MediaTek's Dimensity 8400 is going to make 2025 phones faster and more efficient
MediaTek has just introduced its latest smartphone silicon, and this one promises some big changes for mid-range smartphones. The latest offering from the Taiwanese company is the Dimensity 8400 chip, and it will take on Qualcomm's excellent Snapdragon 7 series Gen 3 processors. The new MediaTek chipset, however, enters the fray with more firepower than we have ever seen in this segment. That's because the Dimensity 8400 goes all-in on big cores and ditches efficiency cores, just like its flagship sibling, the Dimensity 9400. Recommended Videos Instead of the hybrid Arm Cortex-A715 + Arm Cortex-A510 design we got on the Dimensity 8300 series, the successor offers a cluster of eight next-gen Arm Cortex-A725 cores arranged in a 1+3+4 configuration. The prime core here, in particular, touches a peak frequency of an impressive 3.25 GHz. Moreover, the L3 cache has also gone by 50%, reaching the 6MB mark, which directly translates to quicker data fetching on the processing node, resulting in snappier performance. Please enable Javascript to view this content The L2 and SLC cache has also received up to 100% capacity boost. On the graphics front, there's a new GPU in town. The Dimensity 8400 embraces the Arm Mali-G720 MC7 GPU, which also unlocks 4K 60fps encoding. Coming to the performance gains, MediaTek is touting some impressive figures. The Dimensity 8400 is claimed to offer a 41% jump in raw multi-core tests while also drawing 44% less energy at peak performance compared to its predecessor. The new graphics engine, on the other hand, leapfrogs the Dimensity 8300 series by 24% while simultaneously being 40% more energy efficient. The cellular modem has received similar treatment, taking the peak 5G speeds all the way up to 5,71 Gbps. Another crucial upgrade on the Dimensity 8400 is the AI stack, thanks to an updated accelerator and the addition of MediaTek's Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE) for AI workflows. The latter has remained exclusive to the flagship tier, so far. The company is touting a 20% jump in AI operations and a similar boost in image generation, up to 33% improvement in AI text generation, and an 18% gain in efficiency numbers. The onboard ISP's camera capabilities are also impressive, which bodes for shoppers who seek reliable imaging output on a phone without paying top dollar for it. The Imagiq 1080 ISP offers perks such as HDR video recording across the entire zoom pipeline, 4K 60fps video capture, in-sensor zoom with 100% phase detection auto-focus (PDAF), and 320MP composite capture, among others. MediaTek says the first wave of phones equipped with its latest silicon will hit the shelves towards the end of the year. Separately, Xiaomi has confirmed in China that it will pack its next Redmi Turbo device with a slightly faster variant called Dimensity 8400 Ultra, set for arrival early next year.

MediaTek Dimensity 8400 Announced with All Performance-Only Cores
The chipset offers 44% more power efficient while offering 41% higher multicore performance and 24% better peak performance. MediaTek always pushes the boundaries of offering high-end performance at a reasonable price and seems like this will continue to be the case. The company just unveiled its Dimensity 8400 processor, which is the successor to the MediaTek Dimensity 8300 (benchmark comparison). This new processor seems like a promising upgrade, featuring only high-power cores in the cluster. The new MediaTek Dimensity 8400 that just debuted, comes with an octa-core cluster of solely ARM Cortex-A725 cores clocked at 3.25GHz. If you know your processors, then you would be surprised that there are no efficiency cores to speak of at this time. According to its product page, the Dimensity 8400 is built upon TSMC's 4nm architecture instead of 3nm that we hoped for. Still, it manages to push out 41% higher multicore performance and 24% better peak performance thanks to the Mali-G720 GPU. These are some amazing numbers of a generational upgrade. MediaTek seems to have gone all in towards performance this time. However, even housing only performance cores, the MediaTek Dimensity 8400 still manages to be 44% more power efficient. These are some flagship-level charms. This chip will also come with MediaTek NPU 880 which will support all the mainstream large language models. This will allow for improved processing of on-device AI models. It also features MediaTek's Dimensity Agentic AI Engine or DAE. This will allow developers to create AI applications that predict your needs and draw power accordingly. We saw this before on the high end, MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chip. For images, it includes the MediaTek Imagiq 1080 ISP. It utilizes remosaic technology to capture more light into the frame and speeds up focusing for more high-resolution results. The ISP also allows for HDR in video recording throughout all zoom ranges. So with the right hardware, the Dimensity 8400 will be able to push out some top-quality results. There's an advanced 5G modem sporting up to 3CC-CA, and offering peak download speeds of 5.17 Gbps. It utilizes Network Observation System (NOS) technology to quickly jump from 5G to Wi-Fi and vice versa. The midrange processor also supports WQHD+ resolutions and 144Hz refresh rate. So, it could also suit future foldable devices. All in all, the Dimensity 8400 seems like a force to reckon with in the mid-range segment of devices. It features all the best components of a flagship processor, and we know that it wouldn't cost as much as one. However, given that 2024 is just a few days away from coming to a close, we won't be seeing any devices getting it this year. But we will keep an eye out for all the new phones featuring this processor.
