Vercel debuts an AI model optimized for web development | TechCrunch
The team behind Vercel's V0, an AI-powered platform for web creation, has developed an AI model it claims excels at certain website development tasks. Available through an API, the model, called "v0-1.0-md," can be prompted with text or images, and was "optimized for front-end and full-stack web development," the Vercel team says. Currently in beta, it requires a V0 Premium plan ($20 per month) or Team plan ($30 per user per month) with usage-based billing enabled. The launch of V0's model comes as more developers and companies look to adopt AI-powered tools for programming. According to a Stack Overflow survey last year, around 82% of developers reported that they're using AI tools for writing code. Meanwhile, a quarter of startups in Y Combinator's W25 batch have 95% of their codebases generated by AI, per YC managing partner Jared Friedman. Vercel's model can "auto-fix" common coding issues, the Vercel team says, and it's compatible with tools and SDKs that support OpenAI's API format. Evaluated on web development frameworks like Next.js, the model can ingest up to 128,000 tokens in one go. Tokens are the raw bits of data that AI models work with, with a million tokens being equivalent to about 750,000 words (roughly 163,000 words longer than "War and Peace"). Vercel isn't the only outfit developing tailored models for programming, it should be noted. Last month, JetBrains, the company behind a range of popular app development tools, debuted its first "open" AI coding model. Last week, Windsurf released a family of programming-focused models dubbed SWE-1. And just yesterday, Mistral unveiled a model, Devstral, tuned for particular developer tasks. Companies may be keen to develop -- and embrace -- AI-powered coding assistants, but models still struggle to produce quality software. Code-generating AI tends to introduce security vulnerabilities and errors, owing to weaknesses in areas like the ability to understand programming logic.

Vibe Coding Platform v0 Is Now Releasing a Web-Dev AI Model
The v0 AI model has a context window of up to 1,28,000 tokens The API comes with a limit of a maximum of 200 messages a day v0 AI model supports both text and images as input Vercel, the company behind the vibe coding platform for web application development, v0, is now releasing an artificial intelligence (AI) model. Announced on Thursday, the v0 AI model is available via an application programming interface (API), as well as other formats. It is the first AI model developed by the company. The San Francisco-based cloud platform as a service (PaaS) company says the AI model is specialised for web application development (front and back-end) tasks, and is compatible with OpenAI's API. In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the official handle of v0, announced the release of the new AI model. It is the same model that powers the vibe coding platform v0, and the company says it specialises in website development knowledge. It is currently available in beta via the company API, as an AI software development kit (SDK), or via AI Playground. Vercel says the AI model, officially named v0-1.0-md, supports both text and images as input and is designed to provide responses fast. Additionally, the model is also compatible with the OpenAI Chat Completions API format. It features a context window of up to 1,28,000 tokens, and has a maximum output context size of 32,000 tokens. The model has a limit of a maximum of 200 messages per day. The v0 AI model can perform framework-aware completions and has been tested on Next.js and Vercel's stack. It can identify and fix bugs, glitches, and other coding errors during generation, as well as add inline edits whenever necessary. Notably, the v0 API is currently available in beta to developers who have an active Premium or Team subscription with usage-based billing enabled. The AI model costs $3 (roughly Rs. 260) per million input tokens and $15 (roughly Rs. 1,290) per million output tokens. Vibe coding is quickly becoming a popular way to code among developers. The term refers to describing coding tasks in natural language to AI models, which then do the code writing. This type of coding allows the human operator to take a strategy-driven role, where they give direction to the project, check for errors, and ensure the final vision is achieved.

Vercel's release comes at a time when AI-powered coding tools are gaining significant traction in the developer community. A Stack Overflow survey reported that approximately 82% of developers are using AI tools for writing code 1. This trend is also reflected in the startup ecosystem, with a quarter of Y Combinator's W25 batch having 95% of their codebases generated by AI 1.
However, Vercel is not alone in this space. Other companies have also introduced specialized AI models for programming:
While AI-powered coding assistants are becoming increasingly popular, it's important to note that these models still face challenges in producing high-quality, secure software. Code-generating AI has been known to introduce security vulnerabilities and errors, particularly in areas requiring complex programming logic 1.
As the field of AI-assisted coding continues to evolve, developers and companies will need to balance the benefits of increased productivity with the need for careful code review and testing to ensure the quality and security of the software produced.
