Samsung Galaxy phones can now stop sophisticated voice phishing scams in their tracks
Samsung is rolling out an intelligent new scam detection feature that none of the competing phone brands currently offer. For reference, Google offers what is widely known as Call Screening, a feature that essentially answers calls on your behalf and probes what the call is about. Apple, on the other hand, offers Silence Unknown Callers feature that prevents you from getting calls from people you don't know. Samsung already offers similar functionality with its Bixby Text Call and Smart Call features, and it now seems to be rolling out a new feature that directly addresses the growing threat of AI-powered voice phishing attacks. The new feature is called Voice Phishing Suspected Call Alert, and before you get too excited, no, it isn't available globally just yet (via 9to5Google). The feature is currently limited to users in Korea, though it does have the potential to eventually make its way out to more regions. Although the tech giant didn't detail how exactly it spots voice spoofing, it did say that it detects and learns by tapping into data from Korea's National Police Agency and the National Institute of Scientific Investigation, with all detection taking place on-device. The feature might be limited to outgoing calls Close When speaking to someone that's not saved as a contact on your Galaxy device, the ongoing call UI will highlight a "Detecting" pop-up, indicating that Voice Phishing Suspected Call Alert is in operation. If and when a voice phishing is detected, users will receive an immediate notification that's accompanied by sound and vibration, as seen in the screenshots above. From what I could infer by translating the Korean blog post into English, it looks like the feature will only work when you are making an outgoing call to an unsaved number, and not when you receive a call from an unsaved number. This is a significant limitation, and potentially one that Samsung will address in the future. The feature is limited to Galaxy devices running stable One UI 8, which means it can currently only be utilized by those who purchased the South Korean tech giant's latest foldables. Samsung's New Phone Feature can Detect Fake AI Callers - Phandroid
Samsung's continued roll-out of its One UI 8 software update to users has resulted in some pretty useful features, and the company has more recently added a new AI-powered "Voice Phishing" function to the Phone app in One UI 8, which is currently exclusive for users in South Korea. READ: Samsung's One UI 8 Beta Rolls Out for More Devices Samsung says that the feature has been trained using data from the National Police Agency and the National Institute of Scientific Investigation in Korea, and works with select phone models. Users can enable a "Voice Phishing Suspected Call Notification" toggle within their Phone app's settings, which will then detect if an incoming call is using a fake AI caller, something that's been used to trick victims into revealing sensitive information. The feature can also distinguish between "suspected" and "detected" phishing calls, in which case it will be tagged within a users' call logs. While Samsung hasn't mentioned if the feature will arrive for more regions in the future, we can imagine that it would be a very useful one especially in a day and age where AI can be used for less-than-honest activities online.

This means that users with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 foldable smartphones can try out the feature. The company is expected to expand the feature to more markets in the coming months. According to a company representative, Samsung users will see a "detecting" message when dialling an unsaved number. It is currently available in Korean, and works for outgoing calls. "When calling an unknown number, we detect and notify you in real time using AI whether there is a suspicion of voice phishing", the post read. If a potential threat is identified, users will receive an instant alert through sound and vibration. Samsung states that the Voice Phishing Suspected Call Alert feature detects voice phishing by using data from the National Police Agency and the National Institute of Scientific Investigation. The post includes machine-translated screenshots of the feature. The Voice Phishing Suspected Call Alert feature can be accessed by heading to the phone's app and selecting Settings > Voice Phishing Suspected Call Notification > Voice phishing suspected call notification, to activate the functinality. The feature is currently exclusive to Samsung Galaxy devices running the stable version of One UI 8, meaning it's only available on Samsung's newest foldable phones for now. Interested users can check their One UI version by following Settings > Software update > Download and install to get the latest update. The Voice Phishing detection feature is limited to Korea at the moment. Samsung is expected to bring it to global users, but there's no word on when that will take place, or how many regions will be supported. Samsung launched its Android 16-based One UI 8 build at the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 last month. The newly launched Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7, and Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE models shipped with the new interface. Samsung's One UI 8 Beta programme is currently available for a few Galaxy flagships. It is confirmed to be open for the Galaxy S24 series and last year's foldable smartphones in the coming weeks.
