects. It also uses the AI feature, Human Presence Detection, to lock up the laptop whenever the user steps away, and it will alert them if anyone tries to get a close look at the laptop while the user was away. The starting configuration for the Portégé Z40L-N has a 14" WUXGA (1920x1200) display, 16 GB LPDDR5 RAM, an Intel Arc 130V GPU, WiFi 7, an HDMI port, two USB-C ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, and an Ethernet port. It's currently available at the Dynabook website.

Dynabook's newest laptop has a 4-year warranty, a swappable battery, a weight of under 1 kg, and even a LAN port
There's also Intel Arc Graphics for smooth performance in data visualization, video editing software, and video conferencing software. The business notebook features a 14-inch 16:10 display and weighs under 1 kg, similar to the Dynabook X8/Y and X6/Y released in 2024. The Z40L-N, however, is housed in a MIL-STD-810H-compliant magnesium alloy chassis, a design typically reserved for rugged laptops to provide protection against drops, shocks, and harsh environmental conditions. Dynabook has also fitted this lightweight AI notebook with a user-replaceable battery. Additionally, the device supports an AI-driven power management system, including Adaptive Dimming, which optimizes energy consumption based on workload demands to extend battery life. Designed for professionals who require both mobility and performance, the laptop incorporates AI-driven enhancements such as Windows Studio Effects, which refines video calls with background blur, lighting adjustments, and eye contact correction. It also includes AI-assisted gesture control for touch-free navigation, allowing users to switch slides and control media with simple hand movements, enhancing presentations and workflow efficiency. Live Captions provides real-time audio transcription, improving accessibility and workflow efficiency, while security features include Human Presence Detection, which locks the screen when the user steps away, and Peek Alert, which warns of unauthorized onlookers. As a Microsoft Secured-core PC, the Z40L-N prioritizes security with chip-to-cloud protection and integrates Windows Hello biometric authentication, enabling quick and secure login through facial recognition or fingerprint scanning. "Businesses today demand smarter, more efficient computing solutions that keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital workplace," said James Robbins, General Manager, Dynabook Americas, Inc. "The Portégé Z40L-N represents a new era of AI-powered business laptops -- one that not only enhances productivity but also redefines how professionals interact with technology." Despite its compact form, the Z40L-N offers a full range of connectivity options, including USB-C/Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, USB-A, and a LAN port, while Wi-Fi 7 support ensures faster, more stable wireless connections.
