Google Unveils Pixel 10 Pro Fold: A Durable and AI-Powered Foldable Smartphone

At its Made by Google 2025 event, the company unveiled its next foldable, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, alongside the rest of the new Pixel 10 line. The foldable comes with a new gearless hinge, camera improvements, and a Tensor G5 chip to deliver higher quality AI experiences. The device starts at $1,799 and is available in Moonstone and Jade. It features 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. The phone's new gearless hinge allows for a larger outer display with smaller bezels, and the hinge is two times more durable than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's hinge, Google says. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is capable of 10+ years of folding. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has the largest inner display on a foldable at 8 inches, plus a bigger 6.4-inch outer display thanks to smaller bezels. The 8-inch Super Actual Flex display inside has been re-engineered with resilient ultra-thin glass and dual layers of anti-impact films for added protection against drops. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has IP68 water and dust resistance for the first time, and its battery can last for up to 30 hours. Additionally, it reaches 50% in 30 minutes. Google also touts that both the inner and outer displays get 11% brighter than its predecessor, with a peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. Plus, the phone is the first foldable with Qi2 charging built in, the company says. With Google's new Pixelsnap magnetic technology that's built right into the phone, users can pop the "Pixelsnap Charger with Stand" onto their phone even when it's unfolded, or prop the phone up with the "Pixelsnap Ring Stand" for hands-free streaming. With Split Screen, users now have the option to resize their apps beyond the screen boundaries and adjust which app has more space on the screen with a tap. Google says this feature can be used to do things like drag a photo from Google Photos or a link from Chrome directly into Messages. Or, you could plan a trip with friends by comparing flight details in one app and checking hotel availability in another. In addition, there's a new game controller functionality on the outer display that lets users enjoy more immersive gaming in titles like "Asphalt Legends" and "Disney Speedstorm." Google has also optimized streaming on Netflix and Disney+ for immersive streaming on the go. As for the camera, a new Instant View feature lets you review your photos side by side on the unfolded inner screen right as you capture them. Plus, Dual Screen Preview lets everyone see themselves while posing, making it easier to capture the best photo, portrait, or video. The phone features a 48 MP wide camera, a 5x telephoto lens with Super Res Zoom up to 20x, and an ultrawide lens with Macro Focus. The company says this trio of cameras ensures users are always ready to get the perfect shot, whether it's using the rear camera selfie for selfies, getting up close and personal, or zooming way in. Google says The Tensor G5 marks the most significant upgrade to its chip since its debut five years ago, as it's built for the latest advancements in machine learning and AI. It delivers double-digit performance increases, including a TPU that's up to 60% more powerful and a CPU that's 34% faster on average to make web browsing or launching apps more smoothly. Tensor G5 is also the first chip to run Google's newest Gemini Nano model, unlocking over 20 generative AI experiences at launch, including Gemini Live, Magic Cue, and Daily Hub, plus powerful photography features, including Add Me, Best Take, and Camera Coach. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is available for pre-order starting today and hits shelves on October 9.

Pixel 10 Pro Fold Is Tougher, Smarter and Totally Dust-Resistant

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold may not look too different from Google's previous foldable phone, but it does bring some key improvements to areas like battery life and durability, while maintaining perhaps the most important aspect: the price. The 10 Pro Fold starts at $1,799 and will be available starting Oct. 9. Google unveiled its latest foldable, along with the rest of the Pixel 10 series, at its Made by Google event in New York on Wednesday. The rest of the lineup includes the baseline Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, which have an earlier Aug. 28 release date. Like the 10 Pro Fold, the Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Buds 2A hit store shelves on Oct. 9. Don't miss any of CNET's unbiased tech content and lab-based reviews. Add us as a preferred Google source on Chrome. Perhaps the most impressive feature on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is its IP68 rating. That means the phone is completely protected against dust and can be submerged in up to a meter and a half of water for 30 minutes -- the same level of particle and liquid resistance as most other premium phones. Foldables typically have little -- if any -- protection against granular solids; the last Pixel Fold didn't even have a rating for that, only for keeping out liquids. Samsung has also only been able to muster an IP48 rating for its Galaxy Z Fold 7, which means that phone can handle solid particles bigger than 1 millimeter but not dust. That makes Google's feat all the more impressive -- and welcome. You can hopefully take your foldable to the beach and not worry too much about sand getting in and ruining your pricey new device. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is about the same size as last year's Fold, albeit with a slightly larger 6.4-inch cover screen. The internal display remains at 8 inches. The phone is one gram heavier than the 9 Pro Fold, clocking in at 258g. The gearless hinge is designed to be more durable, Google says. The phone's front and back are made with Corning's Gorilla Glass Victus 2, just like the 9 Pro Fold. Both the cover and internal displays have a slightly higher 3,000 nits peak brightness, and a split screen mode makes it easier to multitask and quickly adjust app sizes with a tap. You can drag and drop media and files, like an image from Google Photos or a link from Chrome into Messages, essentially turning your Fold into a mini computer of sorts. The camera specs match those on last year's Fold. There's a 48-megapixel wide-angle, 10.5-megapixel ultrawide and 10.8-megapixel telephoto camera, as well as 10-megapixel selfie cameras on the inner and cover screens. But the Pixel 10 Pro Fold leans heavily into new AI capabilities to boost images. One of these new AI features, Camera Coach, taps Gemini to serve up tips on how to take a better shot. It might tell you to photograph your subject at a lower angle, or to work in more of the background, or even to switch to Portrait mode. I got to try out the feature at Google's campus in Mountain View, California, ahead of the Pixel 10 launch and was impressed with the tips it offered to really make subjects and architecture pop -- and I'd like to think of myself as an already good mobile photographer. Another feature, Auto Best Take, builds on the feature Google debuted with the Pixel 8, but instead of manually selecting which expressions to piece together for an ideal group photo, AI will now automatically surface one image where everyone looks their best. This is the AI update I'm perhaps most excited about; when I tried the feature, I was impressed at how seamlessly it pieced together the winning shot on its own. And Add Me, which uses augmented reality and AI to seemingly include the photographer in the shot, now works on even bigger groups. Powering all of this is the new Tensor G5 chip. Google says it allows for a smoother user experience and boosts photo and video quality. It's also what enables other on-device AI features like Magic Cue, which can pull up relevant information based on what you're doing. For example, if you're calling your airline, Magic Cue can show your flight details as soon as you dial or it might automatically bring up the address for your Airbnb when a friend asks for it. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has a 5,015-mAh battery, a notable boost over the 9 Pro Fold's 4,650-mAh capacity. Google says the 10 Pro Fold can last more than 30 hours and can reach 50% charge in 30 minutes. That's something we'll be sure to check out in CNET's battery and charging tests, so stay tuned for our review. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is also Qi2 certified if you'd rather go the wireless charging route. Magnets embedded in the phone, which Google calls PixelSnap, also make it easier to snap on wireless chargers, stands and other accessories -- much like the iPhone's MagSafe connector, though it's unclear if they're similar enough for magnetic accessories to work on both. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold may not have as revolutionary a design as the super-slim Galaxy Z Fold 7, but it appears to focus on the more practical, core features of a phone. According to a recent CNET survey, the top considerations when buying a new phone are price, battery life, storage and camera features. The 10 Pro Fold seemingly checks all those boxes. A $1,799 price tag isn't pocket change, but at least Google didn't hike the price, as Samsung did with its book-style foldable. The 10 Pro Fold also has a higher battery capacity than both last year's fold and the Z Fold 7. Google's new phone comes with a generous 16GB of RAM and either 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of storage. And while the camera specs match last year's Pixel Fold, a batch of new AI features help to elevate images. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold comes with seven years of OS and security updates to help stretch your dollars, which is the high-water mark for software security these days (Samsung also guarantees seven years of updates for its phones). Google's Pixel 10 Pro Fold Looks Boring, But It Took the Best Zoom Photo I've Seen

Prior to PCMag, I worked at outlets such as Android Authority, Fortune, InformationWeek, and Phonescoop. NEW YORK -- At today's Made by Google event, the tech giant unveiled a slate of new devices, including the Pixel Earbuds 2a, the Pixel Watch 4, and the latest Pixel 10 smartphones -- headlined by the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Unlike last year's major redesign of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Google has taken a more iterative approach this time. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold may look almost identical to its predecessor, but it brings a series of meaningful upgrades: a larger battery, a faster Tensor G5 chip, enhanced camera sensors, refined displays, and, notably, deeper integration with Google's powerful Gemini AI tools. I had a chance to get my hands on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold ahead of the event. Here's everything you need to know, including my first impressions of Google's newest flagship foldable. Design: Mostly the Same I have to admit, after spending time with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, one of the thinnest and lightest book-style folding phones yet, playing with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold was a bit of a letdown at first. The 10 Pro Fold is a sizable chunk of hardware with an "aerospace-grade, high-strength aluminum" frame and a new multi-alloy, gearless steel hinge covered by the same aluminum alloy. The outer display and rear panel are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which is one of the toughest available. Google says the phone is more resistant to scratches and breaking than last year's model. Perhaps the biggest design upgrade is the IP rating, which jumps from IPX8 to IP68. Google says the 10 Pro Fold is one of the first folding phones to reach IP68, which means it resists most dust and can handle a 30-minute dunk in up to about five feet of water. The Z Fold 7 is IP48, which leaves it exposed to dust particles smaller than 1mm. When folded, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold measures 6.1 by 3.0 by 0.4 inches (HWD), and when opened, it measures 6.1 by 5.9 by 0.2 inches. The phone weighs 9.1 ounces, which is heavier than most modern flagships, including the Z Fold 7, which weighs 7.6 ounces. That 1.5-ounce difference can really add up when a device spends hours in your pocket during the day. Google has tweaked both displays a little bit. Slimmer bezels around the outer screen allow it to grow from 6.3 inches to 6.4 inches with a 20:9 aspect ratio. It has 2,364 by 1,080 pixels for a density of 408 pixels per inch and a variable refresh rate from 60Hz to 120Hz. It supports HDR content and has 24-bit color for up to 16 million hues. HDR content shines with up to 2,000 nits, and Google raised the peak brightness by 11% to 3,000 nits. The inner Super Actua display stays the same size as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold at 8 inches and has the same resolution of 2,152 by 2,076 pixels at a density of 373ppi. It has a variable refresh rate of 1Hz to 120Hz and is slightly brighter with HDR brightness of 1,800 nits and peak brightness of 3,000 nits. Google says new dual layers of anti-impact films protect it better from scratches. Beyond these minor upgrades, the rest of the design is basically identical to the 9 Fold Pro. The phone has a power button on the right edge that doubles as a fingerprint reader. The volume toggle is below it. I would prefer these buttons to be reversed, but they perform well. The bottom edge holds a couple of microphones, the USB-C port, and the speaker grille. Google moved the SIM tray from the bottom edge to the top edge, where there is another microphone and another speaker grille. The phone also supports eSIM, but there's no memory card slot or 3.5mm headphone jack. Last year's colors were Obsidian (black) and Porcelain (white); this year's colors are Moonstone (gray) and Jade (light green). Although the lack of major changes to the design may be somewhat disappointing, there's no denying that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is a well-made device. The new hinge feels great, the metal and glass parts are top quality, and the refreshed screens are definitely bright. Under the Hood: A New Tensor and Pixelsnap We expect spec bumps each year, and we sure get them in the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The device ships with the Google-designed, TSMC-made Tensor G5, which relies on the latter's 3nm process. The Tensor G4 was a variant of a Samsung-made Exynos processor. The G5 has a new architecture, including revised CPU cores and an all-new ISP and DSP. Google claims the chip is 34% faster and more efficient than the G4 and can perform far more AI calculations on-device thanks to the revised TPU. Google specifically mentioned that the chip's GPU should be much better than older Tensors, which fall well short of competing chips at pushing polygons. The chip supports the latest LPDDR5x RAM memory and UFS 4.0 storage modules. All versions of the phone will have 16GB of RAM, the same as the 9 Pro Fold, and will be available with 256GB ($1,799), 512GB, or 1TB of storage. Google hasn't disclosed pricing for the 512GB and 1TB models yet. The 1TB option is new for this year. Perhaps the most interesting spec bump is the battery. Though Google didn't go into detail explaining how, the company found more room inside the chassis for a larger 5,015mAh battery (up from 4,650mAh). Moreover, it charges faster. It supports up to 30W wired charging with a compatible charging brick and 15W Qi2 wireless charging. And then there's Pixelsnap. Like the rest of the Pixel 10 lineup, the 10 Pro Fold supports Google's new Pixelsnap magnetic wireless charging tech (think MagSafe, but for Android). Further, it rolled out a host of Pixelsnap accessories, including magnetic cases, charging pucks, and charging stands. The 10 Pro Fold is compatible with all of them and can now power up much faster: plugging in for 30 minutes nets a 50% charge. Google says battery life should be improved from 24 hours to 30 hours. Last, but not least, the radios. The 10 Pro Fold supports sub-6GHz, C-band, and mmWave 5G, which means it supports the fastest networks available from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. It packs Wi-Fi 7, the latest Bluetooth 6 spec, dual-band GPS, NFC, and Ultra-Wideband. In the US, Pixel 10 Fold owners will be able to access the new generation of satellite-based emergency SOS services. Cameras: Generation AI A trio of cameras live in the raised sensor module on the phone's rear panel. The main camera has a 48MP sensor with quad pixel binning, an aperture of f/1.7, and an 82-degree field of view (FoV). The ultra-wide camera has a 10.5MP camera at f/2.2, and a 127-degree FoV. The telephoto camera has a 10.8MP sensor at f/3.1 and a 23-degree FoV. The latter has 5x optical zoom and 20x Super Res Zoom. All the cameras have multi-zone LDAF, and the main and telephoto cameras pack optical and electronic image stabilization. The selfie cameras appear to be carried over from the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Both have 10MP sensors at f/2.2 with an 87-degree FoV. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold includes all the fun and useful AI-based camera features we've seen on Pixels past. That includes Add Me, Face Unblur, Top Shot, Auto Best Take, and Night Sight. Thanks to the phone's folding form factor, you also get tabletop mode for hands-free shots, a new Dual Screen Preview that shows you the shot you just took on the screen while you're still framing the next shot, and hands-free astrophotography. The biggest addition is Camera Coach. This new tool quite literally walks you through the steps of framing and taking a photo. You start by taking a basic photo of something. It then analyzes the photo, creates a step-by-step guide on how to take a better version of that photo, and then assists you as you reframe the shot. The demo I saw was pretty compelling, and the feature may actually help teach a few folks how to take better photos. The Super Zoom tool is worth a quick discussion. Google is using lots of AI calculations to improve your 20x zoomed shots. It showed us an example of a close-up it took of the Empire State Building from 2.8 miles away from the One World Trade Center building. You could see the observation platform, including people, as well as the upper tower and antenna. It was all quite sharp. Google says it will automatically label photos that use AI calculations to generate the final result. When it comes to editing your photos, you have Pixel Studio, Auto Frame (centers your shots), Resize and Move, and, of course, Magic Eraser. One of the newer tools, Edit with Ask Photos, does things with voice prompts. For example, you can ask the phone to highlight and erase annoying objects in the background of your photos. As for video, the phone can capture footage in 1080p or 4K resolution at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second. The front cameras drop 24fps capture, but otherwise support the same recording specs. The biggest quality upgrade year over year is support for automatic, always-on 10-bit HDR video capture. This means that unless you turn this feature off, your videos will have deeper, richer color with more contrast (though the file sizes will be bigger). Video Boost is available, as well as Audio Magic Eraser (which lets you erase unwanted background noise), Macro Focus, Cinematic Pan, Slow-Motion (up to 240fps), Night Sight, and lots of stabilization modes. Software: Android 16 and Gemini As expected, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is among the first wave of phones to ship with Android 16 installed out of the box. More importantly, the Pixel 10 series will be the first to include the latest version of Google's Material Design, which we haven't seen outside of beta form yet. The phone will get seven years of OS and security updates. In terms of new AI features, Magic Cue is one of the more interesting. Magic Cue seems to be a more fully baked mash-up of Google's business-calling service and the old Google Now. Let's say you have a flight scheduled with United. If you call United, Magic Cue will surface a card with all your flight details, pulled from your email and calendar. This way, you can see the details without having to switch apps, change screens, or write them down in a separate note. Magic Cue doesn't stop there. If your friend texts you and asks what the address is of the restaurant where you have dinner reservations, Magic Cue will find the address in your conversation or calendar and surface it so you can see it without asking. The other is a new live, in-call language translation tool that takes things to the next level. Only a handful of languages are supported at first, and you have to choose the language before you make the call, but once you do, you can hold a full conversation with someone in another language. There's a delay, of course, as the app translates (and transcribes on screen) the conversation, but it still works relatively quickly. What's more, when the phone speaks the other language, it mimics your voice in a way that's eerily impressive. Of course, the Fold's large inner screen supports running multiple apps side by side, with up to three at a time. Google says it worked to improve the experience of dragging and dropping images, links, text, and videos from one app to another. Outlook: Hoping a Little Goes a Long Way The design may look mostly unchanged, but there's plenty new inside the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Is it enough to stand out from the Galaxy Z Fold 7? The Pixel doesn't go on sale until early October, so there is a good bit of time before I can officially test it and find out. I hope to get my hands on it again as soon as possible, so make sure to check back for a full review.

Pixel 10 Pro Fold hands-on: Forget thinness, Google is going hard on durability

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold was a revelation. Not only did Google switch to a simpler design while adding a larger main display, the company caught up to Samsung's long-running foldable line in just two generations. However, for its third go -- the Pixel 10 Pro Fold -- Google is opting for a different strategy than we've seen recently on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Instead of focusing on thinness, Google may have just created the most rugged foldable on the market. That's due in large part to the phone's new IP68 rating. Now I will admit that certification might not sound like a huge deal because non-flexy flagships have had this kind of durability for years. But this is the first time any foldable has put both top-tier dust and water resistance together in one device. And when you consider that these kinds of gadgets are generally a bit more fragile than their glass-brick counterparts, that means something. Furthermore, Google says the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's (P10PF from here on out) 8-inch Super Actua Flex display features a new titanium backplate that adds extra rigidity while a more robust layer of ultra-thin glass provides increased scratch resistance. On the outside, Google went with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 in front and back while installing a new gearless hinge the company claims is designed to handle more than 10 years of bending. Then to top things off, Google equipped the P10PF with a larger 5,015mAh battery, which is a significant jump up from the 4,650mAh cell in its predecessor. Even with all these improvements, the P10PF's overall dimensions are almost exactly the same as the previous model. Between its weight (9.1 ounces) and thickness (10.8mm folded) though, Google's foldable is still rather chunky compared Samsung's newly streamlined Z Fold 7 (8.9mm and 7.5 ounces). Following the major redesign we got last year on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, getting another all-new, super sleek chassis for the P10PF probably wasn't going to happen. But given the increased durability on this year's phone, I'm willing to give Google another 12 months to combine this newfound ruggedness with a thinner design. I just hope its engineers don't get complacent and push things out further than that. On the inside, the P10PF also boasts upgraded specs and performance with its Tensor G5 chip leading the way. According to Google, its CPU features 34 percent better performance while its TPU fares even better with a 60 percent jump over what we got from the Tensor G4. And just like the rest of the Pixel 10 family, the P10PF supports Google's Pixelsnap magnetic charging ecosystem, which is fully compatible with the Qi2 protocol. So not only is the Pixel 10 line the first batch of phones from a major Android OEM to support Qi2, the P10PF is also the first foldable phone with this industry standard. Wired charging speeds have increased slightly to 30 watts, but unfortunately wireless charging is staying pat at 15W. Base memory is also staying the same at 16GB of RAM, though there is a wider range of storage options from 256GB to 1TB. Some other small details I appreciate are the P10PF's slimmer bezels around the outside of its exterior display. It makes the curved corner in the top left look a lot less awkward and it allowed Google to increase its overall size a touch to 6.4 inches across (up from 6.3). On top of that, both of its displays are brighter too, topping out at 3,000 nits (up from 2,700 nits). Aside from updated software and AI tools like Magic Cue and the Daily Hub, all of which will be available across the Pixel 10 family, the P10PF is getting two notable foldable-specific upgrades. The first is enhanced drag and drop support that works in tandem with expanded split screen functionality to improve multitasking and moving files between apps. That said, as I was using demo devices that were essentially fresh out of the box, it was difficult to tell how much of an impact this may have on everyday use. The other addition is a new dual-pane layout for the P10PF's camera app, which takes better advantage of the extra screen space you have when the phone is unfolded. This allows you to see new photos as soon as you snap them on the left while the viewfinder stays open on the right. The biggest potential shortcoming of the P10PF is that its camera hardware is largely staying the same. Granted, that's not a huge deal because the previous model had the best photo quality of any foldable phone. But sadly, because the P10PF doesn't have the same sensors as the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL, this means the P10PF also won't have access to Google's AI-powered 100x Pro Res Zoom or the ability to capture portrait shots in full resolution. Unfortunately, when I asked if these features would be ported to the P10PF in the future, a Google rep told me there are currently no concrete plans to do so. In a lot of ways, it feels like Google is doing almost everything it can to improve the Pixel 10 Pro Fold without completely redesigning it with a thinner chassis. So if you're the type of person who can handle a little extra junk in the trunk, there's a lot to like about a foldable phone that comes with more robust durability. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold starts at $1,799 and is available for pre-order today in two colors: jade and moonstone. However, there will be a bit of delay until it actually arrives as official sales aren't slated to start until October 9.

This is the lowest price we've seen to date, even cheaper than last week's deal that knocked $600 off. It's kind of wild when you think about just how cheap this really is, coming in at the same price right now as the MSRP of the Pixel 9 Pro XL. So grab it while you can, because this discount won't be around for long. The foldable to buy if you're on a budget The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a solid device, featuring excellent hardware and software that can only get better going forward. Not only are you getting an impressive 8-inch foldable display, but the Google Tensor G4 chip also makes quick work with anything you can throw at it. The device also features 16GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage, and a 6.3-inch cover display that can be convenient to use if you don't feel like opening up the phone. There's also a triple camera setup, with a 48MP main, 10MP ultrawide, and 10MP telephoto. Camera quality is pretty good, and it will get you through most scenarios, but if you're looking for top-tier photography, you're probably best looking elsewhere since foldables aren't quite there yet. When it comes to the software, it's all Pixel, which means plenty of exclusive goodies and AI features. Google promises seven years of software updates, which will keep this device up to date for quite some time. So if you're looking to invest in a new foldable, or if this is going to be your first foldable phone ever, we think the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is going to be a fantastic option, especially at the new low price of $1,099.

Pixel 10 Pro Fold packs Qi2 and IP68 in a thicker design that's thinner where it counts [Hands-on]

Google has seemingly settled on a design with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, emulating that of last year's model. The details are where it matters, and even if this phone is thicker on a technicality, it cuts the fat in a lot of areas that make for a massive improvement, like battery and the new Tensor G5. Across the entire Pixel lineup, Google has made some welcome changes. None of the slab models have made drastic changes in design, and neither has the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. In fact, the pessimists among us would point out that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is technically thicker than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, in a world where OEMs are bending over backwards to develop thinner foldables. More on that later. It ain't broke, so don't fix it. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold looks fantastic, and the camera bump on the back still steal the show in accent details. That, alongside the new Moonstone and Jade colorways, Google is finally developing a foldable that says "we put serious effort into this." The sandblasted rails - complete with a physical SIM tray - and matte Gorilla Glass Victus 2 rear panel make for an excellent-looking device, and the dimensions feel a lot better in-hand. That's due to one particular size change, and it isn't the one you're thinking of. Yes, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is 0.3mm thicker than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. That means it didn't get thinner year-over-year, which is admittedly a bummer. However, the biggest change Google made is in the width. With a brand-new gearless hinge design that uses stronger materials and construction, Google was able to shave off almost the full side bezel, essentially balancing the device entirely. The even bezels on both sides do wonders to make the Pixel 10 Pro Fold feel like an entirely different device. Where the 0.3mm makes absolutely no discernible difference in depth, the 0.8mm shaved off the entire width feels like a massive change. On top of that, the new hinge allows Google to increase the water and dust resistance to IP68. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold failed in dust resistance with no rating, but that's now changed with a gearless build. Google says the Pixel 10 Pro Fold can withstand up to 10 years of folding, with around 50 folds per day, which puts it at around 180,000 cycles. That's less than Samsung's current promise for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, but it's pretty close. You shouldn't have to worry unless you're folding like a madlad. Internally, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold boasts Google's new Tensor G5 SoC paired with 16GB of RAM. That chip makes way for some of the company's newest AI model features, like Magic Cue. Think of Magic Cue like the next step in on-device learning that's often envisioned when someone mentions AI. The new tool predicts your needs using cues from device actions. Google gave the example of taking a call from an airline, where Magic Cue would present your flight details without any manual input. This is a feature we weren't able to test in full, but it's something that would separate the Pixel lineup from other Android and iOS devices, if it were to work on a consistently successful basis. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold also brings a change in multitasking, where a 90/10 split is now available, and dragging media and items from one app to another is smooth. That's allowed with up to three apps, now, which makes a big difference in using the Pixel's crown jewel display. We expect to see this improvement make its way to previous Fold models in Android 16, though it's nice to see in action. Google is using the same 8-inch Super Actua display on the inside, while the outer display gets an 11% increase to 3,000 nits max brightness. Both displays get a brightness boost, in fact, and the bezels are thinner overall. In person, these displays feel similar to what we're used to, because they're very close, if not identical. The back uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2 as the primary material. Underneath, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold hides a long-awaited surprise: magnets! Qi2 is finally here for the Pixel series, and that - fortunately - includes the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Google could have skipped this one, but that would have been a bad call, considering how big a deal this is for Android in general. The Qi2 standard means two things: better wireless charging and magnetic fastening for accessories and chargers. With a new standard industry-wide, Google ensures that chargers and accessories play nice with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and no case is essential for that capability. Google is launching a couple of Pixelsnap accessories that whet the palette, but in reality, most "MagSafe" accessories will work just fine. I used a Peak Design wallet on hand to make sure the alignment worked well, and it fits perfectly. The built-in magnets are plenty strong for wallets, batteries, stands, and more. In a quick test, the magnets used across the Pixel 10 phones were strong enough to hold up to aggressive jangling. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is heavier than the Pixel 10 Pro, but you get the point. Qi2 magnets are here, and they're a game changer for Pixel. That extends into battery life. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is estimated, by Google, to get 30 hours of use. With the way the Pixel 9 Pro Fold eats battery, we expect a little less, but we still expect over a day. Our hands-on experience didn't allow us to put the cell through its paces, but the 5,015mAh battery means plenty more life than the measly 4,650mAh cell in the 9 Pro Fold. The addition of Qi2 means upgraded wireless charging to 15W. It isn't as good as the gold standard of 25W, but it's a speed win, for sure. The only Pixel 10 device that gets 25W is the Pixel 10 Pro XL. The large Pro model also beats the Pixel 10 Pro Fold in camera specs, but that means very little considering the same thing occurred last year. Still, the 10 Pro Fold brings a slightly upgraded 48MP main sensor and identical ultrawide and 5x optical zoom lenses as last year. Google's processing allows for Super Res Zoom up to 20x with that telephoto lens. The camera UI is drastically different on the new foldable, too. A new Instant View feature lets you see previous photos taken in series when the device is unfolded. That allows you to compare shots as they're captured. One neat trick is seeing Super Res Zoom's processing as photos are taken. Processed shots at 20x zoom can be compared in the viewfinder, which shows off what the Tensor G5 is actually capable of. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold's camera array hasn't massively changed, but Google's UI has evolved around the phone's strengths, like the addition of Instant View and the fold's dual-screen modes. All things considered, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold comes down to a couple of things for $1,799. At no price increase from last year, the new foldable gets the Tensor G5 chip, a massive battery jump, and the addition of Qi2. For someone like me, that in itself is a reason for an upgrade. The phone itself feels better in the hand with that thinner profile, even if it's a little bit thicker because of the added magnets. If the Pixel 10 Pro Fold were to jump in price, I'd feel hesitant to suggest upgrading. Even at the expensive entry point for foldables, I think it's a worthy step up from the previous version. That's especially true if you plan on trading the Pixel 9 Pro Fold in. There's little reason to stick with the prior model.

If we're going to go on looks alone, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold looks like the previous model in new clothes. So what has Google actually changed? We'll dig into that, considering more has changed on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold than you might expect. Let's get this one out of the way. At 10.8mm thick when folded, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is slightly larger than the folded 10.5mm size of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. There's a big reason for the change, and it ends up not making a perceivable difference in the hand. That's especially true considering the other changes Google made to the design. Even with the slight increase in depth, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold now measures just 3 inches across. The change is a product of Google's new gearless steel hinge design that's stronger without some of the bulk that comes with more moving parts. The removed material allows the Pixel 10 Pro Fold to shave width near the external display, which solves one of the biggest flaws of foldables in past years. Without that thicker bezel to one side, the 10 Pro Fold feels a lot more balanced, and it's more easily mistaken for a normal slab-style device. Almost everything about the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's display is the same as last year, expect for the change in brightness. This year's model will get a 200-nit increase across the board, bringing the internal display up to 1,800 nits, while the cover display will be rated at 2,000 nits. The cover display size will also be slightly larger, coming in at 6.4 inches rather than 6.3. Other than that, both displays are essentially identical. Google has officially embraced the Qi2 standard in full and has equipped the Pixel 10 Pro Fold with internal magnets for both wireless charging and accessories. The company's new Pixelsnap series of accessories is launching alongside the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and it includes Qi2 cases, a ring stand, and a new charging stand that doubles as a puck. This might be the most exciting change, and one that might tip the balance in favor of upgrading. With magnets in the rear panel, existing MagSafe-branded accessories can be used as they would on an iPhone or with a magnetic case. The placement of Google's magnetic array seems to be perfect, with our existing wallets sticking just in the right spot. This opens the door for thousands of accessories that are already on the market, and more are sure to come. With that change to Qi2, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will be capable of 15W wireless charging. While it isn't the max 25W that Qi2 can bring, it's better than the 7.5W of last year. Wired charging brings an increase, too, to 30W. Google says the Pixel 10 Pro Fold can charge to 50% in 30 minutes, with speeds slowing down a bit after that. The total capacity has massively changed, as well. The new battery array is rated for 5,015mAh. That's almost 500mAh more than the previous model, which will likely make for some serious gains in daily battery life. Google rated the device at upwards of 30 hours on a charge. It's uncertain, though, especially with a new SoC. Speaking of... The Pixel 10 Pro Fold packs Google's new Tensor G5 chipset. With that, the company is leveraging more AI power for image processing and OS efficiency. TSMC, rather than Samsung, produces the new processor, but the modem inside will switch from a MediaTek model to a Samsung unit. The jump has been made in water and dust resistance to IP68 for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. This means it's water-resistant, but not entirely waterproof. Still, users won't need to worry if it falls in a puddle or on a dusty trail. It's as water and dust-tight as most slab phones, but that can still change over time with use and repair. The "G" logo is bigger. As far as software goes, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will run Android 16. With that, Google is loading it with a few UI tweaks and apps. The camera UI is a little bit cleaner and offers a more appealing layout. Buttons are squared off and seem to be a little easier to read. With that, a new Instant View allows users to see images that were just taken, as opposed to hitting the gallery button and sifting through photos. It's something like a comparison view. Google is also bringing new apps into the fray, like Journal for writing with a little bit of AI sprinkled in. It doesn't seem to be something full-fledged like NotebookLM, but it's a nice inclusion. "Daily Hub" and "Magic Cue" are also making their way to the Pixel 10 lineup, which will be new AI tools that emulate what Samsung sort of offers in its AI brief feature. Just kidding, there are only two colors available. At least they both look good! The Pixel 10 Pro Fold comes in "Moonstone" and "Jade." The former is a nice greyscale variant that matches everything, and the Jade colorway looks like a desaturated Limencello. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is available to pre-order starting today, though shipping will begin sometime in October.

The Made by Google event happening today (August 20) gives us a new generation of Pixel phones, including a highly anticipated Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The latest generation of Google's foldable phone not only introduces improvements over last year's model, it's bucking to be the most durable foldable phone that Google has ever made. There was a lot to love about the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, so much so that it found a place among the best foldable phones we've tested. At a glance, the differences between this new model and its predecessor may not seem substantial, but Google worked to improve durability while also getting the most use out of the hardware on offer. The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is available to preorder right now, with the release date set for October 9. We've got a Pixel 10 Pro Fold hands-on with first impressions about the phone, but here's a rundown of the new features so you know what to expect from Google's latest foldable phone. The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold looks to be one of the most durable foldable phones we've ever seen. This is due to the aerospace-grade aluminium used in the phone's construction, alongside a gearless hinge. This allows the phone to survive a drop while also avoiding damage from dust in the folding mechanism. On that note, the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold also features an IP68 water and dust resistance, which Google claims is a first for foldable phones. Certainly, it tops the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and that phone's IP48 rating, which means the Samsung phone can survive a dunk in water, but can't keep out finer dust particles. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold doesn't just have a more durable body, as Google has also made the Super Actua Flex Display more durable. This includes building it with ultra-thin glass and two layers of anti-impact film to help improve drop protection. Google states that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold can handle up to ten years of folding. While that isn't the same set number that Samsung went with for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, it's arguably a better choice as a description. Google has also improved the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's display. The inner screen measures 8 inches as before, while the 6.4-inch outer display is slightly larger thanks to smaller bezels. Google says both displays are capable of reaching 3,000 nits at peak brightness, meaning you'll always have some quality visuals visible to you. The screens are more than just brighter, as Google is also working with app developers to get the most out of the larger display. For instance, Google is introducing a new game controller functionality to the outer display, meaning you can have a more immersive experience when it comes to playing games like Disney Speedstorm. Not only that, Google has stated that it is working with streaming apps like Disney Plus and Netflix to help offer immersive streaming on the go. On top of new experiences, Google offers a split-screen feature that allows you to easily use two apps at once, while also allowing you to adjust each one to your preference. Not only that, you should be able to easily drag and drop media and files to different apps, without needing to constantly open and close programs One of the biggest additions to the Google Pixel 10 is the 5,015 mAh battery, making it the first foldable phone to feature such a large battery. Google claims that this will allow the phone to manage 30-plus hours, and the 30W wired charging will help you get back to full power in no time. Not only that, the phone also features 15W Qi2 wireless charging that is built right into the phone to help connect with the new Pixel Snap accessories. That's another contrast to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which lacks the built-in magnets found on Google's phone. On top of the new battery, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is also coming with the same Tensor G5 chip that features in all the Pixel 10 range. With that comes exceptional performance, advanced camera intelligence and leading-edge AI. Not only that, the Tensor G5 is also more secure thanks to new security hardware that helps to keep your phone safer from the moment you have it. Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold Hands-on Review: The Smartest (and Toughest) Foldable Yet

Find out more about how we test, analyze, and rate. I've held the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and Google's new foldable phone has some key advantages over the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. These include a more durable design that's actually dust resistant, new AI tools that anticipate your needs, a bigger battery and a more powerful zoom camera. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is also $200 cheaper than the Z Fold, but it falls behind Samsung in one major way. Could this be the best foldable phone yet? Here's my first impressions of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold so far. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is available for pre-order now but the release date is not until October 9. The starting price is $1,799/£1,749/AU$2,699 for 256GB of storage and 16GB of RAM. That's $200/£50 less than the Galaxy Z Fold 7. If the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the sleek sport car of foldables, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the beefy SUV. It's bigger but also tougher. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold sports a new gearless, high-strength hinge that Google says is good for 10 years of folding. And, unlike the Z Fold 7, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is IP68 rated, which means it's both water and dust resistant. Samsung's phone can only repel water and can't promise protection against finer dust particles. In other words, you can bring the Pixel 10 Pro Fold to the beach and presumably not have to worry. The bad news is that Google's foldable is nowhere near as sleek or portable as Samsung's. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold measures 10.8mm thick when folded, compared to just 8.9mm for the Galaxy Z Fold 7. And when unfolded Samsung wins, too -- it's 4.2mm compared to 5.2mm for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. At 9.1 ounces, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold weighs the same as Google's last model, which is not great considering the Z Fold 7 is a much lighter 7.5 ounces At least the colors look nice. You can take your pick from Moonstone and Jade, and I much prefer the Moonstone model which is slate blue. The outer display on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is now slightly bigger at 6.4 inches, up from 6.3 inches on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. And you still get a massive 8-inch main display when you unfold the phone. Samsung gives you an even bigger 6.5-inch cover screen with the same size panel on the inside. Both Pixel Fold screens are brighter now, too, as they're both rated for 3,000 nits of peak brightness -- versus 2,600 nits for the Z Fold 7. The "Tron: Ares" trailer looked very immersive on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's big screen, although the crease is still visible where the phone unfolds. And I'm not a fan of the black bars above and below the action, though that's true for other foldables as well. Multitasking is super simple with the Split Screen feature on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, letting you run two apps at once side by side. And you can easily resize the windows. But the Z Fold 7 can run three apps simultaneously. You still get a desktop mode for using the Pixel 10 Pro Fold like a laptop, with the content up top and controls down below. It's a bit of a bummer that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold sticks with the exact same camera hardware as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, especially since Samsung now offers a 200MP main shooter on its premium foldable. You get the same 48MP wide camera on the Pixel, along with 10.5MP ultrawide and 10.8 MP telephoto lenses. That said, the 5x optical zoom on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's telephoto camera beats the 3x zoom on the Z Fold 7. I really like Google's new Instant View feature, which makes it easy to see the photos you've just taken on the left side of the screen. So you can see on the spot if you got the right shot. As with the previous Pixel Fold, there's a rear camera selfie mode so you can use the main camera to take selfies. And there's a new Made You Look animation to get your kids to smile. There's a 10MP camera for the cover display and a 10MP camera (with punch hole) on the main display. Stay tuned for our testing to see how the Pixel 10 Pro Fold stacks up against the best camera phones. If there's one area the Pixel 10 Pro beats Samsung it's AI. And it starts with a very handy Magic Cue feature that's available across all the Pixel 10 phones. Say you're calling a restaurant or airline to change your dinner time or flight. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is smart enough to pull up your reservation information right on the call screen. Or if you're in the Messages app, you'll see a button to show your calendar if you get asked whether you're free tomorrow and you can pull it up without leaving the app. Magic Cue is super smart. I'm really impressed by the Ask Photos feature, which lets you make edits to pictures just by telling your phone what you want to see changed. So you could type or talk into the Pixel 10 Pro Fold that you want to remove the reflections from an image. Or you could remove a person from a photo just by typing it in. The AI then does the work for you. If you want to get the best shot right out of the gate, there's Camera Coach, which you can access right from within the camera app. It analyzes the frame and gives you tips for getting the best possible image. And if you're taking a group shot, Auto Best Take will automatically pick the best-looking faces and apply them to your image while still making it look natural. It's freakishly good. Similar to Samsung's Now Brief, Google offers a Daily Hub that summarizes your day for you, including your appointments, reminders, weather and more. If you want to freak people out, try the improved Live Translate feature. The Pixel 10 Pro will let you speak another language sampling your own voice. Pixel phones have been sluggish compared to the competition up until now, but that should change with the new Tensor G5 chip in the Pixel 10 series, which gets paired with 16GB of RAM. This 3nm chip from TSMC has a 34% faster CPU and 60% faster TPU for AI tasks. The initial leaked Pixel 10 Pro benchmarks don't paint the best picture, but we'll see how this phone performs in our own testing. In fact, Google says the Tensor G5 offers the most advanced on-device AI capabilities yet -- including Veo 3 video generation. But we'll have to see how it measures up to the Z Fold 7's Snapdragon 8 Elite chip in our testing. One area where Google pulls ahead is the size of the battery. You get a 5,015 mAh battery on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, compared to 4,400 for the Z Fold 7. So at least on paper, Google's foldable should last longer on a charge. For context, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 lasted 10 hours and 55 minutes on our battery test, which is just around average for a phone. In terms of charging, Google offers 15W Qi2 charging with new PixelSnap accessories. Samsung's phone supports Qi2 only if you use a case because there's no built-in magnets like the ones featured on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. If you go the wired charging route, you can get a 50% charge in 30 minutes with a 30-watt charger, Google says. Overall, I'm impressed with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's improved durability and helpful AI features -- especially Magic Cue and Ask Photos. I also like that you get a more powerful zoom and bigger battery than Samsung's foldable, as well as dust resistance for the first time in a foldable. It's also hard to ignore the $200 price gap between this phone and the Z Fold 7. But if I'm already spending more than $1,500 for a foldable, I think I'd rather carry the much thinner and lighter one than the smarter one. I've now held the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 7 -- and there's a clear winner

My Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold hands-on video on YouTube has sparked quite a debate. There's over 160 comments and counting, and many of them are in favor of the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold -- but there's also a lot of people who prefer Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7. So how are these foldable phones different and which one would I buy with my own money? To be fair, I've only done a Pixel 10 Pro Fold hands-on so far, and it's not going on sale until October. But I have formed some opinions after a couple hours. And for me, there's a clear winner so far. The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold does have some key advantages over the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Here's where Google's foldable stands out. IP68 rating Thanks in part to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's gearless hinge, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the first foldable in the U.S. to earn an IP68 rating. That means it's both dust- and water resistant. In other words, you could take the Pixel 10 Pro Fold to the beach and not freak out. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is only IP54 rated, so it can shrug off some water but is absolutely not dust resistant. So if you want the more durable foldable, Google is likely it. Longer zoom While the camera hardware hasn't really changed from the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold has the edge over the Z Fold 7 in zooming power. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has a 10.8MP 5x telephoto lens, compared to a 10MP 3x for the Samsung. So you should get better results when zooming in. Technically, the Z Fold 7 has the longer digital zoom at 30x vs 20x for Google, but we'll see how the cameras compare when we face them off. Better AI features The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is no slouch in the AI department. The Gemini Live integration is great, and I like that you can see the before and after for AI generated images side by side with the original photo on the left and right side of the screen. The Audio Eraser function for videos is very powerful, too. But the Pixel 10 Pro Fold takes things to the next level. The new Magic Cue feature is fantastic, as it surfaces information when you need it without having to jump between multiple apps. And I love Ask Photos. You can simply speak to your phone or type in the changes you want to see and the AI will kick in to make your photo edits. The Camera Coach feature is pretty nifty, too, in that it can analyze the frame in real time and give you shooting tips. Even the Live Translate feature is next-level; it can spit out translations in your own voice. Creepy but cool. Bigger battery and Qi 2 charging Now, a larger battery doesn't always equate to superior endurance, but it certainly helps. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has a 5,015 mAh battery, which is significantly more capacity than the Galaxy Z Fold 7's 4,400 mAh battery. Also, unlike the Z Fold 7, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold supports magnetic Qi2 charging out of the box with Pixelsnap. For the Z Fold 7 you need to get a case to unlock this capability. It's $200 cheaper To be fair, both the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Z Fold 7 are super expensive. But Google's foldable is more affordable with a starting price $1,799 / £1,749 / $2,699. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 starts at $1,999 / £1,799 / AU$2,899 Galaxy Z Fold 7, so you're saving $200 if you go with the Pixel. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 doesn't have as many "wins" over the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, but the design alone will cause many to opt for Samsung. Much thinner and lighter design Now that I've held both the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, I can say with confidence that Samsung's foldable feels like it's from the future and the Pixel is stuck in the past. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold measures 10.8mm thick when folded and 5.2mm when unfolded, and it weighs in at 9.1 ounces. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures 8.9mm thick when folded, 4.2mm unfolded and it's just 7.5 ounces. For those scoring at home, that's lighter than the iPhone 16 Pro Max (7.99 ounces). I can't emphasize this enough. Using the Galaxy Z Fold 7 feels like using a regular phone with its 6.5-inch external display. And then you can unfurl it to enjoy an 8-inch panel. There's no penalty for carrying around a foldable and I could easily see myself slipping one in my front pocket. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is just as heavy as the previous model. Some are complaining that the Z Fold 7 wobbles on a table due to its camera design, and it is annoying, but it's hardly a dealbreaker for me. More powerful main camera Samsung stepped up its camera game by giving the main wide camera a boost to 200MP on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. And it took gorgeous looking pictures in my full Galaxy Z Fold 7 review. Having that sort of resolution also gives you a lot more freedom to crop in after the fact. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has a 48MP main shooter. Less visible crease Based on my hands-on time with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, its crease is more noticeable than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which Samsung worked hard to minimize on its new foldable. Whether you're watching a movie or just trying to digest a large spreadsheet, it's nice to have less of a distraction on the main panel. Better multitasking There's nothing wrong with the Split View functionality on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. It's easy to run two apps side by side and drag and drop content between windows. But the Galaxy Z Fold 7 ups that to three apps at once, giving you even more versatility. If you're going to potentially leave your tablet or even laptop behind, it's nice to be able to do more on the go. Plus, there's also Samsung DeX that takes productivity to an even higher level that makes it a lot like a Windows 11 computer. Like I said, I'm going to reserve final judgement for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold until we get our hands on a review unit, which I presume will happen closer to the October 9th release date. But if I were making a call right now, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 would get my vote. Samsung's foldable is so thin and light it makes you feel like you're cheating the system. After several generations, Samsung has nailed the foldable design. You really need to hold it. I also like the fact that the crease is less visible. On the other hand, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is $200 cheaper and yet gives you a bigger battery, better AI features and IP68 durability. So your choice will come down to personal preference. But I know which way I'm leaning.

Google's newest foldable phone is finally here: See the Pixel 10 Pro Fold up close

At its Made by Google event on Wednesday, Google will officially reveal the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The follow-up to last year's excellent Pixel 9 Pro Fold isn't a huge, revolutionary jump, but the incremental changes Google did make are pretty important for fans of foldable phones. The device starts at $1,799 and arrives on Oct. 9, a bit later than the other new Pixel 10 phones. It also comes in just two colors, Moonstone and Jade. We recently got the chance to get an up-close look at the new Google foldable, and we've got all the details. Here are the relevant specs for Pixel 10 Pro Fold: There are a few differences from last year's model that are worth noting. The external display is a tenth of an inch bigger, but more importantly, it has a smaller bezel this time. Brightness peaked at 2,700 nits last year, so the Pixel 10 Pro Fold should be better equipped to deal with sunlight. You'll also get a newer Tensor G5 chip for improved performance, as well as a significantly larger battery that should be more durable than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's battery was. And here are the camera specs: You'll also get a trio of rear camera lenses, as usual, but they don't appear to be horribly different (if at all) from the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's camera array, at least according to the spec sheet. It seems like the Pixel 10 Pro will be the one to get if you're really into photography, at any rate. Aside from the battery and display upgrades, Google has a few other things to look forward to. For starters, Google says it upgraded the hinge this year, and it promising 10 years of folding out of this phone. Beyond that, it has an IP68 water and dust protection rating, which is very good for a foldable. Qi2 wireless charging is new here and will appeal to plenty of folks. Pixel 10 Pro Fold also has access to the same new AI features as the other Pixel 10 phones, including Daily Hub, a new one-stop-shop for your daily schedule, the weather, and any news you might want to read before you head out for the day. Also on the software side is Instant View, which lets you preview photos you've taken before taking them while the phone is unfolded. It's worth reiterating that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will launch later than the other Pixel 10 devices, on Oct. 9. That said, you can pre-order it soon via the Google Store.

Hands on: Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold isn't a reinvention, but two major upgrades make it a foldable worth considering

Google probably won't get any credit for major leaps in foldable innovation, but the new Pixel 10 Pro Fold does represent a couple of notable firsts in the folding phone space: IP68 protection and Qi Pixel Snap charging, which happens to work almost exactly like Apple's MagSafe charging and accessory technology. These are not features that you'd notice at a glance, as Google's latest folding Android phone looks almost exactly like the Pixel Pro 9 Fold. The dimensions are the same; it's still just 5.2mm thick when unfolded, which, a year ago, was an eye-opening spec, but now, in the face of the 4.2mm-thick Galaxy Z Fold 7, is just looks nice and slim. The materials, which include multi-alloy steel, aerospace-grade aluminum, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, are unchanged. This is unquestionably not the same Pixel Fold as last year, though. Google has reengineered the hinge so that it's now gearless and, apparently, fully sealed, protecting it not just from water incursion but dust. This might be the first foldable that's safe to take to the beach without of a case. The hinge is also incredibly smooth in use; if anything, the magnet holding it closed feels slightly less intense than those on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. And while the 8-inch Super Actua Flex screen is still eight inches (and almost crease-free), it's the cover screen that's gotten the more noticeable upgrade. The bezels are now slightly thinner, which makes the Super Actua display larger, at 6.4 inches (up from 6.3). Interestingly, the Galaxy Z Fold 7's cover screen is, at 6.5, larger (it's actually slightly taller), but side by side the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's cover display is wider, with more pixels (2364 x 1080 vs 2520 x 1080 for the Fold 7), which means the virtual keyboard on the Pixel is more usable. Design-wise, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold maintains the aesthetic appeal of its predecessor, with the folded device being almost indistinguishable from a standard flagship phone, except that one side features curved corners and the hinge side is more squared off. It still feels good in the hand and not heavy, although at 258 grams it's not a lightweight when compared directly to the 215g Galaxy Z Fold 7. Initially, the camera array on the back appeared unchanged to my eye, but then I noticed some subtle differences. The lens openings are slightly larger and are surrounded by a thin, polished chamfer, which gives the array a slightly more upscale look. Google has also upgraded its logo on the back. It's larger, and has a reflective finish. Unfolded, there's virtually no difference between the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Last year, I marveled at how the Pixel Fold 9 could unfold completely flat; this year, I simply expect it. Because of the large camera array, though, it still doesn't lie flat on a table, a 'feature' it shares with the Galaxy Z Fold 7. There's still a large-ish punch hole in the 8-inch main display for the 10MP camera, and the bezels are about the same thickness as before. The screen, though, features new materials to help it better withstand impact, although, perhaps fortunately, I wasn't able to test their effectiveness, as I managed not to drop the phone during my brief hands-on time. Both displays are brighter than ever, thanks to their 3000 maximum nits level, which should make the Pixel 10 Pro Fold excellent for outdoor, direct-sunlight use - I'll let you know when I get the chance to take a review unit outside. The large 8-inch super Actua flex display is not only bright, it's sharp, clear, and with smooth motion (1Hz-120Hz adaptive). The crease is barely noticeable. It does have a camera punch hole, but I don't imagine that will be very distracting for most activities. It's a great viewfinder for the camera and also a lovely way to look at the pictures you just took. The triple camera array specs are virtually unchanged from last year. They are: There's also a 10MP selfie camera in the cover screen and another 10MP selfie camera in the main display, which is a slight improvement from the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's 8MP main-screen selfie camera. While the Galaxy Z Fold 7 appears to have the Pixel 10 Pro Fold beat in most aspects, the latter phone has the upper hand when it comes to optical zoom. The Z Fold 7, much to my dismay, tops out at 3x optical, while the Pixel 10 Pro Fold delivers 5x with, at 10.8MP, a slightly higher pixel count. I took some photos with all these cameras and they looked good. Macro capabilities through the ultra-wide are impressive, as were the few shots I managed to grab with the 5x telephoto camera. It's way too soon, however, to tell if they meet or exceed last year's cameras or those of any other folding phone. What I did enjoy was the ability to preview photos on the flex screen (Google calls this 'instant View') as you're taking them. The 8-inch display can automatically split up into quadrants, with the viewfinder display at the top-right, the camera controls below that, and the last two photos you took appearing on the left side of the screen. As a new photo comes in, the oldest one is pushed off the screen. Inside the phone is Google's new Tensor G5 chip, which is more AI-capable than ever. This chip runs the Gemini Nano Model on the phone, meaning the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is capable of supporting multiple generative AI capabilities across speech, information, and imagery. Similar to what I experienced on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, I can now run Gemini Live in full-screen mode on the 8-inch display. I turned on the camera and asked Gemini to identify what it saw on the table, which it did with impressive skill. There are other features, like Camera Coach and Edit Photos with Ask Photos, that were not yet enabled on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold phones I tried out, but which I did see in action on a Pixel 10 Pro, and I was impressed with how the coach guides you step by step towards, for instance, a better portrait. It advised me, for example, to switch to portrait mode, how to frame my subject, and even how to use the rule of thirds, and the result was better photos. Another Gemini feature that works locally, thanks to the Tensor G5 chip, is Live Translate. While it wasn't yet working on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, I did try it on a Pixel 10 Pro XL, and it is, to be honest, astonishing. I held one phone and spoke in English to a Google rep who was holding a phone on the other side of the room. She was playing the role of a Spanish-only speaker. I talked for a bit in English, but could overhear on her end 'my voice' speaking the same phrases in Spanish. It was wild, and the closest thing I've seen in mobile technology to the Star Trek Universal Translator. There might be some concerns about what Google is doing with that voice clone, but Google told us it's all on device, and not persistent. So there's no accessible record of my Spanish-speaking voice. At 5,015mAh, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's battery is significantly larger than last year, and could offer up to 30 hours of video playback (a claim I couldn't test during my brief hands-on session), but that's not the only power-related upgrade. This is a Qi2-compatible device (as are all the Pixel 10 phones), which means it will support 15W wireless charging speeds. More exciting, though, is the inclusion of Pixelsnap, a MagSafe-like feature that integrates a ring of magnets, which means the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will work with a variety of first-and third-party Pixelsnap grips, charging devices, and bases. Google has some gorgeous ones, including a ring stand that folds so flat and thin but is strong enough to hold the Pixel 10 Pro fold even when I held only the ring and dangled the phone in the air. Pixelsnap also works with Google's new Pixelsnap charging stand, letting you attach the phone in landscape or portrait mode. I was also able to unfold the phone and still attach it to the stand, which is heavy enough that it didn't wobble or tip over. Naturally, we had to try third-party MagSafe accessories, all of which worked perfectly on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, even ones from Apple. This is, naturally, a 5G (Dual Sim, Nano SIM, and eSIM) Android 16 phone that will arrive with support for WiFi 7 and, notably, Bluetooth v6. The Tensor G5 CPU is backed by a formidable 16GB of RAM and a base of 256GB of storage. That's unchanged from last year, as is the price, which still sits at $1,799 (UK: £1,749.00 / AUS: $2,699). The phone is not only designed to last, but will be supported by seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop feature updates. Preorders for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, available in Jade and Moonstone, kick off on August 20, but you'll have to wait a bit for the phone to arrive. It's currently set to ship on October 9.

Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold hands on: key improvements and one flaw

A year before the expected launch of the iPhone Fold, the world of folding phones has become fiercely competitive. Oppo first dropped the world's thinnest folding phone -- the Oppo Find N5 -- earlier this year, but then limited its release to just China and Singapore. A few months later, Honor launched the new Magic V5 at the beginning of July, which stole the Find N5's title, and just a week later, Samsung launched the most impressive folding phone this year, the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Unlike its competitors, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a key advantage: it's available in all major markets, including the US. Recommended Videos Against this backdrop, Google just announced the successor to last year's Pixel 9 Pro Fold at an event earlier today in New York. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold builds upon last year's excellent folding phone, but it also bucks the trend amongst its peers; rather than going thinner, Google made it thicker. I spent half an hour with Google's new folding phone earlier today, and it's an iterative upgrade with a few key improvements, but one major drawback. Here's our first look at Google's new folding phone. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has flagship hardware The Pixel 9 Pro Fold was a welcome improvement over the first-generation Pixel Fold, and saw Google improve every facet of the design in a major overhaul that would have been better placed in this tenth-anniversary version of the Pixel series. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the first folding phone with full IP68 dust and water resistance, which ensures it boasts the same durability as many of the best phones. The hinge has also been improved, and it's twice as durable as the last generation, with Google also claiming that it can handle over ten years of folding. The front features a 6.4-inch Actua display, which is 0.1 inches larger than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, with a dynamic refresh rate between 60Hz and 120 Hz, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, and up to 3000 nits peak brightness. The main display is the same 8-inch display used in the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, although it's slightly brighter at the same 3,000 nits, and it also supports a max refresh rate of 120Hz alongside Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. The rear also features the same triple camera setup from last year's model, with a 48MP wide camera with f/1.7 aperture, a 10.5MP ultrawide camera with f/2.2 aperture, and a 10.8MP telephoto camera with f/3.1 aperture that offers up to 5x optical zoom. The latter two lenses are on par with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 -- albeit with better zoom performance -- but Samsung's latest folding phone brings the 200MP camera found in the Galaxy S25 Ultra, and it could outperform Google's folding phone in this key area. It will also likely have strong battery life and charging Then there's the battery and charging; like the rest of the Pixel 10 series, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold features Google's PixelSnap charging solution, which is otherwise known as Qi2 charging, and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the first folding phone to have this feature built in. This means it supports magnetic wireless charging at up to 15W charging speeds, but unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 7, it doesn't require a case to enable Qi2 charging. As well as a big improvement in wireless charging, Google has also increased the battery size of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold to a 5,015 mAh battery, almost eight percent larger than the 4,650 mAh battery in the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This is paired with faster 30W charging, which Google claims can charge the Pixel 10 Pro Fold to 50% in just 30 minutes. Charging speeds were a notable criticism of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold last year, and the improvements in both wired and wireless speeds this year make this a strong contender if you're looking for the best folding phone for battery life in the US. A new era for the Tensor processor Much like several other of its features, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold also features the new Tensor G5 processor that powers the rest of the Pixel 10 series. This marks a watershed moment for Google's nascent processor efforts, as the company has switched foundries from Samsung to TSMC, the same chipmaker that builds the chipsets used in many of the world's best phones. This is the most significant upgrade to the Tensor processor lineup since its launch five years ago, featuring deeper customization and being custom-designed for the latest advancements in Google Gemini. The Tensor G5 is built on the same 3nm processor used in most chipsets, and according to Google, the CPU is on average 34% faster than the Tensor G4 used last year. The Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) -- a specialized ASIC designed by Google to accelerate machine learning records -- has also been vastly improved and is now 60% more powerful than the TPU in the Tensor G4. Alongside these notable improvements, the Tensor G5 also brings a host of improvements, including much faster on-device AI performance and an upgraded ISP for better photography. The Tensor G5 is paired with 16GB of RAM and should yield vastly improved performance for a true flagship experience. Several new Gemini, AI, and software features As you might expect from Google, there's a host of new Gemini, AI, and software features designed to take advantage of the unique form factor of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. All of Google's new Pixel 10 lineup features a new set of helpful, proactive suggestions throughout the UI, which are designed to help surface information before you know that you need it. The highlight of these new features is MagicCue, which leverages the Tensor G5 processor and Google's Gemini Nano model for real-time processing of information to enable contextual suggestions. These can include things like adding events, previewing weather forecasts for upcoming trips, and settling a bill, but Google says this will become much more useful the more you use the phone. There's also a new Daily Hub, a personalized digest with upcoming calendar events and other pertinent information, as well as new AI-powered real-time translation of voice calls, with the person on the other end able to hear the translation in their language but in your voice. There are also improvements to call screening as well as the wider suite of Gemini-powered features that have become synonymous with Google's smartphone lineup. There's just one big flaw with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold In a vacuum, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold would be fairly impressive, but other smartphones exist. While the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is mighty impressive, it also has one major drawback: the thickness, as mentioned earlier. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold measures 5.1mm thick when unfolded and 10.5mm thick when folded, which made it slimmer than the Galaxy Z Fold 6 last year. However, while Samsung has made the Galaxy Z Fold 7 much thinner this year -- it measures 4.2 mm and 8.9 mm, respectively -- Google chose not to follow suit, and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold measures 5.2mm thick when unfolded, and 10.8mm when folded. Alongside this, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is also heavier than the competition. Weighing 258 grams, it is one gram heavier than last year, but 43 grams heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, or almost 17 percent. This additional weight is immediately noticeable, and the size remains the biggest flaw I noticed with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold in my brief time with it. It still feels incredibly premium in the hand, but it's noticeably bulkier than the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Is it a deal-breaker? We'll find out in our full review, but for now, it's one big flaw that detracts from an otherwise excellent folding phone. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is available to pre-order today (August 20) for the same $1,799 price as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, but it won't be released until October 9. It comes in two colors -- Moonstone and Jade -- and while the price is high, the best Pixel 10 deals can help take the sting out of the price tag.

It features a new gearless hinge that's twice as durable as Pixel 9 Pro Fold's, and it even has an IP68 water and dust resistance rating -- a first for a foldable device. This means your phone will have the same protection as the other Pixel 10 phones. We also reengineered the Super Actua Flex Display to be more durable. The screen is built with ultra-thin glass and two layers of anti-impact film for added drop protection. These upgrades combined with the new hinge ensures that Pixel 10 Pro Fold can handle over 10 years of folding.

The New Pixel 10 Pro Fold Is a Bit Thick, but Boasts Increased Durability

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is about as thick as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It now has an IP68 dust and water resistance rating. Most specs have been improved, and pricing remains the same. With the recent release of Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7, the standard for folding phones is thinner than ever before. That's why it's a bit odd that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold looks so similar to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. But while this year's model looks like a fairly incremental upgrade on the surface, dig a little deeper, and you'll notice that most of the phone's specs have been overhauled. I'll start off with what hasn't been changed, since there's not that much to go through. Maybe the most disappointing thing about the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is that it's got the same size and weight as its predecessor. That means it's 6.1 inches tall and 3.0 inches wide, as well as 0.4 inches thick when closed and 0.2 inches thick when unfolded. While not excessively hefty, especially with the weight only coming up to 0.57 pounds, it's still much bulkier than Samsung's option, which set a new standard when it released late last month. If you want the absolute thinnest folding phone around, this won't be it. Internally, the memory is also the same as on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, at 16GB of RAM. Additionally, while Google told me that the 48MP main camera on the rear of the phone is "new," the specs sheet seems to match the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's camera setup, with a 48MP main camera, a 10.5MP ultrawide camera, and a 10.8MP telephoto camera. I've reached out to Google for additional details about that discrepancy and will update this post once I hear back. And that's about it as far as specs that haven't been improved in some way. Inside and out, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is almost entirely new. Here's what's worth paying attention to. Like the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is upgrading to Google's first fully custom chip, the Tensor G5. Google's in-house chips specialize in power efficiency and AI, but have historically lacked in power elsewhere. With the G5, Google has an opportunity to correct that oversight, and while I haven't been able to test drive it yet, the company says the new chip is 60% more efficient on AI and has a 34% faster CPU overall. That kind of power bump could make downloading heavyweight apps like games a lot more worthwhile, which is why it's good that there's now a 1TB storage option as well, in addition to the previously available 256GB and 512GB options. Maybe the biggest upgrades this time around are to the foldable's all-important screens. While the phone's main, internal screen seems the same on the surface, there are improvements both inside and out. Starting off with pure numbers, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's cover screen, which you'll use while the phone is folded, is now a little bigger at 6.4 inches as opposed to 6.3 inches on the last model. The aspect ratio is still 20:9, meaning it won't quite match the wider, 21:9 field of view on non-folding phones, but thinner bezels are always appreciated. It's also brighter now, at up to 3,000 nits peak brightness compared to 2,700 nits on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, although the refresh rate still caps out at 120Hz. The internal screen, or the main screen that you'll use when unfolding the phone, is mostly the same, still coming in at 8 inches with the same 120Hz refresh rate. Looking just at the numbers, the only noticeable difference is that the peak brightness is also now 3,000 nits, as opposed to 2,700 nits on last year's model. Numbers don't tell the whole story, though. Foldable screens can be notoriously finicky, and Google says it's re-engineered the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's internal screen to be more durable, with "ultra-thin glass and two-layers of anti-impact film." That doesn't mean a lot to me, but what does is that Google's promising the phone will be able to hold up to over 10 years of folding, which is a massive improvement over the issues the first Pixel Fold famously had. Google's even managed to get an IP68 dust and water resistance rating for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, something Samsung couldn't do with the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Dust can wreak havoc on folding phone screens if they get stuck in between them when they're closed, so some promised resistance to it should go a long way towards peace of mind. As on the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro, Google's promising increased battery life on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, up from a promised 24-ish hours to around 30ish hours. Those kind of promises depend on how you use your phone, so stay tuned for a more concrete test once I've gotten some more time with the device. What I can say for now is that the battery capacity itself is at least bigger, at a typical 5,015 mAh vs. 4,650 mAh on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Fast charging is also promised to be able to hit up to 50% in about 30 minutes over a 30W wireless charger, whereas the Pixel 9 Pro Fold needed a 45W charger. Maybe my favorite addition to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is Google's version of MagSafe, called Pixelsnap. Also being introduced on the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro, Pixelsnap uses Qi2 charging and allows compatible chargers to magnetically snap right onto your device, to wireless charge at speeds of up to 25W, no adhesive magnetic rings required.
