Google's AI Overviews have 2B monthly users, AI Mode 100M in the US and India
Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared an update on the adoption of consumer-facing AI apps and features, including Google Search's AI Overviews, Gemini, and AI Mode. On the company's Q2 2025 call with investors, Pichai shared that AI Overviews -- a Google Search feature offering an AI summary of search results available in 200 countries and territories -- now has 2 billion monthly users, up from 1.5 billion in May 2025. In addition, Google's Gemini app has grown to 450 million monthly active users. "We continue to see strong growth and engagement with daily requests growing over 50% from Q1," Pichai said of the app. Meanwhile, AI Mode -- a way to use Google Search via an AI chat experience to get more in-depth answers -- has 100 million monthly active users. The service is available in the U.S. and, more recently, India, but is still rolling out. On the developer front, Google said more than 9 million have built with Gemini and over 70 million videos have been produced with the Veo 3 AI model since May. Google Vids, a Veo-powered feature for text-to-video AI generation in Google Workspace, now has nearly 1 million monthly active users. In Google Meet, over 50 million people used AI-powered meeting notes in Google Meet, the company also said. The stats are meant to illustrate consumer demand for AI features, though it's arguably difficult to determine how many people have truly and willingly turned to AI in Search, when the feature has been thrust upon them as aggressively as it has been. Across Google's platform and products, Google quantified its growth by monthly tokens processed, saying that it had announced at its developer conference in May that it had processed 480 trillion monthly tokens, and that figure has now doubled to 980 trillion monthly tokens. "We are seeing significant demand for our comprehensive AI product portfolio," Pichai told investors. "Of course, this is all possible because of the long-term investments we have made in our differentiated, full-stack approach to AI." Investors, however, reacted negatively to Google's plans to increase its capital expenditure spending to keep up with the AI race, which sent the stock slipping shortly after earnings were announced.

Google AI Mode has 100M monthly users as 2.5 Pro, Deep Search rolls out
During the Q2 2025 earnings call, Sundar Pichai shared some updates on Google AI Mode's progress, with the latest features (Gemini 2.5 Pro and Deep Search) announced last week now widely rolling out. The Google CEO said AI Mode "already has over 100 million monthly active users in the U.S. and India." The "end-to-end AI Search experience" entered testing in March and saw a US launch at the end of May, with India following earlier this month. Following last week's announcement, Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US are now seeing the ability to switch from the "Default" model to Gemini 2.5 Pro. On desktop and mobile web, you'll find a dropdown menu in the top-left corner. This is also where you can access the "Deep Search" chip. In the Android and iOS apps, the latter is not currently available, while you cannot switch models when you first enter a query in the prompt bar. The picker only appears after the initial response. That will hopefully be updated in the future, but until then you can visit google.com/aimode on a mobile browser. Mobile web vs. app One continued question from analysts on the earnings call is about Google having both the Gemini app -- which now has 450 million monthly active users, with "daily requests growing over 50% from Q1" -- and AI Mode. Broadly, there are some use cases where you can get a great experience in both places, but there are use cases which are very specific. -- Pichai AI Mode "shines" with "information-focused" queries, with the Gemini models "using Search deeply as a tool." Meanwhile, the Gemini app is more of an assistant that can help with tasks. With coding and making a video cited as examples. Pichai amusingly said: I think, between these two surfaces, you're pretty much... covering the breadth and depth of what humanity can possibly do, so I think there's plenty for two surfaces to tackle at this moment. Looking ahead:

Over 100 million users are actually using Google Search's AI mode
The AI-driven search feature is currently only available in the US and India. During a review of the latest quarterly report, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the search engine's new "AI mode" has now reached a new milestone, 9to5Google reports. Google's new AI mode was launched in late May earlier this year after a period of beta testing, replacing the old "I'm Lucky" button. It has now crossed over 100 million monthly active users, Pichai said. The new AI mode is so far only available in the US and India, but even so, given how large and ubiquitous Google Search is, that 100 million count doesn't feel like very much. With all the hype and hubbub over AI and with how strongly Google has been pushing AI, you'd think more users than that would be all over AI mode -- if they were interested. Google has not yet revealed when Search's AI mode will be launched in other countries and regions. Meanwhile, Google has been testing AI audio clips for search queries and even using AI to let you "try on" clothing before you buy.

Google's AI Mode in Search Hits Major Milestone, New Features Coming
Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed on Wednesday that AI Mode in Search now has more than 100 million monthly active users across the US and India. The information was shared during the company's second quarterly earnings call with investors. The Mountain View-based tech giant also highlighted that the other artificial intelligence (AI) feature in Search, AI Overviews, now has more than two billion monthly users and is available in 40 languages across 200 countries and territories. Separately, a report also claimed that the company has started rolling out Gemini 2.5 Pro and Deep Search in AI Mode to users. In a blog post, Pichai said that the company's latest AI-powered search experience, AI Mode, has received positive feedback from users. The Google CEO claimed that the feature was mainly being used for longer and more complex search queries. Additionally, he highlighted that despite being available in only two countries (India and the US), AI Mode has already registered 100 million monthly active users. Notably, the feature was first rolled out in the US in May, and was expanded to India in early July. This means any Indian user who tested out the feature would contribute to the 100 million MAUs. Pichai also said that Google intends to improve AI Mode by adding new features quickly. The tech giant has already announced the model picker feature and Deep Search. According to a 9to5Google report, both of these have started rolling out to users widely. However, Gadgets 360 staff members have not seen these features appear so far. First among the new features is the addition of the Gemini 2.5 Pro AI model, which users can select by tapping the dropdown menu next to the "AI Mode" text in the interface. The new AI model support will allow users to ask questions about mathematics, reasoning, and coding directly in Search. The second feature is Deep Search, which is build on Gemini's Dep Research. The new mode will let users ask queries that might be too complex or niche for even AI Mode. Deep Search can then run a wider search to find relevant information. According to the report, Pichai was asked about the reason for having both Gemini and AI Mode as separate products, when they essentially perform the same function. The Google CEO reportedly said that while there is a significant overlap, there are use cases which are unique to each product. Pichai reportedly explained that AI Mode is primarily meant for queries that are more information-focused, while Gemini caters to those users who require an assistant or a conversation. "And of course, there will be areas which will be commonly served by both applications, and over time, I think we can make the experience more seamless for our users," the CEO was quoted as saying.

While Google's AI growth is impressive, the company faces challenges in distinguishing between its various AI offerings. Pichai addressed the coexistence of the Gemini app and AI Mode, stating that they serve different use cases 2. However, the relatively low adoption of AI Mode (100 million users) compared to Google's massive user base suggests that there may be room for improvement in user engagement or feature differentiation 3.
As Google continues to invest heavily in AI development, investors have shown concern over increased capital expenditure, leading to a slight dip in stock prices following the earnings announcement 15. Nevertheless, Pichai remains optimistic about the future, expressing excitement for the progress towards artificial general intelligence (AGI) and its potential benefits for society 4.
