Why some Spotify users were let down by this year's Wrapped: 'Definitely missing something'
A general view of Spotify's 2024 Wrapped event on Dec. 4, 2024 in London, England. Dave Benett / Getty Images TikTok creators Jessica Hong and Sandra Sanchez both used those words in the captions for their videos discussing their opinions on 2024 Spotify Wrapped and its use of generative AI to create a sense of personalization. Spotify Wrapped synthesizes users' annual listening habits into engaging and shareable content. Each year offers a slightly different spin, like 2021's "audio aura," which paired users' year in listening with color palates, and 2023's "sound town," which told users locations where listeners had similar tastes to theirs. For some Spotify users, the changes to this year's Wrapped stirred controversy and dampened their excitement. Here's why. The main function of Spotify Wrapped -- independent of the new features that Spotify adds to Wrapped every year -- is to show users their top artists and songs. This year, many swear that these stats just looked ... wrong. "I know for a fact that I did not listen to those songs when they said I did bc I didn't know they existed at that time," wrote X user @luouxyo. "My top songs, my numbers -- I don't think they're accurate," TikToker @survivorswiftie said in a video about why this year's Wrapped felt different. TikTok content creator and small business social media manager Jessica Hong, @smallboba on TikTok, tells TODAY.com that although Spotify recognized artists she had on repeat, she did not feel like they plucked her true favorites. "(Wrapped) didn't really connect me to the community that it did in past years. And it just felt like it was definitely missing something," Hong says. For another perspective on her year in listening, Hong took to stats.fm, a third party platform offering insights into users' Spotify stats. This app, which has stats available year-round, showed her an entirely different set of songs and artists than her Wrapped did. "I know my top artist -- in my heart -- is always BTS. Spotify Wrapped said (it was) Still Woozy, but when I used stats.fm, it said BTS, so I'm like, 'What's the truth?'" she says. Content creator Joël Edelmann on TikTok offered up a theory when reflecting on his own list. "I think Spotify prioritizes big names, because I listen to a lot of smaller ones, and they don't show up here," he said in a video. Spotify has not shared how it tracks listening statistics or the metrics it uses to lead to Wrapped. TODAY.com has reached out to Spotify for comment. An article on the website says the creation of its annual roundup is "truly art and science working side by side." Beyond the confusion that users felt when Wrapped presented them with their listening metrics, many were wary of new features that incorporated artificial intelligence. Spotify presented 2024 highlights to users via their "AI DJ" feature, first introduced to the platform in February 2023, and also offered a "Wrapped AI Podcast." This podcast is a collaboration between Spotify and Google NotebookLM, an AI-powered tool meant for summarizing documents and data. The result is a unique armchair discussion between two voices that sound uncannily human for every individual Spotify user, discussing their own year of listening. TikTok users posted videos of themselves getting seemingly roasted by their AI podcast hosts -- like when one AI voice asked, "What were you going through?" "She didn't have to drag me like that," TikToker @commagray commented. Others zeroed in on moments when the AI podcast hosts didn't have the tact human podcasters would. TikToker @babbity.kate shared a clip of her AI podcast hosts remarking on a day she listened to seven hours of music. "Let's not forget September 11th. Looks like you had a pretty epic day," one AI voice mused in her podcast. The other voice responded, "What was the occasion?" Content creator Sandra Sanchez, @lavenderxhive on TikTok, tells TODAY.com she felt this year's Wrapped fell short of doing what she says Spotify Wrapped normally does so well, in part because of the AI feature. "The reason Spotify Wrapped has always been so exciting is we get to learn about ourselves and our music taste," Sanchez says. "This year, I felt like I didn't learn anything. With the use of AI, it felt like a lack of personality and joy. It just felt like word salad." René Sultan, a machine learning engineer who worked on Spotify's AI for Content Safety initiative throughout summer 2024, shares insight into the creation of the podcast. "The personalization department leverages generative AI to create really personalized, tailored experiences for the user. They use cutting-edge technologies internally like GoogleLM and OpenAI to do this," Sultan says. Despite criticism of the execution, Sultan thinks Spotify's use of AI remains consistent with the goal of Wrapped and sets Spotify apart. "They are working within their ethos to use AI to connect more with the user. A lot of the time, AI gets used to automate some human processes, but they're kind of doing the opposite: using AI to connect their users," he says.

Spotify faces numerous criticisms for a "disappointing" Wrapped - Softonic
The moment Spotify users have been eagerly awaiting has arrived: we can finally access our Spotify Wrapped. At this time of year, so close to the end, the platform makes us look back to see which have been the songs we listened to the most during 2024. Over time, the Wrapped has become quite an event, with thousands of users sharing their musical year on social media. However, some have not been too pleased with how this Wrapped was done, even calling it "disappointing". One of the most repeated complaints points out how Spotify has included this year DJ: Wrapped, an AI-powered "personal radio." By selecting this option, you can listen as the artificial voice of Livi, the announcer, reviews your musical year. The truth is that it is not a new feature either: Spotify already added DJ in 2023 and it was a personalized radio that offered the user a music selection based on their tastes. Aside from AI, users have also criticized the lack of more fun interactive elements, such as "personality quizzes." The new "Your Musical Evolution" feature hasn't been well-received either, with many describing it as "strange." Luckily, there are some elements that do repeat, such as the clips of your favorite artists. This novelty was launched in 2023 and since then, it has remained with us these past years. The Wrapped phenomenon has managed to transcend Spotify and jump to other music platforms, such as Apple Music and YouTube Music, which also have their own version.

Spotify users are disappointed by an underwhelming Wrapped this year | TechCrunch
After weeks of anticipation, some Spotify users are left underwhelmed by the streamer's personalized year-in-review feature, Spotify Wrapped -- with many even going so far as to call it "boring" or a "flop." Chief among the complaints are that Spotify prioritized the inclusion of an AI podcast for Wrapped over the other, clever and creative data stories that it typically offers -- like those that identify your music personality, match you to a town that shares your musical tastes, describe your "audio aura," or turn your listening history into a game you can share with friends, among other things. Others are upset over the lack of more detailed stats and the exclusion of information they've come to expect, like top music genres and top podcasts. Spotify declined to clarify how they decided which features to include. On X, a number of people are sharing their feedback alongside the #SpotifyWrapped2024 hashtag, where they're describing this year's annual review of their listening history as "boring," a "flop," "underwhelming," a "disappointment," and more. Although this hasn't stopped people from sharing screenshots of their Wrapped, a scroll through the hashtag currently surfaces more complaints than accolades. For example, one top post calling Wrapped a flop has over 108K likes as of the time of writing. This year, Spotify heavily bet on a partnership with Google to turn users' Wrapped experiences into an AI-powered podcast over the other details and features that have typically made Wrapped so engaging. One Spotify user specifically pointed to the lack of "quirky interactive bits" like the "silly personality assessments," while another noted the new "Your Music Evolution" feature was "quite strange." (The latter had repurposed the niche genres Spotify uses for its personalized daily playlist, Daylist, as a way to describe how users' musical tastes changed throughout the year.) What Spotify users wanted was the same sort of Top Genre information they had in previous years, the complaints indicate. Others found that Wrapped didn't include their Top Podcasts in 2024, but this feature appears to have been offered to some podcast listeners, and not others, posts on X indicate. Spotify says users must have at least two top shows in order for Top Podcasts to be a part of their Wrapped experience. A show is eligible if the user listened for at least 60 seconds of two unique episodes and listened to the show on two different days throughout the year. Others said that they couldn't find their Wrapped 2024 playlist. It does appear in the Wrapped feed in the Spotify app as "Your Top Songs 2024," but your Wrapped interactive experience itself doesn't link to the playlist, which may be why some folks have missed it. The graphics and art design used for Wrapped this year also saw mixed reviews, as some described them as "mid," "really simple," and much worse, though others expressed liking them. The AI podcast also had a mixed reception. Those who hadn't come across Google's NotebookLM before were impressed by the technology, though some expressed a feeling of unease with the feature. Spotify likely hoped users would share their AI podcasts on social video apps like TikTok but, instead, a perusal of the #SpotifyWrapped hashtag on the app shows many complaints about the feature didn't live up to the hype this year, with some suggesting AI was to blame. In addition, a number of users connected their disappointment with Wrapped to Spotify's earlier layoffs, guessing that this year's downgrade had to do with the lack of staffing combined with an overreliance on AI. The company let go of 2,300 people in 2023 which CEO Daniel Ek said had impacted day-to-day operations more than expected. Although a year-end feature, Wrapped is a part of Spotify's day-to-day operations to some extent, as the company told press earlier this week it has already begun work on next year's Wrapped. Teams from across the company contribute to the effort, including marketing, product, music, podcasts, audiobooks, and more. Spotify declined to say how many people work on Wrapped, however. When asked for comment on how it decided what to include in Wrapped this year, Spotify simply said, "Every year we look to bring a new and exciting experience to Wrapped for listeners. It's part of the secret sauce of Wrapped."

Spotify Wrapped 2024 Misses the Mark As Users Voice Their Dissapointment Online
Last year's Spotify Wrapped was a success with everyone cheerfully sharing their personalized recap. Suffice it to say, that the excitement was real this year too. Spotify also stated that this year would be their "best and boldest Wrapped yet," which further fueled the hype train. But, it seems like the train has derailed with the release of Spotify Wrapped 2024, and users are taking to social media to call it a MASSIVE disappointment. This year's Spotify Wrapped arrived a bit late, finally making its way to the Spotify app on December 4. As usual, it starts with your total listening time, number of songs played, and top songs this year. All this is accompanied by flashy and colorful animations and transitions. It showcases listening preferences in specific months, followed by your top artists and a short video from them. There is also one new Wrapped 2024 feature this year, where Spotify users in the U.S., U.K., New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden are greeted by two AI podcast hosts. They will talk users through the highlights of their Spotify Wrapped 2024. This was a result of a partnership between Spotify and Google's NotebookLM, which we covered before the Wrapped dropped! If you have looked at your own Wrapped then you may be left scratching your head wondering where is top genres, the fun trivia about your favorite songs or artists, and why did not have a section for top podcasts. To that, I say that you're not alone. Many people have the same problem with this year's Wrapped, and they took to online spaces to voice their opinions. It was not only the fact the key metrics were completely glossed over but that this year's Wrapped just felt a bit dull and very by the numbers. There were no interesting trivia, facts, or fun takes on their musical preferences. Some users also felt that the animations looked lackluster and speculated whether they were AI-generated. It looks less visually appealing than the previous year's Wrapped and doesn't seem to have any personality to it. They blamed Spotify's layoff of its employees for this poor presentation, while others pointed fingers at the excessive use of AI these days. One user also compared the number of slides of Spotify Wrapped 2023 with this year proving the lack of details that people are complaining about. On the topic of AI, many users were not uncomfortable with their new AI hosts. They found them to be a bit creepy. But a bigger issue was most of Spotify's global audience didn't even get to experience this new AI feature. That's because it was limited to select regions, the one I've mentioned above. The notion is the same whether you visit Spotify's Instagram page, X (Formerly Twitter), or Reddit where users have started a Megathread listing out all the missing features in Spotify Wrapped 2024. I can say for sure that there was a lot of hype for Spotify Wrapped this time around, but I wouldn't fault it for the poor reception. There are some major Spotify stats like genres that are missing here, which third-party tools can tell you about. It also doesn't feel as quirky and fun as last time and my Beebom colleagues share the same sentiment. I do have a daft piece in the works as I publish this, expressing my frustration for the lack of the new AI Wrapped features, and AI features, in general, in the Spotify app in my region. Honestly, I enjoyed the unofficial Netflix Wrapped I covered a few days back more than the official Spotify Wrapped. And now with other music streaming services, like YouTube and Amazon coming up with their own take on Wrapped, Spotify needs to step up their game for next year. But what are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments below.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 was a major letdown for me this year - and I'm not the only music fan who thinks so
When Spotify started teasing its annual music recap, Spotify Wrapped 2024, I, along with music fans around the world, found pleasure in decoding the music streamer's clues online. But when Spotify Wrapped 2024 dropped yesterday (December 4), that excitement evaporated. As one of the best music streaming services, Spotify, you had one job. Since yesterday, music fans have been taking to platforms such as TikTok to express disappointment with Spotify Wrapped 2024's lazy approach to its yearly music roundup. Compared to last year's Wrapped roll-out, this year didn't pack the same innovative features and instead churned out a bunch of AI integrations that, frankly, no one asked for. So, the question remains, what went wrong with Spotify Wrapped 2024? Though it was expected that Wrapped 2024 would have some sort of AI angle, I don't think subscribers were expecting the volume of AI features it gave us. The more interesting integration was the new Wrapped AI Podcast which did give some additional information about your year in music, but even then it was still very surface-level. Instead of telling you your top album and listing your top genres of the year, Spotify decided that revamping its AI DJ feature would be enough to suffice - an integration that I've come to loathe even outside of Wrapped season. But even this didn't offer anything different, packing the exact same functions but instead playing your most-streamed songs of the year. With that said, perhaps 'revamped' is too strong a term. When I compare Spotify Wrapped 2024's features to last year's roundup, there's simply no competition, and this is another thing that music fans have a lot to say about online. One of the biggest shocks was the missed opportunity to bring back the highly successful Sound Town feature - one that I predicted would make a return. Last year, it was one of the most talked about aspects and was the catalyst for all Wrapped-related memes that inundated TikTok and Instagram, so why Spotify didn't hop on this again this year is baffling. Sound Town was just one of the features that peeled back the layers of your music-listening persona, and 'Me in 2023' was the icing on that cake. Conjuring 12 different character-specific cards, this unique astrology-themed feature assigned you one persona that defined your listening habit for the whole year. Spotify did that this time, but only for three months out of the year. When it came to Wrapped's '2024 Music Evolution' section, an evolution it was not. I was given three different 'eras', each with a name mighty similar to the AI-generated Daylists, supposedly tracking my shifting listening behaviors for March, June, and October only. Where's the effort in that, Spotify? But what angered music fans, myself included, was the blatant ignorance on Spotify's part when it came to genre and album statistics. Last year we got the genre sandwich, revealing your top five genres of the year in a groovy visual, but this year the word 'genre' wasn't a part of Spotify's vocabulary. With not even a smidge of data on your top genres and albums which have been integral to the Spotify Wrapped experience for years, the disappointment from music fans is understandable. The be-all and end-all is that Spotify subscribers genuinely care about genres and albums, as they provide the very foundation of any music identity. It would be foolish if Spotify wasn't already examining the online discourse and sheer dissatisfaction of Wrapped 2024 and making immediate notes on how to improve for next year, and although the light-hearted and humorous social media memes work in Spotify's favor for bringing attention to Wrapped, it shouldn't be the determining factor when it comes to designing a 'year in music' roundup. What I hope Spotify learns is that it doesn't have to keep reinventing the wheel and that it's perfectly fine to recycle previous features but with a little twist on them each time. If Sound Town had been brought back for a second year running, it would've immediately become an instant classic for Wrapped features - one that doesn't compromise the personalized aspect of Wrapped. Now that Spotify Wrapped 2024 is behind us, excuse me while I start my Wrapped 2025 tailoring process.

Spotify Wrapped finally enters its flop era
New AI features branded everything from 'lame' to 'spiritually evil'. Over the last decade, Spotify has done an impressive job of making something quite dull - music listening statistics - into an anticipated annual event. Thanks to splashy UI design, amusing copywriting and personalised deep dives, Spotify Wrapped has become part of the festive calendar, and one that's spawned several imitators from rivals such as Apple Music. Spotify Wrapped took its time to arrive this year, but it's finally here - and the company is calling it the "best and boldest Wrapped yet". It's certainly as colourful and eye-catching as ever, but with key statistics missing this time around, some users are underwhelmed by 2024's offering. "This year's Spotify Wrapped design is inspired by the ways pop culture thrives in a beautiful cycle of reinvention, constantly evolving and surprising us," Spotify announced. "Unexpected genres emerge and merge, timeless influences meet fresh ideas, and what once was niche now shapes pop culture. This insight inspired an art direction that loops, transforms, and celebrates the energy of this unique moment in time. Vibrant colour combinations, playful layouts, and lively animations bring the design to life." As well as a bold design, this year's Wrapped includes a couple of new features. 'Your Music Evolution' reveals musical phases that uniquely defined your year, while Your Spotify Wrapped AI Podcast sees AI 'hosts' discuss your year in music. But despite these flashy additions, the core concept of the stats themselves appears to have disappointed some listeners. This year, top genres are missing, despite being included in previous editions (and this year's offerings from rival services), as is the top album a user listened to. With key metrics missing, those AI features aren't proving a particularly welcome addition for some users. Sure, the 'random' patchwork genre names (such as "Heatwave Beach Reggaeton") created by Your Musical Evolution are kind of amusing, but they're no substitute for actual insight. As one X user puts it, "Spotify Wrapped is underwhelming and reeks of AI... there seems to be real lack of effort this year from the boring visuals to the missing genres and quirks". From Adobe to Zoom, we've seen plenty of tech companies alienate users in their vocal embracing of AI in 2024. While Spotify's new Wrapped features might be fun, the response should act as a warning to other brands considering favouring splashy new AI tools over their core offering.

'So LAZY this year': The internet is furious that Spotify Wrapped embraced AI -- and got boring
Before fully immersing yourself in the holiday spirit, there's another yearly tradition to dive into: Spotify Wrapped day. This annual event gives Spotify's 640 million users a chance to celebrate, or cringe at, their music taste with friends, family, and strangers on the internet. Released slightly later than in previous years, many hoped the delay was a sign of some exciting new features. But after everyone's Spotify Wrapped dropped yesterday, excitement quickly turned to disappointment. "That @Spotify wrapped was boring as hell this year. No genres? Just that goofy equivalent to the daylist titles? No location info this year? No artist messages? Boo this man! Boo!" complained one X user. "Spotify wrapped is SO LAZY this year," posted another. "They didn't tell me whether that gay little town in Vermont still matches my music taste." Top of the list of complaints were that the platform focused too much on AI features at the expense of its usual creative and fun elements. Instead of beloved features like music personality quizzes, location-based taste matches, and "audio auras," users were given an AI-generated podcast and a new feature called Your Musical Evolution. Here Wrapped revealed up to three musical phases that defined users' year in music. "June was your Pink Pilates Princess Roller Skating Pop moment," read one post shared on X, while "July was your Coastal Grandmother Fingerstyle Yacht Rock season" read another.

'Cinnamon Softcore Art Deco'? Spotify Wrapped Falls Flat for Some
The Sound Towns of 2023 have been replaced with features such as an A.I.-driven podcast about users' listening habits and word-salad-like genre summaries. For Sydney Brown, the annual release of Spotify Wrapped, the personalized rundown of her music streaming habits, has always been a momentous occasion. "All of my friends say it is like my Super Bowl," said Ms. Brown, 23, who lives in Manhattan. But when she logged on to the streaming platform on Wednesday to see how Spotify would define her musical tastes this year, she found that instead of flashy new features like the Sound Towns of 2023, the offerings were lackluster and felt impersonal. Her Spotify Wrapped, she said, "felt like a homework project that was turned in late." Ms. Brown is part of a vocal cohort of Spotify's 640 million users who typically share their Wrapped results proudly, but this year she and many others found that new features generated by artificial intelligence -- such as a podcast about their listening habits and word-salad-like summaries of their favorite genres -- fell flat. On Reddit, TikTok and Twitter, users posted about their disappointment. A delayed Wrapped built anticipation with little payoff. Spotify Wrapped was released a few days later in 2024 than in previous years, leading many users to believe that exciting new features were in store. Posts and videos on social media described users on the edge of their seats. "I try to be the chill girl but WHERE IS SPOTIFY WRAPPED," one user said on X. "The hype was so loud," said Casey Lewis, who writes the youth trends newsletter "After School," in which she recently included a TikTok with the caption: "The wait for Spotify has driven me to insanity." But the wait did not pay off. When Wrapped arrived on Wednesday, even the most avid lovers of Spotify, like Ms. Brown, were left disappointed. Sign up for For You:A round-up of the best stories personalized to you. In previous years, "there has been a little more effort put into the Spotify Wrapped," Ms. Brown said in an interview. While users were still shown the standard data about their top songs and artists of the year, as well as the number of minutes they listened, Ms. Brown said that some of the niche insights offered in previous years had been done away with. She also questioned the accuracy of users' top songs lists. Some other social media users lamented the loss of information such as a user's top genre for the year, as well as the Sound Towns that sought to geolocate a user's music tastes (Noah Kahan fans, for example, often got Burlington, Vt.). In long Reddit threads, users complained that the presentation was unimaginative. One Reddit user commented that Spotify had taken an extra week "to do less than they ever have." Users' 'musical evolutions' were a word salad. A new feature of Spotify Wrapped this year is Your Musical Evolution, which aims to reveal up to three musical phases that Spotify says "uniquely defined your year." Users received phases with largely confounding names, including "Pink Pilates Princess Roller Skating Pop," "After Hours Football Rap" and "Cinnamon Softcore Art Deco," paired with the artists whose music had inspired those terms. The feature was widely mocked on social media, with one Reddit user commenting that the titles were "random words tossed together." Ms. Lewis said that she believed Spotify was trying to create a "meme-able" moment, as it had done with the release of Sound Towns. But instead, many users grumbled that the genres "made no sense," feeding into a sense that no effort had been made to give the content a human touch. "You can understand why Gen Z was like, This is lame," Ms. Lewis said. The new A.I. podcast left Spotify fans divided. Another new feature is an A.I. podcast customized for each user, helmed by what Spotify calls "two dynamic hosts using generative A.I." to talk through the user's musical preferences. (One editor's podcast includes the insight: "I can just picture those cozy evenings with Springsteen on the record player.") Some found it creative. Cassie Stewart, 21, of Prince Edward Island, who often posts on Booktok, said in an interview that the feature "broke the fourth wall," adding that it was "so fun to listen to because it felt so personal." But other social media users criticized the reliance on A.I. technology, with one Reddit user commenting that it sounded "like the most soulless talk show radio hosts just reusing artist names over and over." Ms. Lewis said that some of the disappointment came from the feeling that this year's Spotify Wrapped was "corporate" and "electronic." "I don't think there is going to be any love lost with Spotify," Ms. Lewis said. But she added that the platform "should rethink their strategy next year and, as much as they can, make it a little bit more curated or a little more thoughtful."

Spotify Wrapped's new feature: A personalized AI podcast
The 2024 edition of the app's year-in-review features Spotify teaming up with Google AI to give users a podcast in which their musical taste is analyzed by bots. Spotify users wait all year for the annual Wrapped feature that summarizes their year in listening, and 2024's edition takes the data drop to a new level with an AI-generated personalized podcast. Spotify teamed up with Google AI's NotebookLM to create the Wrapped AI podcast. Hosted by the NotebookLM bots, your personalized podcast dives into your favorite tracks and artists and explores the evolution of your music taste this year. NotebookLM, one of Google's first experimental AI websites, uses two bots to turn any written material into an engaging conversational podcast via Audio Overview, casually summarizing the information. But like many other AI initiatives, it's not quite perfect yet, Spotify warned. "Keep in mind, our AI hosts may occasionally mispronounce words and don't always provide a comprehensive overview, but we hope you enjoy this first-ever personalized podcast for your year in music," the app said in a news release. First launched in 2015, Spotify Wrapped breaks down the music and podcast listening history of every user's Spotify account, including information about the user's top artists, songs, podcasts and other data. The 12-month recap has become an online phenomenon as users share and compare their results -- and sometimes feel anxiety over what the app will reveal. Wrapped has become known of late for adding new types of user feedback each year. In 2022, Spotify assigned a "listening personality type" to each user based on their listening habits. In 2023, the app assigned "a sound town" locating an area that best resembles the genre of music each user listens to the most. Google partnered with Spotify even though it owns YouTube Music, a rival music streaming service. YouTube Music has recently experimented with own AI feature, called Ask Music, that generates its own AI prompt-based conversational radio. The Spotify Wrapped AI podcast is available only in English for free and premium subscribers in the U.S, U.K, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland and Sweden. The Wrapped AI podcast follows Spotify's recent forays into AI uses, like AI DJ and AI Playlist, which provide AI-made commentary and playlists based on user data. Edward Bilous, the founding director of Juilliard's Center for Creative Technology, says Spotify is always looking for new ways to monetize their data. "I don't think it really has anything to do with music," he said of Spotify Wrapped. "It's not so much about selling records or promoting artists as it is about social preferences and age groups and demographics and other sides of things." Bilous says modern music listening has prioritized the individualized experience, rather than the community experience that used to be prevalent. People more frequently listen to music alone in the car or through headphones rather than in a shared space. "Spotify allows a user to kind of curate a personal image and a personal identity," he said. "Now everybody has a soundtrack to their own lives. That's not something that was really possible before." Wrapped is evidence of just how much personal data the music app is tracking, but users don't seem to mind, said Joe Bennett, a forensic musicologist at Berklee College of Music. "It's a very smart move by Spotify," Bennett said."Rather than being aggrieved in any way that our personal data is being collected, we are sharing it and celebrating it." Bennett, who researches popular music and songwriting, has two twenty-something-year-old daughters who told him they were eagerly anticipating the release of Spotify Wrapped this year. As a music professor, he said, his Spotify algorithm is overloaded with music he listens to for work rather than for fun. "Our music says so much about our personalities," he said. "I think it's very clever in the way it collects data that you're not necessarily collecting yourself in real time. You're not aware in the moment if you're listening to more Taylor Swift than Ed Sheeran, or more Cardi B than Kendrick [Lamar], or whatever." Bennett, 55, said he believes he's "pretty tech literate for a middle-aged person," but that he's still skeptical. The use of an AI podcast to broadly analyze music data can trick the mind into believing this is a legitimate social interaction, he suggested. "It's almost the ultimate echo chamber because you're not going to disagree with any analysis you hear in this podcast," he said. "You're basically just getting a description of your own activity in a fake social interaction beamed back at you."

Spotify Wrapped 2024 controversy explained -- what you need to know
So Spotify Wrapped has come and gone, and we've been given a picture of our musical listening habits in 2024 -- well, those of us with Spotify have, anyway. For better or worse, we now know whether Taylor Swift or George Gershwin has topped our most listened-to artists. We've been told how long we've listened for, we've been shown our favorite tracks, and a playlist has been written in our honor by the great minds at Spotify. Except in some cases, not all of those things have been done accurately. Many users are complaining of hallucinated artists' stats, songs they've never heard appearing in most listened lists, and more. Some users aren't happy with the way that Spotify Wrapped looked this year, complaining that it was boring, and not as creative as previous years. Some miss some of the more personal elements, where they could find out which town they musically matched with. Like a bubbling cauldron filled with a toxic witches brew, Spotify Wrapped 2024 hasn't gone down with users as Spotify might have perhaps hoped. But why? One of the most common complaints seems to be that Spotify Wrapped has misreported on the stats in claims to represent. Now, while this has happened in previous years, this year it seems to be a whole lot more prevalent -- as you can see in this Spotify support thread. It's filled with users complaining about top artists they've never listened to, songs appearing in at the top of their lists that they didn't even know existed, or a mixture of the two. Just anecdotally talking with people outside the internet-o-sphere and you'll quickly find people with iffy Spotify Wrapped statistics. I have friends who listen exclusively to bizarre, underground punk acts, and their Wrappeds were topped by the likes of The Weeknd and Taylor Swift. Even on the Tom's Guide team, we've seen strangeness -- our own Millie Fender discovered Swift among her top artists, yet her songs didn't appear in her top 100. I asked her about the issue -- "I've got nothing against Taylor Swift, but I wouldn't describe myself as a Swiftie. It was only a few months ago that I found out that Red TV isn't a dedicated Taylor Swift TV channel, but an acronym for Taylor's Version. So when Taylor Swift swiped the fifth spot of my Spotify Wrapped top artists lists, I was a bit surprised, and I was even more surprised when I looked at my top songs of 2024 and found not a single Taylor song had made the lineup. I know she's got a monstrous back catalog, but the math really is not mathing, especially when Raye, my 6th most listened-to artist, is all over that playlist." One X user even found that the top 100 tracks are in the wrong order -- and that you needed to tap the three dots at the top of the screen to see the real order. Even stranger, they then reported that Spotify turned the feature off. Again, this isn't the first time strange stats have been found amongst Wrapped playlists. Just a quick Google search is enough to confirm that, but it's the prevalence of the issues here that is enough to register some kind of response. Just have a look at the trending page on X around Wrapped 2024, where complaints abound. But it's not just the hallucinated stats that users are unhappy about this time around either. Spotify Wrapped in previous years was known for a unique visual style, one that really stood out in social media feeds. It was imaginative, and artistic, and reflected the creativity of the artists that people were listening to. It was colorful, bright, and engaging -- almost none of which comes across in Spotify Wrapped 2024. Users don't like the block shapes and boring colors. A quick look at complaints on X shows you that people were expecting something more personal, more fun. Instead, they got something that looked almost identical to that which their friends recieved. Part of the fun wasn't just about what artists and songs would be present, but what colors and shapes would zoom across your screen. That seems to be all but gone this year, replaced instead with rushing squares and circles. Each page almost completely identikit, in color, shape, and animation. None of it felt like there was a person involved -- something we'll get to later. Spotify Wrapped wasn't just about your listening stats, far from it. It was filled with fun stats, genre rankings, and even paired you with a city last year. It dripped with personality, which made it more fun to share with your friends and family. All of that was gone this year. There were no genre roundups, no fun extras that found your musical home around the world, and little that showed you that people had sat down and decided what users might want to see. So what did we get instead? This year, Spotify has been very busy getting AI into every little nook and cranny of your Spotify experience. AI playlist builders and the AI DJ that reads out the next track in your 'up next' queue are the two main implementations that everyone knows about -- although there were some new ones this year for Wrapped. One of them is the most interesting; the AI podcast. This has no music on it and instead uses your Spotify listening history to create a kind of bizarre podcast where two hosts talk you through your musical habits. Now, personally, I don't really get it. I use my streaming services to listen to music and little else -- I don't need two of the most boring hosts around talking about my taste in late '90s Black Metal. But it does go to show that Spotify is all in on AI. There was an AI-generated playlist for Wrapped to further hammer home the point, which took you through your year with the help of the aforementioned AI DJ. That's a more worthy addition to the musical wrap-up, but users aren't completely convinced. Just read people's reactions online, especially in the trending topic on X or even the announcement thread on Reddit. Many are blaming Spotify's pivot to AI this year for the lack of personality, and some even hold it responsible for their weird Spotify statistics. I have reached out to Spotify for comment, but I am yet to hear a response. First off, there are other streaming platforms with year-end roundups. Deezer, for example, has unleashed My Deezer Year, and like everything the French streamer does, it's filled with creativity and personality. That's a streaming service with better sound quality too. Apple Music has its Replay feature, which similarly takes you through your year. There are options. If you're duty-bound to Spotify, then there is a way to really check your most-listened-to artists, songs, and genres -- Track your listening with Last.FM, for example, which gives you breakdowns over the course of the year. Whatever happens, I (and many others) are hoping that Spotify Wrapped is a whole lot better next year.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 Just Dropped with a Host of New A.I. Features
Spotify users this year are receiving a personalized A.I. podcast that examines and praises their music taste. Spotify (SPOT) just dropped its much-beloved "Spotify Wrapped" for 2024, offering users the chance to take a deep dive into their listening habits, favorite artists, top songs -- and, for the first time, a tailored A.I.-powered podcast in partnership with Google (GOOGL). Launched nearly a decade ago, Spotify Wrapped has become an eagerly awaited annual tradition for the company's more than 640 million users. Each year typically brings new elements to the annual roundup, such as introducing personalized videos from top artists and last year's "Sound Towns" feature, which paired users with a city matching their music taste. This year, Spotify users can also interact with a three-minute A.I. podcast that provides commentary on their Spotify use via two A.I.-generated hosts. You can opt out anytime. See all of our newsletters The podcasts are powered by Google's NotebookLM A.I. tool. Using the same technology behind Google's recently released Audio Overviews feature, the tool turns documents or text into a conversational dialogue between seemingly human hosts that banter and analyze the material. English-speaking users in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and Sweden will be able to listen to a lively summary of their music taste throughout 2024 -- although the podcast's A.I. hosts might occasionally mispronounce words or fail to provide a comprehensive overview, warned Google. "At Spotify, of course, we love audio, we love podcasts, and we're always looking to be where our users are listening," Molly Holder, Spotify's senior director of personalization, said during a press briefing. "This partnership with Google seemed like a very exciting integration and a way for us to do just that." Other features in this year's Spotify Wrapped This isn't the first time Spotify has rolled out an A.I.-powered Wrapped feature. Last year, the streaming giant introduced "DJ: Wrapped," an A.I. guide that provides commentary on premium subscribers' most listened-to music. The feature is also included in this year's Wrapped, with the new addition of "AI Playlists," which allows users to generate custom playlists through detailed prompts. In keeping with Spotify's tendency to unveil splashy summaries of listening habits, this year's roundup also includes "Your Music Evolution," which assigns up to three distinct musical phases to users throughout the year. Based on hundreds of thousands of different descriptors and genres that were assigned to songs through a mix of human curation and machine learning, potential music phases range from "Wild West Slow Dance Country" to "Surf Crush Beach Reggae." According to Spotify, Taylor Swift was 2024's top artist globally, with her newly released The Tortured Poets Department being the most streamed album. Sabrina Carpenter topped the song category for 2024 with her hit Espresso, while The Joe Rogan Experience topped the list of the most listened-to podcasts.

Spotify Wrapped Now Includes an AI-Generated Podcast Analyzing Your Listening Habits
If you buy something using links in our stories, we may earn a commission. This helps support our journalism. Learn more. Please also consider subscribing to WIRED Spotify Wrapped's animated yearly recap of your listening habits -- at once beloved and reviled -- is back again. But in 2024, the flashy visuals will be accompanied by a brand-new audio add-on crafted with artificial intelligence. Starting today, Spotify users will now get the chance to listen to their annual report as a personalized, AI-powered podcast, in which two synthetic hosts discuss the user's most-played tracks and favorite artists with enthusiasm. The new podcast recap is powered by Google's NotebookLM. If you've used Google's AI tool to generate an audio podcast about a topic you're researching, then the two AI-generated voices in the Wrapped podcast will sound familiar. The voices, which Spotify refers to as "AI hosts," will engage in a brief conversation about you and your 2024 listening patterns. The feature will roll out in English in the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Spotify's home country of Sweden. And just like the long-standing visual iteration of Wrapped, the AI podcast will be easily shareable. The podcast is fully personalized. The two hosts address users by name and speak in the second person. In addition to providing you with hard facts (like your top artist and total number of minutes you spent listening), the hosts will analyze the data Spotify has collected about you. They'll flatter you -- they told me I'm a "tastemaker," and called my music taste "so diverse" and "so unique." They'll extrapolate details of your lifestyle based on your listening habits. For example, they told me they could picture me strutting down the street in pink pilates gear to Chappel Roan's "Red Wine Supernova," and presumed that I sang along to the Rent soundtrack while in the shower. They expressed curiosity about my life, at one point wondering what I was up to on January 9, the day I listened to more minutes of music than any other day of 2024. This isn't Spotify's first time incorporating an AI-powered voice into the Wrapped experience. Last year, the platform's resident AI DJ, called DJ X, was included as a Wrapped add-on, providing commentary on users' 2023 listening habits. This year, Spotify expanded this feature to serve Spanish speakers, indicating the company sees a future in AI-generated audio. This AI-enhanced version of Wrapped arrives at a time when users are expressing concerns about Big Tech's surveillance of their behavior and rampant data collection. Spotify in particular has faced criticism for rebranding its precise tracking of user activity as a cozy and sharable holiday gift. Listeners have also been slow to embrace AI-generated podcasts, which typically feature cloying virtual hosts that seem eerie in their attempts to sound human.

Spotify Wrapped, TikTok -- Maybe the Algorithms Are Losing Touch
If there's one term that's been used more than others when describing this year's Spotify Wrapped, it's this: flat. The New York Times said it. So did TikTokkers. Between its "Pink Pilates Princess Roller Skating Pop" phases and AI-generated mini-podcasts, lots of listeners took time away from the time-honored tradition of posting their cringiest Wrapped stats to say that this year's offerings were milquetoast at best. "Spotify Wrapped is a bit ... underwhelming this year," wrote one X user. "NOT worth the hype," offered another. The annual tradition "lost what made it so dynamic in the first place," wrote a third, citing things like location- and music-based Sound Towns that rolled out with Wrapped in previous years. "Which is to say that PEOPLE make things better. Those layoffs are showing." Quite a few frustrated Spotify users referenced layoffs at the company and questioned whether its shedding of key talent was to blame for Wrapped's fizzle. The company let go of some 1,500 people, 17 percent of its workforce, this time last year, something CEO Daniel Ek later acknowledged "did disrupt our day-to-day operations more than we anticipated." Seemingly, Wrapped relied on AI more than ever this year, with AI podcasts to analyze your listening habits, an algorithmic playlist hosted by Spotify's AI DJ, and bizarre, probably AI-generated genre descriptions. Yet it seems unlikely the layoffs were the only thing that impacted the quality of Wrapped this year. It could be that the algorithms are just losing touch. That's not to say they're not tracking stream numbers the way they used to -- although there are conspiracy theories to that effect -- but rather that everyone now knows they're being tracked, and algorithms just aren't able to pick up on organic trends the way they used to. After years of embarrassingly finding out that they spent more time listening to My Chemical Romance breakup songs than they did listening to their friends' advice, people are now self-conscious about what they play and in what volume. Just as much as everyone went into this year's Wrapped season prepared to brag about their Brat Summer, they were just as worried about telling on their Sad Bastard autumn. Parents, once again, found that their Wrapped wasn't about their own tastes, but their children's.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 Is Here, and It's All About AI
An AI podcast feature generates two "hosts" to discuss your listening history over the past year. Spotify Wrapped 2024 is finally here -- and not a moment too soon. It seems most of Spotify's competition, including Apple Music, YouTube Music, and even Amazon Music, have already launched their annual recaps for 2024. But if you subscribe to the world's most popular music streaming service, it's your turn to recap your year in listening. As with previous years' Wrapped, your recap includes the basic listening stats, including your top artists and songs of the year, and the total number of minutes you listened to Spotify. However, for 2024, Spotify is rolling out something different: In addition to the standard graphics you can share with friends, the service now offers an "AI podcast" to recap your year. Here's how it works: Two AI "hosts" go back and forth, discussing songs, artists, and genres you listened to throughout 2024. Based on Spotify's press release, it looks like the podcast isn't very long -- just under four minutes -- although it's not clear whether that playback length changes based on the user's overall listening habits. In any case, you'll find your AI podcast the Home page of your Spotify app, which you can share with friends (so long as you're okay making the "podcast" public). It's available in English for both Free and Premium users in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden. Spotify says the podcast is built using Google's NotebookLM model, which makes sense: You can use that model to build your own AI podcasts based on whatever materials you want. You can share web links, PDFs, text, and more, and generate a fake podcast that discusses all the sources. In addition, if you subscribe to Premium, your AI DJ will comment on your listening history for 2024, plus tell you about the top songs and artists of the year across Spotify. This feature is available in both English and Spanish. You can also ask Spotify to create an AI playlist based on results of your Wrapped. For example, you can request a playlist of your top five genres, or a playlist of artists similar to those in your top lists. It's not just AI features here, of course. Spotify has a number of perks that come with this year's wrapped. There's "Your Music Evolution," which describes up to three "music phases" you went through this year (and includes a playlist of the highlighted songs); "Your Top Artist Reimagined," which shows your top artist of the year as well as what percentage of listeners you were in for that artist; a playlist of your top music videos, if your region supports videos; messages from your favorite artists (Spotify spotlights Peso Pluma, ROSÉ, Billie Eilish, Usher, Sabrina Carpenter, and Karol G in the press release, but says there are thousands more participating); messages from podcasters, like the creators behind Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain, Crime Junkie, Distractible, Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett; and additional playlists created by Spotify music editors.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 includes AI-hosted podcasts discussing your listening habits
All the usual data is also available, plus info about audiobook listening trends. There's a chill in the air, lights have been strung through the trees and winter coats are a daily need. All this can only mean one thing: it's Spotify Wrapped season. Today, Spotify Wrapped begins rolling out to users across the globe with a slew of new features powered by Google's AI-powered NotebookLM. To be honest, some of it is, let's say, interesting. Notably, Spotify is releasing a My Wrapped AI Podcast with two hosts discussing all your listening preferences for the year. These hosts in question are powered by the same technology that NotebookLM uses to make audio overviews. The podcasts should last three to six minutes, are shareable and available for free and premium users in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland and Sweden for a limited time. If you love listening to AI then maybe this is exciting for you but, personally, I'm happy with my usual roundup. Spotify does caveat that it might not "provide a comprehensive overview" and could mispronounce words or use inappropriate language if its in a song title, for example. Then there's the AI DJ, which brings you through the music you listened to and provides commentary. Yes, this sounds a bit like the AI podcast, but it should focus more on the actual music and how you used the DJ. It should also touch on aspects like your top artists and most listened to songs. However, this feature and a wrapped version of Spotify's AI Playlist are only available to premium subscribers. As always, you can also see how your listening choices measure up against other users. Spoiler that's not really a spoiler: Taylor Swift and her album The Tortured Poet's Department took the most streamed spots for artist and album, respectively, both in the US and globally. Women took the top five spots for most streamed albums globally, while Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter held the title of most streamed song for the US and world. Other categories of interest include the top podcasts and most viral songs, plus one interesting addition: audiobooks. Spotify has leaned heavily into audiobooks this year, rolling out a subscription solely for the medium and new tools like a sleep timer and detailed author pages. So, it's no surprise that the platform has released its first ever year-end top charts for audiobooks. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas was the top audiobook for premium users in both the US and globally -- a near inevitably for anyone paying even a little attention to book trends this year. Also new this year: Authors will join creators, artists, podcasters and advertisers in receiving a Wrapped all about how their readers listened to their books in 2024. As always, Spotify Wrapped is shaping up to be a bit cringe (as many new AI creations are) and the usual burst of fun. You can explore these features and more on your Spotify Wrapped or, if this has all been irrelevant to you, maybe on the just announced Amazon Music Delivered or through Apple Music Replay.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 Is Here, Adds Podcast-Style AI Recaps From Google
Spotify Wrapped and its customized yearly listening recaps are here, and perhaps unsurprisingly, there's a lot of AI packed into the 2024 release. Wrapped launches today in the Spotify mobile app (iOS and Android). You can find it by selecting "Wrapped" on your home feed or by searching for it. If you don't see it, make sure your Spotify app is updated to the latest version. This year's biggest update is a personalized podcast overview powered by Google's NotebookLM. Two "AI hosts" spin up the data from your Spotify Wrapped into a brief discussion (about three to six minutes), Spotify told PCMag in a media briefing. It's available in English for eligible Free and Premium users for a limited time across the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden, Spotify says. NotebookLM is one of the most fun and unique AI products to launch this year (we used it to turn a diary into a podcast), though most people probably haven't tried it out yet. Integrating with Spotify will give millions of music listeners their first taste of this highly personal tech. Spotify users can also share their AI podcasts with friends. The hosts will likely be the same female and male voice NotebookLM has featured to date. Google plans to introduce new AI voices in 2025, says Steven Johnson, head of editorial at Google Labs. Google engineers built a customized version of its Gemini Flash AI model to scale up the tech for Spotify. "We've learned a lot and some techniques we're able to bring back to NotebookLM," Johnson says. "It was quite an impressive engineering effort." We can expect more NotebookLM partnerships to crop up in other brands next year. Google is exploring more opportunities "both on the audio front, and the tech front." Spotify also added its own audio overview for AI DJ listeners, which debuted in 2023 for Premium subscribers. This feature offers a curated playlist to help users discover new music. The AI DJ Wrapped stats will show you things like how long you spent listening to the DJ and the types of music you explored. The voice of the AI DJ, Xavier, made his public debut at the briefing. "Having the AI voice sound human is crucial for humans to foster a deeper connection with the DJ," Xavier says. "I get marriage invitations all the time. Hey, ma!" Also new in Wrapped for Premium subscribers this year is a prompt-based AI playlist. You can tell Spotify to make a custom selection of songs based on your Wrapped playlist, such as, "Give me a new playlist based on the top 3 songs." Spotify also added new types of data to the core Wrapped product. One is "your music evolution," which charts how your "tastes and moods changed throughout the year," Spotify says. It will include up to three musical phases, tagged with a descriptor and the most-listened-to genres and artists. Spotify will also create a playlist to highlight your music evolution. You will also get to see music and podcast clips from your top artists and podcasters. One new stat, "longest listening streak," will show the artist you listened to on repeat during the year. Finally, expect to see lots of Wrapped stories on TikTok. In November, Spotify integrated more deeply with the social video app, so people can now share their yearly results on the TikTok "For You" page and Stories.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 adds an AI podcast powered by Google's NotebookLM | TechCrunch
Spotify Wrapped, the streamer's highly anticipated annual listening recap, has arrived. In addition to its usual personalized summary detailing your favorite artists, songs, podcasts, and more, the company this year is introducing two new features, including most notably, an AI-powered podcast of your 2024 Wrapped created with Google's AI summarization tool, NotebookLM. Spotify is also rolling out a new data story called "Your Music Evolution," which lets you see how your musical interests evolved over the past year. While Spotify previously built its Wrapped features in-house, the addition of a Notebook LM-powered podcast now sees Spotify working with an outside partner on a flagship Wrapped feature. Using Google's Gemini AI, this year's Wrapped will allow you to explore a personalized audio overview of your music listening in 2024, including things like your top songs, top artists, top genres, and more. The result is meant to feel like you're listening to a podcast about your Wrapped. The addition follows a breakout moment for Google's AI notetaking tool, which went viral in 2024 as people began using the service's new Audio Overview feature to create conversations between two AI hosts who riff on whatever topic you've fed into the app. Though designed to help you summarize notes and research, people began feeding all sorts of content into NotebookLM, like blog posts, books, or even diary entries, leading to interesting insights and sometimes hilarious commentary. Spotify says it was inspired to work with Google on the new Wrapped feature after seeing how consumers reacted to the AI technology. When you play your Wrapped "podcast," accessible from the Home screen on Spotify's app, the AI hosts will compliment your music taste and summarize your listening activity. You can also save the AI-created audio clip to your mobile device or publish it to social media. The feature will be available for a limited time to both free and paid users in English in the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden. This year, Spotify is also expanding its social media integrations to include a way to share to both your TikTok feed and your TikTok Stories -- an ideal destination for sharing the new personalized AI audio experiences. While the AI podcast will likely be a hit on social media, its inclusion in Wrapped feels somewhat iterative. The launch follows last year's Wrapped's addition of Spotify's popular AI DJ feature, which offered AI-generated commentary around your top artists and songs. This year, you're again getting an AI narrating your musical history, but now have two AI speakers instead of just one. The AI DJ feature will also integrate your Wrapped into its own spoken commentary and stories. The AI DJ is available in both English and Spanish. Another AI feature is aimed at Premium subscribers, who can enter prompts to generate AI playlists based on their Wrapped experience, building on the existing AI playlist feature, launched in April. For instance, you could prompt Spotify to play more artists like your top 5 Wrapped artists. Meanwhile, Wrapped didn't introduce as much in terms of new personalized data stories as it has in previous years, when the company experimented with fun, designed-to-go-viral features like those identifying your music personality, matching you to a town that shares your musical tastes, identifying your "audio aura," or turning your listening history into a game you can share with friends, among other things. Instead, its big addition on this front is the feature called "Your Music Evolution," which will track up to three distinct musical phases you went through during the year. For a year that saw Beyoncé doing country, the celebration of a Brat summer, a continued Taylor Swift Eras tour, an Oasis reunion, and a number of notable collabs, Spotify will have a lot to choose from when it comes to tracking users' changing interests. The feature will also come with a personalized playlist that will be available from the Wrapped feed in Home. Audiobooks are another new addition to Wrapped in 2024. Now available across a range of global markets, including the U.S., U.K., Australia, and others, Spotify's audiobooks catalog doubled this year to over 300,000 titles. Spotify Wrapped will include a new audiobooks editorial hub and will offer a dedicated Wrapped experience for authors and publishers who want to see how Spotify's users engaged with their work in 2024, similar to the experience it already offers for podcasters. Other areas of the Wrapped experience have also been tweaked or updated. For instance, your Top 5 Artists Story will now show your "Longest Listening Streak." When you share music or podcasts, Spotify will tell you if what you're listening to was in your top 100 songs, top 20 artists, or top 5 podcasts. The company is also bringing back "Top Listeners," which shows what percentile you're in for your favorite artist -- a feature that lets users brag to friends how they've been into a favorite artist long before anyone else. Artist video clips will return, too, with thousands of artists sharing messages to top fans, including Billie Eilish, Usher, Sabrina Carpenter, Karol G, Peso Pluma, Chappell Roan, ROSÉ, and others. This year, Wrapped will also add Podcaster Clips, or video messages from podcasters like Emma Chamberlain ("Anything Goes"), Ashely Flowers ("Crime Junkie"), Markiplier (Mark Fischbach, "Distractable"), Steven Bartlett ("Diary of a CEO"), and others. And in celebration of Top Artist Taylor Swift, a couple of Easter Eggs in the app will illuminate Spotify's buttons with Era-themed animations -- like sparkles for "Fearless" or seagulls for "1989 (Taylor's Version)," among others. Fans will also have access to a Top Artist AR friendship bracelet on Snapchat and Swift will receive a Global Top Artist badge in the app. The company today also revealed its top lists for 2024, including the following (in order of popularity):

Spotify Wrapped Went All-In on AI and Everyone Hates It
I know that Spotify Wrapped -- along with all the other variations on the same theme -- has been popular for years. To be honest, I've always thought sharing screenshots of your most-listened-to artists or most-read books was kinda dumb. I know that in most years, mine would be a controversial opinion, and that's fine. Maybe it's because I have children who also use my Spotify account on various devices throughout the home, and -- as a result -- my Spotify Wrapped has no relation at all to my musical taste. Though I imagine that's a problem shared by a lot of parents, I understand that Spotify Wrapped is an incredibly popular feature and that millions of people love sharing screenshots of their top artists and song lists. I know this because I see all of you posting them. This year, however, Spotify seems to have brought many people to my side. It's not that people think Wrapped -- as an idea -- is dumb. It's just that Spotify managed to ruin the whole thing by going all-in on AI.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 adds an AI podcast to recap your listening habits
This year's Spotify Wrapped has arrived. As you look at your stats for 2024, you'll find a few new features you can use to interact with your data, including one that lets you listen to and share an AI-generated podcast summarizing your listening habits. Spotify built this feature using Google's AI note-taking tech, NotebookLM, which can generate a podcast with two AI "hosts" based on your research. On Spotify, the AI hosts will tailor their conversation to your top songs, artists, and genres of the year. This feature is available to free and Premium users in English across the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden. "At Spotify, of course, we love audio, we love podcasts, and we're always looking to be where our users are listening," Molly Holder, Spotify's senior director of product for personalization, said during a press briefing. "This partnership with Google seemed like a very exciting integration and a way for us to do just that." Spotify Wrapped will also attempt to track how your taste evolved throughout the year with a new feature that will assign you up to three musical phrases for each month, like "heatwave," "beach," and "reggaeton." The app will come up with a personalized "music evolution" playlist as well, containing your favorite songs throughout the year and new music tailored to your taste. Spotify's AI DJ will again have a role in this year's Wrapped, as Premium subscribers can use it to create playlists based on the year's data with prompts like "Make me a playlist of songs that represent my music journey over the year." Some other changes include the ability to see your longest listening streak for your top five artists and an update to the "share" button that will show you whether the audio you're sharing is in your top 100 songs, top 20 artists, or top five podcasts. Apple Music, YouTube Music, and even Amazon Music all got the jump on Wrapped this year, releasing personalized recaps before Spotify. Still, there's no doubt which entry in recap season is the most discussed one.

I just listened to my Spotify Wrapped AI podcast -- and it's weird
Thanks for saying the same thing as the Wrapped images, I guess Spotify Wrapped has officially arrived. All year, we listen to music, and Spotify remembers everything. It meticulously tracks your favorite songs, artists and other music trends throughout the year and gives you fun images to share on social media so everyone knows about your obsession. But this year, Wrapped has a new trick up its sleeve -- an AI-generated podcast that analyzes your music tastes. A male and female AI voice, powered by NotebookLM, pours over your Wrapped and talks about the bands and songs you listened to most. As you might expect, it's weird. Hearing two people who sound almost human talking about how you spent the last year feels different from looking at neatly animated videos on the traditional Wrapped. Thankfully, the podcast is short: mine was just over three minutes (here's a link if you want to hear it talk about my music), about the same amount of time it'll take you to go through the traditional Spotify Wrapped package. And that's because the AI is basically repeating everything you already read, but in a more conversational tone. I was hoping for some analysis that wasn't in the main feature. Still, with it being essentially the same, I don't get why this feature exists outside of Spotify wanting to say it included some AI features (as every company seems to be doing right now). Outside of the information and analysis not being new, the conversation felt just fake enough to take me out of it. As soon as the female AI voice inserted odd pauses into Dance Gavin Dance, my number one artist of 2024, it took me out of it. While it's a neat feature for Spotify to include that makes Wrapped stand out, it doesn't feel like the AI podcast is ready for prime time yet. With the rapid advancements in AI tech, I expect it to be much better next year, assuming it sticks around. In the meantime, I'll stick to the traditional Wrapped instead of listening to almost human AI bots talk about my love of Deathcore, Post-hardcore and other music.

Spotify's Overbearing Recommendations Are Ruining Wrapped
Spotify's Wrapped AI Podcast Is Creepier Than You Think It Will Be Quick Links The Problem With Spotify's Uniform Recommendations Spotify's Algorithm Takes Over Your Wrapped Spotify's Stinginess Only Makes Things Worse At the end of every year, Spotify releases "Wrapped," a personalized summary of your music listening habits for the last 10-12 months. Although it's a neat party trick-and people love to share it-Wrapped seems to get progressively worse each year. The Problem With Spotify's Uniform Recommendations When I first started using Spotify, the recommended music was awesome. I was given a steady stream of unknown, underground music, which fundamentally changed my approach to music. Some of my now-favorite bands were introduced to me through Spotify's recommendations. However, as Spotify and I grew more accustomed to each other, all of my mixes began blending into a giant hodgepodge of the same stuff. For instance, Spotify provides me with "Indie Mix," "Indie Rock," "Modern Psychedelia," "Happy Mix," and "2010s Mix," and half of each playlist just ends up being the same few songs. The very algorithm that made Spotify awesome has now become its executioner. Oh, so you like Electric Feel by MGMT? Get ready to hear it in every single playlist for the next three years. Artist-specific playlists and their radios are even worse. Spotify will always recycle the same twenty songs instead of showcasing hidden gems or even songs that the artist is featured on. Combine it with the not-so-random shuffle and the 50- or 100-song limit that many auto-generated playlists have, and you're stuck in an endless algorithmic loop of repetitive music listening with no variety in sight. Spotify's Algorithm Takes Over Your Wrapped I mostly listen to whatever Spotify hands me, as I don't have the time and energy necessary to create custom playlists. My top artists and songs in the previous years generally reflected my actual music preferences. This made Spotify Wrapped a nice summary of what I enjoyed throughout the year, which largely included my favorite artists and songs. Close However, this year's Wrapped was dominated by the algorithm, and it shows. I believe I'm not the only one saying that this year's Spotify Wrapped was the worst one yet. Granted, it's a bit of my fault, too. I have been using Spotify to play TV show theme songs for my alarm clock since September, so my Wrapped was dominated by The Wire's seasonal theme songs, which bled into my regular playlists. I later fixed this issue by excluding them from my taste profile. Still, the last song, "Minor Setback," is a completely random track that Spotify decided would become my earworm for the year. The artists are even more random. The top spot is my favorite band, but Spotify's algorithm picked the other four. I don't even know who Crumb and NEIL FRANCES are-that's a big problem. Spotify's Stinginess Only Makes Things Worse Spotify Wrapped's name suggests that it's going to wrap up your year by providing a thorough overview of your Spotify use. However, all it really gives you is your top five artists and songs, minutes and number of artists listened to, and a few top genres. If the algorithm hijacked your top five, you're out of luck. I have no idea how my actual favorite songs and artists fared this year. Even Apple Music Replay is more generous, as it gives users a list of their top 15 songs and artists. Close Although the data in Wrapped is technically accurate, it feels superficial from a user's perspective. I'd much rather know how many times or hours I spent listening to my favorite songs and artists, either organized in a pie chart or as part of my 2024 Wrapped playlist. This is especially true for genres. I want to know how many hours I spent listening to various rap, rock, and metal subgenres. There's so much more interesting information that Spotify could provide in Wrapped than what they actually give us. I'm talking about useless stuff like the creepy Wrapped AI podcast, which probably used way too much processing power to deliver. You can do better, Spotify.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 Arrives with New AI Features
Every year, Spotify fans look forward to getting their Spotify Wrapped, which is a personal summary in which the music they played is shown to them. Improving this feature further, 2024 saw Spotify adding new artificial tools that make the music recap more intelligent, informative, and personal. Well, with these new AI-driven features, Spotify Wrapped is sure to become even more interactive than ever before -- to offer users deeper insights into their musical journey. The appeal of Spotify Wrapped has been that the music service can reflect on the most-played , artists, and over the year. But in 2024, Spotify went beyond playcounts with AI features. Now, it gets even closer to trying to understand how people hear music: it perceives patterns and moods changing when listening to a favorite song or type of music. Meaning Wrapped is not just a reflection of favorite songs but tells people how music fits into different parts of daily life. Another wonderful thing about Spotify's AI is that it can create far more specific and rich playlists based on a user's listening habits. It can, in fact, bring attention to "underrated" tracks that weren't played that often but are still important to the taste of the music of the listener. It's what really puts Wrapped to be an accurate reflection of any person's year in music, unveiling the listener with well-loved hits and forgotten gems.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 arrives: 5 new features to check out
'Tis the season of colorful graphics, embarrassing stats, and personalized data stories! That's right -- Spotify Wrapped has finally landed on your Spotify app. The 2024 edition is chock-full of new features, from a Wrapped AI Podcast that editorializes your year in music to the moods and emotions that captured "Your Music Evolution." The much-anticipated annual event offers fans a glimpse into their most-played tracks, artists, and genres, wrapped in vibrant visuals and shareable stats. It's a nostalgic trip through the soundtrack of your year, and it even boasts stats from the podcasts and audiobooks you listened to. In 2024, it's not just about what you heard -- it's about how music shaped your story. Here's what that means for this year's Spotify Wrapped and all the fun surprises you can expect. Listen, we all go through phases. Sometimes you want to be a brat and other times you're an "Otaku Hot Girl." Spotify knows your listening habits can be mercurial, so they're introducing "Your Music Evolution" with this year's Wrapped. This new data story reveals the musical phases that defined your year. You'll receive up to three musical phases for 2024. For example, I started the year in my "Light Academia Soft Piano Classical" era, but by spring, I re-emerged as a "Roller Skating Pop" princess. (What can I say? The pop girlies were releasing bangers.) And I'm ending the year in my "Hallyu Catwalk K-pop" phase, which sounds right. Your Music Evolution will also be available in playlist form, found in the Wrapped feed on Home in the Spotify app. Tracks within the playlist include both your go-to favorites and algorithmic picks related to your musical phases throughout the year. Every superfan wears their "Top Listeners" stat with pride. (The stat reveals the percentile of listeners you're in for your favorite artist. I'm in the top 3 percent of Stray Kids listeners worldwide -- what about you?) This year, Spotify is taking it one step further with your "Longest Listening Streak," capturing your journey with the most-played artist in your Top 5. The biggest new feature of this year's Wrapped is the launch of your Spotify Wrapped AI Podcast. Built with Google's NotebookLM, this personalized pod tells the story of your year in music with colorful commentary from two AI hosts who attempt to make sense of your top songs, artists, and genres. Per Spotify, this unique feature will be available in English for eligible Free and Premium users for a limited time across the U.S., the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden. Last year, Spotify gave its Premium users 15 hours of free audiobook listening time per month. Now, with over 300,000 titles in its catalog, Spotify is becoming a destination for avid readers -- er, listeners. So it only makes sense that this year's Wrapped data would include the Top Audiobooks of 2024. While there isn't any personalized data on your top audiobooks of the year, there is a separate editorial hub for the year in audiobooks on the app and desktop. Spotify's inaugural top author globally is Sarah J. Maas, whose A Court of Thorns and Roses series went mega-viral across social platforms this year. As such, A Court of Thorns and Roses was also the most-streamed audiobook of 2024. Coming in second and third are The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien and I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy, respectively. Rounding out the Top 5 is A Court of Mist and Fury by Maas at No. 4, and It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover at No. 5. Authors will also have access to their own Spotify Wrapped for Authors hub, which will show insightful data on the listening habits of their readers. Big news for those who like publicly posting their Wrapped results across all social platforms: You can now share your Wrapped directly on TikTok.

Spotify Wrapped misses the mark with this one joyless feature
This year's Spotify Wrapped came with an odd surprise. The app's annual roundup featured more than just the usual candy-colored data about which artists, songs, and podcasts users streamed the most. It included a "Wrapped AI podcast" feature, using Google's NotebookLM technology to verbally recap users' listening habits. This bizarre addition is more than just an audio companion for the information presented in Wrapped. Two NPR-inflected, artificial-intelligence voices go through your listening highlights in a conversational (albeit still robotic) manner while elaborating on your "moods," "vibes," and interests throughout the year. It feels both like listening to a doctor go through your bloodwork results and a psychic vaguely supposing facts about your life.

Your Guide to Spotify Wrapped, 2024
The end of the year is near, and the 2024 edition of Spotify Wrapped is here. The annual recap of what music you listened to most, which began in 2016 as a marketing tactic, has since become a pop-culture staple mimicked by rival streaming platforms like Apple Music and Amazon Music as well as other services like Duolingo and Reddit. Spotify's personalized insights are presented in fun, share-worthy graphics, and the package includes several unique features -- from video messages from artists to "Your Music Evolution," which analyzes how your tastes have transformed throughout the year, and even some new artificial intelligence twists. With the launch on Wednesday of this year's Wrapped, here's what to know. Subscribed Spotify users -- even if they don't have Premium -- can access their personalized Wrapped experience in the mobile or desktop app (make sure to have the latest version downloaded). The Wrapped feed will be featured on the app home page and can be accessed directly through this link. In addition to presenting your annual lists of most-streamed artists and songs, 2024 Wrapped introduces the Your Music Evolution feature, which uses your listening data to reveal how your music choices have changed throughout the year. Users will receive descriptions of up to three musical "phases" characterized by specific genres and artists. Users will also now get to see the artist they enjoyed most this year with the new Longest Listening Streak highlight, while Spotify is bringing back Top Listeners, which reveals what percentile you rank among listeners of your favorite artist. AI will also play an expanded role in this year's Wrapped: users will get a personalized podcast about their music listening this year, delivered by generative AI hosts and built with Google's NotebookLM. Spotify says this feature will be available in English for eligible users for a limited time across Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden, the U.K., and the U.S. Spotify is also integrating Wrapped into its popular existing AI features, including AI DJ, which will tell users about their year in listening and even about their personal relationship with AI DJ, and AI Playlists, which will allow Premium users to create personalized playlists with their Wrapped data. Data tracking begins in January and ends a few weeks prior to launch. For the second year in a row, Taylor Swift, TIME's 2023 Person of the Year, was the most listened-to artist on the platform with more than 26.6 billion streams globally. She's followed by The Weeknd and Bad Bunny. (Spotify counts one stream if a user listens for 30 seconds or more.) Unsurprisingly, Swift also holds this year's top spot on the most-streamed albums list, with her The Tortured Poets Department: the Anthology. Albums from female artists dominated Spotify's list this year: Billie Eilish's Hit Me Hard and Soft came in second, while Sabrina Carpenter's Short n' Sweet was third. Carpenter's "Espresso" was the most-streamed song of the year, with more than 1.6 billion streams. Benson Boone's "Beautiful Things" and Eilish's "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" took the next two spots, respectively. Joe Rogan's The Joe Rogan Experience claims the title of the most-streamed podcast on Spotify for the fifth year in a row, and Spotify also unveiled its first top-streamed audiobook in Premium: fantasy-romance novel A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. Spotify encourages users to share their Wrapped results on social media, particularly Instagram and TikTok, both of which Spotify has rolled out custom integrations with in the last month. A number of third-party applications that you can connect your Spotify account to can also analyze your listening data. For example, How Bad Is Your Streaming Music? uses AI to judge your taste; Instafest will generate a music festival line-up for you based on your favorite artists; and Receiptify condenses your listening stats in the form of a receipt.

Spotify Wrapped arrives - with an AI twist for a limited time
NotebookLM teams up with the streaming service to bring you an AI-hosted podcast all about your year in music. Here's how to hear it. The music you listen to reflects your emotions, life phases, and tastes. As a result, every year, Spotify users eagerly await their Spotify Wrapped results, which showcase their most-played artists, songs, albums, and podcasts of the year. Now, the experience is here, and it comes with a major AI upgrade. On Wednesday, Google and Spotify unveiled a new "My Wrapped AI Podcast," featuring two NotebookLM hosts discussing -- or "unwrapping" -- your music listening results from the previous year. The unique conversation is generated to discuss your specific results and musical tastes. Also: The best earbuds: Expert tested and reviewed The technology powering the feature is Google's NotebookLM Audio Overviews, the AI tool that has gone viral for transforming notes into engaging podcasts. Some popular use cases for the tool include discussing complex research papers or class notes because the AI streamlines complex material into an interesting and informal conversation. The Wrapped AI Podcast is available for free and premium Spotify users in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden for a limited time. To access it, visit your Wrapped feed on the Spotify homepage or visit this link and tap "Your Wrapped AI podcast." Google warns that the AI hosts may occasionally mispronounce words or not generate an in-depth overview as expected, likely due to the unpredictability of AI models. However, it is the first personalized podcast reflecting your year in music, and if you have never tried NotebookLM, the results may blow your mind. Other new, non-AI-related features are coming to Spotify Wrapped, such as Your Music Evolution data story, which showcases up to three musical phases that define a user's year in music. Furthermore, users will receive a Music Evolution Playlist that can be found on the Wrapped feed on the home page. The playlist includes the users' musical phases throughout the year, as well as new songs that Spotify thinks users will be interested in based on their other picks. To help you identify whether you are a superfan, Spotify will now show users the artist they enjoyed the most in the year with a "longest listening streak" feature that shows how many days in a row you listened to an artist. This will be shared along with the classic "Top Listeners" feature that shows what percentage of listeners you are in for your favorite artists. Lastly, Artist Clips and Podcaster Clips will offer users short messages from their favorite artists, including the top artists at the moment, such as Peso Pluma, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, and more.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 Adds Personalized AI Podcast About Your Music
Spotify has added a host of new features to its yearly Wrapped event including a new AI podcast based on each users' "best of 2024". Building on last year's AI DJ, Spotify has collaborated with Google to produce the AI podcast. The new audio feature boasts two voices which discuss a users' most-listened to songs and from a brief demo at an event in New York, also flatters their taste in music. Wrapped is Spotify's way of aggregating global streaming data across the globe, and the company announced its Top Artist for the second year in a row was Taylor Swift. As a result, the company has included Wrapped Easter Eggs for Swifties including custom animations based on each of her 'Eras.' While Apple Music's top song was 'Not Like Us' by Kendrick Lamar, Spotify's was Sabrina Carpenter's 'Espresso'. The company said its top 8 streamed albums were also produced by women for the first time. The Wrapped package also incorporates custom clips from artists and podcasters thanking fans for their support. Spotify is a music streaming service with 252 million subscribers and over 100 million tracks. It also includes access to 15 hours of audiobooks as part of its $11 subscription tier. While competitors such as Apple and Amazon include lossless and spatial music -- for no extra cost -- Spotify has yet to announce a date for its long-delayed Supremium service.

Spotify's Wrapped AI Podcast Is Creepier Than You Think It Will Be
See Your Spotify Wrapped Around the Year With These Alternatives Quick Links My Wrapped AI Podcast Creepy, Cringey, or Pointless? Spotify Wrapped is always eagerly anticipated, but the 2024 iteration has been met with a fair bit of disappointment. The usual features are all present, but, unsurprisingly, the big new thing involves AI, and it's incredibly weird. My Wrapped AI Podcast For Wrapped 2024, Spotify and Google teamed up to create a personalized mini-podcast episode called "My Wrapped AI Podcast" to go along with the recap for everyone. This was made possible through NotebookLM, which is described as an "AI Research Assistant." The idea with NotebookLM is you can upload a bunch of different sources of information-PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, Google Docs, etc-and it will present it in an easier-to-digest format. One such format is "Audio Overview," which essentially converts the information into a podcast episode with multiple hosts. You can find your AI Podcast in the "Wrapped" section of the mobile app or by visiting spotify.com/wrappedAIpodcast in a browser. Creepy, Cringey, or Pointless? The "Audio Overview" feature is what was used to generate a podcast for Spotify listeners. Two AI "hosts" go over your Wrapped as if they're providing a commentary track while scrolling through it on your phone. As an example, my personal AI Podcast is below (3:17). First thing first, like a lot of AI features and products, I'm not sure what to do with this. The majority of the podcast is spent just reciting stats I already saw in my Wrapped. A commentary generally adds some extra insight, but this is mainly the same exact stuff in audio form. I get the feeling that Google is trying to make NotebookLM look impressive, but that is not at all how I came away feeling. Two real humans who know nothing about me could look at my Wrapped and record a very similar podcast episode. It would almost certainly be more entertaining, funny, and useful. Nothing special was accomplished with the use of AI here. Well, I shouldn't say nothing-I did get creeped out. There is something inherently creepy and offputting about hearing two completely fabricated personalities having a fake conversation about yourself. It's not cute, it's not funny, it's just odd. In the back of your head, you know it's not real. You know everything they say is pulled from an internet search. There's nothing genuine about it, and that matters. Beyond creepy and somewhat pointless, it reeks of cringe. I recently wrote about tech companies being desperate, and AI is a big part of that. Google desperately wants people to care about its AI services, and it saw Wrapped as a way to get in front of more people. The sad thing is I've been pretty happy with Spotify's previous use of AI because it focused on music discovery. Teaming up with Google has killed some of that good feeling. At the end of the day, I'm sure most Spotify users are never going to listen to their Wrapped AI Podcast (which won't offset the carbon footprint of generating the podcast for nearly 640 million users). It's simply another example of tech companies giving us things we never asked for.

AI is curating your Spotify Wrapped recap this year | Stuff
Whether a single playlist was your soundtrack to 2024, or you've shuffled between more artists than a Glastonbury festival line-up, Spotify's servers have been keeping track. The music streaming giant has tapped up AI to reveal your Wrapped 2024 tastes - and it's rolling out right now. This is the tenth time Spotify has shone a light on the artists, genres and tracks its millions of users have been streaming. As well as the now-familiar cards breaking down your listening habits, this year sees the AI DJ describe your 2024 music story, with commentary about top songs and artists. Prefer something a little more bitesize? Spotify has teamed up with Google's NotebookLM AI team to generate bespoke AI-hosted podcasts that dig a little deeper into your tunes. They're three- to six-minute recaps, not hour-long deep dives, but you can still expect the two AI hosts to cover your favourite songs, genres and performers in a more conversational manner. Spotify Premium subscribers can also build on their Wrapped results with AI playlists, which let you build new collections with prompts like "artists similar to my top 5". They're rolling out to the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland now. Fan favourite breakdowns have been expanded, so the Top Artist section how shows your longest listening streak as well as what percentage of listeners you're in for that performer. Spotify Wrapped will show up in the Spotify mobile app for iOS and Android starting from today, the 4th of December. Make sure your apps are the most up-to-date versions and you should see Wrapped on your homescreen. You can also see your personalised Wrapped rundown on a desktop web browser, by heading to spotify.com/wrapped. It didn't take a crystal ball to predict that Taylor Swift would dominate streaming services this year. The megalithic success of the Eras tour propelled the star to the number one artist and number one album slots for the USA, UK and globally overall. Swifties seemed to prefer listening to her albums in their entirety, though, as none of her individual tracks made the top ten songs lists. In the US and globally Sabrina Carpenter took top honours with Espresso, while the UK pushed Noah Kahan's Stick Season to the number one slot. Joe Rogan once again had the most popular podcast. The host's controversial backing of now-President Elect Donald Trump didn't stop him from securing the top spot in the UK, US and globally. Call Her Daddy reached second place in the US and globally, while the UK preferred Steven Bartlett's Diary of a CEO.

Spotify Wrapped Includes a Personalized AI Podcast
See Your Spotify Wrapped Around the Year With These Alternatives Spotify Wrapped, the yearly summary of music habits, is introducing a new feature for its 2024 release. A personalized podcast was created with Google's NotebookLM for many users. The Spotify Wrapped of 2024's podcast, "Your Spotify Wrapped AI Podcast," gives an audio summary of what you listened to over the year. It uses two AI hosts to guide you through your favorite songs and artists, looking at your listening trends from 2024. Each podcast is specifically made for each user, based on their unique music history on Spotify. The podcast uses technology similar to what's behind NotebookLM's Audio Overviews, turning information into interesting audio chats. While many Spotify users can use the software, it's not available to everyone. Right now, the podcast is available in English for a limited time to both Free and Premium users in the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden. It's easy to access the podcast. Users can find it in the Wrapped feed on their Spotify homepage or the official site. From there, they can listen to, share, and download their own podcast. However, it's important to keep in mind that while the AI hosts aim to get things right, there may be some mispronunciations and incomplete details. There will likely be some issues there because the AI will be fed all the user's music history. So, some users may notice details they forgot and think they're mistakes, like songs they didn't remember listening to in 2024. There's also the case that the AI will have to pick and choose what to talk about, which could lead to missing some details. These problems might be due to the AI's limitations in accurately understanding and analyzing all the user data. This is a new feature, so mistakes are going to be made. However, this means that it will likely return next year with improvements and fixes. It's speculative, but maybe the AI can eventually become a real DJ for users who want to listen back to their favorite music. For now, while AI has advanced far, the current technology still has many limitations, so users shouldn't expect too much from the podcast. Source: Spotify, Google

Spotify Wrapped is out: How to see yours and what's new in 2024
This year's highly anticipated report features an eras-style rundown on user's music evolution, plus plenty of AI. Think you know how your year went? You may be in for a rude awakening. Spotify Wrapped 2024 waltzed into inboxes Wednesday morning, undoubtedly carrying on its arm some hard truths. Maybe you listened to 40 hours of heartbreak pop, or a whole week's worth of Taylor Swift. Perhaps you were in the top 1% of listeners for "Defying Gravity," beating out even the most ardent of theater geeks. Whatever the revelation, music streamers can delight or despair as Spotify unveils personalized data-driven reports with insights on whose music they listened to most and for how long. A capstone for the year, the release of Spotify Wrapped has become a cultural phenomenon. It offers a glimpse into "a point of reflection and a reminder of the year that's gone by," says Sulinna Ong, Spotify's Global Head of Editorial. Taylor Swift was the top global artist for the second year in a row. Here's how to access your Spotify Wrapped and what's new this year. To access your Spotify Wrapped, head to the app and find the tab labeled "wrapped" at the top which will take you to your complete personalized experience. If you're an author or podcast-maker you can access insights on your own content separately. If you're not seeing the "wrapped" option, update your app and try again. More:Spotify Wrapped is here: Update the app to get the full experience, platform says When does Spotify Wrapped stop tracking? Does it include December? We don't know - and that's on purpose. While it can be assumed that the platform does not track your December listening since it is excluded from the month-by-month report, an exact end date for data collection is not released. That's partly because the popularity of Wrapped lies in users being delightfully surprised (or horrified) by their music choices. If a specific date were given, listeners might attempt to engineer the results, tidying up any "cringey" streams that might sneak their way into the data. Spotify would rather you press play on that "Glee" cast album with abandon, or not think twice about streaming scream-singing to "MMmbop" on the car ride to work. What's new in Spotify Wrapped 2024? While some features of this year's report appear familiar, there are plenty of shiny new bells and whistles. One such feature is "Your Music Evolution," a data-driven story of the music phases you passed through over the course of the year. With up to three distinct phases, the concept feels appropriate for 2024 in which Taylor Swift broke records with her "Eras Tour" and changed the lexicon as laypeople began coining their own "eras." Like Apple Music's Replay feature, Spotify also added listening streaks to its year-end report, showing how many days straight you tuned into a certain artist. The share button also got a makeover, showing users whether the song or album they're sending is on their top-listened-to list. AI takes center stage on Spotify Wrapped Spotify entered the artificial intelligence game in 2023 with its AI DJ feature, now offered in Spanish, which curates a playlist for listeners. Now, AI DJ is integrated into Wrapped to allow premium users to search music with prompts like "find me more artists like my top listened to." This year's Wrapped also features a specialized AI podcast with a rundown on your listening habits powered by Google's Notebook LM. Spotify Wrapped stretches beyond music to podcasts, audiobooks As the skyrocketing popularity of audiobooks blurs the lines between reading and listening, Spotify opened its Wrapped umbrella to cover the trends that dominated virtual bookshelves. This year's report offers a rundown on the top authors and audiobooks consumed globally, plus a feature for authors themselves to see who tuned into their work (musicians and podcasters have access to the same feature). Podcasts have also become a must-have for streaming platforms, as people increasingly turn to the chatter of true crime sleuths, quasi-dating experts and cultural commentators for daily background noise. "Podcasts are a major force in how we communicate ideas today," Jordan Newman, the Head of Content Partnerships at Spotify, said at a briefing. From Joe Rogan to Alex Cooper, podcast hosts have become powerful pundits, and their shows are the "digital town squares where political discourse is happening," Newman says. Spotify offers a blend of video and audio, and this year's Wrapped will feature short-form videos from popular podcast hosts thanking their most loyal listeners. A "2024 in Podcasts" editorial hub will also appear on the app, with recommended listening for users in search of a new show. Spotify logo gets a makeover Wrapped is no small event and Spotify's iconic bright green logo is getting all dressed up for the occasion. As part of the launch, the streamer is debuting several new "expressive" logos that lean into punk, coquette or Western aesthetics. When does Spotify Wrapped come out? Spotify Wrapped was released Wednesday at 8 am ET Dec. 4. The accompanying physical campaign hit billboards Wednesday as well, with displays specialized to cities' streaming habits across the globe. In Mexico City, Peso Pluma graced billboards, in West Hollywood Chappell Roan's "Pink Pony Club" came to life and in New York, Manhattan got a Tinashe billboard for being the "nastiest" borough.

Spotify Wrapped 2024: How your year in music was captured by AI magic
December is here, and that means it's time for Spotify Wrapped -- the one true holiday season that music lovers look forward to all year long. With 2024 Wrapped, Spotify continues to turn a simple yearly summary into a full-blown cultural phenomenon, with a fresh dose of innovation, introspection, and a sprinkle of artificial intelligence. This year, Spotify has taken Wrapped to new heights, offering a suite of features designed to make your musical year-in-review more personal, more social, and a whole lot more fun. There's an undeniable joy that comes from reminiscing about what made up the soundtrack of your year -- those songs that captured your best days, those podcasts that got you through commutes, and those late-night playlists that set the mood. 2024 Wrapped is all about celebrating not just the music itself but also the journey you took with it. This year, Spotify celebrates fans, artists, and creators with a richer, more immersive Wrapped that turns each listener's audio journey into a uniquely tailored storytelling experience. This year, Spotify has amped up its Wrapped experience, adding several layers of personalization that elevate the fun of looking back on your listening habits. If you've been waiting to see how your taste evolved throughout the year, who you listened to the most, and how much time you spent exploring new sounds, you're in for a treat. New to Wrapped this year is the "Your Music Evolution" feature, which takes your listening habits to another level. We know your taste changes -- sometimes it's a steady drift toward new genres, and other times it's an abrupt shift that changes everything (maybe Taylor Swift's surprise tour announcement made you fall down a folk-pop rabbit hole?). This evolution of taste is something Spotify wanted to celebrate, and now it's delivered in the form of "Your Music Evolution" -- a new storytelling element that maps out your musical journey across 2024. Your "Music Evolution" feature delivers up to three musical phases that defined your year, complete with descriptors, genres, and artists that signpost your evolving moods. Alongside this, your "Music Evolution Playlist" bundles these phases into a soundtrack that's all yours -- with old favorites and new discoveries mixed into one cohesive story. Another first for Wrapped: Premium listeners in selected markets can enjoy a personalized playlist featuring music videos -- a fresh way to reconnect with the songs that soundtracked your 2024. It's a cool opportunity to re-experience the music that mattered with visuals that enhance the emotional impact. The experience also goes deeper with "Your Artist Clips," where fans get to hear from their favorite artists directly. It's a sweet touch that bridges the gap between listeners and their idols. Imagine Billie Eilish or Peso Pluma speaking directly to you, adding a personal touch to the soundtrack of your year. Wrapped 2024 goes beyond playlists and stats -- it also brings AI into the fold to enrich your experience. For the first time, Spotify offers an AI-generated podcast summarizing your Wrapped in audio form. Created in collaboration with Google's NotebookLM, this podcast features two AI hosts, providing commentary on your top songs, artists, and genres of the year. It's available to both Free and Premium users in English-speaking regions, giving a spoken-word twist to the music and artists that defined your 2024. Spotify's fan-favorite AI DJ also steps into the Wrapped spotlight. This AI DJ, available in both English and Spanish, curates a blend of music and editorial insight that highlights your journey. Imagine a DJ who knows exactly what you like, giving context to your top tracks, talking about the cultural moments that shaped them, and even describing the arc of your listening year with expert flair. One of the biggest changes to Wrapped this year is the introduction of AI Playlist prompts. This new feature lets you take your Wrapped insights to the next level by creating personalized playlists based on prompts like "my top 5 genres" or "artists similar to my top 5." It's an incredible way to push beyond what you already love and explore more -- whether it's finding new music that aligns with your core tastes or diving into something different. Spotify knows the thrill of seeing how your musical habits stack up against friends, so they've made sharing even more fun. This year, when you share music or podcast links, Spotify will show how it ranks in your listening stats -- for instance, if a song you're sharing made your top 100 songs, top 20 artists, or top five podcasts. This level of insight adds extra flavor to the share -- like saying, "Hey, this song was one of my top listens this year." Plus, thanks to Spotify's new sharing integration with TikTok, you can now post your Wrapped results directly to TikTok's feed. This means your love for "Crime Junkie" or ROSÉ's latest hit can shine on TikTok's For You Page and Stories, making Wrapped a more interactive experience than ever. This year, Spotify has rolled out personalized Wrapped microsite experiences for artists, songwriters, podcast creators, advertisers, and, for the first time, authors. Wrapped gives creators access to their own individualized analytics, showing them how fans have engaged with their work across 2024. For artists, it's a chance to understand their fanbase better and to share in the joy of seeing how their music has resonated globally. If you have a smart speaker, simply use a voice command like "Play top songs 2024" to immerse yourself in your Wrapped experience. It's the kind of accessibility that makes Wrapped even more engaging -- the ability to revisit your favorite music without lifting a finger. Spotify Wrapped has always been more than just a collection of stats. It's about memories, moments, and the unique power of music to capture how we feel at different times of our lives. Wrapped 2024 takes this idea and expands it -- not only giving you a snapshot of your year but also adding depth through artist clips, AI-generated commentary, and insights into how your tastes evolved. The evolution of Spotify Wrapped from a simple recap to a full-fledged experience speaks volumes about what listeners crave. It's not just the numbers -- it's the context, the nostalgia, the story behind the music. We all love to see that we were among the top 1% of listeners for our favorite artists, but Wrapped also gives us something more -- a narrative that turns data into a story. Wrapped 2024 is about turning listening habits into something meaningful, reminding us why we fell in love with certain songs, artists, or genres at different points in the year. So, as you dive into your Wrapped, take a moment to appreciate how this year's soundscape unfolded for you. Was there an album that perfectly captured your summer road trip? Was there a podcast that kept you sane on tough days? Music is personal, and Wrapped 2024 ensures that the way you experienced it is uniquely celebrated. And if you love what you see, don't forget to share it. Whether it's with a friend who shares your taste or just to show off that rare 0.1% badge, Spotify Wrapped is best enjoyed when it's shared. Because at its core, Wrapped is a celebration of our love for music -- and that's something we're all in together. 2024 was a year full of surprises, genre-hopping, and finding new sounds. Spotify Wrapped 2024 encapsulates all that -- with more personalization, more connection, and a lot of fun features that elevate our year-end listening. Dive into your Wrapped and experience what made 2024 your year in music. Celebrate the artists, albums, and songs that were there with you every step of the way, and see just how your story -- in playlists, podcasts, and more -- played out. And as you post it across your social feeds, remember, it's all about celebrating the music that moved us, made us think, and maybe even defined us.

Your Spotify Wrapped This Year Will Include a Personalised AI Podcast
This year, two AI hosts will discuss the user's Spotify Wrapped Spotify Wrapped has finally arrived, and it adds a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature that will showcase users' "year in audio" in a new way. This year, Spotify has partnered with Google's NotebookLM to bring its Audio Overviews feature to the music streaming platform. With this, users will be able to listen to an AI-generated audio discussion of their most played songs, top artists, time spent listening to music, and other metrics. This new showcase is now available in addition to the usual image cards highlighting the same information. In a press briefing, Spotify and Google revealed their partnership to bring a new AI feature to Spotify Wrapped's 2024 edition. The feature is powered by the NotebookLM platform, an AI-powered research and writing assistant. The platform also has an Audio Overviews feature that allows users to add text, documents, or a URL to generate engaging audio discussions between two AI hosts. This Audio Overviews feature is now being used to create personalised AI podcasts for all Spotify users in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden, the US, and the UK. Notably, the feature will be available to both free users and Spotify Premium subscribers. To listen to the AI podcast within Spotify Wrapped, users will need to go to the Wrapped feed on the music streaming app or website's home page. Alternatively, they can click here to directly go to the AI podcast's interface. On this screen, users will need to tap on "Your Wrapped AI podcast". This will open a pop-up window in which users can then listen to two AI hosts discuss their summary of in-app activity. Users can also share the AI podcast with others or download it. Notably, Spotify Wrapped was first introduced in 2016, and replaced Spotify's year-end showcase from the previous year called "Year in Music". Since then, the music streaming platform has been adding new features and introducing new interfaces for it. The annual feature is usually rolled out in late November. Spotify Wrapped shares information about users' music listening behaviour within the app. These include the time spent listening to music, the total number of artists listened to, most played music, most favourite genre, favourite artists and bands, and more.

Spotify Wrapped arrives - now with an AI podcast all about your year in music
NotebookLM teams up with Spotify to bring you more fun insights into your music tastes. Also: Google's AI podcast tool transforms your text into stunningly lifelike audio - for free The technology powering the feature is Google's NotebookLM Audio Overviews, the AI tool that has gone viral for transforming notes into engaging podcasts. To access it, visit your Wrapped feed on the Spotify homepage or visit this link and tap "Your Wrapped AI podcast." Google warns that the AI hosts may occasionally mispronounce words or not generate an in-depth overview as expected, due to the unpredictability of AI models. However, it is the first personalized podcast reflecting your year in music, and if you have never tried NotebookLM, the results may blow your mind. Other new, non-AI-related features are coming to Spotify Wrapped, such as Your Music Evolution data story, which showcases up to three musical phases that define your year in music. You will also receive a Music Evolution Playlist that can be found on the Wrapped feed on the home page. The playlist includes your musical phases throughout the year, as well as new songs that Spotify thinks you will be interested in based on your picks. Also: The best earbuds: Expert tested and reviewed To help you identify whether you are a superfan, Spotify will now show you the artist you enjoyed the most in the year with a "longest listening streak" feature that shows how many days in a row you listened to an artist. This will be shared along with the classic "Top Listeners" feature that shows what percentage of listeners you are in for your favorite artists. Lastly, Artist Clips and Podcaster Clips will offer you short messages from your favorite artists, including the top artists at the moment, such as Peso Pluma, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, and more.

What do my Spotify Wrapped stats say about my year? It was a tough one. | Opinion
2024's Spotify Wrapped has new AI features and tallies up your listening minutes. I spent 32,616 minutes listening to Spotify this year, and honestly, it saved my life. The much-anticipated 2024 Spotify Wrapped is more than just a carefully curated list of my favorite artists and songs - it's a reflection of the soundtrack that carried me through the highs and lows of the past year. The songs I played on repeat, "Too Sweet" by Hozier and "Lose Control" by Teddy Swims, weren't just background noise. They were tied to the memories I made and the emotions I've felt this year. Those songs helped me process difficult moments like the loss of a dear friend and my struggles with seasonal depression. My music on Spotify tracked with my mood Looking at my Wrapped list feels a bit like flipping through a mood tracker. Music has always influenced how I feel, and my playlists reflect that connection. Seeing these patterns makes me think about how not only music but also audiobooks and podcasts have supported me this year. Some days I depended on Spotify music to keep me going when I had no motivation to continue. On Feb. 19, I listened to Spotify for 409 minutes. That's more than a quarter of an entire day. I replay that day often in my memory. I had a therapy session that changed the way I saw the world. I didn't know how to process the new information I received during that session, so I turned to Spotify podcasts to distract me from the uncomfortable feelings I had. Even the podcasts I binged in 2024 reveal something about me. My top podcast? "The Happiness Lab"with Dr. Laurie Santos. That podcast helped me learn to find happiness in everyday life. I'm so busy chasing the extraordinary that I often miss the beauty of being present and finding joy in the little things. I normally work multiple jobs, trying to make ends meet, and when the day is over, I'm exhausted. I just want to eat junk food and wind down. Whether it's listening to a news commentary, self-help guru or a comedy podcast, what I valued in my downtime was a reflection of me in those moments - tired, sad and unfulfilled. The audiobooks I listened to mostly focused on personal development. My favorite was "The Mountain is You" by Brianna Wiest. Do I listen to Spotify to find comfort? Seeing my listening habits laid out has inspired me to think about how I use Spotify in my life. Is it my artificially intelligent companion who knows what I need to hear when I need to hear it? These are questions I am exploring as I reflect on 2024. Next year, I want to intentionally curate playlists that bring more calm and positivity into my routine. Iwant to increase my audiobook listening time and listen more to professional development books. I also want to increase my support of independent music artists, as most of my listening in 2024 was of mainstream artists. My Spotify Wrapped isn't just a reflection of the past - it's also a celebration of everything that made this year memorable. From heartbreaks to hurricanes and road trips, every moment of my life had a theme song or life lesson, and sharing it on social media helped me connect with others, making those moments even more special. You never know who might love the same artists or discover something new through you. If you haven't checked out your 2024 Spotify Wrapped list, do it. I bet you'll discover something you never knew about yourself - maybe something so profound, it will change your life.

'Spotify Wrapped' Recaps Your Listening History for 2024 Using AI Hosts
Spotify has made its annual recap feature "Spotify Wrapped" available to users on the iOS and Android app. This feature tracks your top artists, genres, songs, podcasts, and minutes listened, and generates graphics for sharing on social media. This year's Spotify Wrapped has a distinctly AI-driven twist: The company has partnered with Google to leverage its note-taking assistant NotebookLM, which can generate a podcast featuring two artificial hosts that discuss the user's research. In Spotify, the hosts wax lyrical on your top songs, artists, and genre choices for the year. "Your Wrapped AI Podcast" is available to both free and Premium users in the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden. Spotify Wrapped also now includes a feature to chart how your musical preferences evolved over the year. For each month it assigns up to three descriptive musical themes, such as "heatwave" or "beach." Additionally, the app creates a personalized "music evolution" playlist, blending your favorite tracks from the year with new songs curated to match your tastes. Meanwhile, if you're a Premium subscriber, you can create playlists based on your listening habits by prompting Spotify's AI DJ. Other additions this year include the longest listening streak for your top five artists, and an update to the share button that shows whether the audio being shared is in your top 100 songs, top 20 artists, or top five podcasts. Apple Music's equivalent annual recap, Apple Music Replay, was launched on Tuesday for subscribers to the streaming service.

The campaign, an internet sensation since its debut in 2015, has grown larger each year. In 2024, Spotify announced that Wrapped will reach fans in 184 markets worldwide. "The 2024 Wrapped design is the result of an incredible collaborative effort, and we're extremely proud of the final outcome," said Rebecca Lim, Spotify's Global Brand Design Director, in a press release. How to find your Spotify Wrapped? You should make sure your Spotify app is up to date in order to get the full Wrapped experience. What's new in this year's Spotify Wrapped? This edition introduces several new features to enhance the Spotify Wrapped experience: Spotify's "Your Wrapped AI Podcast," created in collaboration with Google's NotebookLM, generates a personalized podcast hosted by AI. The podcast discusses your top songs, artists, and genres, offering a unique recap of your musical year. "Your Music Evolution" is another feature which showcases how your musical tastes have changed over the year. Each month gets up to three descriptive phrases, such as "heatwave" or "beach," summarizing your listening trends. A personalized "music evolution" playlist summarizes your favorite songs with new recommendations aligned with your preferences. Premium users can also explore enhanced AI DJ capabilities. By prompting the AI DJ with requests like "Make me a playlist of songs that represent my music journey over the year," users receive curated playlists reflecting their annual listening habits. Other features include insights into your longest listening streak, details on whether you're among the top listeners for your favorite artists, and special video messages from artists for their top fans. Taylor Swift is Spotify Wrapped's most-streamed artist for the second year in a row With over 26.6 billion streams worldwide, Taylor Swift is Spotify's 2024 Global Top Artist. For the second consecutive year, the artist has claimed the top spot in a year where Pop stars like Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, and Sabrina Carpenter also made significant climbs on the charts. Swift also dominates Spotify's 2024 Top 10 Albums list with three entries: The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology (2024), 1989 (Taylor's Version) (2023), and Lover (2019). Taylor Swift's Spotify Wrapped Message to Fans Addressing her listeners, she thanked them for their unwavering support and for making her one of the year's top artists. Swift reflected on the journey her music has taken, from the re-recording of 1989 (Taylor's Version) to the release of The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, a project she described as deeply personal. "I just wanted to say thank you so much for being one of my top listeners on Spotify, that's so nice of you," she said at the beginning of her video message. "Um, I look back on this year and think about how special you made it for us being on the Eras Tour." Latin America Takes the Stage Globally Latin artists left their mark in 2024, with Bad Bunny, Peso Pluma, and Feid among Spotify's most-streamed artists globally. Their success alongside Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, and Drake highlights Latin America's rising influence on the global music scene. Spotify's Top 10 Most-Streamed Artists in 2024: Joe Rogan Takes the Top Spot in a Great Year for Audio Formats 2024 proved to be a landmark year for podcasting, with the medium taking center stage during the U.S. presidential election and beyond. The Joe Rogan Experience once again dominated as Spotify's most-streamed podcast globally. The year also saw podcasts diversifying their appeal, from Call Her Daddy exploring relationships and pop culture to Huberman Lab delving into neuroscience and self-improvement. True crime continued to captivate listeners, with Serial Killers and Crime Junkie maintaining their grip on fans of the genre. What If I Don't Use Spotify? As the streaming market has grown, other major platforms have developed their own versions of Wrapped in recent years, with Apple Music, Deezer and Youtube Music making their own copycats. One year away from its 10th anniversary, Apple Music has become Spotify's most significant competitor globally, with over 80 million subscribers worldwide. To cater to its users, Apple developed its own review system, rolling out its "Replay" experience in 2019. YouTube Music offers a similar end-of-year release for its listeners, along with periodic seasonal recaps throughout the year. Its annual Recap was released earlier this month. The feature also highlights your longest listening streak and the total number of minutes you've listened over the year. Here are some platforms and websites that mimic Spotify's Wrapped concept. Your Spotify Wrapped 2024 Playlist is Here and So is an AI Podcast...
We may earn a commission when you click links to retailers and purchase goods. More info. Following YouTube Music and Apple Music, Spotify is now out with their yearly recap feature. Called "Spotify Unwrapped," this is the time for Spotify users to find their top songs of the past year, see what else was trending, and live life through the past by listening to"Your Top Songs 2024'' playlist on repeat for the next month or so as we head into 2025. For this 2024 Unwrapped, Spotify has brought back familiar features, like the "Your 2024 Wrapped" that takes you through a short history lesson of your past year. This story-like experience will reveal your top song, list of top artists, how many minutes you spent listening to music, how your music tastes changed throughout the past 12 months, and where you ranked for your top artist in terms of listening time. Some of your favorite artists may even have a little video message for you to take in. Spotify has also put together several 2024 recap-style playlists with the top songs from the globe and your country, as well as top playlists for specific genres. The one I'm most looking forward to diving into is the "Your Music Evolution 2024," which I think is a new item for this year's Wrapped. The headline feature, at least according to Spotify and Google, is the "Your Wrapped AI Podcast." This feature uses Google's NotebookLM to create a podcast experience about your Spotify Wrapped. It'll probably be super silly, but this is one of Google's coolest AI features. NotebookLM can take almost any subject you might be interested in and then turn it into what ends up sounding like a real podcast with two hosts going back and forth. It's actually a wild experience outside of Spotify that I recommend giving a try. My Wrapped AI podcast is a little over 3 minutes and mostly just walks through my Wrapped slideshow. As someone who doesn't listen to any podcasts, this is not for me. But hey, so many of you love podcasts and I'm sure this will find a place in your commutes. To get Spotify Wrapped 2024, make sure you have the latest Spotify update. If you do, you should see it all by opening the app today.

Spotify Lets Users Create AI Podcast for Yearly 'Wrapped' Offering | PYMNTS.com
For Spotify users, the end of the year means the arrival of "Wrapped" season. That's when the digital audio platform offers members a statistical breakdown of their listening habits for the previous year: the artist they streamed the most, their most-listened song, the types of music they liked. This year, Spotify announced Wednesday (Dec. 5), the company is doing something different with Wrapped, thanks to an artificial intelligence (AI) partnership with Google. The collaboration lets users employ AI to craft a podcast, with two AI "hosts" from Google's NotebookLM discussing the users' year in music. "With this personalized Audio Overview, fans can immerse themselves in the top songs, artists, and genres that soundtracked their year all delivered using generative AI by two dynamic hosts," the company wrote on its blog. "From uncovering the unique ways you listened on Spotify to exploring the inspiration behind one of your favorite tracks, Your Spotify Wrapped AI podcast brings you even closer to the music that soundtracked your year." According to Google, Spotify crafted the personalized podcasts with the technology powering NotebookLM's Audio Overviews, "which transforms static information into lively audio conversations." Users can access their Wrapped podcast by going to the Wrapped feed on their Spotify homepage and tapping "Your Wrapped AI podcast" to listen. During Spotify's quarterly earnings call last month, CEO Daniel Ek noted the company's expansion of its AI-powered features, such as the AI Playlist, which uses generative AI to curate personalized playlists. Spotify last year expanded its partnership with Google Cloud to employ advanced AI tools aimed at enhancing the user experience with things like personalized recommendations, based on an analysis of spoken content, such as audiobooks and podcasts. "Spotify keeps bringing up engagement and keeps bringing down churn," Ek said. "That is the story we've been on. And whenever someone thinks we've reached a ceiling, it turns out that we're finding more ways to drive up the engagement and driving down the churn. And AI is one of those ways. We are very excited about driving our usage of Spotify up over the coming years. AI is a huge unlocking technology that can enable transformational new ways where people want to soundtrack their lives in even more ways than they've done in the past."

Spotify Wrapped 2024 is here with new exclusive AI features for personalized podcasts
Waze police reports are showing up on Google Maps for Android Auto Key Takeaways Spotify's latest addition to Wrapped is called AI Podcasts. They are available in select countries, expanding Spotify's AI-powered features. AI-generated hosts discuss users' music tastes in wrapped podcast format, using Google's NotebookLM tech. Standard Spotify Wrapped playlists and Sound Capsules remain available to all users, while Premium subscribers can use special Wrapped features in AI DJ and AI Playlists. ✕ Remove Ads It's that time again when exciting summaries of the year's events start rolling in, and plenty of casual music listeners have been looking forward to Spotify's Wrapped for 2024. As one of the most popular music players on Android, the app has billions of users worldwide, each with their own unique taste in music. Wrapped summarizes the year's listening stats into individualized playlists, but this year, Spotify has partnered with Google Labs to create custom podcasts for every user. Related Google's Audio Overview transforms your meeting notes into engaging podcasts Make everything a podcast Posts Usually, there's a very slim chance that real living radio hosts or podcasters would discuss the average Spotify user's taste in music. However, Google's NotebookLM research tool has a feature called Audio Overviews, which summarizes documents you upload in audio format. Spotify is using the same tech this year to have two AI-generated hosts discuss your Wrapped 2024 in a podcast format called Wrapped AI Podcast. This limited-time feature is the first NotebookLM collaboration of its kind. ✕ Remove Ads Source: Spotify Spotify's Senior Director of Product for Personalization, Molly Holder, says you can expect three to six minutes of AI-generated discussion about your taste in music. Although AI's unintended use of expletives and other offensive language is a bone of contention, Holder has confirmed Wrapped AI Podcasts will retain potentially offensive song titles and such, but the AI-generated voices won't use any inappropriate language. Separately, Google Labs' Head of Editorial, Steven Johnson confirmed the podcasts will use the same voices you hear in NotebookLM's Audio Overviews. Limited but convenient availability There's something for everyone Close ✕ Remove Ads Spotify Wrapped is rolling out globally today, but the new Wrapped AI Podcast feature is limited to users in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden. We believe Google could be the reason for the limited availability since the legalese surrounding AI isn't clear in every market where Spotify operates. If you're a Spotify user in one of the above countries, you'll find your Wrapped AI Podcast right on the app's home page in your Wrapped feed. You can also use the Search tab to look up "Your Wrapped AI Podcast" or use this link to open it on the web. The podcast audio is downloadable and shareable, too. It's worth noting that AI Podcasts are the third major addition to Spotify's array of AI-powered utilities, comprising AI DJ launched for Premium subscribers in February, followed by AI Playlists released in April. Premium subscribers with access to AI DJ can also enjoy the special DJ: Wrapped in beta. AI Playlist fans can create custom playlists that further narrow down Wrapped selections with prompts like "a playlist of the sad songs I heard the most this year." ✕ Remove Ads Source: Spotify That said, Spotify's standard Wrapped playlists and experiences are still available, even if you aren't in one of the above-mentioned countries or don't have a premium account. Spotify digs deep into your listening stats, to present you with an entertaining summary of your own personalized hit parade. This year there are some tasty new features. The headline is the Spotify Wrapped AI podcast, generated by Google's NotebookLM. That's right, you get to listen to Google's AI podcast hosts dissecting your music taste for a few minutes in a custom-made chat. There are also Wrapped-specific twists on Spotify's AI DJ feature and AI Playlists. You can find Spotify Wrapped 2024 now by opening up the Spotify app for Android or iOS - and we'll tell you below exactly how you can get at your recap. If it's not appearing, make sure you're updated to the latest version of the app, and keep refreshing. Spotify Wrapped 2024 is available on the web too: just point your browser at spotify.com/wrapped and you're in. Enjoy the look back at your musical year, which may include one or two surprises that you'd forgotten about. Spotify Wrapped 2024 isn't hard to find. An alert should show up when you open the app, but if not head to the Home tab inside the app for Android, iOS, iPadOS, Windows, macOS, or the web - you should see a big Wrapped 2024 banner among your mixes and recommendations like the ones above. Tap or click on that banner and your audio recap of 2024 should start on screen, in the familiar format: a social media stories-style slideshow of highlights, telling you how much listening you've done on Spotify, and the songs and artists you were most fond of. If you can't see your Spotify Wrapped 2024 yet, make sure you're using the latest version of the app. On mobile, find Spotify on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store - if an update is available, it'll say so on the listing page. On the desktop apps, click your profile picture (top right) and you'll see a prompt to install an update, if one is available. You can also just open spotify.com/wrapped inside a web browser, log into your Spotify account, and view your Wrapped 2024 data there. As you might have expected, Spotify has plugged plenty of AI into its Wrapped recap this time around. Alongside the familiar charts of the music you listened to the most, you'll also find these new features: Thanks to a little help from its friends at Google, Spotify is giving us a special AI-powered Wrapped podcast this year. This tweaked version of NotebookLM's Audio Overview feature serves up a short (three-to-six minute) podcast episode about your year in music, hosted by AI presenters. It's available to both Free and Premium users for a "limited time" in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland and Sweden. From what we've seen, the presenters are pretty positive and complementary, but we also haven't seen your music taste. To find it, go to the Spotify app's home screen and tap on the Wrapped label at the top of the screen - then tap on the 'Your Wrapped AI Podcast'. Alternatively, you can find it via search by typing in 'Your Spotify Wrapped AI podcast'. If you're a Premium subscriber, you'll be familiar with the AI DJ: the bot is able to play a mix of tunes in Spotify based on your previous listening habits, and talk you through the picks just like a radio presenter would. This feature was actually included in Spotify Wrapped 2023, but it's back and better than ever in 2024. With Wrapped 2024, the AI DJ will talk through your last 12 months of activity on Spotify - almost as if the synthetic being has been your constant companion over that time. It's an alternative way of digging into your musical past, and will include commentary based on the expert views of the human editors at Spotify too. Another Spotify Premium feature that rolled out this year was AI Playlists. The idea is that you can create playlists with simple prompts - in the same way you might get ChatGPT to generate a block of text, or get Midjourney to generate a piece of art. You just tell Spotify what you want from your playlist, and it gets to work. Once your Wrapped 2024 has appeared in Spotify, you can use the AI Playlist feature to generate new playlists from it (besides the playlist of your top 100 songs for 2024 you get anyway). For example, you can ask Spotify for "a playlist of my top genres" or "artists similar to my top five". Last year, Spotify was big on pairing you with your musical twin city with Sound Town, but this time around it's more into seasons. The new 'Your Music Evolution' feature sums up how our music taste has varied according to the time of year. The feature splits your year into three musical phases, which are named in Spotify's typically new-age style - for example, 'Atmospheric Ritual Ambient' and 'Pumpkin Spice Hollywood Indie' (we're not quite sure what that means). Still, it's a fun feature that's for both free and Premium subscribers - and it's also turned into a personalized playlist that you can find in the Wrapped feed from the app's Home tab.

The Cringe-Factor Is High With Spotify's Wrapped AI Podcast
NotebookLM is the brains behind the personalized podcast and it doesn't mind butchering other languages. It's the moment everyone's been waiting for all year: Spotify Wrapped time. Though it launched later than initially anticipated, the annual personalized wrap-up is available for subscribers to see where their music tastes landed for the year. What's also available is a customized podcast courtesy of Google's NotebookLM, featuring two AI hosts who struggle to pronounce any song or artist that is not of the Anglo-Saxon variety. Artificial intelligence isn't perfect. Even with the most convincing demonstrations at developer conferences, AI text-to-speech always sounds slightly forced compared to how humans talk. The best example is Spotify's Wrapped AI podcast, which resembles Google's demonstration earlier this year at Google I/O. The hosts are certainly convincing, but the longer you listen to the synthetically concocted podcast, the more obvious it becomes that you're listening to a pair of robots recapping your listening stats. The AI-produced podcast starts standard. It sounds like me and my podcasting partner on an episode of our show. First, the hosts highlight the longest day you listened to Spotify during the year. It picked up on a particularly emotional day when I was listening to hours of sad music. The AI hosts safely wondered aloud if it was because I was on a road trip that day. (I wasn't. I was crying!) This is an opportunity where the AI could have scaled back on making assumptions. Like a friend who isn't thinking about the impact of their words, the AI triggered me to harken back to a day of significant discomfort. Rude behavior! Then, the AI hosts read off your most-played artists and songs of the year. I would still prefer to hear an actual, live human attempt to pronounce the name of my favorite Dutch artist, Joost Klein, than Google's NotebookLM. His name is pronounced "Yost," but the podcast instead refers to him as "juiced." It's even worse when they try to pronounce the Dutch songs. My most played song this year is called "Wachtmuziek," and Google's NotebookLM hosts pronounce it exactly as you might attempt to read it as a non-Dutch speaker, without the hawk-tuah that's enunciated with the "cht". Spanish speakers will also find that Google's NotebookLM struggles with the Latin language. My editor shared his personalized podcast with me, and I cringe whenever they attempt to identify a song by Bad Bunny. Don't get me started on the butchered pronunciation of "ray-gay-ton," which is not how reggaeton is said out loud. I would argue that uttering the word with the appropriate intonation is the genre. The cringe factor is high with this one. This leads me to ask: Isn't this something AI should pick up on? The music is categorized under the language in which it is presented. I imagine a bot could be programmed to pull in from that data and adjust accordingly. To the credit of its developers, Google covered its bases by mentioning that its AI hosts occasionally mispronounce words. But it takes the magic out of the AI when you realize the bot is just as flawed at failing to practice pronunciation as the rest of us. Spotify's Wrapped AI podcast with Google prowess is available for Free and Premium users in the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden for a limited time.

Spotify Wrapped 2024: how to find your stats and the new Creator Wrapped
Table of Contents Table of Contents How to find your Spotify Wrapped stats Spotify Wrapped 2024's top performers There's something immensely satisfying about looking at a year's worth of listening condensed down to a neatly packaged presentation. We're now able to get this from a few different streaming services -- yesterday saw the release of both Apple Music Replay 2024 and the first time Amazon has gotten into the game with Amazon Music Delivered 2024. Spotify, though, has been doing it for almost a decade, and today we get this year's iteration of Spotify Wrapped 2024. A similar program started in 2015 under the name "Year in Music," was rebranded as Wrapped in 2016, and has been going strong and growing ever since. For 2024, Spotify is adding a new way to feed you all your streaming info -- an AI podcast. You can still get your streaming info as you have in the past, as a series of Instagram-style story cards scrolling to your favorite tunes of the year, you can also get that information presented to you by two AI-generated podcasters. The new feature, called Your Wrapped AI Podcast, is powered by Google's NotebookLM. Recommended Videos This isn't Spotify's first foray into the world of AI, having piloted a podcast translation feature last year that cloned podcasters' voices to offer podcasts in other languages, as well as AI DJ. For those of us who want to get our yearly recap on the go, getting to listen to it instead of needing to read through the stats is an interesting proposition. In addition to the story cards and the AI podcast, this year Spotify is introducing Your Podcaster Clips, where podcast fans will be able to see end-of-year messages from the top podcasters on Spotify thanking their listeners. There's also a "2024 in Podcasts" hub that will have a slew of other stats and roundups for Spotify podcasts. The experience extends beyond regular Spotify listeners, with Creator Wrapped. Artists, creators, and authors get their own stories to help them celebrate their year through Wrapped for Artists, Wrapped for Creators, and the brand new Wrapped for Authors. They'll be able to see information about all aspects of fan engagement. Wrapped for Creators is adding eight different personality classifications, similar to what we saw premiere with Listening Personalities in Spotify Wrapped 2022, as well as insight into listener tastes, age, and what other things they're listening to. How to find your Spotify Wrapped stats Getting to your Spotify Wrapped 2024 stats is a pretty straightforward process, as you'd expect considering it's a major yearly Spotify feature. Open up the app on your device -- be it Android or Apple -- and you'll be greeted with a Spotify Wrapped 2024 screen on Home that you can click to open your personalized experience. From there you can check out your story cards or listen to your AI podcast about you Spotify year. It's only possible to view the Wrapped experience in the mobile app (either on iOS or Android). Spotify Wrapped 2024: your year in songs and podcasts is here
The long-awaited Spotify Wrapped is back, now with a recap of the songs and podcasts you listened to most in 2024. This year, in addition to a new design, Spotify has also added some AI-based features to make the Wrapped experience even more personal. Read on as we detail what's new and how you can access your Spotify Wrapped. For those unfamiliar, Spotify Wrapped is Spotify's traditional annual recap - similar to Apple Music Replay, which had its 2024 edition released yesterday. With Wrapped, users can revisit their year with information about their favorite songs, albums, artists and even podcasts. This year, Spotify Wrapped comes with some new features. For example, new data reveals up to three musical phases that define your year based on the genres and artists you've listened to the most. You'll also find your musical evolution organized in a new playlist that combines both familiar songs along with new suggested songs related to your musical phases. This year's Wrapped will show a "Longest Listening Streak" for the artists you liked the most in addition to the "Top Listeners" which reveals what percentage of listeners you're in for your favorite artist. For the first time, Spofity will also generate a playlist of your most-watched music videos in the markets where they're available. Wrapped will also include short messages from artists like ROSÉ, Billie Eilish and Sabrina Carpenter. In partnership with Google, Spotify is also bringing AI-based features to this year's Wrapped. Users will find an AI chatbot to create personalized playlists using their Wrapped data. Where available, an AI DJ will provide commentary on your year using your favorite songs as a soundtrack. Moreover, Spotify will generate a podcast about your 2024 Wrapped, all using AI (only available in selected regions). Along with the 2024 Wrapped, Spotify also unveiled today its global list of the artists and songs most listened to by its subscribers during the year. Taylor Swift was the artist with the most streams on Spotify during 2024, but Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso" took the top spot as the most played song of the year. Make sure you have the latest version of the Spotify app installed on your device to access Wrapped 2024. Spotify for iPhone and iPad is available for free on the App Store.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 launches with AI Podcast powered by Google's NotebookLM
Spotify Wrapped 2024 is here and features an AI Podcast that's "Built with Google's NotebookLM." Two AI hosts from the viral note-taking/research tool "unwrap" your year in music. While Audio Overviews in NotebookLM use your uploaded documents to create a mini podcast, this Spotify version has a discussion about your listening history, including favorite songs, artists, and the "way your music taste evolved throughout 2024." It's an engaging conversation all about your musical tastes, and each one is unique, generated just for you. Google says it "had a lot of fun making these with Spotify." This experience is co-branded, with the two company logos appearing side-by-side throughout. To access, go to the "Wrapped" feed in Spotify's Home tab on Android or iOS. "Your Wrapped AI Podcasts" appears near the top of the screen alongside Your Wrapped, Top Songs, and more. (Alternatively, you can visit: spotify.com/wrappedAIpodcast.) You will then find a player to listen to it, with Spotify notably showing a "Try NotebookLM" link. The AI Podcast can be shared and downloaded directly to your device, which you might want to do now as it's only available for a limited time. Compared to other applications of generative AI, the accuracy stakes here are lower, but Google advises that "our AI hosts may occasionally mispronounce words and don't always provide a comprehensive overview." The Spotify Wrapped AI podcast is available in English for eligible Free and Premium users in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden. Meanwhile, Spotify's AI DJ and AI Playlist are available in Wrapped. The latter lets you generate "a playlist of my top genres" or "artists similar to my top 5." Google previewed Audio Overviews at I/O 2024 and launched them in September to turn your documents, slides, and charts into an audio discussion. They've been a viral hit for their authenticity. In October, NotebookLM added the ability to "Customize" the mini podcast that's generated by specifying what topics to focus on or the expertise level.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 is Here, This Time With Google's AI Hosts
The feature is available in English for free and premium users in select regions, including the US, UK, and Australia. The wait is finally over as the much-awaited Spotify Wrapped has dropped like we predicted. But this time, the company has a special surprise in store for us. This year, you won't be exploring your year in music all by yourself. Yes, there will be a couple of AI podcast hosts powered by Google's Notebook who will join you to unravel your musical journey. Spotify has partnered with Google this year for their Wrapped. It uses an audio overview feature that we first saw introduced with Notebook LM back in September. In a recent blog post, Spotify shared "Fans can immerse themselves in the top songs, artists, and genres that soundtracked their year, all delivered using generative AI by two dynamic hosts". To get your AI Wrapped, head over to the Spotify app, then go to the Wrapped feed, and tap on Your Spotify Wrapped AI podcast. The best part is that this feature isn't exclusive to premium subscribers. Even users with a free tier account can enjoy their 2024 Wrapped with Google's AI co-hosts. The only bummer is that it is available for select few regions. As Spotify mentioned, "Your Spotify Wrapped AI podcast will be available in English for eligible Free and Premium users for a limited time across the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Sweden". I personally loved this feature and felt that it went under the radar of most people. Google did a solid by partnering with Spotify for Wrapped and thus deserves this limelight. So how did you like your AI-powered Spotify Wrapped for 2024? Let us know in the comments below.

Spotify Wrapped is out. Here's who topped the 2024 streaming charts
Spotify Wrapped 2024 is out, giving hundreds of millions of users the ability to see their most-played songs and artists over the course of the year. The annual report, which allows users to compare their music listening habits with other fans around the world, on Wednesday began rolling out to all users on the streaming platform. This year, Spotify added additional artificial intelligence features to enhance individual users' Wrapped experiences, including personalized AI podcasts about users' music listening histories, a feature powered by Google's NotebookLM and stemming from an expanded partnership between the two companies. Last month, Spotify reported earnings that included optimistic profit guidance for the fourth quarter, despite missing analysts' third-quarter targets for both revenue and earnings per share. The company also said it had about 640 million monthly active users on the platform, which slightly surpassed analyst expectations. Taylor Swift is Spotify's Global Top Artist for the second year in a row, dominating the most-streamed global albums chart with "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology," and Sabrina Carpenter's hit song "Espresso" is the most-streamed song both globally and nationally. Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" skyrocketed to second-most-streamed song in the country this year. Drake, Lamar's opponent in a renewed public rap battle earlier this spring, surged on the most-streamed artists' list, while Lamar ended up in seventh place on that list. Most-streamed artists in the United States "The Joe Rogan Experience," which hosted President-elect Donald Trump in October, took the No. 1 spot for top podcasts worldwide. "Call Her Daddy," which hosted Vice President Kamala Harris that same month, took second place. Both appearances represented a distinct shift in presidential campaigning strategies toward non-legacy-media outlets, reaching millions of weekly listeners.

Spotify's annual Wrapped feature for 2024 faces criticism from users for its heavy reliance on AI and lack of traditional personalized statistics, marking a departure from previous years' popular formats.
Spotify's highly anticipated annual feature, Spotify Wrapped, has faced significant backlash from users following its release on December 4, 2024. The music streaming giant's attempt to innovate with AI-driven features has left many subscribers feeling underwhelmed and disappointed 123.
This year's Wrapped introduced several new elements, most notably an AI-powered podcast feature. Developed in partnership with Google NotebookLM, this feature creates a personalized podcast discussing the user's year in music 13. However, the reception has been mixed, with some users finding it impressive while others expressed unease or disappointment 3.
Many users have criticized the lack of traditional, popular features from previous years:
The heavy focus on AI has been a point of contention. While Spotify aimed to create more personalized experiences, many users felt it resulted in a lack of personality and joy 1. René Sultan, a former Spotify machine learning engineer, explained that the company leveraged technologies like GoogleLM and OpenAI to create these tailored experiences 1.
Users have noted a stark contrast between Wrapped 2024 and its predecessors. Popular features from previous years, such as "Sound Town" and "Me in 2023," were notably absent 5. The new "Your Music Evolution" feature, which attempted to describe changes in musical tastes throughout the year, was met with mixed reactions 25.
Some users have speculated that Spotify's recent layoffs, which affected 2,300 employees in 2023, may have impacted the quality of this year's Wrapped 3. CEO Daniel Ek had previously acknowledged that these layoffs affected day-to-day operations more than expected 3.
Spotify has remained tight-lipped about the decision-making process behind this year's Wrapped features. When asked for comment, the company simply stated, "Every year we look to bring a new and exciting experience to Wrapped for listeners. It's part of the secret sauce of Wrapped" 3.
As user disappointment spreads across social media platforms, Spotify may need to reevaluate its approach for future Wrapped releases. With competing music services like YouTube Music and Amazon Music offering their own year-in-review features, Spotify faces pressure to maintain its edge in this annual tradition that has become a cultural phenomenon 45.
