SK hynix Reports Record-Breaking Q3 2024 Financial Results

SK hynix Inc., a leading global semiconductor supplier, has announced unprecedented financial results for the third quarter of 2024, showcasing the company's strong position in the AI memory market. The South Korean tech giant reported record-breaking revenues and profits, largely driven by the increasing demand for AI-related memory products 12.

Financial Highlights

  • Revenues: 17.5731 trillion won (all-time high)
  • Operating Profit: 7.03 trillion won (40% margin)
  • Net Profit: 5.7534 trillion won (33% margin)

These figures represent significant improvements over previous records, with quarterly revenues exceeding the previous high by more than 1 trillion won. The operating and net profits have surpassed the records set during the semiconductor super boom in Q3 2018 12.

AI Memory Demand Fuels Growth

The company attributes its success to the strong demand for AI memory, particularly from data center customers. Sales of premium products such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and enterprise Solid-State Drives (eSSD) have been instrumental in achieving these results. Notably, HBM sales showed remarkable growth:

  • 70% increase from the previous quarter
  • Over 330% increase year-over-year

HBM sales accounted for 30% of total DRAM revenues in Q3 and are expected to reach 40% in Q4 12.

Product Performance and Strategy

Both DRAM and NAND flash memory segments saw improvements in average selling prices (ASP), with mid-10% increases compared to the previous quarter. This rise in ASP, coupled with the focus on highly profitable premium products, contributed to the company's record-breaking operating profit 12.

SK hynix is actively transitioning from HBM3 to HBM3E 8-layer products in the DRAM sector. The company also plans to begin supplying 12-layer HBM3E products in Q4 2024, following successful mass production initiation last month 2.

For NAND flash, the strategy involves expanding sales of high-capacity eSSDs while optimizing production and investment efficiency 12.

Future Outlook and AI Market Trends

SK hynix predicts continued strong demand for AI memory in 2025, citing the development of multi-modal generative AI and ongoing investments in artificial general intelligence (AGI) by global tech companies. The company also anticipates growth in PC and mobile product markets as AI-optimized memories for these devices are introduced 12.

Kim Woohyun, Vice President and CFO at SK hynix, stated, "SK hynix has solidified its position as the world's No.1 AI memory company by achieving the highest business performance ever in the third quarter of this year." He added that the company aims to maintain profitability and secure stable revenues through flexible product and supply strategies aligned with market demand 12.

As the AI memory market continues to evolve, SK hynix appears well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for high-performance memory solutions in the AI and data center sectors.
