Google begins rolling out AI search in YouTube
Over the past year, Google has transformed its web search experience with AI, driving toward a zero-click experience. Now, the same AI focus is coming to YouTube, and Premium subscribers can get a preview of the new search regime. Select searches on the video platform will now produce an AI-generated results carousel with a collection of relevant videos. Even if you don't pay for YouTube, AI is still coming for you with an expansion of Google's video chatbot. Google says the new AI search feature, which appears at the top of the results page, will include multiple videos, along with an AI summary of each. You can tap the video thumbnails to begin playing them right from the carousel. The summary is intended to extract the information most relevant to your search query, so you may not even have to watch the videos. The AI results carousel is only a test right now, and it's limited to YouTube Premium subscribers. If you're paying for Premium, you can enable the feature on YouTube's experimental page. While the feature is entirely opt-in, that probably won't last long. Like AI Overviews in search, this feature will take precedence over organic search results and get people interacting with Google's AI, and that's the driving force behind most of the company's decisions lately. It's not hard to see where this feature could lead because we've seen the same thing play out in general web search. By putting AI-generated content at the top of search results, Google will reduce the number of videos people click to watch. The carousel gives you the relevant parts of the video along with a summary, but the video page is another tap away. Rather than opening videos, commenting, subscribing, and otherwise interacting with creators, some users will just peruse the AI carousel. That could make it harder for channels to grow and earn revenue from their content -- the same content Google will feed into Gemini to generate the AI carousel.

The new feature is pretty similar to Google's AI Overviews, the tool that provides AI-generated summaries of search results at the top of the Google Search results page. While the AI-powered search results carousel will ease discovery for users, it could be an unwelcome change for creators, as they rely on engagement to earn revenue on the platform. For instance, if a person is able to get the information they need directly from the AI-powered search results carousel, they may not feel the need to click into the video. The launch of the AI-powered search results carousel comes two weeks after a Wall Street Journal report revealed that Google's AI Overviews and other AI-powered tools are devastating traffic for news publishers. YouTube will be rolling out a new AI-powered search tool, it said in a statement on Thursday. The carousel will suggest videos from YouTube creators. It will highlight video clips based on your search, and share descriptions and videos based on your search request. Premium members can test it now. A release date for other users is yet to be announced. YouTube shared its conversational AI tool in Nov. 2023, and first made it available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the US on Android devices. Soon, some non-premium users will have access to it. The conversational AI tool answers questions and suggests content with the Ask icon at the bottom of the video. The Ask about this video prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen for you to choose from select prompts or ask questions about the video while continuing to play your content without interruption. YouTube's statement said to expect this tool in the coming days.

The curated carousel appears in the Highlights tab at the top of search results, similar to AI Overviews in Google Search. Each thumbnail will be linked to its own AI-generated headline and summary. You can view one overview at a time, and you can swipe through the thumbnails to view the descriptions of the other clips. A video player at the top will automatically play carousel clips in order from left to right. To skip to a different clip, tap the corresponding thumbnail. To watch the full video, tap the video on the player. Once you get to the original video, the playback will begin from where you left off in the Highlights tab. The feature is now available for YouTube Premium subscribers in the US, but YouTube warns it may not work for each shopping, travel, or things-to-do query. YouTube is also expanding the test of its "conversational AI tool" to non-Premium users in the US. Introduced in 2023, the feature appears in the form of an "Ask" button beneath select videos. The tide rises, the sun sets, and Google pushes AI summaries onto yet another product. This time, it's YouTube that's getting the AI Overview treatment. The new feature will add "carousels" of clips that AI determines are relevant to the top of certain searches. For now, the feature is only available to a very (very) narrow set of users. It's a similar feature to the one you've probably seen in Google Search. Typically, if Google finds a YouTube video with a relevant portion to your search, it will present a highlighted clip that you can watch without leaving Google itself. These new YouTube AI carousels are populated with many of these relevant clips, and are paired with generative AI text summaries of the clips. Currently, AI-powered carousels are an experimental feature, only available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States, and only when you use search on an Android or iOS mobile device. If you want to enable them, follow these steps: Even if you follow all of these steps, however, you still might not see the new feature. I've been a YouTube Premium subscriber since it was called YouTube Red, enabled this experiment, and tried the example searches (plus many more) and never saw the carousel once. YouTube says the feature is only available to a "randomly selected number of Premium members" so it seems there's no guarantee you'll get to try it out even if you opt in. If you don't want this feature, the good news is that you don't have to do anything for now. This experimental trial will last until July 30. While that doesn't necessarily mean that it will roll out more widely after that, it's a safe bet that you've at least got another month before it becomes something you have to opt out of.
