LightOn's Expansion Strategy

French AI company LightOn is setting its sights on expansion into Europe and the Middle East, with a focus on sectors that demand high levels of data security. Laurent Daudet, co-CEO of LightOn, revealed the company's plans to target industries such as banking, defense, high-tech, healthcare, and insurance – all of which require their data to be protected on local servers 12.

LightOn, which recently made history as Europe's first listed generative AI company on the Euronext Growth exchange, is particularly interested in penetrating markets in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and neighboring countries 1. This move comes as the Middle East region increasingly looks towards AI to diversify its economy and reduce reliance on oil revenue 1.

Secure AI Solutions and Partnerships

The company's expansion strategy aligns with growing demand for secure, localized AI solutions. Orange, one of LightOn's partners, highlighted this trend, noting that their customers are seeking French-trusted AI solutions. Steve Jarrett, Orange's AI Chief, explained:

"Either they have particular governmental regulation restrictions, or they made their own business decision and would rather have the AI models running in an Orange data centre as opposed to a public cloud" 12.

LightOn's customer base already includes notable entities such as Safran and the French Space Command, demonstrating its capability to serve high-security sectors 12.

European Identity as a Competitive Advantage

Unlike some of its French AI counterparts like Mistral, Hugging Face, or Dataiku, which have raised funding from U.S. tech giants, LightOn chose to raise capital through a European listing 12. This decision underscores the company's commitment to its European identity, which Daudet believes could be advantageous in certain markets:

"Being European in this type of geography is interesting, it allows us to be neutral in the war of the giants that the Americans and the Chinese are waging, that can be an interesting position" 12.

Challenges and Future Plans

Despite its ambitious expansion plans, LightOn faces significant challenges. Daudet acknowledged the fierce competition from larger generative AI players such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Mistral 12. To address this, the company is actively seeking international distribution partnerships to bolster its market presence and competitiveness 12.

As LightOn moves forward with its expansion strategy, it aims to capitalize on the growing demand for secure, localized AI solutions while leveraging its European identity to carve out a unique position in the global AI market.
