Midjourney is now open to all, with the Midjourney website available for anyone to use, regardless of whether they're new or existing users. And if you sign up quickly, you can even grab a limited-time free trial to create AI art.
Midjourney Is Now Available to All Without Discord
For most of its life, Midjourney has been confined to Discord, with everyone interested in the AI art generator needing to sign up to use Discord before being able to use Midjourney. This was considered the beta version of the AI image-generating software.
In December 2023, as reported by VentureBeat, Midjourney launched an alpha website. However, the company initially limited access to existing users who had created 10,000 or more images. Which meant the vast majority of people were locked out of using it.
Now, the Midjourney website is available to anyone who wants to use it. Even new users who are only now signing up to use it. And you don't need to go through Discord in order to give it a go.
You can still sign up through Discord, but you don't have to, with Google now an option. And if you're quick, Midjourney will even let you create some images for free without needing to pay for the privilege.
Free Trials Are Available to Those Who Sign Up Quickly
I used my Google account to sign up, and was immediately granted access and 25 free images to create. Which, given that I have wanted to try Midjourney since first hearing about it, is a huge bonus.
I was then able to start creating AI art to my heart's content (at least temporarily) with a series of prompts. The results were extremely impressive, especially with some tinkering. So I can understand why so many people like using Midjourney to create AI art, and get sucked into paying for the privilege.
Other AI Image Generators Are Available (and Free)
It's great that Midjourney is now available to anyone who wants to use it. And if you can sign up to start using it while the free trial is available, you won't even have to pay.
However, the problem Midjourney faces, and likely the reason access is being opened up in this way, is the level of competition that exists. Not only are there plenty of other AI art generators available, many are free to use. And while they may not be as powerful as Midjourney, free is hard to beat.
Still, if you can nab the free Midjourney trial while it's available, you may as well do so. You'll have to be quick though, as Midjourney is making it clear that this is a temporary offer.
