Vadodara: P K Mishra, principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday addressed the foundation day of the Agro-Economic Research Centre (AERC) at Sardar Patel University (SPU), Vallabh Vidyanagar, Mishra highlighted the significant transformation of Gujarat's agricultural sector over the past 25 years, transitioning from a subsistence-based economy to a diversified and market-oriented one.He emphasised that Gujarat's agricultural success serves as a model for other Indian states. Underscoring the importance of sustainable practices for long-term productivity and environmental health, he advocated for strategies such as soil testing, conservation tillage and adoption of technologies such as remote sensing, GPS, drones and AI to optimize operations. Gujarat's agriculture and allied sector has grown at 9.7% CAGR compared to 5.7% India's average, primarily driven by allied sectors, he said. Mishra emphasised Gujarat's potential for fisheries development, given its 1,600km coastline. He noted that the Vision Viksit Gujarat @ 2047 aims to harness market opportunities in horticulture, dairy, and fishery, both domestically and internationally. He also highlighted the forestry sector's 18.6% annual growth between 2014-15 and 2022-23. On market reforms, Mishra pointed out that Gujarat was among the first states to implement the Model APMC Act, allowing farmers to sell produce outside regulated markets.
