Epic Games Unveils AI-Powered Tools and New IP Integrations for Fortnite's Unreal Editor

Star Wars, Squid Game, and more coming to Unreal Editor in Fortnite

ORLANDO, Fla. - Fortnite creators will soon have a lot more toys to play with in Unreal Editor in Fortnite (UEFN). At the State of Unreal keynote today at Unreal Fest 2025, Epic Games announced a slew of new IP-based assets for the popular level creation tool. Content from the hit Netflix show Squid Game will be coming to UEFN on June 27 alongside the release of the series finale. Creators will also get to use features, templates, and assets from Avatar: The Last Airbender next year. Last but not least, Star Wars will also be added to UEFN at a future date and allow players to tell their own stories in the Star Wars universe. And fresh off the heels of the (controversial) inclusion of an AI-powered Darth Vader that responds to players' conversations in Fortnite, Epic revealed that creators will be able to make their own responsive AI characters using the new Persona Device in UEFN. This isn't the first time Fortnite creators have had access to licensed IP materials. Last year, Epic Games added Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to UEFN, and most recently added The Walking Dead. The company also revealed that the Epic Digital Assistant, an AI feature that helps developers write lines of code in Verse (the programming language used in UEFN) using prompts, is available now in beta on the Epic Developer Community site. On the Fortnite Lego front, a new Lego Brick Editor is launching on June 17, which comes with 50 classic bricks in 42 different colors, allowing people to build new islands brick-by-brick. Since the launch of UEFN in 2023, Epic Games said that players have spent more than 11.2 billion hours across 260,000 user-made islands. About $722 million has been paid out to creators as a result.

Right before the State of Unreal 2025 announcement, the official Fortnite account teased on social media a new collab with Squid Game. The Squid Game crossover is slated for release later this month (June 2025). The Fortnite Competitive X account also reacted to this with an emoji. While there is no confirmation, Fortnite could do a competitive limited-time event or a mini-season for the launch of Squid Game Season 3. This collaboration will also introduce Squid Game-themed tools to the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). This assistant aids creators by providing code snippets, workflow guidance, and answers to development queries, enhancing productivity and reducing development time. Moreover, the assistant will be running on the GPT 4.1 model. In addition to Squid Game collaboration in Fortnite, Epic announced the integration of other popular IPs into UEFN: Building upon the success of the Darth Vader AI NPC introduced in Fortnite's Galactic Battle season, Epic is expanding AI capabilities within UEFN. The NPC takes full advantage of conversational AI and gives visual storytelling a new dynamic. And it goes further with the new Persona Device. The Persona Device lets the creators within UEFN the power to create characters with personalities that players can talk to. Creators can customize NPC voice, delivery, and characteristics. During today's State of Unreal presentation, Epic provided an overview of what is coming to UEFN, which has proven to be extremely popular, with players having spent over 11.2 billion hours across 260,000 live creator-made islands since its release two years ago. To make the Editor even more enticing for developers, new tools and IPs are coming soon, starting with the LEGO Brick Editor coming on June 17th, creation elements inspired by Squid Game on June 27th, the same day the third and final season of the show debuts on Netflix worldwide, and Avatar: The Last Airbender and Star Wars, both launching on yet to be confirmed release dates. Based on the technology that powered the AI-powered Darth Vader seen during the latest Season of Fortnite Battle Royale: GALACTIC BATTLE, new tools for the creation of similar NPCs will be coming to the Fortnite Unreal Editor later this year. Creators will be able to use the new Persona Device to create characters with full-blown personalities that players can interact with. Another AI tool coming to UEFN is the Epic Developer Assistant, which is actually already available in beta on the Epic Developer Community. The AI-powered assistant will help creators write Verse code that can be used in UEFN projects while also providing ideas, workflow guidance, and more to speed up the Fortnite island development process. The last new Fortnite Unreal Editor feature coming soon is Scene Graph, which is launching in beta on June 7th, and is setting out to become the new foundational layer for UEFN.
