New research highlights how AI-powered low-code solutions are driving innovation and productivity in application development across the Asia-Pacific region, with 40% of new apps projected to incorporate GenAI by 2026.

AI and Low-Code Synergy Reshaping APAC's Application Development Landscape

A new IDC InfoBrief, sponsored by OutSystems, reveals a significant shift in application development across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. The research highlights the growing synergy between AI and low-code technologies, which is accelerating innovation and productivity in software development 1.

Legacy Systems and Skills Shortage

Over 60% of applications in APAC are legacy systems, presenting challenges such as rigid architectures and high maintenance costs. The prevailing skills shortage further compounds these issues. To address these challenges, 68% of APAC enterprises are adopting modern development tools, including low-code platforms, integrated development environments (IDEs), and DevOps 1.

The Rise of AI-Powered Low-Code Solutions

While low-code platforms already streamline software development, AI-powered low-code solutions are taking efficiency to new heights. These advanced tools automate complex processes and deliver intelligent insights, boosting both efficiency and innovation. Consequently, 25% of APAC enterprises are now prioritizing the integration of generative AI (GenAI) into developer tools 2.

Future of Intelligent App Development

IDC forecasts that by 2026, 40% of new applications in APAC will be "intelligent apps" incorporating GenAI. The top impact areas of GenAI in software development include increased productivity (61%), high-value dev tasks/creativity (50%), and accelerated developer velocity (40%) 1.

Low-Code Adoption Trends

Low-code adoption is accelerating across APAC, with one-third of enterprises recognizing it as a critical tool for automation and future-proofing. Southeast Asia and Hong Kong lead the region, with 49% of enterprises prioritizing low-code for automation solutions, followed by India (35%) and Australia (31%) 2.

Economic Resilience and Investment

Despite economic uncertainties, AI and automation initiatives, along with application development platforms, remain resilient to budget cuts. In fact, 30% of APAC enterprises are willing to pay a premium of 11-20% for GenAI features integrated into app development environments 1.

Global Impact and Future Projections

The trend towards low-code adoption extends beyond APAC. IDC predicts that by 2025, more than 60% of enterprises globally will adopt low-code technologies to enable faster application delivery and improve operational efficiency 2.
