But no longer: acknowledging its relatively lengthy (at least for the AI industry) period of quiet, Pika today announced it is launching Pika 1.5, an updated version of its model that offers eye-popping, physics defying special effects or "Pikaffects" that can transform imagery subjects into bizarrely malleable versions of themselves. These animated special effects are available from a new button labeled Pikaeffects, and include the following pre-sets: Explode it, melt it, crush it, inflate it and "cake-ify it" -- the latter of which essentially turns your image subject into the meme videos of highly realistic prop cakes. Pika 1.5 will automatically seek to identify the subjects or objects in the video and apply the corresponding effect, even if it's not possible for that subject or object to transform in that way in reality. Some of the effects -- namely crush it, squish it, and cake-ify -- actually insert new props such as a hydraulic press, human hands and a knife into the frame, yet allow them to interact with the objects in the still image and thus, resulting video. The results are often hilariously incongruous yet convincing, with Pikaffects turning the entire world into a playground of convincing yet surprising deformations. The timing of the release, right after rival models like Runway Gen-3, Hotshot, and Luma Labs' Dream Machine 1.5, suggests the competition to dominate AI videos is far from over, even as people await a wider release of OpenAI" s Sora model. Pika 1.5 ups the photorealism and gives more camera control to users, with some pretty impressive results. But the Pikaffects are definitely the showstopper tools, with bizarre changes to physics that seem to blend into the reality of the video even if they would be impossible to film in real life. A new button in the Pika interface opens up the list of options for what to do with objects in the video. So, you might want to see a dog inflate like a balloon and float away, see a castle melt like butter, watch a sandwich get crushed, a car explode, or a kitten get squished. You can do all of the above using buttons with the respective verbs on them. It doesn't happen out of nowhere, either. The buttons cause hands to come in and squish the cat, or a hydraulic press to crush the sandwich. The most bizarre button will take an object and "Cake-ify it," meaning that the subject becomes a cake that looks like something else, a la the popular meme and TV show. As with the other Pikaffects, the cake-ify option leads to someone with a knife cutting into the object to reveal it is cake. All of the object identification is automatic, so you don't need to spend a lot of time manually editing the effect into place, as seen in the video below. Pikaffects aren't the only upgrade made possible on Pika 1.5. The five-second video clips are much better at realistic motion on foot and in vehicles. The motion update extends to the camera too, with new controls letting you simulate The Matrix films' Bullet Time effect, along with getting the camera to Crane Down, Dolly Left, and Pan Swipe. These updates aim to give creators more control over their videos, helping them achieve a professional, cinematic look without the need for deep technical knowledge. Pika's efforts are impressive, but the company faces a mushrooming number of rivals, with existing competitors eager to offer their own take on AI video-making. Still, Pikaffects are an unexpected addition to the variety available and may help Pika Labs carve out a distinct niche. If you want to try out Pika 1.5, it's available to both free and paid Pika users, with limits on the free tier. You can also switch back to Pika 1.0 if you want. The older version has its own special features not yet available in the new model, such as the AI Sound Effects and Lip Sync features. If you subscribe you'll get more access to all of the models and their features, but while the subscription prices are the same, the credit cost for a clip has risen to 15 credits. Pika, an AI video platform, has launched its 1.5 model with quirky features allowing users to crush, inflate, and squish objects. Pika 1.5 has a focus on hyper-realism which is what the company's founders believe its customers want. Like most generative AI tools, users can create whatever they like from a prompt but 1.5 also includes the ability to blow things up -- from teddy bears to wedding cakes. These new physics are called "Pikaffects" and they are highly entertaining. PetaPixel tried the "Melt it" effect using a photo of a dog as the input which turned out pretty good -- it even does a sound effect. There are six Pikaffects in total, the others being Inflate it, Explode it, Squish it, Crush it, and Cake-ify it. The last one turns the desired object into a cake and a knife appears to slice it, in case you were wondering. Other advancements since Pika released version 1.0 are "more lifelike human and creature motion" and advanced camera movements like bullet time, dolly movements, and panning. Users can sign up right now and start using Pika 1.5. The free plan gets the user 150 monthly video credits but be warned you might wait a long time for each generation. There are three paid plans: The $8 a month Standard plan with 700 monthly video credits and a host of other features; the $28 a month Pro plan with 2000 monthly video credits; and the $76 a month Unlimited plan. All paid plans get faster generations. Pika has raised $135 million in funding which is a "new benchmark for the industry" and the CEO is just 26 years old. "Pika's user interface is intuitive for everyone, from children to grandparents, and its cinematic-style video generation allows any idea to be transformed into stunning visuals," says Pika.
