Meta signs new agreements with Invenergy for 791 megawatts of solar and wind power, bolstering its clean energy resources to support AI development and data center operations.

Meta's Clean Energy Expansion

Meta Platforms, the tech giant behind Facebook, has taken a significant step towards powering its growing artificial intelligence (AI) and data center operations with clean energy. The company has inked four new agreements with renewable energy developer Invenergy, securing an additional 791 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind power 1.

Strategic Energy Partnerships

These latest deals build upon a previously announced partnership from 2024, which saw Invenergy providing Meta with 1,000 MW of renewable energy. The new agreements bring the total partnership to an impressive 1,800 MW 2. This expansion underscores Meta's commitment to supporting its operations, data center growth, and clean energy goals.

Project Details and Locations

The new energy projects are strategically located across three U.S. states:

  1. Ohio: Yellow Wood Solar Energy Center (300 MW) and Pleasant Prairie Solar Energy Center (140 MW)
  2. Arkansas: Decoy Solar Energy Center (155 MW)
  3. Texas: Seaway Wind Energy Center (196 MW)

These facilities are expected to commence commercial operations between 2027 and 2028 2.

Meta's AI Ambitions and Energy Needs

Urvi Parkeh, Meta's head of global energy, emphasized the company's focus on advancing its AI ambitions, stating, "We're laser-focused on advancing our AI ambitions -- and to do that, we need clean, reliable energy" 1. This statement highlights the increasing power demands of AI and computing operations in the tech industry.

Diverse Energy Portfolio

Meta's strategy extends beyond solar and wind power. The company is actively exploring other innovative energy solutions:

  1. Nuclear Power: In December, Meta announced plans to seek proposals from nuclear energy developers, targeting 1-4 gigawatts of new nuclear generation capacity in the U.S. starting in the early 2030s 2.

  2. Geothermal Energy: Meta has shown interest in geothermal startups, further diversifying its clean energy portfolio 3.

Impact on Local Communities

The clean energy initiatives are expected to have positive impacts on local communities. For instance, Meta's recent 20-year deal with Constellation Energy to utilize nuclear power is set to preserve 1,100 local jobs and generate $13.5 million in annual tax revenue 1.

Industry Trend

Meta's move is part of a broader trend in the tech industry, with companies prioritizing renewable energy to reduce their carbon footprint, cut costs, and improve sustainability. As large consumers of energy, particularly for data centers, tech giants are increasingly turning to clean energy solutions to power their operations and support their growth in AI and other technologies 2.
