It also largely uses reminders as examples of recurring tasks, and I would advise against following OpenAI's example. Your phone, calendar, or any number of other services already exist to set reminders, so I'd advise against using ChatGPT to do so and deplete your ten-task limit. Instead, use your scheduled tasks for more substantial requests. Start With a Simple Request, Then Edit the Task Though your requests should end up substantial, I find it far easier to start with something simple, such as "Give me the most recent news in the United States and world every morning" in the initial prompt before further elaboration. Because you can edit tasks after making them, you can add much more specificity to the scheduled task, such as editing its instructions, title, and frequency. While I didn't do this in my testing, I would also recommend using separate conversations for each task. As I scrolled through multiple days of scheduled task output, I was annoyed at how much I had to go through to see the output I received even a couple of days ago on a particular task. Consequently, unless the scheduled tasks you ask for are related to each other, you're probably better off siloing them into separate conversations or projects. Provide Specific Instructions for the Best Results To create the best outcome for your ChatGPT tasks, the usual best practices for prompt engineering still apply. Provide boundaries, specific elements of the task you're asking for, and any clarifying or contextual details you'd otherwise need for a good prompt. Because this model is simply a modified version of GPT-4o, treat your instructions the same way you'd treat any prompt, though frame the prompt in a way that might give different results on each query. For example, in my daily news stories summarization task, I specified US and world news, summarizing each story, considering future implications, seeking related stories, providing links, telling the truth, and writing with no opinion or political slant. Regarding links, some specific prompt wrangling can get you higher-quality sources, too. Likewise, I included formatting requirements as well for additional specificity. In the news story example, I asked for an overall news summary at 3-6 sentences in length, for each story to have a heading, and for each subsection to use bullet points. ChatGPT did what the prompt requested in each instance, and the format never changed. I also experimented with other formats for this. For example, I asked it to brainstorm ideas for my YouTube channel, and I requested that the format be a table with four columns, including idea, summary, justification, and sources. It performed similarly well when making this table, with no deviation from day-to-day. Implementing formatting into your prompts makes them much easier to read and skim, which is especially important for scheduled tasks you'd be reading regularly. Remember, It's Still ChatGPT The scheduled tasks function uses OpenAI's GPT-4o model, so all limitations of this model apply to this function. For example, if asking for regular brainstorming ideas, you might get generic, repetitive responses. In my example, asking for YouTube video ideas, even though I specifically prompted ChatGPT to remember the ideas it's given me and avoid repetition, the ideas it provided were quite repetitive. In a few of these news stories, the links were bogus and only led to the front page of a news website. Most links were valid and told true stories, and I received different results each day, unlike the brainstorming prompts. Nevertheless, I wouldn't rely on ChatGPT for wholly accurate news yet. While the scheduled tasks feature is a bit clunky in its beta iteration, it will improve with time, especially if it uses a more up-to-date GPT model. I foresee a great deal of utility in applying automation to an AI model, and I imagine my ideas have only scratched the surface of how people can use this function. ChatGPT is taking a big step towards becoming your go-to digital assistant with its new Tasks feature. With it, you can set reminders and recurring tasks with the bot. Mind you, this won't replace your Reminders app: The Tasks feature is currently only in beta, and is available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users on iOS, Android, macOS, or on the web. OpenAI also plans to release this feature to everyone with a free ChatGPT account, when the stable release rolls out. ChatGPT Tasks can be used to set simple reminders, like you'd ask Google Assistant or Siri, and the ChatGPT app will send you a notification with the reminder in question. But what's more interesting are the recurring tasks. You can do some prompt engineering and ask ChatGPT to do tasks for you at a particular time every day, or once a week, and it will perform those actions for you. And because it can trigger any prompt at a given time, you can ask it to do things like summarize the day's news (pulling from the open web using ChatGPT Search), create a new 10-minute workout each day, or give you a motivational quote every morning. You can create a new task from any conversation, but it might be better to create a new conversation for this. When you're in the conversation view, click the ChatGPT model option at the top, and switch to GPT-4o with scheduled tasks option. Write out your reminder or a recurring task. In my testing, I found that this works best when your prompts are detailed. Then, ChatGPT will show you a new task box. You can click on the task box to expand it. In my experiments, I found you have to be very specific in your instructions. For example, if you're asking it to produce a list of news stories on a specific topic you have to specify that the list should only include stories with a publication date in a set timeframe (say 24 hours). It also helps to include some negative prompting such as what you don't want it to include and to specify the format it should display the information. One example of this could be in stocks where you ask it to display the 10 best-performing tech stocks of the past 24 hours with change over 24, 48 and 72 hours displayed in a table. This is more of an extension to the be specific requirement, but basically, if you want it to use the ChatGPT Search function in your task, make sure you specify it. The same applies if you want it to generate an image and send it at a set time. Outline exactly how you want the information to be displayed. For example, if you want it to generate a dozen jokes every evening to share over dinner, you might ask for it in a bullet list. If you want to have it create a report on air quality in five cities, you'd specify a table as the output. You can always just re-prompt it or ask for specific changes once the first report comes back. Or, you can just use the prompt without the task and see what ChatGPT produces, as that will be more or less what you get with the timed response. If it comes back looking like a garbled mess, keep refining the prompt until you get exactly what you are looking for, then paste that exact prompt into ChatGPT with Tasks + a date and time. This is an early beta of a new feature that in future could see the AI able to send emails on your behalf to certain people at certain times, make updates within another application or add events to your calendar, retrieve events and even go to meetings for you and send a summary.

Now with tasks, I can harness the power of ChatGPT's memory functionality and dump everything that comes to my brain onto the app so I can focus on the things that matter most instead of remembering the mundane. I have been waiting for ChatGPT to have notifications on iOS with reminders and tasks for a very long time, so much so that I could be tempted to pay the hefty $20 / £16 / $AU 32 monthly subscription fee for a Plus account just to get early access. One of my most anticipated AI tools of 2025 is the major Apple Intelligence update coming to Siri as part of iOS 18.4 in a few months. That update gives Siri personal context and on-screen awareness so it can function as your on-device AI-powered personal assistant. While not built into iOS in the same way, ChatGPT tasks as part of the ChatGPT app or accessed through Siri integration could make OpenAI's chatbot your go-to for all your everyday needs. Combined with a souped-up Siri, I'm beyond excited at the prospect of AI taking control of my day-to-day life in 2025 so I can focus on the things that matter most, like drinking coffee and eating pizza.

There are many reminder, calendar and productivity apps available for both consumers and enterprises. These include Google Calendar, Outlook Calendar, Asana, Trello and Notion. The productivity assistant space is not short of applications that remind individuals and teams of tasks they must accomplish. OpenAI's big play in such a crowded space is interesting, especially since most people don't think of chatbots as scheduling assistants. But ChatGPT already streamlines the process for users to migrate their coding or writing tasks to the platform or search the web without leaving the chat interface. The system has generated several erroneous notifications that have raised serious concerns. For instance, it falsely reported that Luigi Mangione, accused of a high-profile murder, had died by suicide when, in fact, he is alive and incarcerated. Many feel that Google should have provided this feature before OpenAI. "Most people use Gmail, Docs, Google Maps, and Google Calendar above Apple's alternatives. Gemini could really tie them up well," a user said on Hacker News. Notably, Gemini is embedded within major Google Workspace apps, including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and Meet. This allows users to access AI tools directly within the applications they already use, minimising the need for external tools or extensions.
