Since Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop are such strong leaders in the photo-editing space, can Aperty compete against these giants with its new features?

How Skylum's Aperty compares with Adobe Lightroom
There's a new photo-editing tool on the block
Adobe Lightroom has been around since 2007 and has progressed by leaps and bounds, bringing accessible photography editing to the forefront globally for Adobe users and photographers.

Skylum is a bit newer to the game, having launched its first Luminar product in 2016, and it has since offered multiple photo-editing tools in the form of Luminar AI, Luminar Neo, and Luminar for iPad. However, its latest tool, Aperty, is the only Skylum tool that focuses solely on editing portrait photography. Aperty was developed alongside professional portrait photographer, Julia Trotti. This partnership lets Skylum use the background and technical knowledge from its prior software, combined with gains from Trotti's knowledge and background as a photographer.
Let's consider a direct comparison between the market leader, Lightroom, and the new kid on the block, Aperty.

While you can edit any type of photo with Lightroom, using many of its various tools to enhance your photography, Aperty's sole focus is on portrait photography. This choice for niche photo editing means that its tools are more likely to be relevant for you when it comes to editing. There will be fewer redundant tools, and every tool or feature within Aperty has been considered with portrait photographers' needs in mind.

Aperty works as a Lightroom and Photoshop plugin
It's more than just a standalone tool
Close
If you don't want to get rid of your Lightroom workflow, then Aperty can be used as a plugin within Lightroom directly, as well as a standalone tool. Lightroom isn't the only plugin Aperty has -- it's also offered as a Photoshop and Apple Photos plugin. The plugin allows you to edit your Lightroom, Photoshop, or Apple Photos photos in Aperty before returning.

You can use Aperty as a standalone app for both Mac and Windows systems. Each Aperty license is good for two seats. From the launch of Aperty in November 2024, additional seats (beyond two devices) can only be obtained via an additional license, but that should change to become more flexible in the near future.
Are Aperty's AI features overkill?
AI reliance might be overrated
One potential negative aspect about using Aperty is its reliance on AI. If Luminar Neo is anything to go by, then each and every tool will require AI to work. That doesn't have to be a bad thing, but for many, this could be less than desirable.
Unlike Luminar Neo, which has lots of generative AI features where the user is closely involved in the process, Aperty's AI is made up of neural networks plugging away behind the scenes. Although Aperty similarly uses AI, it can often be harder for the user to tell which aspects are using AI or not.

Aperty isn't as slow as Skylum's predecessor software, so the AI features don't feel as heavy to use. Their results are subtle, with no obvious AI use easily identified, which is good.
For the many people who are looking to steer away from AI, then Aperty likely isn't for you. But if you're questioning how AI can benefit your photography, then you should consider trying out this new software. It feels like a mix of traditional editing software and overdone AI features, though they're less obvious in Aperty, even if the results have used AI.

If AI usage is a reason for you to steer away from Aperty's fabulous new program, then you should similarly consider how many AI features have appeared in Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, and the rest of Adobe's Creative Cloud -- and among some of Adobe's competitors too.
Other than using an open-source software like Darktable, there aren't many desktop photography editing tools that don't contain AI features. AI is becoming something to expect and use to your advantage in the modern era.
Aperty is using AI in a subtle and helpful way, without it feeling gimmicky or forced. The filters, presets, and effects or results from using any of Aperty's built-in AI features are all natural looking.
Aperty's AI isn't generative AI, so your results are not replacing entire areas of your original photos with new aspects. The AI simply speeds up some subtle editing processes for editing which you'd be doing manually otherwise -- such as teeth whitening, skin blemish removal, or possibly thinning the face shape.

Aperty competes strongly against Lightroom for portrait editing
Personally, I think Lightroom is useful for editing landscapes, using its sky filters, and employing its many other tools. It also has solid photo-editing tools across the board without being portrait specific. But Aperty's focus on portrait photography certainly gives it an edge in this area. Aperty includes tools that are simply not present within Lightroom, and the subtle use of AI to achieve the results doesn't have to be a negative thing at all, especially since Lightroom is adding new AI tools frequently too. I'm confident that your portraits will have a new type of glow once you give Aperty a try.
