Farewell to Pocket, Hello Curated News

Following the discontinuation of the Pocket service in July, Firefox 142 introduces a curated news overview on the New Tab page. This feature organizes news by topic, allowing users to customize their experience by selecting or deselecting specific areas of interest. The rollout of this feature is gradual and may take a few days to reach all users 12.

AI-Powered Link Previews

One of the most notable additions is the AI-driven link preview feature. Users can now right-click on a link to access a preview of the destination page's content. Optionally, a local AI can provide a summary of the linked page, offering users a quick understanding of the content without navigating away from their current page 12.

Enhanced Profile Management and Interface Customization

Firefox 142 builds upon the extended profile management introduced in version 138. Users now have access to 28 icon options for profile customization, a significant increase from the previous six. Additionally, users can upload their own icons for a more personalized experience 12.

The update also refines the vertical tabs feature introduced in Firefox 136. Users can now right-click on add-on icons in the sidebar to manage their visibility, providing greater control over the browser interface 2.

Privacy and Security Enhancements

Mozilla continues to prioritize user privacy with Firefox 142. All AI features are implemented locally, ensuring that user data is not transmitted to external servers or cloud services. This approach sets Firefox apart from other major browsers that may collect user data for advertising purposes 2.

The update also introduces an exceptions list for the strictest tracking protection. Users can now selectively disable tracking protection for specific websites where it may interfere with functionality, balancing privacy with usability 12.

Security Vulnerabilities Addressed

Firefox 142 addresses at least nine identified vulnerabilities, with two externally reported high-risk issues:

  1. CVE-2025-9179: A vulnerability in the audio/video component for DRM-protected content that could potentially allow malicious code to break out of the browser sandbox 2.
  2. CVE-2025-9180: A flaw in the Canvas2D graphics component that could be exploited to bypass the same-origin policy 2.

Three internally discovered high-risk vulnerabilities (CVE-2025-9184, CVE-2025-9185, and CVE-2025-9187) have also been addressed, along with several medium and low-risk issues 2.

Looking Ahead

With these updates, Firefox 142 demonstrates Mozilla's ongoing commitment to innovation, user privacy, and security. The integration of AI features, coupled with enhanced customization options and robust security measures, positions Firefox as a strong contender in the modern browser landscape. Users can expect the next update, Firefox 143, to be released on September 16th, 2025 2.
