Audio Overviews, the AI tool that turns your research into podcast-like conversations in Google's NotebookLM app, is expanding beyond English. Now you can generate and listen to Audio Overviews in more than 50 languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, Hindi, Turkish, Korean, and Chinese. You switch to a different language by heading to NotebookLM, selecting your settings in the top-right corner of the screen, and choosing Output Language. From there, you can select from a list of languages, allowing you to receive responses and hear Audio Overviews in the language of your choice. Google says this is only "an early look at what's possible with this feature," adding that it plans to continue "building and refining it" based on feedback. Since launching Audio Overviews last year, Google has expanded it to more than 200 countries and added a range of new features, giving you the ability to "guide" the AI hosts of the conversation and even interact with them. Google has also brought Audio Overviews to its Gemini AI chatbot and Google Docs, allowing you to convert even more kinds of written material into AI podcasts.

I was given early access to the feature and was impressed with its accuracy and ease of use. First, I went to settings and changed the output language to español (latinoamerica). Then I uploaded a PDF of the Google I/O 2025 preview article I wrote and clicked on "Audio Overview." Although it took longer to generate the AI podcast than when I created it in English, it was still under five minutes. As a native Spanish speaker, I was pleasantly surprised by how natural the conversation sounded and how well it stuck to the news. I can confirm that it was all accurate in the facts and the conversational ad-libs around it. I found this feature to be the most fascinating addition to NotebookLM because, as someone who has written articles in Spanish before, even as a native Spanish speaker, it can be challenging. News uses language you don't necessarily use in colloquial speech, making it hard to translate, especially because English-to-Spanish literal translations typically don't mean the same thing. NotebookLM managed to keep it conversational, organize the content in a digestible way, and add side comments, while staying true to the original text. The feature is only in beta, and Google is keen to caution that there are still some problems. The voices might stumble, and you might encounter weird or wrong translations, especially in less frequently used languages. But the synthetic personalities will still discuss your research paper sources or complete home makeover guide and riff, recap, and remark on the content; it's just that English won't be the only tongue they do it in. That tone matters. One of the reasons Audio Overviews clicked with users in the first place is that they don't sound like a monotone robot trying to teach you tax law. Google adds Spanish and French to NotebookLM in huge language update

NotebookLM is one of Google's lesser-used AI products but it introduced a feature that's becoming increasingly popular -- Audio Overviews. The company already brought it over to Gemini and plans to add the feature to Google Docs in the next few months too. Until now, Audio Overviews has been an English-only tool but as of this week, it's available in over 50 languages. The NotebookLM platform is all about putting together notebooks of information and different sources and using LLMs to interact with them. Audio Overviews is basically a fancy summary tool -- it lets you generate audio summaries of your selected sources that are presented in the style of a podcast with two AI hosts. Recommended Videos Though you could always use source material in any language to generate an Overview, the audio content was previously only available in English. Now, you can easily switch to Spanish, French or any of the 50+ languages Google has added this week. This will make it really easy to consume just about any content without having to search out translations in your preferred language. You can listen to an Audio Overview of a brand-new Japanese research paper that hasn't been translated yet, or consume super-niche English content that hasn't been translated to Spanish. This also combines the feature's original benefit of summarizing and simplifying content so you can get the gist of something really long or complex in a much quicker and more accessible format. Since NotebookLM is marketed primarily as a study tool, it also occurs to me that this feature could be great for language learning. Consuming familiar content in your target language is a really accessible way to start boosting your comprehension skills. For reading, for instance, it's really common for people to pick up the "Harry Potter" books in their target language because everyone knows the story. For listening, you can take whatever kind of written information you're familiar with and convert it into a podcast in your target language to listen along to. A new "Output Language" option has also been added so you can easily switch between languages at any time and create multilingual content. Google's blog post about the update focuses on NotebookLM specifically, and it seems the additional languages aren't available for Gemini yet. This feature, launched last year, allows users to generate a podcast with AI virtual hosts based on documents shared with NotebookLM. The Audio Overviews feature is designed to help users digest and comprehend information in uploaded documents. With this expansion, users can now access Audio Overviews in their preferred language. Previously, Audio Overviews were generated in the user's account preferred language. Google has introduced a new "Output Language" option, allowing users to choose the language for their Audio Overviews. This change enables users to create multilingual content or study materials as needed. Users can change the language at any time. For example, a teacher preparing a lesson on the Amazon rainforest can share resources in various languages, such as a Portuguese documentary, a Spanish research paper, and English study reports, with their students. The students can then upload these resources and generate an Audio Overview of key insights in their preferred language.

A Gemini-powered chatbot can also answer user queries about the topic. While useful, the platform did not gain much popularity till September 2024, when the Mountain View-based tech giant added a unique feature dubbed Audio Overviews to it. The tool that could turn any document into an audio podcast instantly made the platform popular among users. So far, Audio Overviews could only generate audio sessions in the English language. However, in a blog post, Google has now announced that the AI feature will be available in more than 50 languages. Some of these languages include Afrikaans, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, Hindi, Malayalam, Portuguese, Russian, and Tamil. To change the output language, users need to go to Settings and locate Output Language. In the new menu, users can navigate to the top-right corner to update the language. Notably, by default, the Output Language is set to the user's Google Account language. Google highlights that non-English language support is currently available in beta, and as such, it is prone to making mistakes. Users should double-check the generated audio for any inaccuracies. Highlighting use cases of the new expansion, the tech giant said that it can help teachers share study resources with students in a variety of languages. I generated an AI podcast in another language in NotebookLM, and it did a wonderful job. By the way, NotebookLM uses Gemini's native multimodal capability to produce AI podcasts in different languages. Recently, Google added the ability to join the AI podcast and interact with AI hosts, which makes the experience even more immersive. Not to mention, you can now add relevant sources from the web to NotebookLM by describing what information you need.
