LONDON, April 7 (Reuters) - Anthropic, the U.S. AI company behind the Claude chatbot, said on Monday it would create more than 100 roles in Europe, including in Dublin and London, as it appointed Guillaume Princen as its Europe, Middle East and Africa head. The company, which is backed by Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab and Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab, said the jobs would be in sales, engineering, research and business operations, mainly across its Dublin and London offices. Princen, who previously led Stripe's European expansion and was CEO of expenses management platform Mooncard, said the growth in Europe and the UK came at a critical moment when businesses needed advanced AI capabilities. The start-up intends to hire employees primarily in its Dublin and London offices. The new hires will be spread across sales, engineering, research and business operation roles. Today (8 April), Anthropic also announced Guillaume Princen - a former lead at Stripe - to head its Europe, Middle East and African (EMEA) operations. Princen previously led Stripe's expansion in Europe as its EMEA head for more than seven years. He was Stripe's first employee outside the US when he joined in 2014. During his time at the fintech, he opened 12 offices and established EMEA as a growth driver for the business. Recently, he served as the CEO of Mooncard, a European corporate expanses management platform. Princen is also actively involved in the European tech start-up ecosystem as both an angel investor and advisor. "Our expansion across Europe and the UK comes at a critical moment when businesses need advanced AI capabilities that also prioritise security and privacy," Princen said. While earlier this year, the start-up opened a small research-focused office in Zurich led by AI scientist Neil Houlsby. Anthropic's Claude has a large clientele spread worldwide. The chatbot is used by Intercom in Ireland to power its customer service platform, assisting the company's 25,000 customers. While Germany's BMW uses a Claude-powered data interpreter to improve vehicle development and production. Moreover, Denmark's Novo Nordisk, the firm behind the diabetes medicine Ozempic, uses Claude to draft clinical study reports. The start-up is seen as a key competitor to OpenAI. Last week, the two firms both rolled out AI education services within a day of each other, intensifying their attempts at capturing new users in the education market through partnerships with universities and institutions.
