Anthropic, which makes the Claude AI model, has existing European offices in London, Dublin, and Zurich. In a blog post, the company said the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region is its fastest-growing market, adding that the number of high-spending customers - those paying at least $100,000 (more than €86,000) - has grown more than 10 times over the past year. "Europe is home to some of the world's most important and forward-thinking companies," Anthropic Managing Director of International Chris Ciauri said in a statement. He added that the expansion will help Anthropic meet demand from European users. Germany and France both rank among the top 20 global users of Claude per capita, according to the company. Anthropic listed companies including L'Oréal, BMW, SAP, and Sanofi as current subscribers, saying they use Claude for "key tasks like writing new computer programmes, improving software and resolving network issues". The San Francisco-based startup was founded by former members of OpenAI and has positioned itself as a safer alternative to its Microsoft-backed competitor, by emphasising its commitment to privacy and security. It was recently valued at $183 billion (€158.4 billion) and is reportedly in talks with Google to increase its investment.

"Europe is home to some of the world's most important and forward-thinking companies," said Chris Ciauri, Anthropic's Managing Director of International. "The business leaders I speak to are clear-eyed on both the immense opportunity that AI development represents and the critical importance of safety, reliability, and public trust." He added that it was strengthening its leadership team and "doubling down on sustained EMEA growth and building the team our European users need". Existing enterprise clients in Europe include SAP, N26, Lovable, BMW, Sanofi and L'Oreal. Guillaume Princen heads up EMEA Startups, Thomas Remy is the new head of EMEA South and Pip White is the new Head of EMEA North, and will be based in Anthropic's London office. White has a long background in enterprise technology at the likes of Salesforce, Google, and Slack. It fits with Anthropic's clear strategy to focus efforts on paying enterprise customers. Just last month, Anthropic announced its largest enterprise deal to date - an expanded alliance with Deloitte to make Claude available to Deloitte's 470,000-strong workforce, and to develop new "industry-specific solutions" powered by Claude. Founded by Open AI alumni Dario and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic was built on the principles of responsible AI, and has favoured strong regulation.
