You Can Now Use AI to Create Playlists on Spotify
You may have noticed generative artificial intelligence making its way into one or two apps and gadgets in recent times, and you can now use the tech to create new playlists in Spotify: The AI Playlist feature is now live in the U.S. on Android and iOS, after testing in the UK and Australia, though you do need to be a Premium subscriber to get access to it. This works in the same way as AI text and image chatbots, in that you come up with your own text prompt that forms the basis of a new playlist -- it might be "songs for a wistful mood" or "songs for a birthday party with a bunch of 5-year-olds." Here's how to get started with the feature, plus some old-school music discovery ideas that might work better. This new Spotify feature is another reminder that the term "AI" is a broad one. The algorithms that already power your recommended playlists in Spotify also rely on artificial intelligence of a different type -- but this new AI Playlist tool takes the idea up a notch. Instead of just seeing songs linked to the music you currently listen to and like, you can be much more specific about what you want. "The more specific you can be, the better," Spotify says. "The most successful playlists are generated with prompts that contain a mix of genres, moods, artists, or decades, so get creative! You can also reference places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, and even emojis." That gives you a lot of scope to work with. However, there are some guardrails in place: You're not able to create prompts using references to brand names or current events. There are also safeguards in place to cut out offensive prompts, so it's probably not a great idea to try and test the boundaries of decency with this new tool. Assuming you're a Spotify Premium user, open up the app on Android or iOS, then go to the Your Library tab. Tap the + (plus) button in the top right corner, and pick AI Playlist from the menu that pops up. Now you have to get creative: Describe what you want from your new playlist with as much detail as you can. You can base it around moods, events, genres, your favorite artists, a time of day, an activity, or whatever you like. You'll also see some suggestions above the text entry box, which you can use if you're not getting any inspiration for your own prompts. Swipe left to see more recommendations -- you'll see you're able to limit your playlists to a particular duration or to a particular decade of music, for example, which then might give you more ideas about how to generate your own custom playlists. Submit your prompt, and a playlist appears. You can refine it further using the prompt box at the bottom of the screen, tap on any song to hear a preview clip of it, or swipe left on a song to remove it from the list. When you're ready to accept the list of songs you've been given, tap Create to save it. Based on my limited time testing the AI Playlist feature, the underlying algorithms don't seem to be too different to those deployed across the rest of Spotify (when you ask it to automatically fill in a playlist, for example). Mention "indie rock," and you'll get a lot of the same songs as you would with a general search. However, the text prompt interface gives you more flexibility when building a playlist. This is AI, so of course there are misfires (Spotify has stuck a "beta" label on it too). When asked for "songs like R.E.M. that aren't R.E.M.," the AI returned -- you guessed it -- a playlist that included some R.E.M. tracks. Some refining is often required, as is usually the case when producing text or images with generative AI, and the ability to add to prompts can be useful. It seems that AI Playlist does take your previous listening history into account when making playlists, and it will mix in songs you've heard before with tracks that are popular elsewhere. The prompt "upbeat songs for a long winter drive" returned tunes from artists including Future Islands, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, and the 1975 -- so a mix of stuff I've already heard and stuff I haven't. This is certainly an interesting idea, and even if the playlists aren't massively different from what you can already find by digging through the recommendations on Spotify, it's fun to play around with certain ideas: Prompts like "songs to help me forget the past" or "the perfect playlist for gazing out across a rainy cityscape," for example (the latter returned Bon Iver, Tracy Chapman, and Radiohead, by the way). As with much of AI, how this actually works isn't clear, but I can't help feeling a little turned off by algorithm-based, AI recommendations in general. They're based on a lot of data points, sure, but they can often lack the serendipitous or left-field discoveries that used to come from picking up a music magazine, flicking through music video channels, or getting mixtapes made by friends. Personally, I still prefer the old ways of discovering music, including reading album reviews and band interviews, and tapping friends for recommendations (the Blend feature in Spotify is actually really good for this). Or, to give another recent example, checking out bands that are supporting bands I already like -- a choice curated by human beings and their tastes, which often leads to some new favorites.

You can now make AI playlists with Spotify in the US -- and we tried it
After coming to the U.K. and Australia in April, Spotify's AI playlist function is now available for users in the US, New Zealand, Canada, and Ireland. In Spotify's own words: "AI Playlist combines Spotify's powerful personalization technology with generative AI so users can turn their most creative ideas into playlists." What does that mean for you? You know how you can tell a generative AI model how you want a picture to look and it spits out a seven-fingered abomination? It's a bit like that, only you write about your ideal playlist, and Spotify's AI playlist bot scours the service for music that fits the bill, forming a slick playlist just for you. The feature is still in beta at the moment, but accessing it is super easy, particularly if you follow Spotify's steps in the image below. But is it any good? It's... it's certainly a thing. Its definitions of certain genre terms are definitely slightly out. Let's make an example. I love heavy music: And I mean heavy music. Crushing, obliterating -- those are the kinds of words I use to describe my favorite music. So when I asked the AI playlist maker to create a playlist of "the heaviest music imaginable", that's exactly what I was hoping for. If you look below, it didn't deliver. Now, you can refine the playlist -- so I did. "No, heavier". And, sure enough, rather than baby's first heavy music (sorry, Slipknot fans), it spat out some hardcore and called it a day. But I want more. I want music that feels like there's a grindstone around my neck, and I'm being made to do manual labour. Like I'm being physically assualted by the musicians. "HEAVIER". Sure enough, this time I got what I wanted -- heavy music from the depths, Celtic Frost, Dragged into the Sunlight. The kind of music most people balk at. Excellent. Now my example is about as niche as niche could be, but it highlights that you need to work with the playlist builder a little to get what you really want. Of course, if you just want something to chill out with while you and your friends have a barbeque, then typing in "chill, family-friendly summer barbeque vibes" gives you a suitable playlist to grill meat to. Look, I'm actually a terrible example of someone to try out the AI playlist builder. I like to carefully construct my playlists until I've an hours-long monstrosity filled with music that suits that specific mood or title. To me, playlist building is an art -- and, like a picture of a nice view, I'd rather a person make it rather than a learning AI model. But that's just me. For everyone else, the playlist maker could be quite a lot of fun, and actually quite useful. If you've got a party coming up, a chill session with your old high school friends, or even a wedding (and you want to save money on increasingly expensive DJs), then you could get some use out of it. Just bear in mind (particularly you, wedding people) that a person doing it is going to do a much better job. It's a nice addition to Spotify's slate of AI features, slotting perfectly next to the likes of the AI DJ that tells you what's coming next when you let a playlist or album play out and the 'what's next' algorithm takes over. Neither feature is going to pull me back to your service though Spotify -- not until you give me my Spotify HiFi.

Spotify wants to make you an AI Playlist for every occasion
The feature generates custom playlists based on niche prompts. It first became available for Premium users in the UK and Australia back in April 2024. The tool is still in beta and allows subscribers to choose from prompts or write their own. For example, if you're looking for the perfect Sunday morning cleaning playlist, then, theoretically, Spotify's AI should be able to generate one tailored to your tastes. In a blog post the music streaming giant recommends subscribers stick to "genre," "mood" or "artist" prompts to generate the most successful playlists, but it stipulates that anything from movie characters to emojis can be used. Examples include, "Upbeat folk music for a scenic fall road trip," and "2000 era hype jams for the tailgate." While some users might like not having to painstakingly curate their playlists, as Spotify leans further into AI, users stray further from their own unique taste. Instead of picking out the upbeat folk music that reminds you of fall memories or songs a trusted friend played for you, the AI Playlist tool encourages you to take a passive role in your listening, turning AI into a tastemaker. Previously, if you opted out of making your own playlist, you might search on the platform for a tailgate playlist made by another human user. Now, Spotify wants an algorithm to do it for you. While you can still opt to make your playlists or listen to other user-generated playlists, the more "personalization" features Spotify launches, the less intuitive that behavior becomes. To try out AI Playlist navigate to "Your Library" in the bottom right corner of your screen. Then, select the "+" sign in the top right corner and tap "AI Playlist." That should open up the chat tool, and from there, type out your playlist prompt.

Can't be bothered to make your own Spotify playlists? AI will now do it for you in the US
Spotify's AI Playlist feature is finally rolling out to those on the Premium plan in the US, albeit the functionality is still in beta. Obviously enough, it uses AI to generate a playlist based on your request, and the feature was previously made available in the UK and Australia some time ago (nearly half a year back, in fact). The AI Playlist is now available to users in the US and Canada, as well as Ireland and New Zealand, on mobile devices (Android and iOS). It's a typical generative AI experience: you enter a prompt requesting music with a particular vibe, or for an occasion, from a given decade, or pretty much any parameter you want really, and the AI interprets that. Said interpretation doesn't always go down all that well, and from what we've seen thus far, the AI does tend to play it safe (selecting songs you've listened to, or more commercial offerings as opposed to left-field artists). That makes sense in some ways, but may disappoint some listeners after more obscure tunes. If you're really lazy and can't even be bothered to think of a query for the AI to work off, there are suggested prompts provided by Spotify, too. As already noted, the feature is still in beta, so some roughness around the edges is only to be expected. As Spotify tells us: "While AI Playlist is designed to be fun, this feature is still in beta and won't produce results for non-music-related prompts, like current events or specific brands. We also have measures in place around prompts that are offensive, so please prompt responsibly." If you want to try out the AI playlist generation, tap Your Library (bottom-right of the app) and then the '+' button at the top-right of the screen, where you can select 'AI Playlist.'

Spotify's AI can create playlists based on your input, and it's now available in the US
Back in April, Spotify introduced a new feature called AI Playlist, allowing Premium users in the U.K. and Australia to create personalized playlists using AI. Now, this fun tool is expanding to more users. Starting today, Premium subscribers in the U.S., Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand can join the AI Playlist beta on both Android and iOS devices. Related How to download Spotify music onto your Apple Watch Offline music playback on Apple Watch isn't limited to Apple Music, so Spotify users can join in on the fun too. How to access AI Playlist Using AI Playlist is straightforward. Open the Spotify app, head to "Your Library" at the bottom-right corner, and tap the "+" button in the top-right. Select "AI Playlist," and you're off to the races. You can either choose from suggested prompts or get creative and type in your own. The more specific your prompt, the better your playlist will be. Think "chill beats for working at a coffee shop" or "upbeat tunes for my morning run." Curate like a pro Once Spotify generates a playlist based on your prompt, you can fine-tune it by previewing and deleting tracks or adding more details to get closer to your perfect vibe. When you're happy with it, tap "Create," and your playlist is saved to your library automatically. Whether you're a playlist expert or just starting out, this tool makes it easy to curate a personalized music experience. "Driving through the desert roads of Joshua Tree National Park in California was an unforgettable experience. To relive those magical moments, I used the prompt, 'Desert house music for driving through Joshua Tree," says Renato Gamboa, Senior iOS Engineer at Spotify. "I knew AI Playlist nailed it when it suggested some of my favorite tracks. Wanting to hear some fresh desert house tracks, I refined my prompt to include only tracks released within the last month. Now I'm back on those desert drives with brand-new hits, making the journey feel even more special!" Limitations and promises AI Playlist is still in beta, which means it has some limitations. Don't expect it to make playlists for non-music topics like current events or brands, and keep it clean -- Spotify has measures in place to prevent offensive prompts. But the team says it's committed to improving the experience as more users get their hands on it, so hopefully it improves and it also becomes more widely available over time.

Spotify's AI Playlist creation tool lands in the U.S. | Digital Trends
Spotify today announced that its new AI Playlist feature that allows you to use text prompts to generate personalized playlists is now available to Spotify Premium subscribers in the U.S., Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. First made available in beta form in April to Spotify Premium users in Australia and the U.K., the AI Playlist feature uses generative AI and allows users to either choose from a range of premade suggested playlist ideas or to use a text prompt to type in whatever they want. Recommended Videos After navigating to the Your Library section of the Spotify app in iOS or Android, tap the "+" symbol in the top corner to reveal a new "AI Playlist" option where you can type pretty much anything. Spotify's press release uses prompt examples, such as "upbeat pop music for my European summer vacation" and "a romantic playlist for date night at home," that the company says will "offer a personalized selection of songs that match the vibe you're going for, which you can revise and refine by typing in additional prompts." We haven't had a chance to check it out for ourselves yet (at press time, the feature was yet to be available), but the music streaming service says that the feature will create a playlist of 30 songs based on your prompt that you can modify, save, and share. Spotify's AI Playlist feature is still in beta form and is available today to those who subscribe to Spotify Premium, which costs $12 per month for individuals, $17 per month for the Dua plan, and $20 per month for families.

Spotify's AI Playlist Tool Rolling Out to US Premium Users
Spotify's AI Playlist feature, which turns text prompts into song collections, is now rolling out to Premium subscribers in the US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. The new playlist creation ability will first be available on iOS and Android devices. Instead of manually picking songs for a playlist or having Spotify add suggestions based on past listening, the AI Playlist option will let users type in prompts to create a unique collections of songs. "The most successful playlists are generated with prompts that contain a mix of genres, moods, artists, or decades, so get creative," the company says. "You can also reference places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, and even emojis." AI Playlist first launched in beta in April in the UK and Australia. It's still in beta with the latest country expansions and won't produce results for things like current events or specific brands. Spotify also says there are safeguards in place for prompts that are offensive. Once available, you can get to the feature by tapping on Library then the plus sign in the top-right corner. Select AI Playlist to get started. This isn't Spotify's first AI experiment. In early 2023, the streaming music service added an AI DJ to inject a sense of personality as it curated songs based on listening history. Despite Apple Intelligence being a recent marquee announcement from Cupertino, it has yet to announce similar AI features for Apple Music. Its music service only got a few tweaks in iOS 18, such as a personalized section for new music releases and an adjustment to how the queue system works.

Spotify's AI Playlist now available in US - here's how to get it
With the help of generative AI, Spotify can create a detailed playlist through a simple text prompt. The beta feature is expanding to four more countries. Spotify's AI Playlist is going global. The platform revealed recently that its beta feature is expanding from its initial testing grounds to an additional four countries: the US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. AI Playlist first became available to Spotify Premium users in April 2024 in the UK and Australia. As the name suggests, the tool creates playlists through the power of generative AI like ChatGPT. Also: Spotify wants you to get Deluxe, a more expensive version with lossless audio and other perks Here's how it works: From "Your Library" you first tap the Plus button over at the top-right corner and select "AI Playlist." You then choose a pre-made prompt or create one of your own. Spotify recommends users "get creative and be specific." The more details you give the AI, the more precise and personal the resulting playlist will be. For example, you can command the AI to pull together a series of tracks for a romantic date night at home or create a mix tape of upbeat pop songs. Spotify claims that "the most successful playlists" are made utilizing prompts that mention different "genres, moods, artists, [and] decades". After receiving a prompt, the feature generates a preview tracklist that you can edit. You can either delete a song or command the AI "to refine the playlist with additional prompts." Once you're happy with the selection, hit Create and the playlist will be saved automatically to Your Library. Pretty simple stuff. As before, AI Playlist will only be available in English to Premium subscribers on Android and iOS. There's nothing yet for Spotify AI on the web or the desktop app. Also: The best headphones you can buy: Expert tested Spotify says that because the feature is still in beta, it "won't produce results for non-music-related prompts" such as current events. Does this imply that the final version will support non-music inputs? We can't say for sure. Also, the company states it implemented security measures to reject potentially offensive prompts. No word yet on when the AI Playlist will exit its beta state.

Spotify's AI Playlists are now available for Premium users in the US
It creates and edits custom tracklists from simple text prompts. Spotify's beta AI Playlist feature is now available for Premium users in the US, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand. It lets you create and refine custom playlists using text prompts. It initially arrived in April in the UK and Australia. The company describes it as a tool "to effortlessly turn your most creative ideas into playlists." Spotify provided several examples, including "Upbeat folk music for a scenic fall road trip" and "2000 era hype jams for the tailgate." If its initial results don't quite hit the mark, you can refine the playlist with further prompts, such as "less peppy" or "hold the Nickelback." Spotify says the feature leans on personalization, choosing tracks it thinks you'll like based on your listening habits. The company says the AI produces the best results with prompts about genre, mood or artists. But you can try topics like animals, activities, movie characters, colors and emojis, too. Premium subscribers will find AI Playlists in the Spotify mobile app. Navigate to Your Library, tap the + button and choose "AI Playlist." Spotify launches AI playlist creation to meet your specific music needs - 9to5Mac
AI is being infused into so many different services and software features we use every day. Now, it's impacting the music we listen to as well. Today Spotify announced that it's rolling out AI playlist generation -- formerly in a limited test -- to several new countries, including the US. Here's how it works. One of the modern challenges in media is that there's so much content available, but not enough good curation tools to find it all. Apple Music, for example, has a team of human editors who build curated playlists. But that can only go so far to meet a diverse set of users' needs. AI playlist creation looks like a great new avenue for discovering music for any and every occasion. From Spotify Newsroom: Creating a playlist with AI Playlist is as easy as entering a unique prompt into the chat, like "upbeat pop music for my European summer vacation" or "a romantic playlist for date night at home." Spotify will then offer a personalized selection of songs that match the vibe you're going for, which you can revise and refine by typing in additional prompts. The more specific you can be, the better. The most successful playlists are generated with prompts that contain a mix of genres, moods, artists, or decades, so get creative! You can also reference places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, and even emojis. AI playlist generation is currently limited to Premium subscribers on iOS and Android devices. We'll see if Spotify ends up including free users later on. I haven't tried the feature out yet, but it sounds very promising. It's launching in beta, so I expect the results at first may not be all that great. But over time there's a lot of potential here. Apple has done a lot of work creating playlists and stations to meet various moods and situations. But it's hard to beat the power of letting a user type their own ideal playlist description. I love how Spotify even encourages being as specific as possible. One of the issues I've encountered with Apple's own 'Made for You' playlists, and its curated editorial playlists, is that they're often not quite what I'm looking for. But if I can type a request and have Apple Intelligence make a playlist for me -- which can then be further refined with more input -- that sounds like a killer feature for Apple Music. Are you excited about AI playlist generation? How has the feature worked for you? Let us know in the comments.

For example, users can say things like, "Give me some funky and upbeat songs to help me unpack my boxes in my new home." The possibilities are basically endless, with Spotify claiming millions of playlists have been generated and enjoyed. AI Playlist is now available for Premium users in the US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand.

Spotify has expanded the availability of its AI Playlist tool to the U.S., Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand after initially launching it for Premium subscribers in the U.K. and Australia. This feature, currently in beta on Android and iOS devices, allows users to create personalized playlists based on written prompts. For instance, users can enter "a romantic playlist for date night at home" and receive a customized selection of songs to match the mood. The playlist can be further refined by adding more prompts, and Spotify also provides suggestions for prompts. Now's your chance to try out Spotify's AI-generated playlists
Announcing the broader rollout in a press release on Tuesday morning, Spotify confirmed that AI Playlist will also now be available to Premium users in Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. It remains in a beta development phase and is available for both iOS and Android users. AI Playlist helps you find songs to listen to based on simple prompts. For example, you could ask it for "chill tunes for a rainy day" or "energetic tracks for a workout," and AI Playlist will generate a mix of songs that match what you're looking for. The more specific you are with your prompt, the better the playlist it can create. You can even tweak and refine the playlist by giving it additional prompts, like telling it to use more of a certain genre or to omit a particular artist.

Spotify's AI Playlist is now rolling out to more Premium Subscribers - here's who's getting it next
You'll need to be a Premium subscriber to use this AI chatbot to build playlists If you've been a Spotify premium subscriber eager to try out the music streaming service's AI chops at building playlists based on prompts, we have good news. After rolling out AI Playlist to Premium subscribers in the UK and Australia earlier in 2024, the feature is now expanding to the United States, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand in English. So, you can now use Spotify's AI to create a playlist based on a prompt that can be as short as a single word. You will need to be a Premium member, though, which in the United States starts at $11.99 a month for an individual, $16.99 per month for Duo (aka two accounts), or $19.99 a month for a family subscription. The feature, dubbed AI Playlist, can be found on the Spotify app for Android or iOS - not on desktop or the web. Just ensure you're running the latest version of the app. For instance, I have no updates, and I'm not yet seeing it. Once the feature arrives in your Spotify app associated with the right subscription, you'll open the app and tap "Library" in the bottom right corner. Then, hit the plus sign in the top right and find AI Playlist as an option. From there, you're off to the races as you enter a prompt and watch as a playlist is created. Spotify notes that the more detail provided the better, but you can also refine it further after its first list is made and give it another prompt. You can use words, numbers, or emojis, but Spotify won't allow offensive words. It also suggests when you're first playing around with this feature, be specific - potentially with a genre, location, or even characters. As with any AI, specifically a chatbot, which is close to what this is, results will vary, and Spotify is quick to repeat that AI Playlist is in beta. Considering Spotify is already pretty spot on with music recommendations, adding in this level of customization and personalization via AI is a cool feature that we're eager to try out. It's rolling out now in English for Premium subscribers in United States, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand now after being available for several months in the UK and Australia. If you're keen to try it, keep your Spotify app updated on your mobile and check to see if "AI Playlist" appears. Until then, you'll need to create your next fire playlist the old-fashioned way ... manually.

This feature, which is in beta on Android and iOS devices, was initially made available in the UK and Australia earlier this year. The AI playlist combines Spotify's personalisation technology with generative AI and eligible users can access the feature by selecting the 'Your Library' tab on the bottom right corner of the screen and then by pressing the '+' icon on the top right. Users can enter in text prompts like "something for a lazy Sunday indoors" or "getting ready with the girls for a party", which the AI will then use to curate playlists that fit the descriptions of the prompts. Spotify said users will also be able to "revise and refine" the playlists generated by typing in further prompts with extra specifications, such as "more R&B" or "slower". However, the feature won't produce results for non-music-related prompts such as current events or specific brands. The platform also said that it has "measures in place around prompts that are offensive", advising users to "prompt responsibly". According to Spotify, its earlier AI roll-out in the UK and Australia was a success, with the streaming platform claiming that millions of playlists have been created so far. In 2023, the streaming service introduced two features using OpenAI technology - a podcast translator that matches the speaker's voice in different languages starting with Spanish, French and German, and an AI-powered DJ that suggests music and provides commentary. Last year, the streaming platform also got a little pricier in 53 countries including Ireland, as the monthly charge for a single Spotify premium subscription rose from €9.99 a month to €10.99 a month, while the duo subscription also rose by €1 to €14.99 a month. Spotify has launched an AI-powered playlist creation feature in the US, with plans for global expansion. This new tool allows users to generate personalized playlists through text prompts, leveraging artificial intelligence to curate music selections.
Spotify, the popular music streaming platform, has introduced an innovative AI-powered playlist creation feature for its users in the United States. This new tool allows subscribers to generate custom playlists using simple text prompts, marking a significant advancement in personalized music curation 1.
The AI playlist creator is remarkably user-friendly. Users can access the feature by tapping the "+" button in the Spotify mobile app and selecting "AI playlist." They are then prompted to input a text description, which can include various elements such as genre, mood, activity, or even fictional scenarios. The AI processes this input and generates a playlist of 30 songs within seconds 2.
After the initial playlist generation, users have the option to refine their results. They can adjust the playlist by removing songs, adding new ones, or even regenerating the entire list with a modified prompt. This iterative process allows for a highly personalized music experience tailored to individual preferences 3.
The introduction of AI-generated playlists represents a significant shift in how users discover new music. By leveraging artificial intelligence, Spotify aims to enhance music exploration and introduce listeners to tracks they might not have found otherwise. This feature is particularly useful for those who find manual playlist creation time-consuming or challenging 4.
While the AI playlist creator is currently available only in the United States, Spotify has announced plans for a broader rollout. The company is set to expand this feature to users in the United Kingdom and Australia in the coming weeks, with other English-speaking countries to follow. This phased approach allows Spotify to refine the AI's capabilities and ensure a smooth user experience across different markets 5.
The integration of AI in playlist creation has potential implications for artists and the music industry as a whole. It could potentially increase exposure for lesser-known artists whose music aligns with users' preferences. However, it also raises questions about the balance between human curation and AI-driven recommendations in shaping music consumption patterns.
As with any AI-powered feature, there are considerations regarding user data and privacy. Spotify assures that the AI playlist creator adheres to their existing privacy policies, but users are encouraged to review these policies to understand how their data and music preferences are utilized in this new feature 1.
