Though concrete details were sparse, Altman predicted that ChatGPT's "next giant breakthrough" would be "agents" AI agents are tools that can perform tasks independently, interacting with the world without human intervention. For example, booking you a flight or a concert ticket, or answering an IT desk service query. Though he didn't say anything specific, OpenAI VP of Engineering Srinivas Narayanan also said that in the future he would love ChatGPT to "understand my personal information better and take actions on my behalf." OpenAI's leadership hasn't exactly been underpromising when it comes to the future of GPT-5. In May, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap said in a talk at the Milken Institute Global Conference that "we will look back in a year and realize how laughably bad" previous versions of ChatGPT. But though GPT-5 might not be here as quickly as some fans may have wanted or expected, the firm has given AI fans plenty of new tools to play with in the interim. Earlier this week OpenAI unveiled a search interface for ChatGPT, ChatGPT search, aimed at giving users information they "would have previously needed to go to a search engine for." However, the update was only available for paid Plus and Teams subscribers. Though the round of product updates shouldn't come as much of a surprise, Altman also gave some more unexpected hints at the AI tool's future direction. The session was hosted on the social networking platform Reddit and users were told to ask questions about the AI firm's products such as ChatGPT or general queries about artificial intelligence (AI) and artificial general intelligence (AGI). During the session, Altman said that GPT-5 will not be released this year, however, the company plans to introduce "some very good releases" before the end of 2024. The AMA session was hosted on the ChatGPT subreddit. Calling it "our Reddit launch", several executives including Altman, OpenAI CPO Kevin Weil, SVP of Research Mark Chen, VP Engineering Srinivas Narayanan, and Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki participated in the question-and-answer post. The official X (formerly known as Twitter) handle of OpenAI also posted about the Reddit AMA. Answering a question about the timeline for GPT-5 or its equivalent's release, Altman said, "We have some very good releases coming later this year! nothing that we are going to call gpt-5, though." This seems on par with what multiple reports have confirmed with most expecting OpenAI to release the next flagship model sometime in 2025. Explaining why hallucinations from AI models are not completely gone, he called it a fundamentally hard problem. This is because the AI models learn from human-written text, and humans can often make errors, which then are added to the core dataset of the large language models (LLMs). "Our models are improving at citing, which grounds their answers in trusted sources, and we also believe that RL will help with hallucinations as well - when we can programmatically check whether models hallucinate, we can reward it for not doing so," Chen added.

Agents are autonomous AI bots that can perform tasks for you. Perhaps the most interesting comment from Altman was about the future of AGI - artificial general intelligence. Seen by many as the 'real' AI, this is an artificial intelligence model that could rival or even exceed human intelligence.
