OPPO Find X8 Pro Review: Back with a Bang
OPPO launched the Find X8 series smartphones for the global markets and in India earlier today, and here we have the review of the Find X7 Pro, the top-end model in the series. The company is launching a Find series phone in India after 4 years since the Find X2 series launch in 2020. This gets a 1.5K 120Hz LTPO AMOLED display, is the first phone in India to be powered by MediaTek Dimensity 9400 SoC, has IP68 + IP69 ratings and packs a huge 5910mAh battery, bigger than the Find X7 Ultra. Let's dive into the review to find out what the company has to offer. The OPPO Find X8 Pro sports a 6.82-inch (2780×1264 pixels) 1.5K quad curved LTPO AMOLED display with 1-120Hz refresh rate. You can select standard FHD+ or switch to 1.5K. The display has reinforced glass for protection. The display is bright, since it has peak full-screen brightness of up to 1600 nits in direct sunlight and up to 4500 nits local brightness when viewing HDR content. It also offers different levels of brightness adjustment. It offers good colour output since it has 100% DCI-P3 color gamut. You can select from vivid, Natural and Pro screen colour modes. There is 2160Hz PWM Dimming that kicks in 70 nits or below and DC Dimming works when the brightness is above 70 nits. The phone also has HDR 10 and Dolby Vision support. There is also video color boost and image sharpener options. The phone has ultra narrow 1.9mm symmetric bezels. It has X-axis linear vibration motor. The phone has a tiny punch-hole that houses a 32-megapixel autofocus. Above the display, there is an earpiece on the top edge that works as a secondary speaker. It has an in-display fingerprint scanner which is optical. Coming to the button placements and ports, the power button is present on the right side along with the volume rockers. You also see a new camera shutter button for the first time. A double-tap launches the camera in just 0.4 seconds, and you can zoom in or out by smoothly sliding your finger along it, but it works only in landscape mode. You can click it to snap a photo, or hold the button to activate Lightning Snap for continuous burst shooting. The alert slider is present on the left side. The dual SIM slot, primary microphone, USB Type-C port and the loudspeaker grill are present on the bottom. The secondary microphone is on the top, along with an IR blaster. It has a solid aluminium frame. The phone has a curved glass back. In addition to the Space Black colour, it also comes in Pearl White that catches the light with a subtle, pearlescent shimmer. Even though the phone has round corners and a matte finish on the sides, it offers a good grip and a solid feel. The phone weighs 215 grams. Unlike the Find X7 Ultra, which was top-heavy due to the huge camera module, the Find X8 Pro has good weight balance and uses an innovative camera design, so the camera bump has been reduced by about 40% compared to its predecessor, said the company. The phone doesn't miss out on the IP68 ratings and also has IP69 ratings for the dust and water resistance, so that it can withstand jet sprays of water at up to 80°C. The camera UI in the ColorOS 15 is familiar. The Pro mode is the Master Mode. You get Night mode, Hi-Res, Panorama, Movie, Slo-mo, Time-lapse, Long Exposure, Dual-View video, Sticker, AI ID Photo, Text Scanner and XPAN. The phone uses Hasselblad color science and HyperTone Image Engine. Daylight shots were brilliant with a lot of details, thanks to the Sony Lytia sensor, and the dynamic range is better with auto HDR. The ultra-wide is decent, but wish it had a bigger sensor, even though it has a wide f/2.0 aperture. You can shoot macro images with the ultra-wide camera, and the macro shots are good. The phone gets a 3X periscope telephoto camera from the X7 Ultra, but has a slightly smaller sensor, while retaining the same 6x periscope telephoto camera that gives a tough competition to other camera-centric phones. Even at 30x zoom and beyond, the details are good, thanks to computational photography. The portrait does a good job in 1x, 3x and 6x modes. Low light shots are good with a lot of details and less noise. The night mode is useful and 32MP auto front camera does a good job. The bokeh shots good with good edge detection. Check out the camera samples It can record videos in up to 4K 60 fps video recording, slow motion 1080p at 240fps, 720p at up to 480 fps, and the front camera can also record 4K 60fps videos. All the four rear cameras support Dolby Vision HDR video recording. There is OIS and EIS, which does a good job. The phone also has portrait video recording, but it is limited to 1080p, which is a bummer. The Find X8 series are the first OPPO phones to run Android 15-based ColorOS 15 out of the box. The phone will get 5 Android updates and 6 years of security updates for the first time. ColorOS 15 brings minimalist aesthetic, featuring a visually harmonious and sophisticated interface, enhanced by integrating diffuse shadows, natural blurs, and dual-layer blending. There are redesigned icons and widgets, the new Flux Theme that lets you customize layouts and effects to create a unique setup that seamlessly transitions between the Always-On Display, Lock Screen, and wallpaper. The UI is also smoother to use. This also brings several new features such as AI Clarity Enhance that can enhance low resolution images, AI Unblur and AI Reflection Remover that can remove reflections from images. The AI Studio that was first introduced with the Reno12 series transforms photos into digital avatars using Generative AI. The AI ToolBox has AI Summary that lets you extract text and generate summaries from a page with just one tap, AI Speak that reads content aloud, and the AI Writer can correct spelling and grammar and also rewrites and polishes text based on your chosen writing style. The new Recorder app, powered by Gemini 1.5 Pro, can generate summaries of audio, the Notes app now offers a one-tap layout formatting feature and the new Documents app can summarize documents in seven languages, also including pro-grade translation and rewriting. Google Gemini is now integrated in ColorOS 15, and it also has the circle to search feature. The new Touch to Share lets you transfer files with a single NFC tap between their Find X8 Pro and an iPhone or iPad (requires O+ Connect app on the iOS device). Out of 16GB LPDD5X RAM, you get 15.03GB of usable RAM, and about 8GB of RAM is free when default apps are running in the background. It also has DRE or dynamic RAM expansion feature, which uses the built-in storage as RAM. This has up to 12GB of additional RAM expansion. Out of 512GB UFS 4.0 storage, you get about 457.92GB of free storage. In addition to Google apps, it comes pre-loaded with FinShell Pay, Facebook, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Myntra and Spotify apps. It has an in-display fingerprint sensor that unlocks the phone quickly, but it still has an optical fingerprint scanner, and doesn't use an ultrasonic scanner which is present in most flagships. You can add up to 5 fingerprints. You can also use the fingerprint for app local and payments in apps. Furthermore, you can change the fingerprint animation and also disable it, and also enable quick launch option to launch apps directly from the lock screen by holding the fingerprint. The phone also has face unlock feature. It has customizable Smart, Movie, Game and Music modes. It doesn't have FM Radio support. Audio through the stereo speakers is good without any distortion even in full volume. Audio through earphones is good as well. This has Widevine L1, so that you can play HD content on streaming apps. There is HDR and Dolby Vision support, HDR and Dolby Vision work on Netflix, and HDR works for YouTube. The OPPO Find X8 Pro has support for n1/n2/n3/n5/n7/n8/n12/n20/n25/n26/n28/n38/n40/n41/n66/n75/n77/n7 5G bands. It has VoWi-Fi and VoLTE, with support for Carrier Aggregation on 4G, and it also has eSIM support. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi 7 802.11 be (2.4GHz + 5GHz) with triple antennas for gaming, Bluetooth 5.4, GPS (L1+L5), GLONASS(G1), BEIDOU (B1I+B1C+B2a+B2b), Galileo(E1+E5a+E5b), QZSS(L1+L5), NavIC:(L5), NFC, USB Type-C 3.2 Gen1. Moving on, the call quality is good, and we did not face any call drops and the earpiece volume was loud. The Find X8 Pro's body SAR is 0.64W/Kg and head SAR is at 1.19/Kg that is well under the limit in India, which is 1.6 W/kg (over 1 g). This is the first phone in India to be powered by MediaTek Dimensity 9400 SoC. It has a new 1-3-4 microarchitecture that uses 1 x ARM Cortex-X925 performance cores clocked at 3.62GHz, 3 x Cortex-X4 performance cores clocked at 3.30 GHz and 4 x Cortex-A720 effeciency cores clocked at 2.4GHz. Its single-core performance is improved by 35% compared to the previous generation, and its multi-core performance is improved by 28%, according to the company. It is fabricated using the second-generation TSMC's 3nm process Technology and promises 40% improved power efficiency. The phone has a sophisticated cooling system with a high-efficiency vapour chamber, a graphite layer for enhanced heat dissipation, and a highly conductive thermal gel strategically placed within the dual-layer motherboard, said OPPO. We did not face any issues or frame drops in the graphic-intensive games like COD, BGMI and Genshin Impact. Thermal throttling was there. In 3D Mark wild life stress test, it scored 57.3%, and the temperature shot up from 33 to 41 degrees. This is better than the Find X7 Ultra. Check out some synthetic benchmark scores below. Coming to the battery life, the phone packs a whopping 5910mAh silicon-carbon (typical) battery, the biggest on any Find series phone till date. It can easily last for a day, even with heavy use. I got over 6 and half hours of screen on time with close to 2 days of, mostly on Wi-Fi, and occasional 5G use in 120Hz in 1.5K resolution. Since the phone has support for 80W SuperVOOC fast charging, it can charge from up to 100% in about an hour. There are smart charging, option to stop charging at 80%, and the smart rapid charging can charge the device faster if the battery is too low. The phone has 50W AIRVOOC wireless flash charging, and also supports 10W wireless reverse charging. However, the company is not selling the 50W charger in India. In China, it also sells a magnetic charger. The OPPO Find X7 Pro is an impressive comeback for the OPPO in India when it comes to the flagships. It stands out when it comes to camera, thanks to the new improved sensors and Hypertone imaging engine. The phone also shines when it comes to display, performance, and user experience, and it also has a good build and comes with both IP68 and IP69 ratings. Even though there is 4K HDR 60fps shooting with all the camera, the portrait video still limited to 1080p, and the phone still uses an optical fingerprint scanner when others have finally switched to ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is a good alternative since the price has come down since the launch, but the S25 Ultra is around the corner. The latest Google Pixel 9 Pro with offers is also a good option. The OPPO Find X8 Pro is priced at Rs. 99,999 for the single 16GB + 512GB model. It is available to pre-order starting today from OPPO India online store, Flipkart and offline stores and will go on sale from December 3rd.
