IMAX collaborates with CAMB.AI to use AI for translating and dubbing original content into multiple languages, aiming to expand its global reach and cater to non-English speaking audiences.

IMAX Embraces AI for Global Content Localization

IMAX, the renowned entertainment technology company, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with CAMB.AI, a Dubai-based AI startup specializing in speech models. This collaboration aims to leverage artificial intelligence for translating and dubbing IMAX's original content, including documentaries, into multiple languages 12.

The Technology Behind the Partnership

CAMB.AI's DubStudio platform, which utilizes proprietary models BOLI (for translation) and MARS (for speech emulation), will be at the forefront of this initiative. These AI models are designed to preserve the original tone, emotion, and prosody of speakers while translating content into over 140 languages 13.

Akshat Prakash, co-founder and CTO of CAMB.AI, emphasized their focused approach: "Some of our models are less than 100 million parameters and are super specialized" 4. This contrasts with the broader, more generalized AI models developed by companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Expanding Global Reach

The partnership is strategically aimed at catering to the growing demand for non-English content worldwide. Mark Welton, Global President of IMAX Theatres, stated, "We are pleased to have the support of CAMB.AI as we look to serve our audiences around the world with original, IMAX-exclusive events and experiences" 1.

IMAX's decision comes in the context of significant growth in the entertainment and media industry, which expanded by 5% to $2.8 trillion in 2023 3. The company is particularly targeting the rising popularity of content from South Korea, Indonesia, and other Southeast Asian countries in Western markets 2.

Implementation and Future Prospects

The AI-powered localization will be rolled out in stages, starting with high-resource languages. IMAX has conducted extensive testing of CAMB.AI's technology on its original content before agreeing to the partnership 14.

While the specific cost savings haven't been disclosed, Mark Welton indicated that the AI deployment would help reduce translation expenses 4. This move could potentially revolutionize how Hollywood entertainment is consumed globally, providing a more immersive viewing experience for non-English speakers 1.

About CAMB.AI

Founded in 2022, CAMB.AI has already deployed its AI dubbing and speech translation technology for live sports events such as the Australian Open and Major League Soccer 24. The company uses a "three-layer" approach, comprising foundation models, infrastructure, and a front-end platform 4.

CAMB.AI recently raised $4 million in a seed round and is reportedly closing a larger pre-Series A round to expand its reach and team size 4.

As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, this partnership between IMAX and CAMB.AI represents a significant step towards breaking language barriers and making immersive cinematic experiences more accessible to global audiences.
