ChatGPT Team just got a powerful new feature that taps into your company's internal data
ChatGPT Team users who would like to use the AI with internal data will be able to do just that via a new beta program now kicking off. In a LinkedIn post on Thursday, OpenAI Product Leader Nate Gonzalez announced the rollout of a new capability -- the most requested feature from ChatGPT business customers. This feature will allow ChatGPT to connect to your internal knowledge sources. This means employees will be able to ask ChatGPT to answer questions, provide summaries, and generate content about files housed internally by your organization. Also: I tried ChatGPT's new image generator, and it shattered my expectations The first source is Google Drive, with support gradually being rolled out over the next few weeks. When the new access is available, ChatGPT admins within a company will receive a notification that it's ready for setup. From there, you'll be able to connect to your internal Google Drive storage, where the AI can scour your files to provide the information and help you need. In a demo video, OpenAI showed how the feature would work. In ChatGPT Team, a new option called Internal Knowledge appears below the prompt. Select that one to see any internal sources that have been set up -- in this case, Google Drive. At the prompt, you might then ask ChatGPT for information about an internal project for one of your company's products. After analyzing the related files, the AI responds with a description and bullet point items, also listing the source files it consulted. Also: How to use ChatGPT to write code - and my favorite trick to debug what it generates ChatGPT then asks if you need any further details or have additional questions. You might tell it that you're giving a product demo to a customer tomorrow and that you'd like a script you can use to discuss the key elements. The AI generates a script with an opening statement, a walkthrough of the demo, selling points of the product, and finally a closing statement. ChatGPT also asks if you'd like it to find slides or screenshots for the demo. Google Drive is just the first source to make the cut. Gonzalez said that OpenAI plans to roll out many more connectors. Though not revealing any specific names, he did list several categories. Plus, this capability will soon expand to ChatGPT Enterprise users. "And this is just the beginning," Gonzalez said. "The team is already working on the next wave of connectors, aiming to support all the key internal knowledge sources your team relies on today -- from collaboration and project management tools to data analytics platforms, CRMs, and more. These new connectors will be available soon for ChatGPT Team and Enterprise customers." Also: ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode gets a big upgrade (for free users, too) Priced at $25 per person per month, ChatGPT Team is geared toward any group that wants to share the AI tool. This can include an entire company or a department within an organization. In contrast, ChatGPT Enterprise is geared toward large businesses with a minimum of 150 people and is priced according to the specific requirements of the customer. Privacy and security are always concerns when an AI is unleashed on sensitive internal data. Gonzalez stressed that ChatGPT Team comes with security and privacy controls that administrators can manage. He added that OpenAI doesn't train its models on any Team or Enterprise account data. ChatGPT gets smarter: OpenAI adds internal data referencing
Join our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest updates and exclusive content on industry-leading AI coverage. Learn More OpenAI has finally added a long-requested feature for ChatGPT users: the ability to reference internal knowledge sources. ChatGPT Team users, one of the company's paid tiers, can connect internal knowledge databases directly to the platform during this beta period, bringing company-specific information. A feature many enterprises say would give better responses to questions. This lets users perform semantic searches of their data, link directly to internal sources in responses, get the most relevant and up-to-date context, and ensure that ChatGPT understands internal company lingo. Right now, ChatGPT Team admins can connect Google Drive to ChatGPT. However, Nate Gonzales, a product manager at OpenAI, said in a LinkedIn post that the team "is already working on the next wave of connectors, aiming to support all the key internal knowledge sources your team relies on today." These could include data analytics platforms and CRMs. "One of my favorite parts: over time, the model learns your org's unique language -- project names and acronyms, and team-specific terms -- while respecting your user permissions so responses are grounded in the right context. (We love our codenames at OpenAI ?)," Gonzales said. Internal documents lead to better institutional knowledge By connecting internal knowledge bases, ChatGPT Team could become more invaluable to users who already ask the platform strategy questions or for analysis. Querying company and domain-specific data gives users more context for their conversations and makes AI chatbots more useful. Unsurprisingly, many companies with AI platforms, chatbots, agents, or applications tout their proprietary internal knowledge graphs as a differentiator. This is also why enterprise search is a rising area of enterprise AI. Companies like Glean offer a way to use AI to find information throughout companies. ServiceNow acquired MoveWorks in a bid to boost its enterprise search capabilities. OpenAI already lets people upload documents directly from Google Drive or Microsoft's OneDrive. Google brought the power of Gemini to its Workspace product, meaning users could ask the model questions about their work while in a file. Perplexity added the capability to use internal documents as data sources. Control and customization OpenAI said controls around the data sources will look different for some users. While only admins can add data connectors, users from smaller teams can configure when ChatGPT will tap into internal knowledge bases and which drives. However, larger teams require the administrator to decide which shared Google Drives can be accessed. OpenAI said that ChatGPT knows when to access connected data sources for many common prompts. Users can still select "Internal Knowledge" in the message composer. The company said ChatGPT "fully respects existing organization settings and permissions," so users who do not have access to specific drives or documents cannot force ChatGPT to read those.

OpenAI has launched a new feature for ChatGPT Team that allows integration with internal company data, starting with Google Drive. This highly requested capability aims to make AI more useful for businesses by leveraging organization-specific information.
OpenAI has announced a significant upgrade to its ChatGPT Team offering, introducing the ability to integrate internal company data into the AI model's knowledge base. This new feature, currently in beta, addresses one of the most requested capabilities from business customers and aims to enhance the AI's utility within organizational contexts 1.
The initial rollout focuses on Google Drive integration, allowing ChatGPT to access and analyze files stored in a company's internal Google Drive 1. OpenAI's Product Leader, Nate Gonzalez, has indicated that this is just the beginning, with plans to expand support to various other internal knowledge sources, including collaboration tools, project management platforms, data analytics systems, and CRMs 2.
With this new capability, employees can leverage ChatGPT to answer questions, generate summaries, and create content based on their organization's internal documents. The AI can now perform semantic searches within company data, provide responses with direct links to internal sources, and offer the most relevant and up-to-date context 2.
A demonstration video showcased the feature's potential:
OpenAI has emphasized the importance of privacy and security in this new feature. ChatGPT Team comes with administrator-managed security and privacy controls. Importantly, OpenAI has stated that it does not train its models on any Team or Enterprise account data, addressing potential concerns about data misuse 1.
One of the key benefits of this integration is ChatGPT's ability to learn an organization's unique language over time. This includes project names, acronyms, and team-specific terms, allowing the AI to provide more contextually appropriate responses while respecting user permissions 2.
The internal data integration feature is being gradually rolled out to ChatGPT Team users, priced at $25 per person per month. ChatGPT Team is designed for groups within companies or entire organizations looking to share the AI tool. A similar capability is planned for ChatGPT Enterprise users, which caters to larger businesses with a minimum of 150 people 1.
This development positions ChatGPT more competitively in the enterprise AI market. It addresses a crucial need for businesses to leverage AI with their proprietary data, a feature that has been a differentiator for many AI platforms and enterprise search solutions. Companies like Glean and recent acquisitions in the space, such as ServiceNow's purchase of MoveWorks, highlight the growing importance of AI-powered enterprise search capabilities 2.
As AI continues to evolve and integrate more deeply with business operations, features like internal data referencing are likely to become standard offerings, reshaping how organizations interact with and leverage artificial intelligence in their day-to-day operations.
OpenAI is developing 'Connectors' for ChatGPT Team subscribers, enabling deeper integration with Google Drive and Slack. This feature aims to allow ChatGPT to access and analyze internal business data without manual file uploads.
