Researchers use US supercomputers to train AI models on billions of molecules, accelerating the search for breakthrough battery materials. The project combines advanced computing with AI to transform the traditionally slow process of battery innovation.

AI Revolutionizes Battery Material Discovery

Researchers are harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and supercomputers to accelerate the discovery of new battery materials, potentially revolutionizing a field that has long relied on intuition and trial-and-error. A team led by Venkat Viswanathan, an associate professor at the University of Michigan, is developing AI foundation models that can predict promising new materials for battery electrolytes and electrodes 12.

The Power of Foundation Models

The team's AI foundation models are trained on data from billions of known molecules, enabling them to learn patterns that can predict the properties of new, untested materials. This approach allows researchers to explore the vast chemical space of potential battery materials more efficiently. Viswanathan explains, "The beauty of our foundation model is that it has built a broad understanding of the molecular universe, which makes it much more efficient when tackling specific tasks like predicting properties" 2.

These models can predict crucial battery characteristics such as conductivity, melting point, boiling point, and flammability, all of which are essential for designing more powerful, longer-lasting, and safer next-generation batteries 2.

Training AI models on billions of molecules requires immense computing power. The team gained access to the supercomputers at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) through the U.S. Department of Energy's INCITE program. This access allowed them to overcome the limitations of smaller clusters and costly cloud services 12.

In 2024, the team used the Polaris supercomputer at ALCF to train one of the largest chemical foundation models to date, focusing on small molecules crucial for designing battery electrolytes. They are now utilizing the new Aurora exascale system to develop a second foundation model for molecular crystals, which are the building blocks of battery electrodes 2.

Innovative Tools for Molecular Understanding

To teach the model how to understand molecular structures, the team employed SMILES, a widely used system that provides text-based representations of molecules. They also developed a new tool called SMIRK to improve how the model processes these structures, enabling it to learn from billions of molecules with greater precision and consistency 12.

Integration with LLM-Powered Chatbots

The team has integrated their foundation model with large language model (LLM) powered chatbots like ChatGPT. This integration allows students, postdocs, and collaborators to ask questions, test ideas quickly, and explore new chemical foundations without writing code. Viswanathan likens this capability to having a top electrolyte scientist available for consultation every day 12.

Collaboration and Future Plans

The project benefits from collaboration with Argonne experts and scientists from other fields, such as genomics, helping to optimize performance and share innovations across diverse scientific domains 1. The team plans to make their model available to the broader research community in the future and collaborate with laboratory scientists at the University of Michigan to synthesize and test the most promising candidates identified by the AI models 2.

Impact on Battery Research

This AI-driven approach represents a significant shift in battery materials discovery. As Viswanathan notes, "For most of the history of battery materials discovery, it's really been intuition that has led to new inventions" 2. By leveraging AI and supercomputing power, researchers can now explore potential materials more systematically and efficiently, potentially leading to breakthroughs in battery technology that could have far-reaching implications for personal electronics, medical devices, and beyond.
