iPhone 16 Launch Month Is Here: Everything We Know
Apple has announced that on Monday, September 9 it will hold its annual fall event, which means we are just days away from the launch of the iPhone 16. Like the iPhone 15 series, this year's lineup is expected to stick with four models - iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max - although there are plenty of design differences and new features to take into account. To bring you up to speed ahead of Apple's "It's Glowtime" event, we've summarized below the biggest iPhone 16 rumors we've covered so far here on MacRumors. For more details, follow the links, or dive into our dedicated roundups for both iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models. 1. Larger Displays Biggest Ever iPhones This year's iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumored to be getting bigger display sizes, increasing to 6.27- and 6.86-inches, respectively. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively. The new display sizes would be the largest ever for the iPhone. 2. Vertical Camera Layout iPhone 16 & iPhone 16 Plus Apple's iPhone 16 base models will feature a vertical camera arrangement with a pill-shaped raised surface, instead of a diagonal camera arrangement like the iPhone 15. The new camera bump features two separate camera rings for the Wide and Ultra Wide cameras. The vertical camera layout is expected to enable Spatial Video recording, which is currently limited to the iPhone 15 Pro models. 3. Battery Changes All iPhone 16 Models Rumors suggest the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature larger batteries than their predecessors, although the smaller iPhone 16 Pro device could see the biggest improvement, while the iPhone 16 Plus may have reduced capacity. The iPhone 16 is said to have a 6% increase over the iPhone 15, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max gaining a 5% increase, and the iPhone 16 Pro seeing a 9% increase. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Plus is rumored to have a 9% reduction in capacity. On the other hand, Apple could also potentially use stacked battery technology to increase energy density and prolong lifespan across the lineup. 4. Capture Button New Camera Capabilities All iPhone 16 models will have a new "Capture Button" dedicated to triggering image or video capture. The button will add features like the ability to zoom in and out by swiping left and right on the button, focus on a subject with a light press, and activate a recording with a more forceful press. The Capture Button will be located on the bottom right side of the iPhone 16, and will take the place of the mmWave antenna on U.S. iPhone models, with the antenna relocating to the left side of the device below the volume and Action buttons. 5. Ultra Wide Lens Upgrade iPhone 16 Pro & iPhone 16 Pro Max The iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to feature an upgraded 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera lens, which should allow it to capture more light, resulting in improved photos when shooting in 0.5× mode, especially in low-light environments. This also means that iPhone 16 Pro models should be able to shoot 48-megapixel ProRAW photos in Ultra Wide mode. These photos retain more detail in the image file for more editing flexibility, and can be printed at large sizes. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is also rumored to boast a bigger main camera thanks to an advanced custom 48-megapixel Sony IMX903 sensor. 6. Super Telephoto Camera iPhone 16 Pro Max The iPhone 16 Pro Max could be the first to feature a super telephoto periscope camera for dramatically increased optical zoom. "Super" or "ultra" telephoto usually describes cameras with a focal length of over 300mm. The current telephoto lens is equivalent to a 77mm lens, so if accurate, there could be a notable increase in zoom capabilities. Super telephoto cameras are often used for sports and wild animal photography, but the extremely soft backgrounds they create also make them useful for portrait photography, providing there is enough distance between the subject and the photographer. 7. Faster Wi-Fi Support Wi-Fi 6E & Wi-Fi 7 Apple's 2024 iPhone Pro models are expected to get Wi-Fi 7 in the Pro models, enabling data transfer over the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands simultaneously. This should result in faster Wi-Fi speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connectivity. With technologies such as 4K QAM, Wi-Fi 7 is also expected to offer peak data transfer speeds of over 40 Gbps, a 4× increase over Wi-Fi 6E. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus is rumored to support Wi-Fi 6E, which works with the 6 GHz band, enabling faster wireless speeds and reduced signal interference. 8. New A18 Series Chips All iPhone 16 Models Apple's next-generation A18 Pro chip is expected to be manufactured with TSMC's second-generation 3nm process, known as N3E. All four iPhone 16 models will be equipped with A18-branded chips, according to rumors, but Apple could still differentiate between the standard models and the Pro models, even giving the chips separate A18 and A18 Pro names. It makes sense for all four iPhone 16 models to have the same A18 chip because of the Apple Intelligence features set to debut in iOS 18. Apple Intelligence requires a high-powered chip for the AI features to run on-device. At this time, only the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are able to use Apple Intelligence. 9. 5G Qualcomm Modem iPhone 16 Pro & iPhone 16 Pro Max Apple is expected to use Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon X75 modem in this year's Pro and Pro Max models. The Snapdragon X75 includes improved carrier aggregation and other technology advancements for faster 5G download and upload speeds compared to the X70, which is used in iPhone 15 models. The modem's combined mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G transceiver also takes up 25% less circuit board space, and is said to use up to 20% less power. The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to retain the Snapdragon X70 modem. 10. Tetraprism Lens iPhone 16 Pro Both iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to feature 5x optical zoom, which is currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple's tetraprism lens system has a "folded" design that allows it to fit inside the smartphone, enabling up to 5x optical zoom and up to 25x digital zoom. In contrast, the current smaller iPhone 15 Pro is limited to up to 3x optical zoom, which is in line with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. 11. Micro-Lens Technology More Efficient OLED Apple is said to be weighing up the use of micro-lens technology to maintain or increase the brightness of OLED displays on next year's iPhone 16 models while potentially reducing their power consumption. MLA works by using a uniform pattern of billions of lenses inside the panel that reduces internal reflections. These lenses turn the path of light reflected backwards from the inside of the panel towards the screen, which can serve either to increase perceived brightness while maintaining the same level of power consumption, or maintain brightness levels while consuming less power compared to conventional OLED panels at the same luminance. 12. Action Button iPhone 16 & iPhone 16 Plus The iPhone 15 Pro models include an Action Button, and in 2024, the Action Button is expected to be expanded to the standard iPhone 16 models. The Action Button used across the iPhone 16 lineup will be identical to the iPhone 15 Pro Action Button. The Action button, which replaces the traditional mute switch, can perform multiple functions such as activating the Flashlight, turning on the Camera, launching a Shortcut, enabling or disabling a Focus mode, using Translate, turning on/off Silent Mode, and more. 13. 40W Fast Charging and 20W MagSafe Both iPhone 16 Pro Models The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will support 40W wired fast charging and 20W MagSafe charging, according to a recurring rumor. Right now, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models are capable of up to 27W peak charging speeds with an appropriate USB-C power adapter, while official MagSafe chargers from Apple and authorized third parties can wirelessly charge the iPhone 15 models at up to 15W. The charging boost is expected to balance and improve the problem of increasing charging time caused by the increase in battery capacity. 14. Upgraded Microphone Enhanced Siri Apple is said to be planning a significant upgrade to the iPhone 16 microphone to improve the new Apple Intelligence-enhanced Siri experience, which will include contextual awareness, semantic indexing, app control, and on-screen awareness. Apple's Siri AI ambitions will heavily rely on improved voice input processing, and the new mic is expected to offer significantly enhanced signal-to-noise ratio. 15. New Thermal Design Reduced Heat Apple is rumored to be working on a graphene thermal system for the iPhone 16 lineup, while the iPhone 16 Pro models could add metal battery casings to reduce overheating. Graphene has high thermal conductivity, surpassing that of copper, which is currently used in iPhone heat-sinks. Another source has claimed that iPhone 16 models will be equipped with a "larger graphite sheet" inside the chassis of the devices, to address potential overheating. The move could be in response to widely encountered overheating issues experienced with the iPhone 15 Pro, which Apple addressed through a software update. 16. Expanded Storage Both iPhone 16 Pro Models The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be available with double the maximum storage capacity as the iPhone 15 Pro models, increasing from 1TB to 2TB, according to one rumor. The move is said to be a result of Apple's switch to higher-density Quad-Level Cell (QLC) NAND flash for higher storage models. Apple's use of QLC NAND could allow Apple to fit more storage into a smaller space and it is less expensive than Triple-Level Cell (TLC) NAND, which current iPhones use. On the downside, QLC has comparatively slower read and write speeds. 17. Increased Memory iPhone 16 & iPhone 16 Plus Apple's iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models have been rumored to both feature 8GB of RAM, an increase over the 6GB of RAM in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. More working memory should equate to improved performance for multitasking on the iPhone. Apple has hinted that plenty of RAM is required for Apple Intelligence features, so it is perhaps no coincidence that all devices in the iPhone 16 lineup will have at least 8GB of RAM. 18. Upgraded Neural Engine Enhanced Machine Learning Apple's next-generation A18 chips will feature an upgraded Neural Engine with "significantly" more cores, according to one Taiwanese report. An upgraded Neural Engine should improve the performance of Apple Intelligence features and machine learning tasks. Apple's iPhone 12 through iPhone 15 models all include a 16-core Neural Engine. Despite no difference in core counts across generations, Apple has still managed to improve their performance in successive models. 19. Ultra-Thin Bezel Technology Maximized Display Size Apple plans to maximize the display size on the iPhone 16 series by using a new ultra-thin bezel technology, according to one rumor. Apple will use Border Reduction Structure (BRS) technology to minimize the bezel at the bottom of the display. BRS achieves this by rolling up the internal copper wiring into a more compact package. Apple reportedly plans to apply the borderless display technology to all four iPhone 16 models, but the Pro models will have the thinnest bezels of any smartphone, beating the screen border thinness of even its latest iPhone 15 Pro devices. 20. New Polished Titanium Finish iPhone 16 Pro & iPhone 16 Pro Max Apple will use an improved finishing process for the titanium chassis on the iPhone 16 Pro models, according to one rumor. The new process will allegedly make the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max look more polished than the iPhone 15 Pro models, which have a brushed finish. The improved manufacturing process will result in a glossy appearance that is more akin to the heavily polished stainless steel material used in previous Pro iPhones. However, the new titanium finish will be less prone to scratches compared to stainless steel. 21. Reduced Lens Flare Less Photo Artifacts Apple is said to be testing a new anti-reflective optical coating technology for its iPhone cameras that could improve the quality of photos by reducing artifacts like lens flare and ghosting. Apple plans to bring new atomic layer deposition (ALD) equipment into the iPhone camera lens manufacturing process to apply the coating. ALD-applied materials can also protect against environmental damage to the camera lens system without affecting the sensor's ability to capture light effectively. 22. New Colors All iPhone 16 Models The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to be available in black, white or silver, gray or "Natural Titanium," and rose. This suggests that the iPhone 15 Pro's Blue Titanium option will be discontinued and replaced with a new rose or rose gold titanium color, which could even have a bronze appearance under certain lighting conditions. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus is said to be coming in black, green, pink, blue, and white. Compared to the iPhone 15, this means that white will replace yellow, with the other colors remaining the same. Are you looking forward to the iPhone 16 series and plan to upgrade, or are you skipping this year's model?

Apple iPhone 16 Rumors: Everything We Know So Far
The iPhone 16 is set to be introduced on Sept. 9 during Apple's "Glowtime" event. The glow may refer to Siri's new colorful edge-to-edge design, but we won't know until Apple execs take the stage in Cupertino. While we also expect to see a new Apple Watch and AirPods on Sept. 9, the rumored M4 Mac is not likely to appear until October. We do have some clues about what to expect from the phone, though. Here's what we've heard so far from reliable sources. When Can I Preorder the iPhone 16? Given Apple's usual schedule, the iPhone 16 should be available for preorder on Friday, Sept. 13, but given that Apple is holding its event on a Monday versus the usual Tuesday, we may also get a one-day jump on preorders. German blog Macerkopf says they will begin on Thursday, Sept. 12. And while MacRumors called that rumor "sketchy," it made that pronouncement before Apple confirmed the date for its Glowtime event. iPhone 16 Colors: Bye-Bye, Blue Titanium Way back in February, we shared speculation from Majin Bu that the iPhone 16 Pro could come in "Desert Yellow (Desert Titanium), similar to the gold of the iPhone 14 Pro but deeper and heavier Cement Gray (Titanium Gray), a shade of space gray similar to that used on iPhone 6." At the time, 9to5Mac noted Bu's "mixed track record of accuracy," but the site recently posted that a bronze shade known as Desert Titanium will replace Blue Titanium, per another rumor from Bu. There's also an image from Sonny Dickson that shows four iPhones in neutral colors. While this might be meant to replace the gold iPhones of yore, they have more of a brown Zune vibe. The Camera Bump Gets Bumped The iPhone's camera bump has grown over time and has, for a while now, been a solid square. This could change with the iPhone 16, which is rumored to be getting two vertically stacked lenses with the flash next to it, as reported by 9to5Mac. This elliptical shape is sleeker, which you can see in this image that Sonny Dickson posted on X. Increased RAM and Storage Capacity To handle the increased load from Apple Intelligence, the base model iPhone 16 and 16 Plus may see a bump in RAM from the current 6GB to 8GB, according to MacRumors analyst Joe Rossignol. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max already have 8GB of RAM and it's not clear if they might receive an upgrade to 10GB or 12GB. Storage is also expected to see an upgrade, with the current default capacity of 128GB expanded to 256GB. Other rumors indicate that Pro models of the iPhone 16 may support up to 2TB of storage. The last iPhones to see an upgrade in RAM or minimum storage capacity were the 12 and the 13, respectively. The iPhone 12 saw a 2GB RAM increase bringing us the current 6GB standard, whereas the 13 was the first iPhone to start with 128GB of storage. Both Pro Models to Get Tetraprism Zoom Lens The iPhone 15 Pro did not get the tetraprism lens found on the 15 Pro Max (instead, it comes with the same 3x optical zoom as the iPhone 14 Pro Max). But according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, that will change in the next-generation iPhones, with the tetraprism feature landing on the iPhone 16 Pro as well as the iPhone 16 Pro Max. As PCMag's Eric Zeman explains, "The tetraprism is basically a periscope, or a way to bend light multiple times through glass, which is a tool other phone makers have used in their cameras since 2017 to bring faraway subjects closer to your smartphone." Getting that option on the smaller Pro model, which currently runs $200 less than the Pro Max, would be a nice money-saving perk. If Apple doesn't raise iPhone prices, that is. Kuo suggests we might end up paying more for the iPhone 16 to cover the camera upgrades. (There were rumors about a $200 iPhone price increase ahead of the iPhone 15 launch, but that only came to the 15 Pro Max, which is $100 more expensive than its predecessor.) Additionally, the camera module of the non-Pro models may return to the vertical design of the iPhone 12. "Aside from tidying up the outside appearance, the change does give another benefit to Apple," says Malcom Owen of Apple Insider. "When used in landscape orientation, the pair of cameras could therefore be used to record spatial video that could be viewed by the Apple Vision Pro." A second 48MP sensor is also rumored for the Pro and the Pro Max, according to Toms Guide. All 4 iPhone 16 Models Get an A18 Chip All four iPhone 16 models will run next-gen A18 chips from Apple, according to analyst Jeff Pu. "We view A17 Pro as a transition design and now expect all the iPhone 16 models to feature A18, on TSMC's N3E," Pu wrote in a research note. N3E means the chips will be made using TSMC's second-generation 3nm process, which is cheaper and easier to produce than the first-gen process, MacRumors notes. That said, Pu tells MacRumors that there will be some differentiation between the chips. Namely, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will run an A18 chip while the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max get an A18 Pro chip. That A18 chip "will feature an upgraded Neural Engine with 'significantly' more cores," MacRumors says, citing Taiwan's Economic Daily News. On the current iPhone lineup, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max run the A17 Pro chip, while the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus both have the A16 Bionic chip also found in the iPhone 14 Pro. iPhone 16 Ultra? In 2022, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple was working on an "Ultra" branded device to replace the Pro Max. In February, he followed that up to say it probably won't happen until 2024, and the Ultra version may actually be a new top-tier phone rather than a Pro Max replacement. "But instead of renaming the Pro Max 'the Ultra,' Apple could add an even higher-end iPhone above both Pro models. Internally, the company has discussed doing just that -- potentially in time for the 2024 iPhone release," Gurman said at the time. That report came after Apple CEO Tim Cook said "people are willing to really stretch to get the best they can" in terms of smartphone specs. What would make a phone Ultra? Gurman suggests, "It will probably offer further camera improvements, a faster chip, and perhaps an even larger display. There also may be more future-forward features, such as finally dropping the charging port." The bigger question? Would it be more durable and have a longer battery life as the Apple Watch Ultra does? Capacitive Capture Button According to MacRumors, Apple toyed with a capacitive touch button on the exterior of the iPhone 15, but the project didn't come together in time. It may try again with the iPhone 16, however, adding a button that's similar to the iPhone SE's home button below the power button. It's not entirely clear what this button will be used for, but it'll have haptic feedback and force-touch capability, MacRumors says. The Action button that rolled out for the iPhone 15 Pros will reportedly come to the base iPhone 16, too. Wi-Fi 7 Support On iPhone 16 Pro The iPhone 15 Pro lineup supports Wi-Fi 6E, while the base models stick with the Wi-Fi 6 found on the iPhone 14. According to analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 16 Pro will support Wi-Fi 7. It's the latest standard and should be more widely available in more consumer equipment by the time the iPhone 16 debuts. Screen Size Upgrades Rumors point to larger screen sizes across the iPhone 16 lineup. We're talking 6.3 inches versus 6.1 inches on the smaller phones and 6.9 inches versus 6.7 inches on the Pro and Plus, so it's unclear if the average person will notice a major difference. Still, we're potentially creeping back into phablet territory. (Remember those?) Other rumors are hinting at even slimmer bezels across the entire iPhone 16 lineup. CNET reports that a new type of "border reduction structure technology" will make this possible. This new manufacturing technique reportedly allows for "more compact control circuitry," effectively allowing for a slimmer bezel. The iPhone 16 lineup may also see a screen powered by a new material called M14, which Samsung is reportedly developing for Apple. This new material will allow for a more power-efficient display that will do away with the current blue, fluorescent screens. Better Battery Life Every iPhone iteration usually comes with a small boost to battery life. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is expected to be no different, according to a report published by MacRumors, with a battery that could, for the first time, last longer than 30 hours. While it was initially reported that the phone would only be getting a 5% larger cell compared with the 29-hour battery in the iPhone 15 Pro Max, there might be other efficiencies (likely built into the A18 processor) at work. iPhone 17 Rumors Already? The iPhone 16 is going to be the brightest, shiniest thing Apple has to offer this season, but lots of people are already eyeing the iPhone 17. Rumors on the next-next-gen smartphone point to 12GB of memory compared with the iPhone 16's expected 8GB and AI that's far more advanced and better integrated than what you'll see on stage on Sept. 9. And for those who hate how heavy phones have become, there are rumors of an iPhone 17 Air. The iPhone 17 is also going to look a little different, according to MacRumors. That could include an absence of a front camera cutout in favor of a small, circular cutout for under-display Face ID technology for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. There's also the possibility of even larger display sizes and the 120Hz ProMotion screen might appear on all the phones in the iPhone 17 lineup. Additionally, Mark Gurman at Bloomberg predicts that we'll see the first iPhone SE since 2022. It could look similar to an iPhone 14 but with an OLED display and even smaller bezels. More to Come PCMag will be in Cupertino on Sept. 9 to bring you all the news from the Glowtime event, so stay tuned for all the news.

iPhone 16: Everything we know so far | Digital Trends
We are getting closer to the launch of the iPhone 16 series. The new handsets will be announced during Apple's "It's Glowtime" event on September 9, 2024, and they will succeed the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models. The iPhone 16 is expected to have more significant changes than the iPhone 15 and should be an exciting release indeed. We've gathered all the biggest news, leaks, and reports for you here. Let's dive in. Recommended Videos iPhone 16: release date Apple has officially announced its next event, "It's Glowtime," for September 9, 2024. This is when we expect the iPhone 16 line, the Apple Watch Series 10, and more to be announced. Historically, preorders for the new phones will open up early Friday morning, with the phones released the following Friday. The September 9 announcement date potentially means September 13 for preorders and September 20 for general availability. Apple is expecting big things from the iPhone 16. After seeing iPhone sales slide 10% earlier this year, it's hoping to see a rebound for the rest of 2024. The reason? Each new phone will likely ship with some of the announced Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18. iPhone 16: possible price Though it was expected that the iPhone 15 lineup would have a price increase, that didn't happen aside from the iPhone 15 Pro Max model, which now starts at $1,200 for the 256GB version (there is no longer a 128GB variant). That was the only one in the iPhone 15 lineup that saw a "price increase," if you want to call it that. Apple's iPhone 15 component prices were the highest, though it absorbed those increased production costs. However, that may not happen in 2024, so we may see a slight increase for all iPhone 16 models. How much of a possible increase has yet to be seen. iPhone 16: design There will be some big changes coming for the iPhone 16 lineup, most notably the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. Earlier reports from MacRumors suggested three different prototype designs for the iPhone 16, but the most recent leak seems to confirm which one we are getting. For the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, Apple is departing from the diagonal camera layout that it has been using for the past few years. Instead, it's going with the vertical pill-shaped camera island, similar to what we first saw on the iPhone X, except a bit bigger due to the lenses and sensors. Any design changes for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max may be less drastic, as Apple seems to be pretty content with the changes it introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro. However, a more recent leak from reliable tipster Ice Universe suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro will reduce the bezel even more drastically, making it an even narrower bezel phone than the Samsung Galaxy S24. This may translate to 1.2mm bezels on the iPhone 16 Pro and 1.15mm bezels on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. My friend confirmed that iPhone 16 Pro will reduce bezel, surpassing Galaxy S24 to become the world's narrowest bezel mobile phone, which seems to be very close to the dream form. — ICE UNIVERSE (@UniverseIce) June 2, 2024 Reports have suggested that the new Capture button will be capacitive rather than physical, and it will sit flush with the phone's frame. Since it is rumored to be a Capture button, it will most likely be able to act as a camera shutter button, though it could also be customizable, like the Action button. Since it is likely to be touch-based, it could perform different actions through gestures like swiping. The Capture button could also be utilized by third-party developers for their own camera apps. This rumor may have just been confirmed by leaker Majin Bu, who uploaded two photos of the iPhone 16 Pro case, showing larger camera cutouts. The larger camera sensor would correspond with the rumor that the 12MP ultrawide camera is set to be replaced with a larger 48MP Sony IMX903 sensor (more on that below). In the iPhone 16 Pro case the camera module is huge pic.twitter.com/i847JqKSwt — Majin Bu (@MajinBuOfficial) May 28, 2024 The wireless antenna will be relocated to the other side of the iPhone to accommodate this new capacitive button. The Action button may also be larger on the iPhone 16 Pro models than on the current iPhone 15 Pro. Although iPhone design changes are never confirmed until Apple shows off the phone itself, it looks like these rumors have some weight to them. In early April, well-known Apple leaker Sonny Dickson shared photos of iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro dummy models -- reiterating all of the design changes mentioned above. A YouTube channel called EFTM received some metal dummy units of what appears to be the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Dummy units are important for case and accessory manufacturers because they make their accessories based on these units so that they are available in time for the actual product launch. The dummy units that EFTM has received appear to confirm the vertical camera modules for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. EXCLUSIVE - iPhone 16 - New Camera button across the range! However, there is a notable detail on all of the dummy units: the Action and Capture buttons. Both of these buttons could show up across the entire iPhone 16 lineup. Previous rumors hinted at the Action button coming to the standard iPhone 16 models, but the Capture button was previously reported to be only on the Pro models. Assuming these models are accurate, that appears to be changing. Since the Capture button will be located on the phones' bottom right edge, it's another indication that Apple could remove the physical SIM card completely in other countries. Apple moved to eSIM-only in the U.S., starting with the iPhone 14 line, and now it looks like that change could be coming to other parts of the globe. Speaking of dummy units, more leaked in late April when Sonny Dickson uploaded the above photo to X (formerly Twitter). These particular dummies are more complete-looking and provide an even clearer view of what this year's iPhone lineup should look like. More recently, some leaked molds appeared online from ShopSystem. The molds show the MagSafe charging ring being slightly smaller in the iPhone 16 models when placed side-by-side with the iPhone 15 models. If accurate, it suggests that Apple has tried to slim down the MagSafe components to reduce the magnetic material required, though the overall position of the magnets hasn't changed. That's a good thing because it means that older MagSafe accessories should continue to work with the new models. As far as colors go, it looks like the base model iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 plus will be coming in five colors instead of seven as was previously rumored. The five colors appear to be white, black, blue, green, and pink. However, it's important to note that the colors appear much more saturated than the previous iPhone 15 lineup, which can be seen as a good thing. For the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, it appears to have four possible colors: white titanium, black titanium, natural titanium, and an all-new bronze color that could be called "desert titanium." This new color would replace the blue titanium option that the iPhone 15 Pro came in, but it looks like a far cry from the rose gold that was originally rumored. Another leak from Majin Bu on X seems to confirm this new dark gold color with a close-up of the camera ring. Apple is also upgrading the microphones on the iPhone 16 lineup to have a higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous iterations. This means the device will be able to hear you more clearly, which could help with Siri requests. With reports suggesting iOS 18 will have more generative AI features, a more accurate Siri would be much needed. iPhone 16: displays There may be some changes coming for the display sizes of the iPhone 16 Pro models. However, the standard iPhone 16 variants will stay the same. The iPhone 16 Pro display may be increased to 6.3 inches, up from the current 6.1 inches. The larger iPhone 16 Pro Max will be 6.9 inches rather than 6.7 inches. With the smaller iPhone 16 Pro getting a bump in size, this will make it possible to fit a larger telephoto camera lens in it, allowing for the 5x optical zoom that debuted in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Due to size constraints of the 6.1-inch size, the tetraprism lens wasn't able to fit, but a 6.3-inch chassis can change that. Apple will be shrinking bezels across the board, though the real benefits will be more obvious on the Pro models. A new report has surfaced revealing that Apple is using a new display technology called Border Reduction Structure (BRS), which lets suppliers reduce the size of those black borders around the screen. We could also get brighter displays and more efficient power consumption, as Apple is reportedly using microlens technology in the iPhone 16 OLED panels. A report from The Elec suggests that the iPhone 17 line will mark the first time that all models, including the base ones, will use LTPO OLED panels with ProMotion and always-on screens. Unfortunately, the base iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus should still have a 60Hz refresh rate display. Also from The Elec, mass production of the OLED screen for the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, and 16 Pro are set to begin following Apple's final approval. The iPhone 16 Pro Max OLED screen is still being tweaked by Apple and may not get final approval for production until the end of June. The panels should be manufactured by three OLED suppliers, including Samsung Display, which will make panels for all four iPhone 16 models; LG, which will make panels for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max; and BOE, which will be responsible for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. iPhone 16: specs For the base model iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, we should see an A17 chip. However, this may not be the same A17 Pro chip that is currently inside the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple will likely use a lower-cost process for a standard "A17" chip that could reach the standard iPhone 16 models. Analyst Jeff Pu thinks Apple will go a different route and simply use the A18 and A18 Pro names for the new chips. This would mean that all iPhone 16 models would have some variation of an A18 chip rather than going with an A17, which could be seen as a "last-generation" chip. This news seemed to have been confirmed with a similar report from another source in July. While overheating was an issue with launch-day iPhone 15 models, it is said that Apple has worked on a new thermal design to help with heat dissipation. This could be in the form of a graphene thermal system for the base iPhone 16 models, while the iPhone 16 Pro might have a metal battery casing. Right now, the iPhone uses copper for the heat sinks, but graphene has higher thermal conductivity. There have been rumors that Apple has been working on its own in-house 5G modem chips, but that won't happen in 2024. Instead, the iPhone 16 Pro may use Qualcomm's Snapdragon X75 modem for faster and more efficient 5G connectivity. However, the base-model iPhone 16 will continue to use the Qualcomm X70 chip that is currently in the iPhone 15. The iPhone 16 could also have Wi-Fi 7 technology that could get at least 30 gigabits per second, up to 40Gb/s. iPhone 16: cameras As mentioned earlier, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will have a dual-camera layout presented in a vertical pill-shaped camera island. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max appear to have the same triple-lens camera layout as has been used in the past few years. A recent leak has given us all the details on the camera specs for both the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models. For the iPhone 16's dual-camera system, we have a 48MP primary wide camera with f/1.6 aperture and optical quality 2x zoom. The ultrawide lens will still have 0.5x zoom, but the aperture will be improved to f/2.2 from f/2.4. This would mean better lowlight images with the ultrawide camera. And Apple appears to be adding in a macro photography mode for the regular iPhone 16 models for the first time. With the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, the triple-lens camera system will consist of a 48MP primary wide camera with f/1.78 aperture, a 12MP telephoto lens with f/2.8 aperture and 5x optical zoom (including the smaller Pro), and a new 48MP ultrawide camera with f/2.2 aperture (up from f/2.4) for better lowlight performance. iPhone 16: battery life We may finally see better battery life with the iPhone 16 Pro series, as it's rumored to use stacked battery technology. With stacked batteries, it can result in higher capacity and longer lifespans. This may also bring faster 40W wired and 20W MagSafe charging speeds. Apple has long lacked in charging speed. If the iPhone 16 really addresses this, we could be in for a proper treat. According to @MajinBuOfficial, we also have a good idea of what to expect from the batteries in the entire iPhone 16 lineup, with changes across the board. The leaker claims that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have larger batteries than their predecessors. However, the iPhone 16 Plus will get the short end of the stick and actually have less battery capacity than before. The Pro Max model will also no longer use the L-shaped battery design and will go back to a rectangular shape like on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. According to an earlier leak by @MajinBuOfficial, who has a mixed record with Apple leaks, the standard iPhone 16 will have 3,561mAh (up from the iPhone 15's 3,349mAh), the iPhone 16 Plus battery will come in at 4,006mAh (down from the iPhone 15 Plus' 4,383mAh), and the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be 4,747mAh (up from the iPhone 15 Pro Max's 4,422mAh). It also appears that the iPhone 16 Pro will have 3,577mAh (up from iPhone 15 Pro's 3,274mAh), according to a report on MacRumors. iPhone 16 pro battery mh3577and iPhone 16 pro max 4747mh https://t.co/vqyUGfwSSX pic.twitter.com/i7JBLUJ7Nl — fix Apple 🍏 (@lipilipsi) May 29, 2024 In July, we heard news iPhone Pro users have been waiting for. This year's Pro models could get a charging upgrade, with both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max supporting 40-watt wired charging and 20W MagSafe charging. This would be the first significant battery charging change in many years. iPhone 16: software and updates At the highly anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, Apple unveiled the groundbreaking iOS 18. One of the most eagerly awaited features of iOS 18 is the introduction of Apple Intelligence, an innovative AI update to revolutionize how we interact with our devices. From transforming how we compose messages and emails to enhancing how we manage our photo libraries and communicate with Siri, Apple Intelligence promises to elevate the user experience to unparalleled heights. Beyond the integration of Apple Intelligence, iOS 18 is set to deliver many new and enhanced features. These include an array of fresh customization tools to personalize the user experience, an overhauled Control Center designed to provide even greater convenience, and a revitalized Photos app that promises to make organizing and reliving memories more captivating than ever before. With iOS 18, Apple is not just introducing an update -- it's shaping the future of user interaction with technology. The first official version of iOS 18 is expected to be released for older compatible iPhones a few days before the official launch of the iPhone 16 models.

Apple Sets iPhone 16 'Glowtime' Event for Sept. 9: What to Expect and How to Watch
Apple has sent invitations for a "special event" that is likely to include the launch of its next-gen iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods. It's scheduled for Monday, Sept. 9, at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino; things kick off at 10 a.m. PT. That's a day later than initially expected, notes Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who had tipped a Sept. 10 event. Typically, Apple's events are held on Tuesdays. That was the case for the launch of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 13, though the iPhone 14 switched things up with a Wednesday event, so Apple clearly likes to keep us guessing. As for what to expect, the tagline on Apple's invite says "It's Glowtime" below a glowing, multi-colored logo. That could be a reference to the redesigned Siri, which takes over the edges of an iPhone's screen in iOS 18 with a similar color-changing effect. But with Apple, it could mean anything. Apple will livestream the event on its website and Apple TV. We scoured the web for the most reliable and up-to-date rumors to give you the best idea of what to expect at the iPhone 16 announcement. Here's what's likely to be on tap. When Does the iPhone 16 Come Out? With an event on Sept. 9, we'll probably see the iPhones launch the following week. Gurman tweeted that Apple "scheduled an unusual and mandatory meeting for employees at all Apple retail stores for the evening of Sept. 12 or morning of Sept. 13...ahead of the iPhone 16 release a week later." If Apple follows its typical pattern, preorders for the new devices will begin on Sept. 13, with an on-sale date a week later on Sept. 20. Apple Intelligence Apple Intelligence was the star of the show at WWDC, but we've since heard that it won't launch with iOS 18 in September and will instead arrive as a software update in October with iOS 18.1. Siri Apple Intelligence features aren't expected until 2025. When it does arrive, you'll need at least an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max. Presumably, it will work across the iPhone 16 lineup, but we'll need to wait for confirmation from Apple on that. New A18 Chip to Power Apple Intelligence Apple Intelligence will need a boost in processing power to run smoothly. Apple looks to power the entire iPhone 16 lineup with an A18 processor and at least 8GB of RAM, 9to5Mac reports. In the current lineup, the non-Pro iPhone 15 models have 6GB of RAM while the two Pro models have 8GB. The iPhone 15 series also uses different chips; the A17 Pro for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and the A16 Bionic for the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. But according to back-end code found by Nicolás Alvarez, all iPhone 16 models will have the same A-series chip, MacRumors reports. Since Apple has relied on different chips to differentiate between the Pro and non-Pro iPhones for the last few years, it will be interesting to see if it differentiates them in another way. Better Cameras, Smaller Bump, Fun Colors, New Sizes 9to5Mac says the Ultra Wide camera on the iPhone 16 Pro will increase from 12MP to 48MP, while the iPhone 16 cameras will get a redesigned and rounded camera module in order to potentially accommodate the recording of spatial video. There's no word yet if Apple will improve the iPhone Pro's video capture powers beyond 4K60 to 8K. Competing Android devices have been able to capture 8K video for years. We got a good look at the new camera bumps on the iPhone 16, as Apple leaker Sonny Dickson shared a picture that showcases the backs and colors of the iPhone 16. The two lenses of the non-Pro iPhones are stacked vertically on a rounded camera bump, a significant departure from the diagonally opposed arrangement on the iPhone 15. Apple will offer the phone in white, black, blue, green, and pink. Dickson also posted a photo of the backs of the iPhone 16 Pro, which include a three-camera setup, along with white, black, and tan colorways. Some commenters have suggested the tan color may actually be bronze. Finally, he showed the different sizes we can expect across the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro lineup. According to Dickson, the display on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will remain the same at 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively, but the screen on the iPhone 16 Pro is in for a jump. The phone will now feature a 6.3-inch display (matching the new Pixel 9 Pro) instead of the 6.1-inch size found on the iPhone 15 Pro. The iPhone 16 Pro Max will also get bigger, as it will have a 6.9-inch screen compared with the 6.7-inch display on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The larger size will put it on even footing with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Action Button for All Last year, Apple introduced the Action button exclusively on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. It replaced the mute button and can be programmed to activate many different actions, including the camera, the flashlight, or a shortcut. MacRumors reports that this button will make its way to all iPhone 16 models. At some point, Apple might also give the button new features, such as force touch, which would allow it to detect pressure changes. There's no indication that this particular feature will appear any time soon, though it does seem likely that the current version of the Action button will make an appearance on the iPhone 16 this year. Dedicated Camera Button 9to5Mac also reports that the iPhone 16 could see an additional button on the right side of the phone dedicated to bringing up the camera app and taking pictures. The button could also come with some kind of touch sensitivity, which would allow users to zoom in and out by sliding their fingers up and down the button. Camera buttons used to be a staple across high-end phones but eventually disappeared. Longer Battery Life More battery life is always better, and a report by MacRumors suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro Max might be in line for an even larger battery. This could potentially give the device the longest-ever battery life on an iPhone, topping over 30 hours of usage. Apple already claims up to 29 hours of battery life on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, though it managed only 20 hours and 15 minutes in PCMag's testing. There's no doubt the Apple A18 processor will play a role in determining how efficiently the new iPhones run. Apple Watch X and Ultra 3 This year will be the tenth anniversary of the debut of the Apple Watch, and Apple was originally thought to be marking the occasion with a big redesign. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thinks that the watch could be thinner but offer larger sizes. Kuo also says the two models could be larger -- from 41mm and 45mm, respectively, to 45mm and 49mm. A new color may be included in the lineup, too. However, newer reports from Mark Gurman suggest design changes, if any, will be minimal. "This year's third-generation Apple Watch Ultra will have roughly the same look as the original, and the other watch models still resemble the Series 4 launched in 2018," he writes. Other potential upgrades include a new chip with better performance and the potential for AI features, longer battery life thanks to an upgraded display, and, of course, all the new tools built into watchOS 11. AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 Apple hasn't introduced significant redesigns to its in-ear AirPods for a few years. The AirPods 3 have been around since 2021. And though the AirPods Pro 2 gained a UBS-C connector last year, the headphones have otherwise remained unchanged since 2022. Leaker Kosutami recently suggested that both the AirPods 4 and the AirPods Pro 3 will be announced soon. Details about what may be new, however, are rather thin. Gurman suggests that Apple may introduce two models of the AirPods 4, one without ANC to replace the aging AirPods 2 and another with ANC to sub in for the AirPods 3. Other enhancements would entail improved audio and battery life. Waiting on a new set of over-ear cans from Apple? Your wait may continue. Reports of a successor to the 2020-era AirPods Max, Apple's $549, ANC-equipped headphones, are few and far between. iPhone 17 and SE Rumors The iPhone 16 has yet to be released, but that hasn't stopped speculation about the iPhone 17. Some of these reports, according to MacRumors, include under-display Face ID technology for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. This would remove the front camera cutout altogether in favor of a small, circular cutout for the camera. We could also see even larger display sizes, plus the 120Hz ProMotion screen might trickle down to all the phones in the iPhone 17 lineup. There's also talk of an entirely new model called the iPhone Slim, which would be thinner and only have one rear camera. The iPhone 17 lineup could also be getting an Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip, which could potentially better integrate with Apple's existing hardware and software to get even faster Wi-Fi speeds. Additionally, Gurman predicts that we'll see the first iPhone SE since 2022. This new version could look similar to an iPhone 14 but with an OLED display and even smaller bezels. It will also most likely have access to Apple Intelligence.

iPhone 16: Everything We Know About the Release Date, Leaks and More
The iPhone 16 is expected to be revealed soon. Apple sent out media invites to an event on Monday, Sept. 9, with the tagline, "It's Glowtime." Apple's new iPhone, a follow-up to the iPhone 15, is launching hot on the heels of Google's new Pixel 9 and 9 Pro. The iPhone 16 will be a platform for Apple Intelligence, which is now available to try as part of the second developer beta for iOS 18.1. And, if the rumors are true, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro will each get a number of significant updates from new power-efficient displays and larger screens to better zoom lenses and the inclusion of an action button for all 2024 iPhone models. Read more: Apple's 'Glowtime' iPhone 16 Event: What to Expect and How to Watch The iPhone 16 series will be as much about revamped hardware as it is a platform for Apple's suite of new AI-powered features. All this comes at a time when rival phone-makers like Samsung and Google have phones full of AI, to make everything from writing messages and removing objects and people from photos super easy. That's not to say that the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro will just be about AI and Apple Intelligence. Expect new colors, upgraded cameras and larger screens. Here are the most credible rumors for the iPhone 16. Apple on sent out invites on Monday for its annual fall iPhone launch event, this one for the anticipated iPhone 16. The event takes place Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. PT. We correctly predicted the week of the event, if not quite the day, based on Apple's past: Depending on when Labor Day falls, the event has been held on the Tuesday of the second week of September, which would have been Sept. 10 this year. (The iPhone 15 event was held on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023.) There's only been two times where Apple held the event on a Wednesday. The most recent was the iPhone 14 event held on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022. New iPhones typically go on sale shortly after the event, usually the Friday of the following week. That would mean the iPhone 16 release date would be Friday, Sept. 20. (For the iPhone 13, preorders began Sept. 17 and the phones went on sale Sept. 24.) The rumors of larger screen sizes are piling in, at least for select iPhone 16 models. The latest is from Korean publication, the Elec, which published an April report saying select iPhone 16 models are poised to adopt an innovative screen technology, resulting in thinner bezels, the frame around the phone's screen. This development could translate to a slightly larger screen area for some iPhone 16 models, although it's not clear which. Apple has historically introduced display upgrades in its Pro line of products, before sometimes trickling them down to lower-cost models afterwards. Display manufacturers have reportedly introduced a novel border reduction structure technology, enabling more compact control circuitry and ultimately leading to slimmer bezels. The iPhone 16 Plus maybe be the last of Apple's larger regular iPhone. Apple is reportedly planning to cut the larger-screened flavor, Plus model, of its standard iPhone from its lineup next year and will instead introduce a new ultra-thin premium iPhone said to be called the iPhone 17 Slim. That's according to reports from two analysts known for their Apple predictions: TF International Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo and Haitong International Securities' Jeff Pu (as 9to5Mac reported). Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has color predictions for the iPhone 16 lineup. In a post on X in May, he said that the blue color option of the iPhone 15 Pro would be discontinued and replaced with a new rose model, which would be available for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. He also predicted that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will be available in white, replacing the yellow model. Speaking of screen sizes, Apple has maintained the two screen sizes for iPhone Pro models since 2020 when it launched the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. However, that's rumored to change with the iPhone 16 Pro models, which might get bigger screens. Display analyst Ross Young suggested earlier this year that the iPhone 16 Pro models will have larger screens, putting the sizes at 6.3 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro and 6.9 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. That rumor was later corroborated by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who said the iPhone 16 Pro models could grow by "a couple tenths of an inch diagonally." Read more: How the iPhone 16's Design May Change The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are believed to be sticking with the current 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes. If the size increase is accurate, it would be yet another move from Apple to distinguish its Pro iPhone models from its regular ones. Another change that could make its way to iPhone 16 displays is greater power efficiency. Samsung Display is apparently developing a new material set, dubbed M14, specifically for Apple, according to a TheElec report, which says the new technology should arrive on iPhones launching next year. M14 will replace the blue fluorescent technology that's used now with blue phosphorescence technology, creating an even more power-efficient screen than the current LTPO ones used on Pro models, the report says. AI is perhaps the biggest tech buzzword this year, and Apple followed in the footsteps of rivals, Samsung and Google, which each trumpeted the new AI tips and tricks on their flagship phones. Apple Intelligence made its debut during the company's Worldwide Developers Conference in June. It brings ChatGPT integration, tools for proofreading and rewriting text in a different tone, new Siri features for getting tech support and answering more personalized requests, and the ability to generate images and emojis, among other features. These new AI features are expected to ship on all the models of the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup with iOS 18 right out of the box. The upcoming iPhone 16 is generating buzz with its rumored Capture Button -- a feature that promises to simplify photography and video recording, according to MacRumors, especially when held in landscape mode. The button, which could be located on the right side of the iPhone occupied by the mmWave antenna (for iPhones sold in the US), would be pressure sensitive, the report suggests. This means people a hard press will take a photo, a light press can autofocus while capturing content, an apparently it'll recognize swiping left and right too. Like Apple did with the Action Button, it's possible limits the debut of this button on the Pro models of the iPhone 16 before trickling it down to the more affordable models. In March, AppleInsider published a collection of photographs purportedly displaying 3D-printed dummy models of the rumored iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. The images revealed that the iPhone 16 may have a vertical camera stack as opposed to a diagonal one and an action button, similar the one on last year's iPhone 15 Pro. Both the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max could have 5x telephoto lenses next year. According to Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo, a tetraprism lens will make its way to both Pro models next year, as opposed to just the Pro Max model. Apple equipped the iPhone 15 Pro with a 12-megapixel 3x optical zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 12-megapixel 5x optical zoom camera, which is the equivalent of 120mm lens on a full-frame camera. If this rumor is true, it could mark a breakthrough in design. When Apple launched the 15 Pro Max with its 5x telephoto lens, it cited the phone's bigger body as to why the Pro Max had it, but the Pro didn't. Read more: iPhone 16 Camera: What Apple Could Change According to a recent leak discovered by MacRumors, Apple might be exploring a novel approach to enhance photo quality. The rumor suggests that the company could add an anti-reflective technology to its camera manufacturing process. If successful, this could potentially eliminate unwanted artifacts like lens flare, resulting in more realistic photos. In a break with the past two years, all four iPhone 16 models will apparently get a next-generation Apple chipset, which will all receive A18 branding. According to a MacRumors report citing Jeff Pu, an executive analyst for Haitong International Securities, all four models will have an A18 series chip with Pro iPhone models getting an A18 Bionic Pro and base models getting a regular A18. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus currently have an A16 Bionic, which debuted on the 2022 iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, while the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max run on the A17 Pro processor. Pu says the A18 chip will be manufactured with TSMC's cutting-edge 3-nanometer process. Read more: Apple iPhone SE 4 Rumors: iPhone 14 Design, Face ID and More Probably not. Virtually every major phone-maker -- from Google to Oppo to OnePlus and Samsung -- has launched several generations of bendable handsets, but Apple has been characteristically quiet about whether there will ever be a foldable iPhone. The latest rumors suggest Apple is working on a "clamshell" design iPhone, which could be ready as early as 2026 according to a report last Tuesday from The Information. The new design will coincide with Apple's plans to also release newly improved camera technologies, including a variable aperture, the report added. It isn't clear what's kept Apple from releasing a folding iPhone in the past few years. The company has reportedly been working on folding iPhone designs since at least 2019.

iPhone 16 Pro vs. iPhone 15 Pro: Will it be worth the upgrade?
Apple will launch the iPhone 16 series in just a few days at a September 9 event, which likely has iPhone users wondering: how does the iPhone 16 Pro compare to the iPhone 15 Pro? Until the official debut of Apple's iPhone 16 series, we can only use reliable leaks and rumors to pit the iPhone 16 Pro vs the iPhone 15 Pro. Rumors have been circulating for months leading up to the iPhone 16 Pro's debut, so we have a fairly good idea of the phone's specs, design, camera array, and more. Both premium phones are capable of Apple Intelligence, but is one objectively better than the other? Will the iPhone 15 Pro still be a good pick after the iPhone 16 Pro launches? And is the iPhone 16 Pro worth it for its rumored price? By the end of this comparison, we'll have tackled all those questions, and you'll have a good idea of whether you should upgrade to the newer iPhone 16 Pro or stick with the iPhone 15 Pro. When considering whether you should upgrade to an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16 Pro, price should certainly be a factor. Apple hasn't officially announced prices yet for the iPhone 16 series, but the consensus seems to put the iPhone 16 Pro somewhere between $999 and $1,099 as a starting price. If the iPhone 16 Pro launches at the same price the iPhone 15 Pro launched at -- which would fall in line with Apple's typical plans -- it'd start at $999. But if a leak from Apple Hub on X rings true, Apple may boost the iPhone 16 Pro's starting price to $1,099. When the iPhone 16 series launches at Apple's 'It's Glowtime' event on September 9, the iPhone 15 series will likely get a price cut of $100, something Apple is known to do with every new generation launch. This means the iPhone 15 Pro will probably have a starting price of $899 compared to the iPhone 16 Pro's potential starting price of $999 or $1,099. In addition to its starting price being cut by $100, the iPhone 15 Pro may also go on sale more to make room for iPhone 16 Pro stock. The most important spec difference to note between the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro is the chip running the show. Apple's iPhone 15 Pro is equipped with an A17 Pro chip, while the iPhone 16 Pro will boast an A18 chip with an upgraded NPU and better capabilities for on-device Apple Intelligence features. Right now, there's no indication the iPhone 16 Pro will receive more RAM than the iPhone 15 Pro. Both models will probably have 8GB, which seems to be the minimum required to run Apple Intelligence features, but the iPhone 16 Pro will be better equipped to handle AI tasks with its updated A18 Pro chip. It's possible Apple may ditch the lowest 128GB storage option for the iPhone 16 Pro, offering 256GB as the new low. According to Digital Chat Station on Weibo in a since deleted post (via Tom's Guide), the iPhone 16 Pro may feature a 48MP ultrawide camera lens, a major upgrade over the iPhone 15 Pro's 12MP ultrawide lens. The same leaker claims the 48MP main camera may also get an upgraded sensor that's able to capture more light and improve color quality in photos. We've heard rumors recently about an ultra-thin iPhone or a foldable model, but these are likely not going to debut in Apple's iPhone 16 series come September 9. Although the iPhone 16 Pro may not be thinner or foldable compared to the iPhone 15 Pro, it will get at least one major design change, reportedly. Apple is supposedly adding an all-new 'capture button' on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models, which will be different than the iPhone 15 Pro's 'action button.' According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, this dedicated capture button would function like an actual camera shutter you'd find on DSLR cameras. Pressing half-way down on the button will engage autofocus, and pressing down fully will snap the photo. Via Gurman's report, this button might also be capable of another unique action. If you swipe your finger over the capture button, you may be able to zoom in and out while taking photos and videos. The iPhone 16 Pro may also be ditching an existing color in lieu of a controversial new option. Currently, the iPhone 15 Pro is available in four unique titanium colors: White, Black, Natural (Gray), and Blue. According to both Majin Bu and Sonny Dickson on X, the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro will ditch the Blue Titanium in favor of a new Desert Titanium colorway, a deep gold that some fans are confusing for brown or even orange based on the photos we've seen thus far. The iPhone 15 Pro is one of the first two phones capable of supporting Apple Intelligence features, along with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, Apple hasn't actually launched AI features yet, and the company won't until the first major update to iOS 18 -- Apple Intelligence won't reach the public until iOS 18.1. For those looking to upgrade to either the iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro, here's what that means for you: both phones will receive Apple Intelligence features at the same time, likely around October 2024. You can access some features via beta releases, but it's not wise to try out beta software on your only iPhone. For most, it'll be smarter to wait until the official release of iOS 18.1 to test Apple Intelligence features. Even though both phones are equipped with 8GB of RAM and capable of supporting Apple Intelligence, the iPhone 16 Pro has a slight leg up here thanks to its A18 Pro chip with an upgraded NPU. If your existing iPhone needs an upgrade, it's definitely worth waiting just a few weeks for Apple to launch the upcoming iPhone 16 series at the 'It's Glowtime' event confirmed for September 9. On September 9, we'll have official details from Apple on the iPhone 16 Pro and be able to properly compare it to the iPhone 15 Pro. Until then, here's what we'd recommend based on the rumors we've heard. For most people who currently have an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max capable of supporting Apple Intelligence when it launches with iOS 18.1, it won't be worth upgrading to the iPhone 16 Pro. The exception here is if you really want a slightly improved camera array, improved performance (both overall and AI-specific), or that handy capture button. If you're looking to upgrade an older iPhone, however, it's probably worth splurging on the iPhone 16 Pro over the iPhone 15 Pro. And if you can hold out, it might even be worth waiting for the iPhone 17 for boosted base RAM amounts.

Below, we've outlined everything we know about iPhone 16 so far, based on rumors, past releases, and more. Prepare yourself for the next iteration of iPhone! As mentioned, Apple plans to reveal the iPhone 16 on September 9. The company will showcase new features, models, and the release date at this time. Based on prior events, we will likely see deep dives into some of the key features of this year's iPhone. Many are expecting Apple to launch the iPhone 16 on Friday, September 20. This would align with prior iPhone launches after keynote events. Pre-orders will likely open on Friday, September 13. We expect all models of the iPhone 16 to be available at this date. As for models, the iPhone 16 is expected to follow the iPhone 15 with four models available: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 Plus will act as a larger version of the standard iPhone 16, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max is a bigger iPhone 16 Pro, respectively. Pricing is also expected to follow iPhone 15, but there is a chance that Apple increases the price of iPhone 16 Pro this year. Due to new hardware components, Apple could take this year as an opportunity to raise the base price of the 16 Pro, but this is not confirmed by any means. Therefore, our expected pricing model is as follows: All iPhone 16 models will receive significant new features, according to reports. From the outside, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro will now feature vertically-aligned cameras instead of a square cutout. Additionally, all models are said to feature the Action Button, which was previously exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models. There's also the Capture Button, a new button found under the rest button. This will allow you to capture photos without touching or interacting with the screen. Once again, it's been reported that all iPhone 16 models will feature this button. Another impressive feature that is rumored for the lineup is support for 40W wired charging, which will allow your phone to charge faster than ever before. Currently, iPhone 15 cannot charge at even 30W wired, so this will be a significant upgrade. It's also said that Apple will be changing the design of the battery with iPhone 16, in an attempt to comply with EU regulations and make the battery more easily replaceable. Of course, iOS 18 is set to have a major focus on AI features, which Apple is grouping together under Apple Intelligence. It's likely that this will be a major focus of the keynote, with the invite card sharing similar colors to Apple Intelligence and stating "It's Glowtime." We know that some Apple Intelligence features include AI-created emoji, smart reply for iMessage, call recording, auto-transcription, and more. It's possible that Apple will showcase these features in action on iPhone 16 during the September 9 event. Finally, new accessories are also set to make their debut alongside the iPhone 16 lineup. According to Bloomberg, Apple is planning to reveal new accessories at the "It's Glowtime" event, including Apple Watch Series 10, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple AirPods 4. Apple Watch Series 10 is set to offer a slimmer design and wider screen. A sleep apnea detection feature is expected to be a main focus of this model, with potentially other health sensors like blood pressure monitoring also rumored. As for Apple Watch Ultra 3, this model is not expected to offer any major upgrades from its predocessor. Though, Ultra 3 will receive a new chip that possibly could be set to utilize Apple Intelligence features. Apple is reportedly set to release two variants of AirPods 4, aimed to replace the entry level and mid-tier models. The latter will bring active noise cancelation to the mid-tier AirPods for the first time, according to Bloomberg. It's possible that Apple will also reveal the third generation of AirPods Pro, but this is not confirmed at this time. Further, Apple could even choose to unveil the next generation of AirPods Max, which have not received an upgrade since they released in 2020. Beyond these accessories, Apple is not likely to have anything new. We do not expect an upgrade to the HomePod, nor a new unnannounced accessory.

The iPhone 16 lineup is expected to feature a refreshed design, with the Pro models potentially sporting a larger display. Rumors suggest a shift to 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch screens for the Pro and Pro Max variants, respectively 2. This increase in screen real estate could provide users with an even more immersive experience for content consumption and productivity tasks.
At the heart of the iPhone 16 series will likely be Apple's next-generation A18 Bionic chip. Built on a 3nm process, this powerhouse is expected to deliver significant improvements in performance and energy efficiency 3. The enhanced chip could pave the way for more advanced AI features and smoother overall operation.
One of the most exciting rumors surrounding the iPhone 16 is the potential introduction of on-device AI capabilities, possibly branded as "Siri+" 4. This could revolutionize how users interact with their devices, offering more personalized and context-aware assistance without compromising privacy.
Apple is known for pushing the boundaries of smartphone photography, and the iPhone 16 is expected to continue this tradition. Rumors suggest improvements to the camera system, including enhanced low-light performance and advanced computational photography features 5. These upgrades could further blur the line between smartphone and professional-grade cameras.
With 5G now standard, attention turns to other connectivity improvements. There's speculation about the inclusion of Wi-Fi 7 support, which could offer faster and more reliable wireless connections 2. Additionally, advancements in battery technology and power management could lead to improved battery life across the iPhone 16 lineup.
In line with Apple's commitment to sustainability, the iPhone 16 is expected to incorporate more recycled materials and potentially feature packaging made entirely from recycled sources 1. This move aligns with the growing consumer demand for more environmentally conscious tech products.
Apple's September event, rumored to be called "Glowtime," may showcase not only the iPhone 16 but also other exciting products like the Apple Watch Series 10 and AirPods Pro 3 4. This event could mark the beginning of a new era for Apple, with a strong focus on AI integration and enhanced user experiences across its ecosystem.
