Google introduces new AI-driven tools for vacation planning across its platforms, including screenshot analysis in Maps, AI-generated itineraries in Search, and expanded language support for AI Overviews.

Google Maps Introduces AI-Powered Screenshot Analysis

Google is rolling out a new feature in Google Maps that leverages AI to help users plan their vacations more efficiently. The screenshot list feature allows users to feed screenshots of places they're interested in visiting into the Maps app. Gemini, Google's AI, then scans these images to identify locations mentioned in the text, rather than using image recognition 1.

Users can review the AI-detected locations and save them to a list, which will then be displayed on the map for easy visualization of their travel plans. This feature is opt-in and is launching first on iOS in the United States, with Android support coming soon 2.

AI-Generated Itineraries in Google Search

Google Search is expanding its AI Overviews feature to assist with comprehensive trip planning. Users can now input queries like "create an itinerary for Costa Rica with a focus on nature," and the AI will generate a snapshot of information including sightseeing and dining options across the entire country or region 5.

The generated itineraries include photos, reviews from other users, and an expandable map of recommended locations. Users can export these recommendations to Google Docs or Gmail, or save them as a custom list in Google Maps 3.

Expanded Language Support for AI Overviews

Google is broadening the accessibility of its AI-powered features by expanding language support for AI Overviews in Google Lens and Circle to Search. In addition to English, the feature will soon be available in Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish in most countries where AI Overviews are accessible 5.

Hotel Price Tracking and Gemini Integration

To further assist with travel planning, Google is introducing hotel price tracking similar to its existing flight price tracking feature. Users can now set up alerts for hotel price drops in chosen destinations and dates, with notifications sent via email when prices decrease significantly 2.

Additionally, Google is making Gemini's Gems feature available to everyone for free. This tool allows users to create custom AI experts within Gemini, including a personalized trip planner that can suggest destinations and packing lists 2.

Rollout and Availability

The new features are being rolled out gradually across Google's platforms. The screenshot list feature in Maps is available this week for iOS users in the US, with Android support coming soon. AI Overviews for trip planning in Search are accessible for English language queries in the US on both mobile and desktop. Hotel price tracking is launching globally this week on mobile and desktop browsers 4.

As Google continues to integrate AI into its travel planning tools, users gain access to more sophisticated and personalized vacation planning assistance across multiple platforms.
