Travel startup Mindtrip's new feature lets you build an itinerary from a screenshot, YouTube or TikTok video | TechCrunch

AI travel agent startup Mindtrip on Tuesday released a feature that lets you save places or build an itinerary from several places around the web. Mindtrip lets you insert a link like a Reddit post or a blog, and ask the AI assistant to build an itinerary based on the places mentioned. You can also see these places on a map and easily save them to favorites or a trip list. You can also use a YouTube, TikTok or Instagram link to populate the list of places mentioned in the video. Currently, the tool can only work with TikTok videos that have text overlays. For YouTube videos, the tool uses transcripts to show suggested places. You can even upload a screenshot of a ticket, or a list of cities you are visiting and ask Mindtrip's assistant to suggest places to visit, bars and restaurants. "People don't plan travel in a linear fashion, yet the travel industry continues to offer only platforms that do just that," CEO of Mindtrip, Andy Moss, said in a statement. "We've developed Start Anywhere to enable people everywhere to turn all of the incredible travel content online into something actionable." Now you have it. With reports showing that 75 percent of people find travel inspiration on social sites or online, we are excited to see what travelers do with this game-changing technology and how it will transform the way we all approach planning vacations." With this feature, Mindtrip is also starting a creator program, where creators can generate their own Mindtrip link and post it in their bios or along with their content. When someone clicks on that link, Mindtrip generates an itinerary based on the creator's content. Creators can also add their photos, videos, and recommendations directly to Mindtrip to better customize AI-generated itineraries. Mindtrip pays creators an unspecified amount for each registered user. The company said that creators can generate up to $10,000 per month through this program. The company said later this year, it plans to introduce a revenue-sharing program where creators will get a cut when a user places bookings through travel plans made by creators. Mindtrip, which has 12 experienced founders, raised $7 million from Costanoa Ventures last year. The company was one of the apps that OpenAI showed off on its dev day. While the product has been in beta testing for a while, Mindtrip made it available to users in May. The company said it uses proprietary knowledge of more than 6.5 million places mixed with OpenAI's tech for itinerary building. The company said it uses map, link, and picture overlays to provide better context for results. This year, the company will introduce a group chat feature for trip planning with family and friends and an iOS app.

This AI Tool Can Actually Help Plan Your Vacation

If you love vacation but hate planning, an AI travel agent may be for you. If you love vacation but hate planning, creating an itinerary and booking hotels, meals, and activities can put a damper on your trip before it even starts. Maybe you don't know where to start to look for recommendations, or you get overwhelmed by the sheer number of options to choose from. If a travel agent is a little out of reach, financially speaking, you may want to try Mindtrip.ai, a chat-based travel planning tool. It's currently in beta, but it will put together trip itineraries with specific recommendations based on a prompt, question, or uploaded media -- and you can see detailed hours, prices, locations, and reviews and click through to book directly when you're ready. The tool also has a "travel persona" quiz to inform its recommendations. You don't need an account to use Mindtrip, but you may want to create one (it's free) to keep track of all of your chats and itineraries. How to plan a vacation with Mindtrip The simplest way to get started with Mindtrip is to head to the homepage and start chatting. You can enter something as simple as a destination, or give it a very specific prompt (ie., "I want to visit Japan to see the cherry blossoms and go on a culinary tour"). The chatbot can also pull information from links to social media posts (though this didn't work for every piece of content I tried) or voice prompts. When I asked the chatbot to help plan a trip to Japan, it returned a five-day itinerary with specific sights, restaurants, and hotels as well as transportation recommendations. Each suggestion is clickable, which pops up a Google-like listing, including photos, reviews, and a map. Hotel suggestions show specific room types with rates and photos, while restaurant listings show similar suggestions nearby. City listings come with pros and cons as well as seasonal weather summaries. You can favorite recommendations if you want to build a different itinerary later. You can continue to build or refine the itinerary by giving the chatbot additional prompts or questions. If you create an account, you can see your chats and saved itineraries by opening the left-hand menu bar. Mindtrip also has a travel persona feature, which asks you a bunch of prompts about what kind of travel you like to inform its recommendations. I also used the chatbot to put together a trip for my hometown to see if its suggestions were ones I would also recommend, and for the most part they were. At the very least, this gives you a starting point that you can build on.

Holiday planning: Would you use AI to help?

When Jason Brown organised his summer holiday to Amsterdam and Ireland this year, he didn't turn to a travel book or check out Instagram. Instead the founder of recruitment company People Movers consulted ChatGPT, Open AI's generative artificial intelligence tool. He asked the AI a range of questions to help plan an itinerary to Amsterdam and Ireland, including Dublin and Galway, for his 10-day trip in July and August this year with his wife, two sons aged 20 and 16, and one of their son's friends. "In the past I have always used sites such as TripAdvisor, but I realised I had all the knowledge at my fingertips [through AI] and it spits it out in 15 seconds." He describes the experience as "fantastic". "It provided me with a golf itinerary for Dublin, and a four-day itinerary for elsewhere in Ireland. It was amazing that it split it into morning, afternoon and evening. "For example, on the first day it suggested arriving in the morning, spending the afternoon at Trinity College and Grafton Street, and then Temple Bar on the evening." For Amsterdam, he says it reeled off the highlights such as the Anne Frank museum, Van Gogh museum and the Jordaan neighbourhood. As the trip evolved so did his queries on ChatGPT.

Traveling is one of my favorite activities, but organizing a good trip can be quite complicated - especially when it comes to a new destination. Thankfully, there's a new app called MagicMiles that helps you create entire travel itineraries using AI. MagicMiles was launched a few months ago, but I've been using it now to plan my next trip. While there are already apps that help you organize your trip, MagicMiles' main idea is a bit different: it uses artificial intelligence to create a travel itinerary based on your interests. Using the app is quite simple and intuitive. First, you enter your travel destination. Then MagicMiles will ask you a few questions about your trip. For example, you need to enter things like whether you're traveling alone, with friends, family, or on a date. Then choose some activities that interest you, such as visiting museums, shopping, or enjoying the nightlife. The app also has three different budget options: Economy, Normal and Luxury. Choose the option that best fits your plans. Once you're done, MagicMiles will use AI to create the best itinerary based on your answers and how many days you'll be spending there. Tap on each activity to see more details about it, including a map with directions, phone number, website, opening hours and a graph showing the busiest times. You can also replace a specific activity or mark it as completed. More activities can be added manually. For a three-day trip to Rome, the app suggested I visit iconic places like the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Trevi Fountain on the first day. Then, for the other days, it chose galleries, museums and other tourist sights. For a single day trip to Madrid, the app suggested starting with the Royal Palace, then visiting other places such as the Museo del Prado, Retiro Park, and Gran Via. I've also created an itinerary for Tbilisi, Georgia (a place I've visited many times) and the app's recommendations are very much in line with the best places to visit in the city. MagicMiles also includes push notifications to keep you updated on any changes and works offline. Itineraries are synchronized between devices and the app has no data tracking or advertising. The developer told 9to5Mac that he plans to add more features such as an option to add flights and hotels to the itinerary in the future. You can try MagicMiles for free for three days. The app requires a monthly or annual subscription. The best part is that the app is available on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and Mac, as well as on Google Play for Android. Despite the lack of some features that will be coming in the future, MagicMiles is one of the must-have apps for those who love planning trips.
