Industry-Wide Layoffs Impact Game Developers

The 2025 Game Developers Conference (GDC) State of the Game Industry survey, which gathered responses from over 3,000 developers, has revealed the significant impact of industry-wide layoffs. Approximately one in eleven developers (11%) reported being laid off in the past year, a notable increase from 7% in the previous year 12. The survey found that 41% of developers felt the impact of these layoffs, with 29% witnessing direct colleagues being let go and 18% observing layoffs in other teams 3.

The narrative field was the most affected, with 19% of respondents in this area reporting job losses 2. Reasons cited for layoffs included restructuring (22%), declining revenue (18%), and market or industry shifts (15%) 3. Concerningly, 19% of developers reported not being given a reason for their layoff by their company 3.

Growing Skepticism Towards AI in Game Development

The survey highlighted an increasing skepticism towards artificial intelligence (AI) in game development. Thirty percent of respondents believe that generative AI is having a negative impact on the games industry, a 12% increase from the previous year 23. Developers expressed concerns about intellectual property theft, energy consumption, decreased quality of AI-generated content, potential biases in AI programs, and regulatory issues 23.

Despite these reservations, 52% of respondents reported that their companies have implemented generative AI in some capacity 13. The use of AI tools was most prevalent in business and finance (51%), followed by production and team leadership (41%), and community, marketing, and PR (39%) 2.

Shift Towards PC Game Development

A significant trend revealed by the survey is the increased focus on PC game development. The number of developers working on PC games rose from 66% in 2024 to 80% in 2025 12. This surge in PC development could be attributed to the popularity of Valve's Steam Deck, with 44% of developers expressing interest in the platform 2.

Live-Service Games and Funding Challenges

The survey indicated a growing disinterest in developing live-service games. Forty-two percent of respondents stated they weren't interested in creating such titles 2. Developers cited concerns about declining player interest, creative stagnation, predatory practices, and the risk of burnout 2.

Funding remains a significant challenge for many developers. One anonymous developer noted, "Unless you have something that will be live-service or the potential to be super viral, it's not easy to find a publisher" 1. This sentiment reflects the ongoing struggle for developers to secure funding for projects that don't fit the live-service or viral potential mold.

Unionization Efforts and Working Conditions

The survey also touched on the topic of unionization. One-fifth of respondents (22%) reported discussing unionization at their companies in the past 12 months 3. Of those who had such discussions, 29% said their companies were supportive, while 19% reported mixed reactions and 12% faced opposition 23.

Regarding working hours, 57% of respondents reported working 40 hours or less per week. However, 13% said they work more than 51 hours per week, an increase from 8% in the previous year 2.
