Google is once again crossing the great divide between rival tech giants, at least with artificial intelligence. The company has launched a dedicated iPad app for its Gemini AI assistant. In addition to natively running on Apple hardware, Gemini's iPad app can take advantage of the tablet's split view, so that the AI assistant is open on the screen at the same time as another program for easier use. The app is available today from the App Store in all countries where Gemini is currently available. Gemini has been a huge focus for Google's recent announcements as it works to put its service in front of more and more potential users. got their first native Gemini app last November. The iPad often gets neglected by app developers, since it has the ability to run iOS apps by simply 2x-ing their size so that they roughly fit the iPad's larger screen; however this results in blocky text. Dedicated iPad apps are designed specifically for the iPad's larger screen size, and maintain the correct proportions and resolution for text and graphics. I've tried the new iPad version of the Gemini app, and it's is much nicer than 2x-ing the iOS app. There are no new features to be had, but you do get everything you got in the iOS version, which means you get to Go Live with Gemini for natural voice conversations, you can create AI images, and also video using Veo 2, provided you're a Gemini Advanced subscriber. And of course you can create Audio Overviews inside Gemini. The new iPad version of the Gemini app still lacks one of the best features of the app when used on a Pixel phone: the ability to share your screen and camera in conversations with Gemini. So far this remarkable feature has remained exclusive to Gemini used on Google Pixel phones, but it really unlocks the potential for using AI on a mobile device. It means that Gemini can 'see' what you're looking at through your camera and answer questions about it. The new camera and screen sharing capability is available free with all Pixel 9 phones, and it is available with the Gemini Advanced subscription for other Pixel phones. There's currently no news from Google about when this ability will appear on other Android phones, or even on iPad and iPhone using the Gemini app.

It offers similar functionality to its iOS counterpart, helping users get step-by-step instructions for problem solving, answering queries, generating texts, and summarising PDFs. Introduced as an AI assistant, Google says it can help "supercharge your creativity and productivity", powered by the Gemini family of large language models (LLMs), including Gemini 1.5. It brings Gemini Live, a two-way voice chat feature for its AI chatbot that lets both the user and the AI converse via speech. It offers 10 different voice options for personalisation, with each having a slightly varied accent, pitch, and tonality. As per the company, Gemini Live can be leveraged for chatting, brainstorming ideas, or finding answers to queries. Gadgets 360 staff members were able to verify the Gemini app for iPad's availability on the App Store. To expand upon its basic functionality, users can connect the Gemini app to other Google apps like Search, YouTube, Google Maps, and Gmail. Once done, it can play tracks, create playlists, start navigation, summarise an email thread, and suggest responses. By connecting Gemini to Search, it can provide more relevant and insightful responses based on your search history. Another notable feature of the Gemini for iPad app is its ability to generate images, leveraging Google's Imagen 3 generative AI model. Gemini is available free of cost on the iPad. However, users can also subscribe to Gemini Advanced for access to advanced capabilities, courtesy of the Gemini 1.5 Pro model. It also provides priority access to new features, a larger context window, and Gemini in Docs, Gmail, Sheets, and other Google apps. It is offered with the Google One AI Premium plan which costs Rs. 1,950 per month in India.

Gemini's well-integrated with other Google apps and services is why I use it even on my iOS devices. However, iPad users didn't get the proper experience of the chatbot since it didn't stretch across the entire screen real estate and only showed an iPhone-sized window. Now, Google is pushing out an update for Gemini, giving it a full-screen treatment on the iPad. The updated Gemini app now makes use of the entire screen on your iPad. On top of that, there's a new Gemini widget here as well. This lets you quickly perform actions like asking about an image, attaching files, or jumping into Gemini Live. Moreover, the AI can now also connect with your Google Photos library on the device, allowing you to ask questions about your images. I tried it out on our iPad, and it still feels like a stretched-out version of the iPhone app. When you tap on your previous conversation, it slides up to a different page altogether, same as on iPhone. Given the big enough screen space, I would have liked the Chats panel to slide out from the left like the desktop version. The new Gemini is rolling out for all iPad users, so if you haven't received it already, then try updating the app to the latest version. I like the fact that Google is not gatekeeping their AI and making an effort to cater to different price categories on Apple devices. However, there is still more work to be done here, and I hope a more optimized UI comes soon.
