To start, I was asked to enter a few of my favorite bands and artists and select a genre for my track. SongStarter immediately generated three tunes, including a relaxed R&B groove with swinging 8th notes on the hi-hats that would make a solid foundation for a complete track. I selected it and clicked Edit in Studio, which brought up an online audio editor with individual tracks for the melody, chords, bass, and drums. From within SongStarter's audio editor, you can record vocals, adjust levels, add effects like reverb, and fine-tune your composition. In testing, I prompted ChatGPT to write song lyrics about Van Gogh's Sunflowers using an AABA structure. While these lyrics looked uninspiring to me, most lyrics do when unaccompanied, and they could quickly form the basis of a convincing song with some further editing. I also asked the AI to write a melody over the chords Am7, D9, G11, and Am7. Surprisingly, it wrote a simple melody in guitar tablature, which would have translated well as a vocal line. ChatGPT can also assist you in overcoming creative blocks. If you're stuck in the middle of a song, you can ask the AI for suggestions on how to move forward. Next, I tried the more complex prompt, "Write a space-themed song with sci-fi elements and an intergalactic feel," which I felt worked well as incidental music that would suit various forms of media. What sets CassetteAI apart is its ability to convincingly compose entire songs and its use of various "Finetuned" models that work to different genres. You can also input multiple parameters, such as the song's genre, tempo, and desired mood, with the click of a button. I've been using this free AI song maker to create tracks -- and the quality is surprisingly good

Yet another open source project threatens big commercial AI ambition The AI music generation arena has been one of the few stable parts of the AI revolution over the past two years. The two dominant companies, Suno and Udio, have both established a well-deserved reputation and fanbase in the niche. However this cosy status quo may be about to change dramatically. A new music generation platform called YuE, has just dropped, and it's free, open source and produces surprisingly good music tracks. YuE, which means 'music' and 'happiness' in Chinese, is actually a group of models which work together to deliver full songs. The models cover lyrical production, instruments and genre. As with many of these new Chinese AI models, the open nature of YuE has encouraged a lot of homebrew development -- mostly to to reduce the computing requirement so more people can take advantage of the tool. The original project required a minimum of 24GB of video RAM, and the official recommendation to create full songs still remains set at 80GB. This is clearly way out of reach for normal home users, and is aimed at professionals, business and academia. The good news is a lot of effort has been done to create smaller packages for the masses, including work done by the popular Pinokio platform, which lets anyone quickly and easily run open-source AI projects on Windows. The trade-off with these small VRAM versions is the fact that the audio quality is definitely degraded, and generation times can be glacially slow. Even using Pinokio the baseline VRAM requirement at 12GB was out of reach of all but the most powerful computers. However an enterprising user recently introduced a new super low memory version, which opened the door for me to jump in and have a play around using my paltry 8GB RTX GPU system. Here's what I made: The first impression is of a very competent Gradio user interface. On the left side of the screen is the prompt box, below is a lyrics box for you to enter your words, and then the number of tracks you want to generate. It's also possible to set the amount of RAM you want to use, which is tied to the length of the song and the number of verses. Press the generate button and sit back and wait while the platform generates the track. The developers claim that with a 16GB VRAM GPU, a one minute track will only take four minutes to create. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to scale downwards, because with my 8GB it took 2 to 2.5 hours each to produce two tracks of 40 and 50 seconds. But what amazing tracks they are. They may be short, and the audio quality may not be premium level, but the musicality is incredible. The last time I tested AI music generation on my computer it sounded like a dirty arcade console from the '90s. This is real music, with accurate prompt adherence, great vocals and the kind of instrumentation you'd expect from from a commercial AI service. You can hear more results embedded here on SoundCloud: So this project is still extremely rough and ready, and the computing resources you need are ridiculous. Even if you have a decent computer, you'll spend a lot of time waiting for tracks to appear. But -- and it is a big "but" -- despite all of these drawbacks, this is an incredible first attempt to produce an open product in this sector. If this is the type of quality that open source AI music generation can produce now, it's not going to be long before the commercial services like Udio and Suno start to feel real heat from the DIY community.

As content creators continue to flood publishing platforms with thousands of audio-visual media by the minute, song selections in 2025 are sometimes more about utility than taste. Artificial intelligence tool Riffusion, which launched in beta in January 2025, is an off-shoot from the Stable Diffusion team that creates products that allow you to generate still images and video from simple text prompts. Riffusion takes that concept and applies it to song, potentially making the painstaking work of sourcing and selecting royalty-free tracks for content creation, for example, more fun. Getting started with Riffusion is fairly simple. A standard sign-up requires either an email or linking the account to another form of authentication, like a Google account. After that, aspiring song creators can generate full-length music, either with or without lyrics, with a single text prompt. I put the tool into the hands of two student content creators and asked them to generate some tracks, then judge them based on how much they liked the music, how likely they were to listen to the songs again and whether they could see themselves generating bespoke pieces for their YouTube channel content. Here's the lowdown on, and how to get the most out of, tools like Riffusion, and what my student content creators thought about the AI songs they were able to create. Like many text-to-generate-media-product AI tools, Riffusion riffs on whatever prompt you give it. A simple request to generate a background track for a podcast about surfers gives the tool a lot of latitude with sound. If you want a track that sounds a very specific way or features specific instruments, include those details in the prompt or prepare for some impromptu elements to make their way into the work. For example, one of the students prompted the AI tool to create a "diss track about a baby with a gritty British rapper with prominent cowbell and jazz flute," while the other asked for "background music for a podcast about surfers." Adding specific instrumental notes, like soft jazz flute and more cowbell, or instructions for the vocalist, like breathy vibrato or gritty British grunge, produces music that's pretty close to what you might be looking for. You can also make precise edits to sections of generated songs with the Remix option if you like the overall track but want to tweak things like sound and length or pump up the volume on the "weirdness" metric for a more creative take. Student content creators called the tracks they generated with Riffusion boring and soulless, taking on a hollow feel in the instrumentals, vocals and lyrics. None of the pieces they generated merited a second listen, they said, so there's no threat yet of tools like Riffusion taking the place of your favorite artists on the Billboard 100. The consensus from the student content creators was that Riffusion is great for creating background music for videos or theme songs for things like podcasts, but vocalists spitting hot fire on the mic or generating notes that bring grown men to tears are not in the cards for this music-making AI tool.
