Stardock's DesktopGPT brings your favorite LLMs straight to your desktop
Stardock is adding a new app to its portfolio of Windows tools today, and this time, it's all about AI. The new app is DesktopGPT, and as you can probably infer, it's an app that lets you use OpenAI's GPT models, such as GPT-4o Mini and GPT-4 Turbo, directly from your desktop, while also making it easier to get the responses you want. ā Remove Ads Related How to integrate ChatGPT into your Windows experience ChatGPT can be an incredibly useful tool, so why not make it easier to access right on Windows 11? How DesktopGPT works Image credit: Stardock Simply put, DesktopGPT is a search bar that you can bring up at any time over your Windows 11 desktop, providing you quick access to large language models such as those form OpenAI. In this search bar, you can type in any query and get the response from the model as you normally would, just without having to open the ChatGPT website. ā Remove Ads The big distinction comes from the fact that the app is designed to speed up the process. DesktopGPT includes templates, quick actions you can trigger that give the GPT models detailed commands that specifically target the kind of response you want. For example, the Reflect template asks the model to carefully consider the pros and cons in a given scenario, and provide a detailed analysis of both sides. What's more, you can create your own templates or modify existing ones to specifically get a certain kind of answer. Templates are quick commands that send longer inputs to the model, making it easier to perfect the responses you get. For example, you can ask the model to make a response longer, or make it sound more professional. You can also ask it to explain something for you. ā Remove Ads Image credit: Stardock DesktopGPT is available now DesktopGPT is available starting today as part of the Object Desktop suite from Stardock. The app comes at no additional cost to subscribers. However, unlike other Stardock apps, there are currently no plans to offer the app as a standalone release. If you want access to DesktopGPT, you need to subscribe to Object Desktop. DesktopGPT Leaves Beta, Puts ChatGPT on Your Windows Desktop
ChatGPT isn't as useful when it's confined to a web browser and a simple chatbox. Stardock's DesktopGPT app brings the chatbot to your Windows desktop, and it's now out of beta. ā Remove Ads Stardock has just announced the final rollout of DesktopGPT, a new desktop app that makes it pretty easy to use generative AI on Windows 10 and 11. We've reported on DesktopGPT a few times now, but it was technically pre-release software and is only available through Object Desktop rather than standalone. It's still available through Object Desktop and we'll need to wait a bit for a standalone version, but now, we have the very first stable version of it. DesktopGPT provides a user-friendly interface for interacting with various large language models (LLMs), including GPT-4 Mini and GPT-4 Turbo, right from your desktop. Just boot your PC up, wait for the widget to load, and fire up your inquiry. ā Remove Ads One of the key features of DesktopGPT is its powerful template system. These templates allow users to quickly and easily perform a variety of tasks, such as translating text, writing cover letters, and generating email subject lines. You can also create your own templates or edit existing ones to suit your individual needs. "DesktopGPT is the evolution of a tool that we were using internally at Stardock to help us be more effective with our AI interactions," said Brad Sams, General Manager of Stardock Software. "And at the heart of DesktopGPT are templates that are a powerful way to streamline your repetitive tasks." DesktopGPT is designed to be a keyboard-first experience, making it quick and easy to interact with AI models. It is also built to be flexible and adaptable. It's just an LLM, meaning that it won't integrate with your PC or perform actions for you -- you'd use this exactly the way you use ChatGPT on a browser. Having AI help us with actual features in our computers is not something that's possible today, not even through Microsoft's own Copilot integration, but if we ever get there, it probably won't be through this. ā Remove Ads You can get DesktopGPT from Stardock's website. It's only available as part of the Object Desktop package, which costs $39.99 per year. Source: Stardock

Stardock releases DesktopGPT 1.0, a Windows application that integrates OpenAI's language models directly into the desktop environment, offering quick access and customizable templates for AI interactions.
Stardock, a renowned developer of Windows customization tools, has officially launched DesktopGPT 1.0, a groundbreaking application that brings the power of large language models (LLMs) directly to Windows desktops. This release marks a significant step in making AI more accessible and integrated into daily computing tasks 1.
DesktopGPT functions as a search bar that can be summoned at any time over the Windows 11 desktop, providing quick access to AI models such as GPT-4 Mini and GPT-4 Turbo. This integration eliminates the need to open a web browser to interact with ChatGPT, streamlining the user experience 1.
A standout feature of DesktopGPT is its template system. Users can leverage pre-designed templates or create their own to trigger specific types of AI responses. For instance, the "Reflect" template prompts the AI to consider pros and cons in a given scenario. Additionally, the app includes response modifiers, allowing users to refine AI outputs by requesting longer, more professional, or more detailed explanations 1 2.
DesktopGPT is designed with a keyboard-first approach, enabling swift interactions with AI models. This design choice enhances productivity by reducing the time needed to access and utilize AI assistance 2.
Currently, DesktopGPT is available exclusively as part of Stardock's Object Desktop suite, which is priced at $39.99 per year. The suite includes other popular Windows customization tools like Start11 v2 and Fences. While there are no immediate plans for a standalone release, Stardock may consider this option in the future 1 2.
It's important to note that DesktopGPT, like other current AI integrations, does not have direct control over computer functions. It serves as an interface for LLMs rather than a system-wide AI assistant. However, as AI technology advances, deeper integration with operating systems may become possible in the future 2.
The release of DesktopGPT reflects a growing trend of bringing AI capabilities closer to end-users in familiar computing environments. As Brad Sams, General Manager of Stardock Software, explained, "DesktopGPT is the evolution of a tool that we were using internally at Stardock to help us be more effective with our AI interactions." This development could potentially inspire other software companies to create similar AI-integrated tools for desktop environments 2.
