While Photoshop Express has been an option on iPhones since 2010, the app being released today brings the mobile Photoshop experience a lot closer to the real thing, and one feature, in particular, has me impressed. Photoshop on iPhone brings a surprisingly feature-rich Photoshop experience to your phone. Among the capabilities are lots of Photoshop's core tools like layering and masking, so you can do all of the typical reconstruction and rearrangement that you might on a desktop or laptop. While I haven't had a chance to use the app for myself, I got a chance to preview those tools in a live demo, and crucial features like object selection, layering, and colorizing looked as seamless as they might on a MacBook. On top of that, Adobe also managed to squeeze in one you. It's a feature that might not be the most essential everyday tool for photo editing, but it's a bonus I wasn't expecting. Photoshop for iPhone will offer generative AI filling through Firefly. And speaking as someone who has used generative fill to give photos more breathing room, I can't argue with its inclusion in the Photoshop app for iPhone. One thing I'm curious to try for myself is selecting areas to edit by simply tapping, which is the main method of using Photoshop in this case. I hope Adobe's AI is adept enough to know what I want to be selected and precise enough to register finetune adjustments. Secondly, there's also a very different interface that will take some time. That said, from what I can tell, the Photoshop on iOS interface is very simplified, which is key if you're porting a proper photo editor into a mobile experience. Adove is also launching a web version with the same capabilities in tandem with the Photoshop app. The paid version of Photoshop for iOS will offer more features than the free version. According to Adobe, that will include more generative capabilities with Firedfly, the company's AI image generator, fonts, and typography options, and more precise object selection. One notable paywalled feature will be the beloved Magic Wand tool, which -- for the uninitiated -- can help trace objects that you want to select and edit in an image. Additionally, you'll have to pay to use Photoshop's "remove" tool, which functions similarly to Google's Magic Eraser tool, which removes "distractions" and "unwanted objects" from an image. Only premium users can lighten or darken sections of an image without altering hue or saturation. Photoshop on iPhone appears to bring an unprecedentedly rich Photoshop experience to iOS, which people have been waiting on for a long time. I think Photoshop on iOS' usefulness will hinge on whether its UI and reliance on tap selection are accurate/intuitive enough to justify using on your phone, however.

I argued a few years ago that Google's AI editing tricks were making Photoshop irrelevant for most people, and since then the best photo editing apps have made Adobe's jumbled approach to offering a mobile Photoshop look like a mistake. The increasingly ambitious graphic design king Canva snapped up Affinity Photo, Designer, and Publisher last year in a clear shot at Adobe. And with Apple also recently buying the popular Pixelmator photo editing app, the competition in the AI-powered image editing space is hot. This competition is good news for us, as it's forced Adobe to create the closest thing so far to a desktop-level Photoshop for our iPhones (and soon, our Android phones). Adobe no doubt also wants to get more people using its Firefly AI image generation, which it brands "commercially safe" because it was apparently trained on licensed content. Whether that's successful remains to be seen, but for now we're looking forward to spending more time with the new Photoshop app to see how it compares to the best photo editors for smartphones.

"Photoshop" is synonymous with image editing, and for good reason. The app is an industry standard, and has been for over 30 years. But while Photoshop has been available on computers and tablets for some time now, those looking to edit images on their smartphones have had to make due with alternative programs -- or simply stick to their other devices instead. That changes today. As of Tuesday, Feb. 25, Photoshop is officially on iPhone. You can go to the App Store, search "Photoshop," and see not just the usual alternatives -- like Lightroom, Canva, and Facetune -- but the real deal, too. Plus, the app itself is free, in addition to a number of "core imaging and design tools." According to the company, that includes the following, free of charge: The company showed off a number of edit examples one might use the app for: using a masking tool to copy a subject from one image and paste it to another; using a "quick select brush" to isolate parts of an image from the final product; layering multiple images over one another to create a dramatic but realistic assortment of items around the subject; changing the color of one element of an image, while preserving the rest; and selecting objects to quickly remove them from the scene. Of course, Adobe is also pushing its AI features, as well -- namely, Generative Fill. In one demo, a rep wants to insert an island onto an image of an ocean. They use the lasso tool to highlight where in the image they want that island to be, then use Generative Fill to create a grassy piece of land with AI. In another, Generative Fill is used to remove a background, replacing it with the sky seen in a different part of the image. Obviously, if you have previous Photoshop experience, you should be quite familiar with the tools and features of this version of the app. However, it may take you a moment to get your bearings: Based on press images and videos, this is definitely a mobile app, meaning its UI looks like many other image editing apps you might have used before. As such, it might take some trial and error before you understand where all of your usual options and features are. But based on what I see, this is the typical Photoshop experience -- just distilled into mobile form. While Photoshop and its "core" features are free to download and use on iPhone, there are more features and perks if you choose to pay. It's 2025, Adobe's iconic photo editor Photoshop just celebrated its 35th birthday and we finally have a true Photoshop mobile app. Based on what we saw at Adobe's preview in New York this week, the new Photoshop iPhone app is something new altogether -- not a shrunken version of the industry-standard desktop app, nor a basic upgrade from the current Photoshop Express. It's a surprising evolution of the program that thousands of creators use every day. Adobe has been working on Photoshop-branded mobile apps for over 15 years, launching and dropping products like Photoshop Express and Photoshop Touch along the way. There have been other Adobe mobile apps that've picked up steam and fulfilled different needs, too. Raw camera photographers got Lightroom's mobile app back in 2017. Two years later in 2019, Adobe launched Fresco, its mobile painting and drawing app which started on iPad and subsequently expanded to the iPhone. But for creators who favor Photoshop above all else, there's been something of a Photoshop-sized hole that none of these other mobile apps have been able to fill, until now. The iOS Photoshop app is available globally today, free with a basic feature set or with full features through the new $8 a month app-plus-Photoshop-web subscription ($70 a year). But it will allow you to do some image editing right from your phone. You can combine and manipulate images using core features like selections, layers, and masks, and you can use the Tap Select tool for targeted adjustments, including removal, recoloring, and replacement of image elements. You can also use the Spot Healing Brush to eliminate distractions and imperfections, and you can make use of Firefly-powered features like Generative Fill and Generative Expand to add new elements and modify images quickly. The mobile version of Photoshop also connects with other Adobe creative apps, including Express, Fresco, and Lightroom, and it also connects with Adobe Stock if you want to use free assets on your images. For years, Photoshop Express has been what Adobe has been selling as the "mobile" Photoshop experience, but it only takes 5 seconds using it to realize it's not nearly as capable as actual Photoshop and works well only for quick retouches to pictures. Adobe is also introducing a new "Photoshop Mobile and Web" plan priced at $7.99 per month, which will unlock premium features across both the web version of Photoshop and the mobile version. This will unlock more features such as more AI capabilities including Generate Similar, as well as tools such as Remove Tool, Clone Stamp, and Content-Aware Fill. It will bring the app closer to the desktop version of Photoshop in terms of features, but it will probably won't go all the way. The app itself seems to be based at least in part on what the company is doing on the web version of Photoshop. The web version has also received a bunch of changes to integrate better with this new smartphone version. It's fine, especially for a phone, but for more intricate work, you might still want to load up the old reliable desktop Photoshop. Other updates to the web version of Photoshop, if you care about that, include direct integration with the Adobe Stock library and expanded browser compatibility (now including Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge). We've also asked Adobe whether this mobile version has any integration at all with the full desktop version of Photoshop, and we're awaiting to hear back. But it could be pretty cool if that's the case. If we had both-ways synchronization, you could move a file to your computer to do more complex editing work there, or you could move a file to your phone to give it some finishing touches if you have to drive somewhere without your computer. All the features are unlocked with any existing paid plan that includes desktop Photoshop, which also includes the iPad and web versions. Adobe is also creating a new Photoshop Mobile and Web plan priced at $7.99/month or $69.99/year for access to the complete mobile feature set and full access to Photoshop on the web.
