Spotify brings AI-powered Prompted Playlists to the U.S. and Canada
Spotify is rolling out Prompted Playlists, a new AI playlist creation tool, to Premium subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. The feature, which was originally tested in New Zealand, allows users to make a playlist by describing what they want to hear, in their own words. Prompted Playlists builds on an earlier AI playlist product, launched in 2024, which allowed for simpler prompts like "get focused at work with instrumental electronica," or "get pumped up with fun, upbeat, and positive songs." Instead, the new Prompted Playlists feature lets users explain in more detail, and in a conversational mode, what they want to hear. In a demo to press, for example, Spotify showed off a playlist that was built on a long prompt, which read "Find me one artist I haven't listened to yet, but would probably love, or an artist I've only heard one or two songs from, and introduce me to them. Build a playlist of songs that'll give me an overview of their catalog so it feels like I'm getting to know them. Put the songs you think I'll like the most in the top five spots." The idea behind the new feature, explains J.J. Italiano, Head of Global Music Curation and Discovery at Spotify, is to make it possible for anyone to build a playlist, even if they don't know much about music curation or the correct words to use. "For most people, isn't a part of their job. You don't always have the time or the energy to keep building the perfect playlist every time your mood changes, and that's where prompted playlists will come in," said Italiano, whose team makes popular Spotify playlists like Today's Top Hits, New Music Friday, and Rap Caviar, among others. "This gives listeners access to that creative process without needing to know genres, or years, or industry language. You don't need the right words. You just need your words." "If you can describe a feeling, you can make a playlist," he added. The AI behind the feature analyzes the world of music in real time, including "trends, charts, culture, and history," Spotify says, as well as the user's entire listening history since joining the service. While the playlists are personalized to their creator by default, users can also use the tool to help break out of their usual listening habits and get different recommendations. That is, they can specifically tell the AI not to use their own listening history as a reference point, or they can direct it to introduce them to songs they've never heard before, as in the example above. The prompts don't have to include any musical terminology, either. For instance, users could ask for a playlist inspired by the weather or a favorite TV show. Because the prompts are shareable, the feature could also lead to a new type of creator -- one who makes AI prompts that others will want to try. While the prompt itself would be the same, each user's resulting playlist would differ, as it's personalized to their own tastes and listening history. They could then modify that playlist further, if they chose. Spotify says Prompted Playlists are the "next evolution" of its earlier AI playlist feature. The new version is more tuned into real-time music trends and culture, understands the full arc of a user's listening behavior -- not just what they've listened to recently -- and offers deeper control. However, the older AI playlist feature will not be shut down. Instead, the two products will live side-by-side, which could lead to consumer confusion, given the similarities. The feature will have some usage limits in place because it's still in beta, and those could change over time. It's also only available in the English language for the time being. The company couldn't say when Prompted Playlists would reach global subscribers, noting that it first wants to learn from these initial markets to inform future launches.

When she's not writing, she likes to dote over her cat, sip black coffee and try out new horror movies. Spotify has already dabbled in AI playlists, but on Thursday, the company unveiled a new tool that generates a playlist based on your description of an idea, feeling or moment. The feature, called Prompted Playlist, also takes into account your listening history and current cultural trends. Don't miss any of our unbiased tech content and lab-based reviews. Add CNET as a preferred Google source. Prompted Playlist is rolling out in beta to Premium users in the US and Canada, following testing in New Zealand. The tool uses a prompt, real-time information about the music world and your full Spotify listening history to produce playlists. In a news release, Spotify said listeners in New Zealand are creating playlists with "songs tied to specific moments, like late nights during the winter, while filtering out tracks they've overplayed recently." Others, according to Spotify, are "mixing in artists connected to current pop culture moments and viral trends." Spotify recently announced a round of price increases, including in the US, that affect new customers immediately and existing customers in February. If you're sticking with the music streaming service, here's how you can try out the new Prompted Playlist beta feature.

Spotify's Prompted Playlists took over for me at a party - and didn't disappoint
Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET's key takeaways * Spotify unveiled its new Prompted Playlist feature. * You can use a natural language prompt to create a playlist. * The feature personalizes your prompt with your listening history. Spotify launched a new Prompted Playlist feature on Thursday, which allows users to describe the type of playlist they'd like to hear, including emotions, pop culture references, feelings, and more, using natural language. The playlist generation also takes into account your listening history and current music trends to move away from automation and toward collaboration, according to Spotify. Also: I didn't need this, but I used AI to 3D print a tiny figurine of myself - here's how The feature was originally launched in beta in New Zealand in December 2025 and is now rolling out to Premium listeners in beta across the US and Canada by the end of January. To learn how to access it and how it worked for me, keep reading below. My experience Prompted Playlists is not to be confused with Spotify's existing AI playlist; it's meant to go a step beyond that, as it not only creates the playlist for you but keeps it updated and takes your listening history into account. Another unique feature is that you can choose whether to refresh the playlist daily, weekly, or not at all. You can even pick the day of the week that it refreshes. Using it is fun and as straightforward as described. I tested it at my friend's birthday party -- a perfect opportunity, as I was on the AUX. Having just contributed to my friend's playlist, I knew the vibe I was looking for and used that for the prompt. Also: This might be the best way to get medical advice from ChatGPT - and it's free to use My prompt was: Can you create a playlist for a birthday party for my best friend who is turning 25. The vibes are songs that we would all know and can dance to, but it doesn't have to be EDM necessarily. Some inspirations are Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae, and Charli XCX. Within seconds, Spotify created a playlist with a cover, title, and description that fulfilled my prompt criteria pretty well. Many of the songs on this playlist were already on the playlist my friends and I had curated originally. In practice, I found it to be similar to the Spotify ChatGPT integration, which lets you describe what you want your playlist to sound like. However, again, the ChatGPT integration lacks the aforementioned updating and personalization options that would take the curation a step forward, in theory. Also: AI is quietly poisoning itself and pushing models toward collapse - but there's a cure Do I think this will replace the human playlist curating experience? No, because music is so deeply personal. Even if Prompted Playlists understands and pulls from your listening history, it may not know the memories or feelings you associate with each song. That said, I do think it's a really helpful starting point for inspiration, or perhaps if you are in a rush and don't want to take the chance on a completely random playlist. Try it yourself Once you are granted access to the feature, you just need to tap the (+) on the bottom right within the Spotify app and select Prompted Playlist. Then you can describe what you want to hear and click generate. If you don't know where to start, it gives you prompts you can copy and paste.

New Spotify AI Playlists Use Your History, Cultural Trends to Build Specific Mixes
Spotify is expanding its AI-generated playlists further than ever before with a new tool called Prompted Playlist. The new option is rolling out in beta to users in the US and Canada, and Spotify aims to have it ready for all users in both markets by the end of January. You may be asking, didn't Spotify already introduce AI playlist tools? You'd be right; they were first revealed in 2024. Spotify says Prompted Playlists are "a new way to put meaningful control of the algorithm directly in your hands, with your ideas, your logic, and your creativity." You set up one of these playlists by entering a written prompt, which Spotify says should be as specific as possible for best results. Spotify uses your listening history and real-time cultural music moments to inform how it picks songs. It can see what you've liked in the past and also knows which songs are featured in the charts or being used regularly on TikTok. Spotify gives an example of building a playlist of songs recently used in hit "competition and reality shows," but only picks tracks that fit the listener's tastes. The AI will then search for tracks that fit both categories and put together the playlist. Other examples include tapping into your Spotify history. For example, a prompt asks the AI to look at "my favorite songs over the years" that have then been sampled in other tracks. Or you could build a playlist of songs you've liked on Spotify but haven't actually listened to. Spotify will include a text box explaining why the AI chose a particular track. It can also automatically update every playlist daily or weekly, depending on the rules set. For example, you could ask Spotify to generate a playlist of your specific music taste that aligns with the modern charts, giving you a weekly update of what's trending around the world, but only in the genres you enjoy listening to. Spotify first introduced this tool in New Zealand in December. It's not clear when the beta for the feature will end, but you should see it appear for you in the next week or so if you live in the US or Canada and subscribe to Premium. To find it, head to Create on Spotify, and you'll see an option called Prompted Playlist with a small beta logo next to it. You'll be able to use this feature before a price hike goes into effect in February, when Premium plans are going from $11.99 to $12.99 per month. It'll also see a $2 price increase for Duo and Family subscriptions, bringing them to $18.99 and $21.99 per month, respectively.

Spotify's new AI-powered playlist generator is surprisingly great
* Spotify's Prompted Playlists has launched in US and Canada -- the feature creates custom AI playlists based on mood, era, genre, and more. * Prompted Playlists can auto-refresh daily or weekly, and each song gets an AI summary explaining why it was selected. * Just before the launch of this new feature, Spotify increased US subscription prices. After launching last month in other regions, Prompted Playlists, a new Spotify feature that allows users to quickly create playlists with the help of AI, is rolling out in the US and Canada. The premium feature lets subscribers create any playlist they can think of, whether the tracks are based on their mood, a mid-2000s emo-focused collection of songs, a bunch of early 1990s rap tracks, or even several genres combined. Prompted Playlists can handle pretty much any parameter you throw at it with conversational prompts. In a recent press release, Spotify offers up an ultra-specific, sort of wild example: "mood-boosting indie-pop for getting ready to go out with friends including songs recently featured on hit competitions and reality shows that fit my taste, along with songs I love but haven't played this year." While this is a pretty funny prompt, you don't really need to be this specific to get a decent playlist. Apple aims to take on Adobe with its new Creator Studio suite The new subscription gives you access to Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, and more for $13 per month. Posts 5 By Patrick O'Rourke If your Spotify playlist feels stale, Prompted Playlists help add variety to the mix As far as in-app AI goes, this is a pretty great use case You can set Playlists created with Prompted Playlists to refresh on a daily or weekly basis, so you won't get bored with listening to the same songs. Each song also includes an AI-generated summary related to why it was added to your playlist. I can see myself using this feature to catch up on tracks from artists I haven't listened to in a few years, or to create specific playlists that better capture my varied taste in music. I tested Prompted Playlists a few times and while it took a couple of minutes to pull together the AI-generated playlist, it worked pretty well and its song selections made sense in the context of my prompts. To find Spotify's Prompted Playlist option, follow these steps: * Open Spotify and tap Create, then select Prompted Playlist. * Next, describe what you want to hear, whether it's a specific era, genre, or mood. * Spotify then generates a playlist from this idea. Spotify's Prompted Playlists feel like a smarter way to discover music - how it works
Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET's key takeaways * Spotify is rolling out a new Prompted Playlist feature. * It'll help you create a playlist by describing the vibe you're looking for. * It is now available in beta for Premium users in the US and Canada. Spotify is making it easier to build your perfect playlist for every occasion. The company is rolling out a new feature called Prompted Playlist, which it says puts "meaningful control of the algorithm directly in your hands, with your ideas, your logic, and your creativity." The feature is available now in beta for Premium users in the US and Canada. The Prompted Playlist feature enables you to describe, via a prompt, what you want to hear, and Spotify takes it from there. The feature uses your description, listening history, and current trends in music and culture to curate the vibe you're looking for. Also: Spotify got another price increase, but I found a cheaper alternative (with the same Premium benefits) The new Spotify feature allows you to create playlists with a refresh to your Discovery Weekly, discover fresher tracks and emerging artists, and include or exclude specific genres according to your taste. A Prompted Playlist can be set to refresh daily or weekly, so your playlist always has new music. How to use Spotify Prompted Playlist The new Prompted Playlist feature can be found inside the Create menu: * Open Spotify and tap Create in the lower-right corner. * Tap on Prompted Playlist. * Describe what you want to hear. You can go for a specific vibe, scenario, or mood. This prompt can be edited or deleted to start afresh. * You can also tap on Ideas to find example prompts created by Spotify's music editors and culture experts. * Once created, you can share this Prompted Playlist with your friends and family. The music streaming service shared a few prompts like, "A Discover Weekly-style playlist, but only hip hop from the last 30 days," and "What are the first tracks I ever listened to on Spotify? Order them from the very first track I ever streamed -- with date and time -- and keep going." Also: Spotify cracks down on AI 'slop' - these are the changes you'll see I like to listen to a particular kind of music depending on what I'm doing, and Prompted Playlist sounds like a fun capability that I want to try. I'd love to discover more Bollywood dance tunes for an upcoming wedding. I'd also like to make a playlist of soothing music to help me fall asleep quickly. If the feature works as stated, I might finally use an AI-enabled tool on a day-to-day basis.

Spotify's Prompted Playlist lets you describe exactly what you want to hear
Ahead of its upcoming price hike, Spotify is rolling out a more advanced AI playlist feature in the US and Canada. Prompted Playlist, which the company trialed in New Zealand late last year, lets subscribers "control the Spotify algorithm," as the company describes it. "You're not just asking for music, you're shaping how Spotify goes about discovering it for you." For example, you can guide it to make a playlist of songs you've saved to your Library but haven't listened to yet. (It can tap into your entire Spotify history.) Or, you can tell it to round up songs from a specific television show or movie. (It uses real-time information about pop culture, charts, and history.) The feature includes options to refresh the playlist over time (daily or weekly). You can edit each playlist's prompt at any time. Each track will include a short note to explain why it was chosen. Spotify says beta testers have used Prompted Playlist to revisit songs tied to specific moments and filter out tracks they've overplayed lately. "Others are asking for long, lyric-free electronic playlists to power through a workday, or mixing in artists connected to current pop culture moments and viral trends," the company wrote. There's room for some confusion here because Spotify already has an "AI Playlist" feature. That simpler type will stick around alongside the new "Prompted" variety, which allows for finer tuning and can sift through more data. Prompted Playlist will be available to Spotify Premium subscribers in the US and Canada "by the end of the month." Once you have access, you can try it by tapping Create, then selecting Prompted Playlist.

Spotify's new playlist generator lets you add your vibes, feelings or memories
Spotify is adding more vibes. The music streamer on Thursday rolled out 'prompted playlist,' an artificial intelligence-driven feature that allows users to tap into a feeling or memory in order to build a custom mix. "We hear from listeners all the time that they love playlists, but making their own can feel daunting," Spotify's global head of editorial, Sulinna Ong, said in a statement announcing the news. The feature is now available in beta to premium subscribers in the U.S. and Canada and will roll out through the end of the month. The company began testing it in December 2025 in New Zealand. The playlists can be curated to activities, like "high-energy pop and hip-hop for a 30-minute 5K run that keeps a steady pace before easing into relaxing songs for a cool-down," with further prompts to include specific artists or time periods, according to the release. The Swedish streaming platform's editors created sample prompts, found under an 'ideas' tab. Unlike the prior feature AI playlist, prompted playlists can be scheduled to refresh daily or weekly, with a description for each song recommendation. Last week, Spotify announced a price increase for premium subscription in the U.S. Starting in February, the subscription price will hike to $12.99 per month, up from $11.99. In December, the platform made music videos available to premium subscribers in the U.S. and Canada.

Spotify is letting you control the algorithm with new Prompted Playlists
It's common knowledge that many apps use algorithms these days. However, years before "For You" timelines, Spotify subscribers were already complaining about the algorithm. Well, the music service is finally giving you the keys to its recommendation engine with Prompted Playlists. There are a few things that make Prompted Playlists significantly different -- and significantly better -- than Spotify's previous AI-generated playlists. When creating a Prompted Playlist, you can instruct Spotify to look into your listening history and regularly refresh the playlist -- just like Daily Mixes and Discover Weekly. As you would expect, you can do typical AI prompts like, "mood-boosting indie-pop for getting ready to go out with friends," but that's not really new. It gets much more interesting when you append it with something like, "that fit my taste" or "and songs I love but haven't played this year." That ability to look into your personal stats is what makes Prompted Playlists powerful, and there's more. Let's say you're not happy with your Discover Weekly playlist (which also recently received a big update). You could ask Spotify to find an artist you've only heard one or two songs from and generate a playlist of songs to "introduce" you to them. Then you could have that playlist update every week on the day of your choosing. This is how you can essentially make your own Daily Mixes or Discover Weekly. Another cool thing about Prompted Playlists is that they act essentially just like any other playlist. You can share them with friends and make them public for everyone else to see. Finding unique playlists from the community has always been a great feature of Spotify, and Prompted Playlists should make it even more fun. The one downside is that you need to have a newly-more-expensive Premium subscription in the U.S. or Canada to play with Prompted Playlists. Just tap the "Create" button in the bottom toolbar and select the "Prompted Playlist" option to start typing. After you've generated a playlist, you'll see short explanations under every song about how it fits your specific prompt. Spotify is also putting example prompts on the Home screen to give you an idea of how it works. Subscribe for deeper Spotify insights in our newsletter Want hands-on Prompted Playlist guidance? Spotify expands Prompted Playlist beta to the U.S. and Canada
The feature combines the user's listening history with real-time world data to create smart playlists based on natural-language prompts. Here are the details. Prompted Playlist adds to current AI-based features, like AI Playlist Last month, Spotify announced Prompted Playlist, a beta feature available only to Premium Listeners in New Zealand. From the announcement: Prompted Playlist lets you describe exactly what you want to hear and set the rules for your personalized playlist. And unlike anything before it, this feature taps into your entire Spotify listening history, all the way back to day one. Each playlist reflects not only what you love today, but the full arc of your taste. Spotify then curates and keeps it fresh based on your listening patterns and world knowledge. Today, the feature begins rolling out to Premium subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. With Prompted Playlist, users can set the playlist to refresh daily or weekly. Once the playlist is created, they can either edit their original prompt or start from scratch if they don't like the result. Each track included in the playlist comes with "descriptions and context that tell you the story behind the recommendation," which Spotify says helps make the experience feel more dynamic and personalized. Here are a few example prompts: * Music from my top artists from the last five years, featuring deep cuts I haven't heard yet. * High-energy pop and hip-hop for a 30-minute 5K run that keeps a steady pace before easing into relaxing songs for a cool-down. Include music from this year's biggest films and most-talked-about TV shows that match my taste. * Mood-boosting indie-pop for getting ready to go out with friends, including songs recently featured on hit competition and reality shows that fit my taste, along with songs I love but haven't played this year. * Warm acoustic songs for a slow Sunday morning, plus hidden gems and covers from singer-songwriters trending globally right now. * Songs that feel like my early-2000s college years mixed with upbeat tracks from the TV shows, movies, and pop culture moments that defined that decade. Once the user taps "Generate playlist," Spotify will analyze trends, charts, culture, and history, as well as the user's listening habits from day one, and will come up with the result. To help users get acquainted with the feature and its possibilities, Spotify will start showing example prompts "created by Spotify's music editors and culture experts" on the platform's Home screen. The company says, "they've designed a mix of playful prompts that generate personalized playlist ideas you can easily customize." But didn't this already exist? Not exactly. In late 2024, Spotify announced AI Playlist, a feature that lets users generate playlists by typing a prompt. Prompted Playlist, however, goes a step further: it factors in real-time information, plus the user's own listening history, and allows them to control whether (and when) the playlist should be updated. Here's how to use Prompted Playlist Spotify says it will keep listening to user feedback to improve Prompted Playlist before rolling it out to more broadly.

Spotify brings AI-powered 'Prompted Playlists' to US and Canada - how to use it [Gallery]
Following a limited rollout last year, Spotify is bringing its AI-powered "Prompted Playlists" to listeners in the US and Canada. The idea behind Prompted Playlists, Spotify says, is to give you some control over the music discovery process. This works by letting you explain your ideal playlist to Spotify, with AI being used to parse that prompt and create a custom playlist that you can tune to what you're looking for. Spotify says: We believe that technology is only as good as the humans behind it. That's why we created Prompted Playlist, which lets you describe exactly what you want to listen to using your own words, then generates a playlist informed by your listening history and what's happening in music right now. It's a new way to put meaningful control of the algorithm directly in your hands, with your ideas, your logic, and your creativity. Think of it more as collaboration, not automation: You set the rules, and Spotify works from there. As of today, Spotify is rolling out Prompted Playlists to Premium subscribers in the United States and Canada, though it remains in beta for the time being. Spotify also explains that you'll be able to refresh these playlists at any time, even automating daily or weekly refreshes to keep things feeling new. The app will also show "example prompts" on the home page as created by "Spotify's music editors and culture experts." As far as accessing the feature goes, it's available through the "Create" menu in Spotify. Prompted Playlists in Spotify can also be shared with other users once they've been created. A few examples shared by Spotify include:

Spotify's Prompted Playlist lets you micromanage your own algorithm
For years, Spotify's recommendation engine has felt like a mind reader. It quietly tracks what you play, skip, save, and replay, then serves up Discover Weekly, Release Radar, and an endless stream of algorithmically generated playlists designed to know your taste better than you know it yourself. With its new feature, Prompted Playlist, Spotify is experimenting with a different idea: What if users didn't just receive recommendations, but actively shaped them? Prompted Playlist, now launching for Spotify users in the U.S., is a new way to create playlists using personalized prompts, allowing listeners to guide Spotify's algorithm with greater intent and context. Instead of starting with a blank playlist or relying entirely on automated suggestions, users can describe what they want and let Spotify build from there. It's a subtle shift, but one built around the idea of less passive consumption and more collaboration. How Spotify's Prompted Playlist works At its core, Prompted Playlist lets users generate playlists by entering a written prompt -- anything from a mood or activity to a more imaginative musical direction. Think: "moody indie tracks for a rainy Sunday," "upbeat pop for a post-work walk," or even, "What would my listening look like if I were raised in Argentina?" What sets the feature apart is what happens behind the scenes. Prompted Playlist draws from a user's entire Spotify listening history, not just recent habits or popular tracks, pulling in years of data -- from teenage emo phases to current hyperpop obsessions -- to shape something that feels as personal and maleable as your own tastes. Users can also choose to refresh playlists daily or weekly, allowing them to evolve over time as new music is released, trends shift, and listening habits change, rather than going stale after a few plays. How is Promptd Playlist any different than Spotify's AI Playlist feature? At first glance, Prompted Playlist may sound similar to Spotify's existing AI Playlist, which also lets users generate playlists with written prompts. But the two features are built for different kinds of listening and different relationships with the algorithm. AI Playlist is largely about instant creation, whereas Prompted Playlist is designed to evolve over time. According to Spotify, Prompted Playlist draws not only on prompt-based input but also on world knowledge, cultural relevance, and the full depth of a listener's platform history. In practice, that means the system matches keywords and interprets context. When I asked Prompted Playlist to create a reading playlist to accompany This Fatal Kiss by Alicia Jasinska, I specified that I wanted something mystical and soft, serene, with elements of Slavic folklore. As the playlist generated, Spotify surfaced its process in real-time, displaying notes like "analyzing cultural motifs" and "filtering for instrumental sound." The result was a playlist titled "Slavic Folklore Reading Mix" that leaned heavily on atmospheric, instrumental tracks, alongside classical selections like Tchaikovsky's "Mélodie, Op. 42 No. 3." The emphasis on texture over lyrics made it well-suited for reading, while the Eastern European influences suggested the system was interpreting cultural tone. Prompted Playlist's access to a listener's full platform history also opens the door to more personalized experiments. When I asked it to generate a playlist featuring the first 25 songs I ever listened to on Spotify, arranged in chronological order, it did exactly that, pulling from my own listening data. (For the record, the first song I ever played on my account on Sept. 12, 2011, was Cher Lloyd's "Swagger Jagger," which feels, in retrospect, deeply on brand.) How do I make a Prompted Playlist on Spotify? In the Spotify app, users can start by navigating to the Create Playlist option, where Prompted Playlist will appear as a new choice. From there, Spotify asks for a written prompt describing what you're looking for -- whether that's a mood, activity, aesthetic, or specific listening context. Once the prompt is submitted, Spotify generates a playlist in real-time, showing brief notes about how it's interpreting your request. After the playlist is created, users can choose to schedule automatic refreshes, setting it to update daily or weekly so the playlist continues to evolve with new music and changing tastes. The playlist can also be edited like any other Spotify playlist: tracks can be removed, reordered, or saved, and those interactions help fine-tune future updates.

I've been trying out Spotify's new Prompted Playlist tool, and it could be a smash hit if the platform tweaks these minor issues
Back in December, Spotify launched one of its most powerful playlist creators yet: Prompted Playlists. it was initially made available in beta to Premium members in New Zealand, and following a successful trial run, it's finally expanding to the US and Canada. Building on Spotify's AI playlist tool, which launched in April 2024, Prompted Playlists takes a similar approach but gives you full control over where you steer the algorithm. In its news blog, Spotify puts it quite simply: "You're not just asking for music, you're shaping how Spotify goes about discovering it for you." Using prompts, big or small, you can tell it exactly what you want to hear and it will generate a unique playlist - but there are a few twists. The most notable difference with Prompted Playlists is that, just like Discover Weekly, it updates every so often, and you get to decide when it does. In addition to fresh music recommendations, Prompted Playlists also offers context behind each song with a new Notes function - another selling point for the new tool. Though Spotify has plans to roll Prompted Playlists out to more markets, it's starting with the US and Canada for the first stage of expansion. I've been experimenting with Prompted Playlists for a few days, and while I'm enjoying what it has to offer, it's still in its infancy with a lot of room for growth - but I see that as a good thing. Recreate Discover Weekly, but make it better Going into Prompted Playlists, my idea was to create a new way to discover new songs, artists, and genres. I use features like Discover Weekly and Spotify's own All New All Now playlist, so I wanted something more tailored. For starters, each Prompted Playlist takes around two minutes to generate, which is a bit of a wait, but expected for a feature in its early days. That's the first area for future improvement. Then it was time to really dive in, and I kicked things off with the following prompt: 'Add songs that have been released in the last week from artists I've been enjoying recently. It should be similar to the All New All Now playlist, with new tracks from recommended artists.' For a first go, it was quite satisfactory, with a handful of fresh bangers from the past week, albeit a little shorter than my usual playlists (each Prompted Playlist lasts around 60-90 minutes). But it took some tinkering to get it where I exactly wanted it to be. One of the faults I couldn't shake was the range of artists the playlist recommended, Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen being two of them. I know that I've never streamed those two artists, nor do I listen to artists of a similar type, so the playlist had no reason to recommend them. After removing them from my Spotify ecosystem, I updated the playlist to see what else it would give me, but ran into a prompt error (see below). Though you can be hyper-detailed and specific with your prompt, you need to give it a time span that's wide enough for it to gather recommendations from. When I updated it with a more nuanced prompt, things started looking brighter: 'Add songs that have been released in the last two weeks from artists that I enjoy as well as ones you'd think I'd like. It should span genres similar to the All New All Now playlist, with new releases from recommended artists based on my recent listening habits for added music discovery'. After some refining, the final playlist turned out to be just what I was after: a collection of fresh music releases from an even blend of familiar and new artists, which I've since included in my weekly music streaming regimen. Now, every Friday I get to wake up to an updated playlist of new music drops tailored to my requests - but I'm not leaving All New All Now and Discover Weekly behind. A few minor issues, but a solid starting point Not every new feature has a perfect landing, including Prompted Playlists. In spite of the tool's clever functions, there's still room for improvement, and Spotify should start with speeding up the time it takes to put a Prompted Playlist together. Another small tweak that would make Prompted Playlists unstoppable is increasing the amount of songs it suggests - I reckon a roughly three-hour playlist is reasonable, similar to Daylists. There's also the matter of recommending artists that don't match my listening habits which Spotify could also work on, however this can also be tackled by entering hyper-specific prompts so that Spotify understands exactly what it is you want to hear. Unlike other Spotify features that I've used and immediately abandoned, the Prompted Playlists tool has made a fair impression on me, giving me a new means of fresh music discovery, but one that caters to my personal taste profile . With some tweaks here and there, I can see it becoming quite the hotspot in my Spotify ecosystem. You can now try Spotify's Prompted Playlist feature in the US and Canada
Create playlists tailored to your vibe or a specific mood using simple text prompts. Spotify started testing a new AI-powered feature late last year that lets users create personalized playlists using text prompts. The Prompted Playlist feature was initially rolled out in beta to Spotify Premium subscribers in New Zealand. Now, it's making its way to users in the US and Canada. For those who missed the original announcement, the Prompted Playlist feature goes beyond the basic AI playlist creation option Spotify debuted back in 2024. It supports more complex prompts, allows users to refine generated playlists with follow-up inputs, and factors in listening history when creating playlists. Spotify explains that the feature generates playlists using "real-time information about the world of music, including trends, charts, culture, and history," along with the user's entire listening history dating back to when they first joined the platform. Users can also choose to have the generated playlist update automatically on a daily or weekly basis to keep the recommendations fresh. Each track in the playlist will be accompanied by a short description explaining why it was included. Create your first Prompted Playlist Users in the US and Canada can now give the feature a go by opening the "Create" menu in Spotify, selecting the new "Prompted Playlist" option, and entering a prompt. To help users get started, Spotify will surface sample prompts on the home screen created by the company's music editors and culture experts. Alternatively, users can select the "Ideas" option for inspiration. Users can also share generated playlists with friends, and Spotify will "tune it to their taste so everyone gets their own personalized version." Recommended Videos The Prompted Playlist feature is still in beta and is limited to Spotify Premium subscribers in the US and Canada. It's rolling out gradually starting today, and will reach all users by the end of the month. Spotify notes that "some aspects may evolve, with usage limits in place while we test and learn," adding that the experience will continue to evolve based on user feedback.

Spotify's 'Prompted Playlist' Feature Is Finally Coming to the US
These playlists take your entire Spotify listening history into account, as well. Last month, Spotify announced "Prompted Playlist," a new feature the company claimed let users "steer the algorithm." This was a bold -- if not vague -- claim, to be sure, but it was backed by everyone's favorite tech trend of the last three years: AI. The pitch was that Spotify would let subscribers use the company's AI models to better control their listening experience, so long as they lived in the country of New Zealand. That's a very small slice of Spotify's very large user base. Luckily for those of us in the United States and Canada, Prompted Playlist is expanding to our side of North America. Spotify announced the move today, Jan. 21: Now, Premium subscribers in any of these three countries can access the feature, if they want to hand over the playlist reigns to Spotify's machine learning models. What is Prompted Playlist? Prompted Playlist is Spotify's AI-powered tool that lets you use natural language to create custom playlists. The idea is, rather than look for songs to add to a playlist, you tell Spotify's AI what you're in the mood to listen to, and it adds songs automatically for you. That can include genres and existing songs, but also ideas, deeper descriptions, and, for lack of a better word, vibes. To understand what I mean, here are some of the suggested prompts Spotify suggests you try: * "Make me a playlist of songs I've saved to my Library (playlists or Liked Songs) that I either haven't played yet or have only listened to once. The goal is to round up those songs I found, saved, and then totally forgot to revisit. Give me a chance to finally hear what I've been missing." * "What are the first tracks I ever listened to on Spotify? Order them by the very first track I ever streamed - with date and time - and keep going." * "Knowing what I listen to today, make me a playlist of songs from 2016 that match my current taste, mixing the biggest tracks from that year with songs that feel timeless now." * "Make me a playlist to help me learn Spanish, with clear vocals and easy-to-follow lyrics. Mix popular Spanish-language songs with slower tracks that make it easier to catch the words, and include music that reflects different Spanish-speaking cultures to keep it engaging." Spotify says that Prompted Playlist takes your existing listening history into account as well. While you and a friend might give Spotify's AI the same prompt, in theory, you should each receive different playlists, since the AI will make adjustments based on the music you like and don't like. You also don't have to wonder why the AI put a specific song in the playlist: Each track starts with a "quick one-liner" that explains why Spotify chose it in the first place. I could see that being either insightful, or extremely annoying. The thing is, Spotify has rolled out a feature like this before, appropriately dubbed "AI Playlist." Lifehacker's David Nield covered it in September of 2024, and catching up on that feature, it sounds pretty similar to Prompted Playlist. AI Playlist isn't actually going away now that Prompted Playlist is here: Spotify tells me that these are two separate features, and that the major differences are that Prompted Playlist factors in your entire Spotify listening history, going back to your first song, as well as real-time information about "trends, charts, culture, and history" in the industry today. You can also schedule playlists if you like, so the mix refreshes every day or week, something you can't do with AI Playlist. From my seat, it also seems like Prompted Playlist is designed to handle more complex prompts, as well. While the company advertised AI Playlist as a way to build playlists from prompts like "upbeat pop music for my road trip," the company's suggested Prompted Playlist prompts are much more intricate, and include multiple levels of instruction for the AI. Perhaps part of that is the result of improvements in the technology over the past year and half. How to try Spotify's Prompted Playlist Prompted Playlist is launching as a Premium-only feature, so if you don't pay for Spotify, you unfortunately can't access it. If you do have a Premium account, you'll need to head to Spotify, tap "Create," then choose "Prompted Playlist." As explained above, from here, you can describe what kind of playlist you want the tool to make. From here, you'll be able to set how often it refreshes (if it refreshes at all). If you're not happy with the results, you can choose "Edit Prompt" to adjust it. You can share the playlist with friends, but know that Spotify will adjust the playlist to match their listening histories instead.

Spotify launches AI-powered Prompted Playlists
Spotify has launched Prompted Playlists, an AI-powered playlist creation tool, for Premium subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. The feature, initially tested in New Zealand, enables users to generate playlists by verbally describing their desired listening experience. Prompted Playlists expands upon an earlier AI playlist product introduced in 2024, which accepted simpler prompts regarding mood or genre. The new iteration allows for more conversational and detailed user input. A demonstration cited by Spotify illustrated a complex prompt: "Find me one artist I haven't listened to yet, but would probably love, or an artist I've only heard one or two songs from, and introduce me to them. Build a playlist of songs that'll give me an overview of their catalog so it feels like I'm getting to know them. Put the songs you think I'll like the most in the top five spots." J.J. Italiano, Spotify's Head of Global Music Curation and Discovery, said the feature aims to broaden playlist accessibility, stating, "For most people, isn't a part of their job. You don't always have the time or the energy to keep building the perfect playlist every time your mood changes, and that's where prompted playlists will come in." Italiano's team manages playlists including Today's Top Hits and New Music Friday. He added, "This gives listeners access to that creative process without needing to know genres, or years, or industry language. You don't need the right words. You just need your words." Italiano concluded, "If you can describe a feeling, you can make a playlist." The AI, Spotify stated, analyzes global music trends, charts, culture, and history in real time, alongside a user's complete listening history on the platform. While playlists are personalized by default, users can instruct the AI to exclude their listening history, promoting discovery of new music, or generate playlists based on non-musical concepts like weather or TV shows. Prompt sharing could foster a new type of creator focused on developing AI prompts. Each user's generated playlist would remain unique due to personalization based on individual tastes and listening history, with options for further modification. Spotify describes Prompted Playlists as the "next evolution" of its prior AI playlist feature, offering enhanced real-time trend understanding, comprehensive analysis of user listening behavior, and greater control. Both the new and older AI playlist features will coexist, which may cause consumer confusion. The beta feature currently has usage limits and is available only in English. Spotify did not specify a global rollout timeline, stating it will use initial market learnings to inform future launches.

Spotify Launches AI-Driven 'Prompted Playlist' for Premium Users in US, Canada
Jan 22 (Reuters) - Spotify on Thursday rolled out "prompted playlist", an artificial intelligence-powered feature in the United States and Canada that allows premium users tailor playlists using their listening habits and commands. After its successful run in New Zealand, the expansion is the latest in a series of AI-powered updates on the Swedish streaming platform as it looks to attract more users to its subscription plans from the free tier. "Listeners don't just want Spotify to understand them. They want to actively shape their own experience," Vice President Of Product Personalization Molly Holder said in a media briefing. Spotify said the new feature would position users as active participants who direct the algorithm using their own words and intentions, rather than being passive recipients of suggestions provided by the streaming platform. Unlike previous features such as AI playlist, prompted playlist will enable users to set "rules" for the generated content and can be scheduled to refresh daily or weekly, ensuring the music remains current, the company said. The move follows Spotify's announcement earlier this month to increase price of its monthly premium subscription plan by $1 to $12.99 in the United States, Estonia and Latvia markets beginning February. Spotify's new playlist tool might be its best yet
* Prompted Playlist lets you craft highly specific playlists by probing your Spotify listening history. * Use nuanced prompts - dates, plays, themes - to get personalized playlists with helpful notes. * Rolling out to US/Canada in beta; UK/EU rollout TBD. What's the one thing you've always wanted to do on Spotify? That's right: you want greater access to your Spotify algorithm to prod and poke and make new playlists, scoop out nostalgic bangers, and infuse them with your favorite track from last year. Okay, so maybe that's not what you've always dreamed about doing on Spotify, but Prompted Playlist is a huge step toward giving us much more control over how we experience music on Spotify. And while Prompted Playlist is still a beta feature under active development, it's clear this will be a game-changer for making personal playlists on the world's most popular streaming service -- and I've already given it a try. I'm all in on Spotify's upgraded AI playlists Prompted Playlist isn't replacing AI Playlist At the end of 2025, Spotify started testing a new AI-powered playlist feature in New Zealand: Prompted Playlist. On the face of it, Prompted Playlist sounds conceptually similar to Spotify's existing AI playlist tool, the aptly named AI Playlist. Indeed, when Spotify revealed its new AI tool to me -- before I knew all the details -- I struggled to envisage how this was different. But functionally, Prompted Playlist is effectively the evolution of the original tool, turning it from a basic AI playlist creator into a more powerful prompting platform that can interact with your Spotify algorithm, understanding complex requests, and ultimately giving you more control. So, instead of simply asking the AI Playlist "create a playlist with techno tracks I listened to last year" and getting a list of 30 tracks, you can be much more specific; "give me a playlist with techno tracks i listened to last year but don't include anything with more than three plays, and make it only British artists," you get a proper playlist specificly matching that input. Now, that's quite niche, obviously, but it shows how specific you can be with Prompted Playlist versus AI Playlist, tapping directly into your Spotify algo like never before. Interestingly, Spotify confirmed to me that Prompted Playlist isn't replacing the original AI Playlist tool. The two AI playlist creation tools will live alongside each other, with the original seen as a quicker way to make playlists on the go and Prompted Playlist more as an advanced, more detail-oriented option. It's a beta mode, but it's still great fun to see what you can make You can really tap into your listening history As said, Prompted Playlist is more akin to prompting ChatGPT than just asking for 30 tracks for a summertime jam. You can get quite experimental with it, and I'm absolutely certain people are going to find ways to push Prompted Playlist into strange new areas. I started with some basic prompts, such as "Bring back songs I used to love but haven't played this year," but realised prompting like this is almost too basic. So, instead, I prompted "Create a playlist featuring my top 3 songs from each year I've been a Spotify subscriber," and I have to say, this was a nice little look back into my musical history on the platform (and a surprising number of tracks I still listen to daily). The small notes Prompted Playlist adds are also a nice touch, and on some playlists that use more descriptive or narrative styles, help you understand what Spotify envisaged. Case in point, I asked Prompted Playlist to make a "a playlist that captures the feeling of a really good English cooked breakfast, with perfect poached eggs, black pudding, hash browns, and everything else, served on a warm plate with buttered toast." I wasn't overly impressed with the playlist, but the notes for each track explained reasoning such as "Warm, lightly toasted acoustics open the menu," and "Slow comfort food rock, savory as black pudding." How about a playlist that represents MakeUseOf, where every track name starts with one of the letters of the website name? Prompted Playlist duly complied and delivered a 50-track experience with each letter in order. Or a playlist exploring the music I listened to on April 25, 2024? Again, delivered in order, apparently with the specific times I listened to the tracks on that date, which is remarkable. This is just the tip of the iceberg for Prompted Playlist. Spotify also lists a decent range of prompts to get you started, too. They're surprisingly handy to show you the range of what Prompted Playlist can do, such as find trending songs on TikTok for the week, pull in songs mentioned in the top podcasts, and so on. Being an AI tool, I also tried to push Prompted Playlist for other responses. Could it whip up 500 words on Spotify's use of AI across its platforms? Can it be prompted to drop a brownie recipe? Unfortunately, no. It also can't grab data from your friends either (similar to Spotify Blend) and make a playlist, though I wonder if that might come at a later date (that said, I can see how problematic that could be depending on scope). There was the curious viral moment of The Velvet Sundown, a completely AI band that rose to the top of Spotify's streaming charts, reminding us that it won't be long until AI and real artists will compete full-time for our attention. Then there are features like Spotify's AI DJ that no other music service can compete with, serving up a constant stream of hits, new songs, past favorites, and so on. I like that Prompted Playlist brings much more direct engagement with your algorithm, something Spotify subscribers have dreamed about for a long time. Now that it's here, people are going to have a lot of fun figuring out just how far you can prompt Spotify. Ultimately, you're still limited by its music and playlists (and as Prompted Playlist is currently in beta, actual limitations to playlist lengths), but that doesn't mean you can push and probe to see what happens. Spotify is rolling out its new Prompted Playlist feature to Premium subscribers in the US and Canada by the end of the month, and folks in New Zealand will retain access. However, according to Spotify, there is no specific timeframe for the UK and EU rollout at the time of writing.

Spotify rolls out an AI feature that generates playlists from emotions and memories
On Thursday Spotify unveiled its "prompted playlist" tool, a new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered feature that lets premium subscribers create personalized playlists based on emotions, memories or activities. Currently available in beta in the US and Canada, the feature will be rolled out gradually by the end of the month. It was first tested in New Zealand in December 2025. The tool enables users to submit a wide range of ideas - such as a mood, a specific vibe or a life moment - to automatically generate a tailored music selection. Users can also specify artists or musical eras to refine the results. Spotify offers, as an example, an energetic 30-minute playlist for a run, followed by calmer tracks for recovery. The tool differs from previous attempts by offering programmable updates and brief descriptions accompanying each track, to provide context for their inclusion in the selection. At the same time, the platform is enhancing the user experience with a new "ideas" tab featuring themes suggested by editorial teams. The launch is part of a broader innovation strategy as Spotify adjusts its business model: from February, the monthly price of its premium subscription will rise from $11.99 to $12.99 in the United States. In December, the platform also added music video playback for North American subscribers, underscoring its push to make its services more attractive amid increasingly fierce competition.
