Other AI data center projects may cause similar problems for people living near them. AI hyperscaler CoreWeave is planning a data center expansion that is projected to double the electricity needs of a city near Dallas, Texas, according to Bloomberg. Nevertheless, tech companies are determined to build out massive datacenter projects to power their AI ambitions. Other notable efforts include OpenAI's Stargate project with Oracle and Softbank, as well as xAI's Colossus supercomputer. The Trump administration has largely championed the tech industry's AI data center buildout. President Donald Trump helped OpenAI announce its Stargate project, and has since spoken about efforts to expand America's AI infrastructure. In a column featured in The Economist on Monday, U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright called for the U.S. to "lead the next major energy-intensive frontier: artificial intelligence." He noted that AI transforms electricity into the "most valuable output imaginable: intelligence," and that the federal government would accelerate the production of energy derived from coal, nuclear, geothermal, and natural gas. With the support of federal officials, the AI industry seems poised to soak up much of America's energy in the years to come. Experts estimate that data centers could account for 20% of America's energy consumption by 2030, up from just 2.5% in 2022. Without rapidly increased energy production, that could cause even more problems for communities.

The company has been poaching AI researchers, while CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Monday that Meta is building a 5-gigawatt data center called Hyperion. The urgency is palpable. As SemiAnalysis reported last week and Business Insider noted, Meta is so eager to boost its computing power that it's literally erecting tents for temporary data center capacity while its facilities are still under construction. These are all signs that Meta wants to build up its AI capacity faster after falling behind competitors like OpenAI, xAI, and Google -- and that Zuckerberg isn't willing to wait for typical construction timelines to close the gap. "This design isn't about beauty or redundancy. It's about getting compute online fast!" SemiAnalysis said in its report. "From prefabricated power and cooling modules to ultra-light structures, speed is of the essence as there is no backup generation (ie, no diesel generators in sight)," it added. As for its Hyperion data center, Meta spokesperson Ashley Gabriel tells TechCrunch that it will be located in Louisiana and will likely have a capacity of 2 gigawatts by 2030.

That includes building "tented" data centers, rather than traditionally roofed structures. Even if no one has quite made the AI business model profitable yet, that isn't stopping the world's largest tech companies from investing a collective hundreds of billions of dollars in powering the AI future they are so sure is coming. Alongside Nvidia pushing $500 billion global datacenter investment, and Elon Musk's xAI shipping a power station across the world, Meta is building a number of gigantic datacenters of its own. One of those will reportedly be as large as a sizeable portion of Manhattan. Although its Llama models might not be capturing the AI zeitgeist like Meta hoped, it may soon be leading the way in domestic AI compute power. Earlier this month, Semi-Analysis reported that Meta will be the first company to build out and deploy a gigawatt-scale datacenter for AI. That will give it over three billion TFLOPS of compute power, we're told. And according to Mark Zuckerberg, this is just the beginning. The 1GW "Prometheus" datacenter will come online in 2026, but Meta is also building "Hyperion," he said, which will take a few years to build up to scale and will eventually require as much as 5GW of power. Meta is also working on several other data centers in the longer term, and each of these "titan clusters" could be as large as a sizeable portion of Manhattan. The self-styled "Zuck" went on to say that "Meta Superintelligence Labs will have industry-leading levels of compute and by far the greatest compute per researcher," which may hint at the business model Meta is targeting. If it can't build the AI itself, perhaps it could join Amazon and other entities, like Groq, in providing the infrastructure to power it. That competition will mean Meta needs to scale up fast if it wants to be competitive, and that seems to be exactly what it's doing. Semi-Analysis detailed how Meta has reinvented its datacenter strategy about building them with AI in mind. Borrowing inspiration from xAI's Memphis site, Meta will reportedly use a new "tent" style of structure that is faster to build and has less redundancy to further increase the pace of deployment. Where traditional data centers have backup diesel generators should they encounter a power outage, the new Meta sites will do away with that entirely. They will also leverage pre-fabricated power and cooling modules and will draw power from on-site meta substations, with smart workload management tools helping to maximize the power available to each datacenter. That can also include on-site natural gas generation, too, with Meta already building two 200MW natural gas plants in Ohio.

For perspective, the world's leading supercomputer, El Capitan, uses only 30 megawatts, or about three times the amount of power used in the neighboring city of Livermore, California. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's xAI "Colossus" data center in Memphis has been estimated to use 150 megawatts, although that's bound to grow as the facility expands. Zuckerberg's post is the latest sign of how aggressively the largest tech companies are racing to build AI that promises to surpass human intelligence. In addition to the data center push, Meta has been offering huge compensation packages, at up to over $100 million, to poach the top AI researchers from companies including OpenAI and Apple. Whether he can turn that money into profit is questionable, however, as the company has splashed around $60 billion on its "Reality Labs" since 2020, in pursuit of virtual reality and metaverse products and services. The company has delivered some impressive VR headsets and smart glasses, without pointing to profits, huge user numbers, or developer enthusiasm. Meta's AI business has produced sophisticated open-source models, but its AI-powered services available to users of its social networks aren't remarkable compared to rival offerings. The company's AI apps that target and create advertising have made a decent contribution to revenue growth, and Zuckerberg predicts they will make a bigger impact in coming years. ®

"What the data centers don't understand is that they're taking up the community wealth," he said. "We just don't have the water." This same worrying story is playing out across the country. Data center hot spots in Texas, Arizona, Louisiana and Colorado are also taxing local water reserves. As Musk has ramped up construction in Memphis, the company reportedly brought in 35 portable methane gas turbines without air permits to power the project. Those turbines, capable of providing power to a neighborhood of 50,000 homes, could also emit up to 130 tons of harmful nitrogen oxides per year, per NPR. Meta's project in Ohio doesn't appear to be much cleaner. According to SemiAnalysis, Meta is building two separate 200MW on-site natural gas plants to help meet the energy demands of its data center. While natural gas plants are cleaner than alternatives like coal (which the Trump administration has given AI companies the go-ahead to use if they want), they still produce a considerable amount of pollutants, including nitrogen oxides linked to heightened cancer risks for exposed communities. Earlier this year, Zuckerberg pledged to drop up to $72 billion on AI projects to compete with the OpenAIs and xAIs of the world. It might be nice if he spent a fraction of that on making sure those projects aren't significantly harming the quality of life of people who have the misfortune of living near his data centers.

We've reported on the rapid, almost-certainly-ecologically-unsound expansion of AI data centers before, but Meta appears to have taken things to the next level. And that level is camping. According to a SemiAnalysis report, Meta is expanding its AI hardware capabilities so rapidly, it's putting some of its AI data center hardware in tents. Erecting brick and mortar (or steel and, err, probably steel) buildings to house vast racks of AI-chomping machines is a slow process, and AI development, it appears, waits for no construction worker. So, tents it is. Business Insider reports that a Meta spokesperson has confirmed its new tent-based-infrastructure, although stresses that the entire supercluster isn't currently housed in canvas. I would imagine these are ancillary racks hooked into a main cluster nearby, not least because cooling is a massive concern for these sorts of setups and a tent is, well, a tent. You could pull up the sides and let the wind blow through, I guess, but I'd imagine Meta wants to be a bit more scientific than that and is offloading its less-critical hardware to the outside world while it awaits a more permanent home.
