In a significant move to bolster India's AI capabilities, upGrad, a leading integrated learning company, has partnered with the Maharashtra government to establish AI excellence centers across the state. The initiative, announced at Davos 2025, comes with an initial investment of INR 2,150 crore ($248.82 million) and aims to position Maharashtra as a global hub for AI talent 12.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and upGrad cofounder Ronnie Screwvala. The partnership encompasses several key initiatives:

  1. AI Excellence Centers: upGrad will establish these centers across Maharashtra to equip over 1 million students with skills in AI and emerging technologies 2.

ATLAS SkillTech University, supported by upGrad, will play a crucial role in this partnership:

  • Creating hybrid programs in design, digital transformation, AI, and gaming under the Maharashtra State University of Eminence initiative 1.
