Google's Pixel 10 'Camera Coach' uses AI to help you take the best photos
With the arrival of the Pixel 10, the spotlight is on the cameras that Google's phones are known for. Compared to the Pixel 9's dramatic camera bump, however, this year's improvements are mainly iterative. The base model got the biggest hardware update with the addition of a third camera. Otherwise, Google focused mainly on AI processing this time, particularly with a new feature designed to help users improve their photos and Gemini AI addition that lets you edit photos using only your voice. For better or worse, a lot of Google's camera enhancements are on the AI side. A key new update is the Gemini AI-powered Camera Coach that aims to help users with photo composition. When enabled, it can read the scene and offer advice for the angle and lighting and even suggest the best mode (Portrait, Night Sight, etc.). Another new AI mode called Auto Best Take finds and combines similar photos into one so everyone in a group shot looks their best. And Google updated the "Add Me" feature from last year so you can include the photographer in even bigger groups. Google is also using AI to make it easier to edit Pixel 10 images The editor inside Google Photos now provides AI-powered suggestions that combine multiple effects for quick edits, even if you know nothing about photo touchups. Simply ask for a specific edit like "remove the cars in the background" or "restore this old photo." The AI will understand the change you're trying to make and use all the tools available to automatically do so. You can then add follow-up instructions for further improvements. Finally, all Pixel 10 models have an updated Portrait mode that offers "improved segmentation, detail, sharpness, and texture," so that photos shot in that mode look less, well, AI generated. The base Pixel devices have played second fiddle to the Pro models in the past. However, the Pixel 10 now has a triple-camera system just like the other models, thanks to the addition of a 10.8MP 5x telephoto lens. That boosts the maximum digital Super Res Zoom up to 20x, double that of the Pixel 9. It's worth noting that a 5x optical zoom is rare on a base model camera -- the Galaxy S25 has just a 3x lens, for instance. The other two are a 48MP wide (main) camera with macro focus, compared to a 50MP version before, along with a 13MP ultra-wide. Unfortunately, the latter is a downgrade in terms of resolution from the 48MP ultra-wide shooter on the previous model. Google is promising optical quality at 0.6x, 1x, 5x and 10x zoom levels. The 10.5MP ultra-wide selfie camera with a 95-degree field of view is the same mediocre one as before, though. Hardware-wise, the triple-camera systems on the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL models are unchanged in terms of resolution. Both have 50MP wide, 48MP ultra-wide with macro focus and 48MP 5x telephoto lenses, along with 42MP ultra-wide selfie cameras as before. One new feature on both models is the "Pro Res Zoom" optimized for the Tensor G5 chip that goes up to 100x, compared to 20x on the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL. Since that zoom is digitally enhanced, however, you may see some wonky artifacts. One other change is double the stabilization on the wide camera that's supposed to provide more cinematic footage, according to Google. Not much has changed on the video side, with 8K available on the Pro models only via the Video Boost feature that digitally upscales footage from 4K. Finally, the Pixel 10 Fold has a similar setup to the Pixel 10, with a 48MP wide camera, 10.5MP ultra-wide camera and 10.8MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom. The front and inner cameras are both 10MP f/2.2 models. Pixel 10 devices will also be the first to implement C2PA content credentials within the native camera app, whether they were created with or without AI. As a reminder, C2PA (Content Provenance and Authenticity) is a standard being used by Meta, Google and others to detect and label changes made by AI. Another key AI accessibility feature called Guided Frame describes what the camera is seeing for blind and low vision users. Finally, it's worth calling out the new Actua 360 display available on all models, particularly the 50 percent extra brightness (up to 3,000 nits peak). That makes photography easier on sunny days as you can better see details in your composition. In sum, it's good to see the Pixel 10 getting some love on the photo side with a triple camera system that matches or beats its competition. The Pixel 10 Pro models are mostly unchanged, however, removing some incentive to upgrade rom the Pixel 9 Pro -- though the new AI features look more promising than usual. In any case, you'll get the full picture of the Pixel 10 lineup's cameras with Engadget's upcoming reviews.

Pixel 10 camera adds 'Camera Coach', 100x 'Pro Res Zoom' 24fps video, plus more new features
The Pixel 10 series has officially been unveiled with a whole suite of new camera features and upgrades for existing functions. Here's what you need to know. Arguably, the most notable new camera feature is found on the standard Pixel 10 model. It's the first base model since the introduction of "Pro" versions to be equipped with a dedicated telephoto lens. This 10.8MP lens is identical to the telephoto found on the Pixel 9 Pro and 10 Pro Fold. It'll offer up to 20x Super Res Zoom, a feature previously exclusive to the Pro models. However, this addition comes with a trade-off. The main camera sensor has been downgraded from a 50MP sensor on the Pixel 9 to a 48MP sensor lifted directly from the Pixel 9a. On the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL, their zoom capabilities are being taken to the next level with a new feature called Pro Res Zoom. This new feature, which replaces Super Res Zoom on the Pro models, uses advanced AI to achieve up to 100x magnification. The triple-lens setup remains unchanged, so this relies heavily on AI to upscale and enhance photos. This upgrade is going to be ideal for capturing distant subjects, making it a perfect feature for playing around with various situations and settings. All Pixel 10 models benefit from powerful new AI features, thanks to the integration of enhanced Gemini models. Camera Coach, a preview feature, provides real-time, on-screen feedback to help you improve your framing and composition. It's like having a personal photography coach, offering suggestions on everything from angles and zoom levels to using specific modes like Portrait. The Guided Frame feature has also been enhanced to provide full image descriptions for all scenes, not just faces. This makes it an invaluable tool for users with visual impairments, who can now receive detailed audio and text cues to help them capture better photos in even the most complex environments. It's not clear if this might come to older models or is reliant on Tensor G5 to work efficiently. The popular Best Take feature, first seen on the Pixel 8, has been automated on the Pixel 10 series cameras. Now, when taking a group photo, the camera will instantly analyze up to 150 split-second snapshots to find the best facial expression for each person. The results are then seamlessly blended to create the perfect shot without any manual intervention, saving you the hassle of sifting through dozens of photos to get the right one. Another camera feature first for the Pixel 10 is built-in C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) support. This technology catalogs and documents any AI-based edits an image has undergone; some would argue that this is a crucial step toward maintaining transparency in an age of increasingly sophisticated AI-powered photo manipulation. All Pixel 10 series phones are the first smartphones to ship with this by default. While the folding phone will not be available alongside the other Pixel 10 devices, the 10 Pro Fold has a few new camera features that take advantage of the bigger internal display. Instant View displays a carousel of your recent photos directly next to the viewfinder. This allows for quick review and comparison of shots without leaving the camera app. Google has also claimed significant improvements to Portrait mode, with better segmentation that should result in more accurate separation of subjects from the background. This welcome software-based enhancement aims to deliver sharper, more professional-looking portraits. Video modes haven't had tons of attention this year, but for the first time, all Pixel 10 models can shoot video at a cinematic 24fps across all available resolutions. This feature, along with enhanced OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) at 2x zoom and higher (on Pro models), makes the Pixel 10 a more capable tool for aspiring filmmakers. The Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL are also capable of 8K video recording at 24fps with the help of Video Boost. While this still requires uploading and processing through Google Photos, the end results should be as good as ever.

Google just revamped these underrated features for Pixel 10 -- what you need to know
Google is updating some of its most underrated Google Pixel features to make sure you get the most out of all the new hardware it unveiled at the Made By Google event -- including the Google Pixel 10. The first change is aimed at making it much easier to get the most out of your new phone as soon as you have it out of the box. In the past, Google offered the Pixel Tips feature that included guides, hints and tips to make the most out of your phone. However, In a recent blog post (via Android Authority,) Google revealed that it was refreshing the Pixel Tips app with a new name, My Pixel, and a Material 3 Expressive design. In My Pixel, you'll be able to learn how to utilize all the features on your new phone, including showcase cards for both the Camera app and Google Gemini. As with the current version, if you tap on either of the cards, they'll take you to the relevant app while also explaining what each button does and how to use it. The My Pixel app also features a "Get Started" section, which is designed to cover the basics of using a Pixel phone. You can also use the app to learn how to get the most out of your Pixel phone, including extra tips for the Camera app and the Google Pixel's host of AI features. It is worth noting that the tabs for Pixel support and Google Store are currently only available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, and Taiwan for now. There are plans to increase the number of countries in time, and any location not on that list will still have access to the redesigned Pixel Tips app. It isn't just the My Pixel that's coming to phones, as users have also spotted a change that appears to mimic Samsung's Now Bar. In a recent post on X by user Kwekutuffour200, the homescreen's At a Glance shows off stock performance and, in another post, soccer scores. While we don't know what kind of information (or sports) will be covered, Android Authority spotted both soccer and cricket. There's no doubt that the Google Pixel 10 series is already on its way to landing a place on the best phones you can buy. These new features will also go a long way to improving the experience of using the phones, for both the newer devices and older ones. If you're interested in more information regarding Google's releases, you can check out our live blog from the Made by Google event, which includes all the releases as we saw them happen. The Biggest New AI Features Coming to Google's Pixel 10 Phones
The new Pixel 10 lineup, as you'd expect, is all about AI. But it's taking a more subtle approach. Gemini has become a staple for many Android smartphones, not just Pixel, so the focus is on what Pixel can do differently: Using its new AI-tailored chip to provide smaller, on-device AI features that no one else can. Here are all the important AI features that will be coming exclusively to Pixel 10 series smartphones (including the Pro and Fold) later this year. The bedrock of all these new changes is the new Tensor G5 chip. It's Google's biggest silicon upgrade to date. Google has shifted to using TSMC's latest 3 nm process, instead of Samsung's foundries, meaning it's fully custom. This has, according to Google, lead to approximately 34% faster performance overall, but more importantly, the on-device Tensor Processing Unit that handles AI tasks is 60% faster than before. This means that Google can run its lightweight Gemini Nano model in a more efficient and dynamic fashion, efficiently switching between sub-models depending on the use case. Now, almost all the new AI features coming to Pixel 10 series are processed on-device, which lets them work offline and gives them more reign to use your data without privacy concerns. Magic Cue is going to be everywhere on Pixel 10, but only when it's needed. It's Google's version of "contextual quiet computing", where it surfaces important information and actionable steps exactly when needed. When not, it just doesn't come up. For example, say your friend messages you to ask about dinner reservations. Magic Cue can understand this, pull up relevant information from your Gmail or Google Calendar, and bring it up as a suggested text right there. All you have to do is tap to send it. This can work for flight details as well, which will display on screen during phone calls with the airline. This is built into most of Google's core apps, like Gmail, Calendar, Screenshots, Messages, and more. In Pixel 10, you won't need to use buttons and sliders to edit images anymore. Google is integrating Gemini right inside the Photos image editor. It's coming first to the Pixel 10 in the U.S. With Gemini, you'll be able to use your voice or text to edit your images, and you'll get responses back in real-time. You can give commands like "remove the cars in the background" or "restore this old photo". If you don't know exactly what you want, you can also just say something like "make it better". Image editing using AI also raises some concerns about whether what you're seeing is real. To get around this, Google is adding C2PA Content Credentials in Google Photos, which lets users view a photo's metadata to check all the ways AI was used in its creation. There's a new AI mode built-in to the Pixel camera that isn't purely about editing or enhancing images. It's about helping you, the user, take better images from the get-go. Quick note: Google told Lifehacker that this one does send a photo to the cloud, but also said it gets deleted after you're done using the feature. Essentially, Camera Coach analyzes a photo and gives you prompts or suggestions on how to take a better shot. It will tell you to maybe try moving a couple of steps back, or try inverting your phone to make the subject look taller. It can also suggest you shift the angle if the lighting is too harsh, and use AI to ideate scenarios that weren't in your original shot. AI live translation is coming to Pixel's Phone app. Pixel 10 can translate calls in real time, via speech-to-speech, and even matches the translated AI voice to sound just like the speaker's voice. This means two people can carry on a conversation in their own native tongues. There's no in-depth training period required for the AI voice clone, either. As you speak, the voice will adapt to your cadence and nuances. Again, all of this happens on device, too, so it's fast. This works with English to and from Spanish, German, Japanese, French, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Russian, and Indonesian. A couple of smaller Gemini Live features are coming to Pixel phones on August 28th (along with other supported Android smartphones). The major new feature is Gemini's ability to highlight things on your screen. It makes a little box around what it wants you to focus on, and dims the rest of the screen. Gemini Live will also be able to interact with more apps, including Messages, Phone, and Clock. Google is adding AI features to your missed calls as well. The Take a Message feature will now provide real-time transcripts of incoming call, but it goes beyond that. You'll get a summary, and actionable steps based on the voicemail.

Seven New Camera Features Coming to the New Pixel 10 Phones
Google showed off a ton of new hardware at Made by Google 2025, from the new Pixel Watch 4 to the Pixel Buds 2a. But among the biggest announcements of the day were the new cameras on Google's upcoming Pixel 10 series. The new photography features coming to the Pixel 10 line are something of a mixed bag -- for some users the new cameras will be worse than the previous generation -- but there are plenty of new features here that might pique your interest, provided you like AI. All Pixel 10 phones now come with a 5x telephoto lens, and the base-model Pixel 10 can take advantage of digital 20x "Super Res Zoom," but the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL have something extra: Pro Res Zoom, a feature that extends the zoom range up to 100x (kind of). Going from the last generation's 30x times zoom to 100x is a big jump, but you may be thinking "everything looks terrible when zoomed in that much." Google has an answer: The new tech works by analyzing more than 200 images to get as accurate, unpixelated images of distant objects as possible. What can't be improved that way is filled in by generative AI. Google says Pro Res Zoom is tuned to minimize hallucinations and prevent inaccurate representations, which I'll believe when I see. Camera Coach, powered by Google's Gemini AI, analyses the shot you're framing in real-time and makes suggestions though visual prompts and instructions for improving composition, lighting, and more. Your phone will say things like: "Move closer," "put the subject in the middle of the frame," "don't forget the rule of thirds," and more. It can also offers AI-generated example pictures that you could get, then will walk you through what you need to make them happen. The end result is not just better photograph, but learning more about how good photographs are taken, which has potential. At least one person has their eyes closed in every group photo I have ever taken. Auto Best Take aims to solve this problem through, what else, AI! Turn this on, and artificial intelligence will start taking a bunch of photos of your friend group, and then analyze up to 150 frames in seconds to find one where everyone is looking fly. If it doesn't find a single image that worked out, it will blend different photos together to get one great group picture; provided you have the same idea of what a "great" picture means as the AI. How will Auto Best Take deal with photos where everyone looks miserable on purpose? It remains to be seen. If you want to make your photos better without learning how to edit, you can just tell Google Photos what you want changed. You can type something like "make me look skinnier" or "fix the lighting" and Gemini will do its level best to follow your wishes. You can also use it for bigger editing lifts, like "remove that guy on the left" or "make it look like we're standing on the moon." That said, Google's manual photo editing features will remain in place if you want to do things the old fashioned way. While not specifically a camera feature, Pixelsnap is camera-adjacent. Google's magnetic ecosystem for accessories will allow budding Wee Gees and Diane Arbuses to instantly snap on lights, stands, and other camera accessories on Pixel 10 phones. I'm pretty sour on most aspects of artificial intelligence, but when it's used to make things easier and better for people with disabilities, it's hard to be passionate about hating it. Guided Frame is aimed at helping people with visual impairments take better photos, through audio cues, high-contrast animations, and haptic feedback to help folks frame their shots. This feature, exclusively for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, allows users to view recently captured photos and videos alongside the viewfinder when the phone is unfolded. That way you can compare photos in real time to improve the next pic you snap. Lifehacker will have a much more detailed look at these camera features and more when associate tech editor Michelle Ehrhardt has a chance to put them through their paces, so stay tuned for more details down the road.
