Apple launches new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 chip -- boasts 2x SSD speeds and increased GPU performance for AI over M4
After teasing a new product launch on X earlier today, Apple has just announced the 2025 refresh to its 14-inch MacBook Pro lineup, now equipped with the shiny new M5 chip. The press release, accompanied by a separate M5 announcement, was just published on the company's website, unpacking the new laptop in great detail. It's largely an iterative update, with the new chip nicely slotting in for yesteryear's M4 in an otherwise largely unchanged package. There are no design tweaks or exciting features to speak of. The chassis, including the 14-inch Mini LED display, is identical to previous models -- just like all the other core features such as ports, speakers, keyboard, trackpad, and even the 12 MP webcam. The battery is once again quoted to last 24 hours in video playback, and you still only get Wi-Fi 6E. However, the SSD is 2x faster compared to last gen, and you can now spec it up to 4 TB, twice as much as previous gen. It's clear that Apple is entirely focused on what's inside, the latest generation of its homegrown M-series silicon -- M5. This swap is what likely enables the memory bandwidth to be upgraded from 120 GB/s on the M4 to now "over 150 GB/s" on the M5. The SoC package includes a 10-core CPU, a 10-core GPU with "a Neural Accelerator in each core," and a 16-core NPU for on-device AI. The M5 chip is built on TSMC's N3P node and has a faster GPU that can deliver 1.6x more FPS in games, 20% faster multi-core CPU performance, and 1.7x quicker render times in Blender -- all versus the M4. Apple even says it's 86x more powerful than Intel-based Macs in AI applications. The price for the new 14-inch MacBook Pro remains the same as last year, with the base model starting at $1,599, offering you a 512 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM. Keep in mind that, just like M4, the base M5 isn't available on the 16-inch models as they start out with a Pro chip (so, presumably M5 Pro). The device is available to pre-order right away, with general availability beginning next week on October 22. Alongside the MacBook Pro, Apple also refreshed the Vision Pro and the iPad Pro with the new M5 chip. The tablet gets Apple's in-house C1X modem and N1 networking chip that brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support, offering faster connectivity across the board with 30% less power usage compared to the M4 iPad Pro. On the other hand, the mixed reality headset now has a new Dual Knit headband, also available for purchase separately for $99. Therefore, M5's improvements in performance, battery life, and AI-powered workflows are present on the Vision Pro and iPad Pro as well. Accompanying that is the fresh software for each of these devices, including the MacBook Pro, with the latest OS versions adding newer features and, of course, the Liquid Glass visual overhaul. Prices remain the same as last gen for both the iPad and Vision Pro as well.

Apple reveals what's powering its new MacBook Pro, and it's a beast
Summary M5 is AI-first: a 10-core GPU with per-core Neural Accelerators, delivering significant gains in AI and graphics. New 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5: up to 3.5x AI, 1.6x faster graphics, 24-hour battery, up to 4TB SSD. Available Oct 22, starts at $1,599 -- preorders open on the Apple Store. Apple fans woke up today with a huge wave of news to check out. The company revealed more information about its new Vision Pro and its iPad, but it wasn't done there. Among the news was details on a brand new MacBook Pro, and while the device itself is looking pretty sleek, what I'm interested in is what's powering it: the mighty new M5 chip. Apple pulls back the curtain on the M5 Before we tuck into the MacBook Pro news, let's take a look at that new M5 chip. Apple states that it's a 10-core GPU with a graphics performance that's "up to 45 percent higher than M4" and "nearly 30 percent increase in unified memory bandwidth," up to 153GB/s. However, one recurring theme we see in this press release is AI. In fact, every header except the environmental impact statement is somehow tied to AI. And once you dig into the guts of the M5, you begin to see why. As Apple explains: With the next-generation GPU architecture in M5, every compute block of the chip is optimized for AI. The 10-core GPU features a dedicated Neural Accelerator in each core, delivering over 4x peak GPU compute compared to M4, and over 6x peak GPU compute for AI performance compared to M1.1 And now with M5, the new 14-inch MacBook Pro and iPad Pro benefit from dramatically accelerated processing for AI-driven workflows, such as running diffusion models in apps like Draw Things, or running large language models locally using platforms like webAI. Apple claims that this chip not only chews through AI processes like nothing before it, but it also does so with greater power efficiency. That means you can try out features like Apple Intelligence with quicker processing times, and it's a huge focus for the Cupertino giant right now. Apple also unveils the new MacBook Pro with an M5 chip Now that we know of the beast that lurks within the MacBook Pro, let's take a closer look at the device itself. With the M5 chip, this new MacBook Pro can perform "up to 3.5x the AI performance and up to 1.6x faster graphics," according to the press release, which places a significant focus on AI tools. In fact, a sizable portion of the press release is dedicated to mentioning all the AI tools that will benefit from the M5's speed boost, including Draw Things and LM Studio. However, if you're not interested in AI, M5 still has something for you. Apple claims that it provides twice the SSD performance as the M4 chip, and the new MacBook Pro can now store up to 4TB of SSD storage as an option. The MacBook Pro can also handle graphical tasks more efficiently, boasting "up to 1.6x faster graphics performance in pro apps and enables up to 1.6x higher frame rates" for 3D-related tasks. Additionally, the new MacBook Pro boasts a 24-hour battery life, ensuring it can continue to operate for extended periods, regardless of the task at hand. Apple even takes some time to target those upgrading from an M1 MacBook Pro. Apple claims this newer MacBook Pro delivers "up to 6x faster AI performance, up to 6.8x faster GPU performance with ray tracing, and up to 2x faster CPU performance," with four additional hours of battery life and fast charge. Apple announced that the MacBook Pro will be available starting at $1,599 and will be released on October 22nd. You can preorder it directly on the Apple Store website, with the 14-inch MacBook Pro being the only one currently supporting M5.

The MacBook Pro Now Has an M5 Chip and Faster Storage
Summary New M5 MacBook Pro boosts AI up to 3.5x, GPU 1.6x and CPU up to 20% faster than M4. Same 14-inch design, Liquid Retina XDR, 12MP Center Stage camera, six speakers, same ports. Configurable to 4TB storage (2x faster), up to 24 hours battery; starts at $1,600, ships Oct 22. Apple's MacBook Pro range is, quite likely, the best range of computers your money can buy. The M-series chips are really just that good. And now, with Apple unveiling the new M5 chip, the MacBook Pro series is getting upgraded with the new chip. Apple has just announced the latest revision to the 14-inch MacBook Pro. From the outside, it's identical -- the rumor mill says we should get a redesigned MacBook Pro next year, but that's not happening just yet, so we're just getting the exact same design we've gotten over the past few years. The M5 chip features a next-generation 10-core GPU, which now includes a Neural Accelerator within each core. According to Apple, this new architecture delivers up to 3.5 times the AI performance and up to 1.6 times faster graphics performance compared to the previous M4 chip. The SoC also includes an updated 10-core CPU, which, according to Apple, provides up to 20 percent faster multi-threaded performance than its predecessor. Further hardware improvements include an enhanced 16-core Neural Engine and over 150GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, designed to accelerate on-device tasks involving large language models (LLMs) and other AI workflows. When measured against the M4-equipped 14-inch model, the new M5 version shows up to a 1.8x performance increase in AI video enhancement in Topaz Video and a 1.7x increase in 3D rendering in Blender. These are, of course, Apple's own numbers, but if we can independently corroborate them, they're pretty impressive. For users upgrading from an M1-based MacBook Pro, Apple claims this is up to 6x faster in AI performance and up to 6.8x faster in GPU performance. Compared to older Intel-based models, Apple claims the M5 offers up to 86 times the AI performance and a 5.5x improvement in CPU performance. Of course, this is mostly comparing the new M5 chip to the older M4 chip, not against the M4 Pro or the M4 Max. You might still get better performance out of those higher-end chips, and Apple has yet to announce an M5 Pro or an M5 Max, though that might come within the next few months. Still, if you're rocking the base M4, this is better. The improvements on this new MacBook Pro aren't limited to just the chip. The laptop is configurable with up to 4TB of storage, and according to Apple, the storage here is twice as fast as previous generations, which should translate to considerable speed and performance gains, going even further than what the CPU upgrade alone would allow for. Apple also claims a battery life of up to 24 hours for the new model, which is pretty good. Other hardware specifications remain consistent with the previous generation, including the Liquid Retina XDR display, a 12MP camera with Center Stage, a six-speaker sound system, and the same exact selection of ports. This computer starts at $1,600, as is usually the case with new entry-level MacBook Pro models. It's now available for pre-order, and it will ship from next week, on October 22nd, so check it out now. Source: Apple
