This is perhaps not entirely unexpected, and though artificially intelligent (AI) chatbots do have a significant role to play as search tools for users, OpenAI isn't letting it be as is. The company has announced prototype version SearchGPT, an AI search engine that's designed to rival Google Search, and pretty much every other search engine that's available. This battle would be interesting to watch as it unfolds, because Google too has been giving its Search engine a serious AI upgrade, in recent months. As has Perplexity. In case you are wondering what the core difference is between SearchGPT and asking the ChatGPT chatbot the same query, the reasons are two-pronged - first, the information served in response to a query will be as time relevant as possible with a relevant link if you would like to read more, and secondly, there will be context for follow-up queries in the same search. From the demo that HT has seen, there is a significant visual element to search results, complete with mentioning the source of those results. HT has not been able to test SearchGPT yet. OpenAI doesn't say if there will be any integration with existing search engines, such as Microsoft Bing. "Getting answers on the web can take a lot of effort, often requiring multiple attempts to get relevant results. We believe that by enhancing the conversational capabilities of our models with real-time information from the web, finding what you're looking for can be faster and easier," says OpenAI, in a statement shared with HT. This has, they say, no link to any training data sets. This is separate from GPTBot, which crawls web pages for content to put into the data sets for training the company's AI models.

You get a large search box, wherein you can enter "what are you looking for". You will directly get an answer to your query instead of search results like in a traditional search engine. The answer will be detailed, step-by-step and even with related images. It uses AI (Natural Language Processing and the in-house GPT Large Language Models) to understand the context and intent behind your query and accordingly give you an answer. For this answer, it scans web results and summarises the relevant results. OpenAI assures it will provide links to the relevant sources next to every piece of information derived from the web. You can find more related results with source links in a sidebar. As already mentioned, the answer will be aided by related visual elements like images, video clips, etc. Since all of this interaction with the SearchGPT takes place in a chatbot-like interface, you can ask follow-up questions and converse with the bot regarding the topic/query. In future, it will be baked into ChatGPT which should make it easier to access. Speaking of access: SearchGPT is a prototype and therefore is currently walled behind a waitlist. With SearchGPT, though, you converse with the tool through questions. Instead of typing ChatGPT into the search box, you'd ask what you want to know about it. You might say, "Who made ChatGPT," or "How much is ChatGPT." OpenAI says, "Now, we're using AI to enhance this experience by highlighting high-quality content in a conversational interface with multiple opportunities for users to engage." You'll still find results from your favorite websites, but you'll look for them differently. Will it be better or worse than how we're accustomed to searching? Time will tell. Building on the conversational elements of SearchGPT are the follow-up questions. You'd follow up with additional questions based on their answers, and that's what OpenAI is attempting to recreate. Expect that you will get the whole internet instead of having one expert. This one is pretty self-explanatory. Google has cluttered search results with ads and in recent years. You have to scroll through multiple "Sponsored" results before you get to the high-ranking articles on the topic. As of now, SearchGPT doesn't have ads, so the results you get are actually the best ones, at least according to whatever system the company is using to surface results. Google Search is a lot heavier than it was in the old days. You no longer visit the site and get a simple search box on mobile. Now, you'll see extra stuff like the Google Discover feed. With SearchGPT, we're back to that glorious-looking search box (or, in this case, question box) designed to get you what you're looking for so you can move on with your day. Of course, the interface may not stay simple forever, especially once it is implemented with the whole ChatGPT experience (though the main chatbot's interface is still relatively clean). Perpahs the most underrated differnece between SearchGPT and Google Search is that OpenAI promises that it's working with publishers and reporters to keep journalism at the forefront of its efforts. Unlike traditonal ChatGPT, which just provides answers to questions, this will answer the question and cite the publication, linking back to them for users who want to learn more. "SearchGPT is designed to help users connect with publishers by prominently citing and linking to them in searches," explained OpenAI on its website. While OpenAI is saying everything right, it has a challenging mountain to climb. Google is synonymous with search; dethroning it will take a Herculean effort. 'How much SearchGPT ends up competing with the current leading consumer search engines will be partly dependent on the actual speed and accuracy of using SearchGPT," said Hayley Sutherland, Research Manager, Conversational AI & Intelligent Knowledge Discovery at IDC, "And these parameters will also help determine the use cases (types of searches/question answering) that SearchGPT will be best suited for." SearchGPT is promising, but we need to dig in and fully experience it for ourselves.
