Pixel Screenshots could soon take center stage on your home screen
Summary Google is reportedly developing a home screen widget for its Pixel 9-exclusive Pixel Screenshots app, which uses AI to organize and search through screenshots. The initial version of the widget displays the latest screenshot you've taken in a 2x2 grid with quick actions for sharing, editing, and setting reminders, but it is currently not customizable or resizable. While the widget is not yet live in the latest app build, it is expected to launch in a future update, potentially with more features and customization options. Google's Pixel 9-exclusive Pixel Screenshots app is a dedicated tool that turns all the screengrabs you hoard into valuable information. First announced back at 2024's Made by Google event, the app has since been integrated with more Google apps, including Gboard, Google Wallet, and even Circle to Search (CtS). That was back in early December, and now, roughly four months in, Google seems to be working on giving the Pixel Screenshots app a much-needed home screen shortcut. As of its current implementation, there's no way to customize the widget to show any other information. Additionally, the widget isn't resizable either. "See the latest screenshot and it's associated action," read the widget's description -- Yes, with the 'it's' typo in there. Tapping the widget allows you to access quick action, including sharing, editing, and an option to set a reminder related to the image. It also likely serves as a direct shortcut to the app. Still a ways off Source: Android Authority The latest February-released Pixel Screenshots build, version 0.24.433.24.release.724216128, does not unlock access to the widget. It could, however, launch widely with a future version of the app -- potentially with more connected features and an option to customize the widget size. Here's a suggestion to Google: make the widget swipeable, allowing users to sift through their recent (let's say 10) screenshots to find the desired one right on the home screen. Pixel Screenshots is picking up a feature you didn't know you wanted
Pixel devices have been recognized for their unique tools, such as Magic Eraser and Best Take. A recent addition, Pixel Screenshots, is set to gain a new feature that will enhance its utility. According to Android Authority, Pixel Screenshots will soon allow users to add widgets. In its current form, which is not yet available to the public, the primary function of this widget is to display your most recent screenshot directly on the home screen of your Pixel device. By tapping the widget, you will have the ability to share or edit the screenshot. Here's a look: Pixel Screenshots is an AI-powered feature exclusive to Google's Pixel smartphones, designed to help you save, organize, and recall information from your screenshots. What sets it apart is that it was launched alongside the Pixel 9 series and relies on Google's on-device AI (Gemini Nano) to automatically organize screenshots, analyze their content, and make them searchable for easy information retrieval. Recommended Videos With the March 2025 Pixel Drop, Pixel Screenshots received valuable updates, including the ability to automatically suggest adding uncategorized screenshots to relevant collections, streamlining the organization process. This feature also became available in work profiles for Pixel 9 users, allowing for a clearer distinction between personal and professional content. The on-device AI extracts important information such as text, dates, and key points, bundling these elements into collections that you can manually add to or filter. Interestingly, some functionalities of Pixel Screenshots were initially part of a more ambitious AI assistant project codenamed "Pixie," which was later divided between Pixel Screenshots and Gemini. This feature has numerous practical applications. You can pose questions like "What were the restaurant recommendations?" or "How many peaches are needed in Dad's recipe?" Pixel Screenshots will locate and display the relevant information from your saved screenshots. Pixel Screenshots are available in English, Japanese, and German on the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and upcoming Pixel 9a.
