Apple Watch Series 10 Adds Bigger and Thinner Screen, Sleep Apnea Detection
I've been with PCMag since October 2017, covering a wide range of topics, including consumer electronics, cybersecurity, social media, networking, and gaming. Prior to working at PCMag, I was a foreign correspondent in Beijing for over five years, covering the tech scene in Asia. The new Apple Watch Series 10 is here, boasting a bigger but thinner display that promises to be easier to read at a glance. "It's the thinnest Apple Watch ever, with our largest and most advanced display," Apple COO Jeff Williams said at today's iPhone 16 event. The Apple Watch Series 10 is available for preorder now and launches on Sept. 20, starting at $399 for the Wi-Fi model and $499 for the cellular version. Thanks to the larger display, which features 30% more screen real estate, the Apple Watch Series 10 can display slightly larger fonts and an additional line of text. The new screen also operates as a wide-angle OLED display, meaning it can emit more light at an angle, making it easier to quickly glance at information when looking at the watch from the side. Williams calls the screen "the largest and most advanced display ever for Apple Watch," saying it even slightly exceeds the 1.9-inch display size on the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The screen is 9.7mm thick, or about 10% thinner than last year's Apple Watch Series 9. To pull this off, Apple miniaturized some of the internal components even more, including the speaker, which has been reduced in size by 30%. Despite the size reduction, the audio on the Apple Watch is powerful enough that the company will let customers play music and podcasts directly from the speaker itself, an apparent first. In addition, the Watch Series 10 features an improved charging coil, enabling you to charge the device by up to 80% in a mere 30 minutes. The product will also come in either aluminum or a pricier polished titanium casing, with Apple seemingly ditching the stainless steel frames. Inside the Watch Series 10 is the S10 chip to help power AI and health tracking features. This includes the device's upcoming ability to detect if you suffer from sleep apnea by analyzing suspected breathing disturbances as you sleep. The company plans on enabling the capability later this month, pending FDA approval, on the Series 10, Series 9, and Ultra 2. Despite all the enhancements, the Series 10 isn't offering a major leap in terms of battery life. Expect the product to offer 18 hours of battery on a single charge, or the same amount as the Apple Watch Series 9. Cupertino also didn't reveal a new Apple Watch SE model or an Apple Watch Ultra 3. Instead, the company merely debuted a new "satin black" titanium color for the Ultra Watch 2, which is also available for preorder now ahead of a Sept. 20 launch.

The new Apple Watch Series 10 was just announced. Here's where to pre-order it
CBS Essentials is created independently of the CBS News editorial staff. We may receive commissions from some links to products on this page. Promotions are subject to availability and retailer terms. The Apple Watch Series 10 is finally here. Well, almost. The latest wearable from Apple doesn't officially hit shelves until September 20, but fans can already get their preorders locked in at Amazon and other retailers. Featuring a lighter, thinner design and Apple's largest display yet, the latest Apple Watch is easier to see, easier to navigate and more comfortable to wear around the clock. The completely overhauled device doesn't just look and feel different. It's also packed with more powerful tech, including the latest Apple AI, which makes it a better fitness tracker and an even more impressive sidekick in your daily life. Tap the button below to preorder the new Apple Watch Series 10 right now, or keep reading to learn more about all the upgrades you can look forward to on the new smartwatch. While the new Apple Watch 10 doesn't officially drop until September 20, pre-orders have already opened. So you can head to the website now to get your order in for the Apple Watch 10 and any other new Apple tech you've been waiting for. Prices start at $399 for the 42mm Apple Watch 10 or $429 for the 46mm size. Like its predecessors, shoppers will be able to choose from a GPS only or GPS + Cellular version. (Note that your cell provider will likely charge a monthly fee for connecting the watch to cellular service.) The biggest upgrades to the latest smartwatch from Apple are in its design. The larger display is up to 30% bigger than previous generations. It's even bigger than the screen on the Apple Watch Ultra 2. In addition to being bigger, it also uses as wide-angle OLED display. That makes for a crisper, brighter display that you can see clearly from a wider range of angles, even if you only have a quick second to glance down at your wrist. The screen may be bigger but the smartwatch itself is lighter. At 9.7mm thick, it's about 10% thinner than the Apple Watch 9 and lighter. So you get the easier-to-see screen you want and the lightweight design you need to be able to wear this comfortably all day and all night. Speaking of night, the new Apple Watch 10 is equipped with the ability to detect signs of sleep apnea while you're sleeping. This feature is still awaiting FDA clearance, but the brand said it's expecting to roll it out in over 150 countries later this month. Once it's officially launched, the sleep apnea tracking will use the accelerometer on the watch to measure breathing disturbances. Every 30 days, it will analyze and compile that data into a report. If it detects signs of possible sleep apnea, it'll send you an alert so that you can share that report with your doctor. Since an estimated 80% of obstructive sleep apnea cases remain undiagnosed, this new feature may play a big role in helping people get the diagnosis and treatment they need to sleep better and reduce their risk of heart, kidney and metabolic health complications that are linked to the condition. Users will also enjoy other cool health and fitness upgrades, like improved auto-detection of your activities, new performance metrics, and new features like offline maps for hiking. Top features of the new Apple Watch Series 10: While Apple won't be dropping the third generation Apple Watch Ultra this year, the tech giant did announce a new finish on the current Apple Watch Ultra 2. The new satin black finish is accompanied by a new Titanium Milanese band and new color options for the existing bands. Like the Apple Watch 10, the new finish and bands for the Apple Watch Ultra 2 won't hit shelves until September 20. But you can preorder it today. Prices start at $799 for the matte black Apple Watch Ultra 2.

The best new health and fitness features in the Apple Watch 10, including sleep apnea detection
CBS Essentials is created independently of the CBS News editorial staff. We may receive commissions from some links to products on this page. Promotions are subject to availability and retailer terms. This week, Apple unveiled its latest slate of mobile tech, including the new Apple iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Max, along with the all-new AirPods 4 and upgraded AirPods Max headphones. However, one of the most impressive items from Apple's announcement is the revamped Apple Watch Series 10, launching on Sept. 20. The tenth-generation Apple Watch is thinner and lighter than previous models, with a bigger screen. While there are tons of things to be excited about on the new wearable, some of our favorite things about the Apple Watch 10 are its new health and fitness features. A brand new AI engine powers new features like sleep apnea detection, along with more accurate crash and fall detection and exercise tracking. Tap the button below to pre-order the latest Apple Watch now, or read on to learn more about these new health and fitness features. One of the most hyped features of the Apple Watch 10 is its new sleep apnea detection ability. This feature is still awaiting FDA clearance, but the brand said it's expecting to roll it out in over 150 countries later this month. Once it's officially launched, the sleep apnea tracking feature will use the watch's accelerometer to measure breathing disturbances, while simultaneously tracking your heart rate and wrist temperature. It will analyze and compile that data into a report every 30 days. If it detects signs of sleep apnea, it'll send you an alert so that you can share the report with your doctor. Studies say an estimated 80% of obstructive sleep apnea cases remain undiagnosed, so this new feature may play a big role in helping people get the diagnosis and treatment they need to sleep better and reduce their risk of the heart, kidney and metabolic health complications linked to the condition. Users will also enjoy other cool health and fitness upgrades, like improved auto-detection of your activities, new performance metrics, and new features like offline maps for hiking. In an industry-first, the new smartwatch will be able to auto-detect when you're running on a track, so you can strap on your Noah Lyles-inspired Adidas and start running laps without worrying that your watch will track it as a regular run. You'll get all your lap count and lap-by-lap metrics without having to manually set it to track workout. Swimmers get the same 50-meter water resistance as the Apple Watch 9, but you'll now be able to use your water-resistant smartwatch to track strokes and count laps for you in the pool. Wear it on your next snorkeling trip, too: The Apple Watch 10 comes with a built-in Depth app that can measure down to six meters. It'll also measure and display water temperature when you're tracking a pool swim or open water swim workout. The new Apple Watch 10 hits shelves on September 20, and prices start at $399. But you can preorder yours now.

The Apple Watch Has a Whole New Look
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Apple Watch, the top-selling rectangular wearable that can be seen on the wrists of millions of iPhone owners. As befits a landmark anniversary, this year's flagship Apple Watch 10 has gotten an updated design that is much thinner and lighter than the previous Watch Series 9, along with a new, jet black finish. (Everyone says they want a pink watch, but I love black!) Every year, Apple adds new health features to the watch. This year, that feature is sleep apnea detection. (We first reported that the company was working on machine learning algorithms for sleep apnea detection in 2017.) The most highly-anticipated health feature was tracking for hypertension, or high blood pressure, and that has not shown up on the Apple Watch yet -- probably because earlier this year, Apple was ordered to stop selling watches with blood oxygen sensing because of a patent dispute with Masimo Corp. The Watch Ultra 2 didn't get a big update, but instead gets some new styling. It now also comes in a new black finish, along with a new black Milanese loop that is designed specifically for water sports. On the screen, users will get a whole new slew of water sports related features. It's worth noting here, though, that even though this watch looks amazing, you might not want to lose blood oxygen sensing if you have an older model, which arrived with the Watch Series 6. Most of the exciting new updates, like Apple Intelligence and new comprehensive health algorithms, arrive on the watch via the phone app and WatchOS 11 anyway. The Series 10 is available for preorder today for $399 and will ship on September 20. The redesigned Watch Ultra 2 is also available for preorder today at $799 and is available on September 20. The Watch Series 10 is markedly thinner and lighter than its predecessor, the Series 9. Apple says it has the biggest wearable display Apple has ever built, even bigger than the already huge Watch Ultra, and it has the company's first-ever wide-angle OLED display that is 40 percent brighter than its predecessor, designed to be read at any time and from any angle. Despite its increase, Apple says it's almost 10 percent lighter than the Series 9. It has new rounded corners that make it look much softer, along with a brand new, jet black, aluminum finish that has been polished with silicon nanoparticles to make it reflective. (Don't worry, it still comes in the popular rose gold and silver.) It also features new hardware upgrades to make it thinner and lighter. Most notable are a new metal backing that integrates the antenna into the housing, and new thin speakers that can actually play music and podcasts. There's also a larger, and more efficient charging coil that can take the battery up to 80 percent in 30 minutes and a new S10 SIP designed for power efficiency. (No word if the battery life itself is actually getting better, though.) A new watch face called Flux takes advantage of the large, sparkly display. The Watch Ultra 2 also has a few upgrades, including a new black finish with matching new titanium hardware, including a black Milanese band that is designed specifically for underwater water sports. This year, any Apple Watch in any finish can be carbon neutral, according to Apple. Apple really wants the Apple Watch to be seen as a comprehensive health device, and it takes another step in that direction with sleep apnea detection. Sleep apnea is a condition where you stop and start breathing as you sleep, which reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood. It is commonly undiagnosed and can lead to life-threatening events like a stroke or a heart attack. The company uses the watch's accelerometer and machine intelligence to monitor your sleep disturbances over the course of 30 days and warn you (and/or your partner) that you might have sleep apnea.

Apple Watch Series 10 is smaller, thinner, lighter, and has some Intelligence
No word on whether S10 chip inside will allow for broader AI features. The newest Apple Watch is all about a big screen, a thinner case, and lighter metal options, allowing for better typing, and easier viewing. Apple's first wide-angle OLED display inside the Series 10 is 40% brighter than the Series 9. It allows for a wider variety of viewing angles. Its refresh rate when idle can update information from apps and complications once a second, instead of the existing once a minute rate. The 9.7 mm case, the thinnest Watch so far, required miniaturization of various components, including the speaker, logic board, and metal backing. The aluminum version weighs 10 percent less than the previous generation. The titanium version, replacing stainless steel, shaves even more weight off the Watch than the already reduced Series 10. The S10 chip powering the Series 10 promises to improve speeds at responding to actions, Apple claims, and can improve noise and feedback during calls you take over the Watch's speaker. A few existing tools, like Translate, can now run natively on the Watch, and fitness features should be similarly boosted. Leaked CAD drawings and analysts had suggested the Apple Watch Series 10 was due for major changes. That could have meant new sizes (45 mm and 49 mm), a slimmed-down case made possible by resin-coated copper boards, or a new magnetic attachment system for wristbands, which would have saved even more space inside the case. Series 10 uses the same style of slide-in bands as prior Apple Watches, so the new band system may be held off for a future update. The Apple Watch did not pick up the sleep apnea and hypertension detection that has been ready for the hardware, but blocked by a patent dispute over blood oxygen monitoring. This is a developing story and will be updated with new information.
