In a blog post, YouTube announced that it is extending the duration of Shorts to up to three minutes starting October 15. This change will apply to videos created in square or taller aspect ratios, but won't affect existing Shorts. The company noted it was a "top requested feature" by creators. Creators will also be able to keep up with the latest trends by creating familiar content with the addition of a template feature. They can match their clips to the trending sounds and then customise them further. Shorts can be recreated by tapping the Remix option next to Shorts and then selecting Use this template. Over the next few months, YouTube will also be rolling out the ability to access its videos in the Shorts camera. This is claimed to make creating remixes easier. Shorts creators will also be able to pull clips directly from YouTube videos to use in their content. The video-streaming platform also re-emphasized that it will be rolling out Google DeepMind's Veo video-generation AI model in the coming months, bringing more video backgrounds and standalone video clips. YouTube says is making it easier for viewers to catch up on the latest trends with a new Shorts trends page on mobile. Comments will also be previewed in the Shorts feed, allowing creators to get a sneak peek of what their audience is saying. However, if Shorts are not preferred by the YouTube user, they can now customise their recommendations by selecting the Show fewer Shorts option.

Shorts is also getting AI custom backgrounds, the ability to hide Shorts grid from the home feed, and more. Short-form content has been a hit on YouTube ever since the platform introduced Shorts. While it's fun scrolling endlessly on videos that are 60 seconds or shorter, every once in a while, you may wish that a video could have been longer. Well, it looks like YouTube has listened, and you'll soon see longer videos on Shorts. In an official blog post, YouTube revealed a slew of updates for its Shorts platform. The biggest of these changes is that creators will now be able to upload Shorts "up to 3 minutes long". This will apply to videos with tall or square aspect ratios. The platform is also rolling out a Templates feature. This will allow creators to re-use video styles and sounds from others' videos when making their own Shorts. Users can access templates by accessing the Remix option when viewing a Shorts video and tapping on Use this template to recreate it their own way. Another thing shared here seems to be the Dream Screen feature that we were fortunate to check out at the recent "Google for India" event. The feature implements Google DeepMind models to create custom backgrounds so that creators can be more expressive with their work. Furthermore, YouTube is giving users the freedom to customize their feed. If you don't like to see Shorts on your home feed, you can temporarily hide them. You'll be able to hide a Shorts grid from your home feed by tapping on the 3-dots icon and choosing Show fewer Shorts. Lastly, the platform is also adding a new Shorts "Trends" page on the YouTube mobile apps. This page will make it easier for users to discover what's trending in their region. As for availability, Longer Shorts will be available to creators starting from October 15 with the rest of the additions rolling out shortly. YouTube says we may see the Dream Screen feature sometime "later this year". Creators will also soon be able to use Veo, Google's AI model for generating videos, to generate YouTube Shorts. The AI will help create new backgrounds and clips that can be added to Shorts.

YouTube states that the change only "applies to videos that are square or taller in aspect ratio." Videos from before Oct. 15 won't be affected. The company claims TikTok users spend 50% of their time watching longer content. To encourage creativity, YouTube is simplifying the process of remixing Shorts. First, the company will introduce pre-made templates, allowing people to remake their bite-sized clips by adding flair. Templates can be accessed by tapping "Remix" within a Short and selecting "Use this template". Over the coming months, remixing on YouTube will expand, offering access to other content. Users, for example, could "pull from multiple clips" when creating a new Short. In mid-September, YouTube announced it would introduce Google's generative AI tool Veo to the platform. The model will create detailed backgrounds and standalone video clips for creators to use anytime. In September, it was unknown when Veo would be introduced. The company still hasn't given an exact date, but confirmed the AI will come out by the end of 2024. Fans of YouTube Shorts are gaining new ways to discover what's hot. A Trends page is being added to the YouTube mobile app where users can find the most popular clips in their country. Details are scarce but it sounds similar to an Instagram Live chat feed. Conversely, if you don't like YouTube Shorts or want to see less of them, the platform is introducing the option to "Show fewer Shorts". The announcement states that if you tap the three dots menu above a Shorts grid on mobile, you'll receive the option to lessen the content's frequency temporarily.
