Apple Intelligence's ChatGPT integration will use GPT-5 starting with iOS 26
OpenAI just announced its GPT-5 AI model on Thursday, but you won't be able to use it with Apple Intelligence's ChatGPT integration until iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26, Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac. Apple Intelligence can rely on ChatGPT for things like helping answer certain Siri queries or alongside Apple's Google Lens-like Visual Intelligence feature, but right now, it uses OpenAI's GPT-4o model. Apple has only publicly said its next major software updates will arrive in the "fall," and they'll probably launch for everyone next month. But I've asked Apple if GPT-5 will be included with the developer and / or public betas of those updates, and if so, when it might be available.

Can GPT-5 fix Apple Intelligence? We're about to find out
Apple Intelligence will be upgraded with GPT-5. GPT-5 is OpenAI's recently launched most capable model.Users will be able to access GPT-5 in iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26. OpenAI released GPT-5 on Thursday, saying it's the company's most capable, smartest, and fastest model to date. While everyone, including free users, can access the model for free today via ChatGPT, Apple device users will be able to try it out even more easily. Apple's first foray into the AI race was the launch of Apple Intelligence in 2024. Taking its time to enter the AI space, the company took a different approach from competitors, forgoing the release of its own AI models and choosing to use OpenAI's instead via an integration with ChatGPT. Soon, that integration will use GPT-5. Also: 3 Apple Intelligence features that would convince me to ditch Gemini and ChatGPT Apple confirmed to me that the iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and MacOS 26 operating systems, which are slated to launch in the fall, will be accompanied by GPT-5. Currently, with the existing ChatGPT integration, Apple users have the option to send Siri queries to ChatGPT instead if they're better suited for the chatbot's capabilities. Other integrations are ChatGPT with Writing Tools, which uses the chatbot to compose text or images in different areas of the interface, and ChatGPT with visual intelligence, which leverages ChatGPT's multimodal capabilities to give users insights into their surroundings. Because of the update, all of the aforementioned functionalities should give users better answers. For example, at launch, OpenAI claimed GPT-5 is the most capable writing collaborator, which should improve users' output when using Writing Tools to compose emails, texts, and more. The model is also more accurate than any previous reasoning model and has fewer hallucinations. GPT-5's responses are 45% less likely to contain a factual error than GPT-4o with web search enabled on anonymized prompts, according to OpenAI. Also: This free GPT-5 feature is flying under the radar - but it's a game changer for me GPT-5's biggest appeal is that it is a unified model that combines a smart model for most queries with a deeper reasoning model for harder problems. Then it uses a real router feature that allows GPT-5 to understand which model to use automatically based on the conversation, complexity of the prompt, and more. This allows users to take advantage of the best OpenAI's models have to offer in terms of quality and speed. Now, Apple users should be able to experience the same thing natively, which should, in theory, improve the Apple Intelligence experience as a whole. Do I think it will make a big change? No, only because I don't know many Apple users who rely on ChatGPT integrations very often. However, it is nice knowing that even when you do reach for the features once in a while, they will be reportedly state of the art. I am more excited about the many iOS 26 AI features that have been announced and are slated to be released. While less flashy, they are bound to improve the user experience. Some favorites include the Visual Intelligence expansion to the iPhone screen, real-time translation on FaceTime and Messages, and AutoMix in Apple Music. Also: I used Perplexity to make a restaurant reservation - now I'm wondering if Google is holding us back If you can't wait to get started with GPT-5 and want to try it out for yourself, you can do so simply by visiting the ChatGPT website or app and signing in to your account. If you don't have one, creating one is easy -- just use Google, Microsoft, Apple or even your phone number. Once you're signed in, the model picker will automatically be set to GPT-5.

Apple will bring GPT-5 to Apple Intelligence in iOS, iPad OS and macOS 26
OpenAI finally released its long-awaited model this week, unsurprisingly proclaiming it its best yet with regards to coding, accuracy, safety and more. CEO Sam Altman even compared the jump up in quality to when the iPhone first adopted a Retina display in a press briefing ahead of the announcement. Big talk indeed. Given ChatGPT's integration with , you might be wondering when the latest model will arrive on the devices that support it. The answer is sooner rather than later, according to . Apple told the publication in a statement that Apple Intelligence will leverage GPT-5 in , iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26. Those software updates are set to arrive in their final form, as they traditionally do, at the tail end of the summer, so you won't have to wait long. Currently, is an optional add-on to Apple's own AI model. It can be accessed by Siri when you're making a request that Apple Intelligence on its own might not be able to handle, with Apple using the example of questions about photos and documents. ChatGPT also integrates with Camera Control in your iPhone's Camera app to learn more about your environment, and if you connect your ChatGPT account you can save your requests in your personal history. ChatGPT has to be activated as an extension to Apple Intelligence in settings, and if you turn it off you won't have to worry about Siri turning to an external model if you're about it doing so. OpenAI says GPT-5 is its to date, thanks in part to a new feature called Safe Completions, which means it will attempt to give the most helpful answer it can within safety parameters imposed by its maker. GPT-5 is free for everyone, but OpenAI offers tiered paid plans for heavier users, from its $20 per month ChatGPT Plus subscription, right up to the $200 per month that offers unlimited use. If you have one of these plans, you can log in through Apple Intelligence and gain all the same benefits. Engadget has reached out to Apple for comment as we'll update this article if we get a response.

iOS 26 to Bring ChatGPT-5 Integration to Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence will integrate OpenAI's newly launched ChatGPT-5 model when iOS 26 arrives next month, Apple has confirmed (via 9to5Mac). The integration means Siri will tap into the latest AI model when Apple's own systems can't handle specific requests. ChatGPT-5, which OpenAI announced Thursday, offers enhanced reasoning capabilities and coding tools, and better voice interaction and video perception, compared to the current GPT-4o model powering Apple Intelligence. Currently, ChatGPT can be invoked selectively within Apple Intelligence for tasks like web searches, document queries, and Visual Intelligence on iPhone 15 Pro and later models. Users can access these features without an OpenAI account, although linking one enables subscription benefits. Apple Intelligence will also gain new capabilities in iOS 26, including Live Translation for real-time conversation interpretation in FaceTime and Messages, plus Visual Intelligence upgrades for systemwide content searching. When iOS 18 communicates ChatGPT, Apple obscures IP addresses and prevents OpenAI from storing user requests, and the same technique will be used in iOS 26 to maintain privacy. The software update will arrive alongside the expected iPhone 17 launch next month.

Apple comfirms ChatGPT-iPhone integration is getting even better with iOS 26
OpenAI's newest model, GPT-5, will be integrated into your iPhone this September. One of the best parts of Apple Intelligence is Siri's ability to integrate with ChatGPT. When Apple's AI chatbot is stumped by a question, it can tap into ChatGPT's vast knowledge base (upon request) to provide the proper answer. And when iOS 26 launches in the fall, ChatGPT will be even better. Apple has confirmed (via 9to5Mac) that Apple Intelligence will upgrade to GPT-5 when iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26 launch this fall. The current integration relies on GPT-4o, which first launched in May 2024. According to OpenAI, GPT-5 is "a significant leap in intelligence over all our previous models, featuring state-of-the-art performance across coding, math, writing, health, visual perception, and more. It is a unified system that knows when to respond quickly and when to think longer to provide expert-level responses." Of course, Apple is expected to make Siri better in iOS 26 as well. Apple promised an all-new Siri in iOS 18, but was forced to delay the features until iOS 26. Reports say the update will likely arrive in early 2026 as part of iOS 26.4 with three main features: Screen awareness: Siri can read and understand what's on your screen. For example, if you're reading an address, you can say, "Add this to my contacts," and Siri will understand. Personal context: Siri will use your mail, messages, web history, etc., to build a private profile of you on your device. That way, it can give you answers that are specific to you. In-app actions: Siri will be able to integrate with apps on your iPhone and work within them rather than existing as a system-level layer. However, the chat portion of Siri will be mostly the same, so ChatGPT will still be a major part of Apple Intelligence throughout 2026. Apple is reportedly working on a "true modernized, conversational version of Siri," using a homegrown large-language model, but that isn't expected to arrive until iOS 27. In addition to GPT-5 integration, Apple is adding several new Apple intelligence features to iOS 26, including live translation, call screening and spam filtering, and AI actions in Shortcuts. Apple Intelligence is supported on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 models, including the 16e. On the iPad and Mac, all M-series models are supported as well as the A17 Pro iPad mini. iOS 26 is expected to launch in September.

Apple's confirmed GPT-5 is coming to Apple Intelligence -- and sooner than expected
Here's when OpenAI's latest update will make it to Apple Intelligence OpenAI's newly-announced GPT-5 will be coming to Apple Intelligence on recent iPhones, iPads and Macs a lot quicker than you may have thought. According to a statement given to 9to5Mac's Zac Hall, Apple says that GPT-5 integration is indeed coming to Apple Intelligence, and will be available in iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26. Apple's latest iPhone, iPad and Mac OSes are currently in developer and public beta. The stable versions should appear next month alongside the expected launch of the iPhone 17 series, meaning it won't be long until users can try out the new version of ChatGPT on their favorite Apple device. Currently, ChatGPT-powered Apple Intelligence features use GPT-4o, OpenAI's last big update to its models designed to better handle speech and image inputs alongside traditional text prompts. ChatGPT integration for Apple Intelligence isn't constant, but rather appears when Apple would rather rely on the world's biggest AI chatbot for answers that its own services can't handle. This includes common AI tasks like web searches or queries about files, but also the ability to use OpenAI's tools in Apple's own features such as the iPhone 16 series' Visual Intelligence tool, or in Writing Tools to edit or generate text. These can all be used without an OpenAI account, although you can link one if you wish to make use of any subscription features you pay for. It's not clear what benefits GPT-5 will offer to Apple Intelligence users once the integration is enabled. But OpenAI is selling the new model in all sorts of ways, touting its enhanced reasoning, better coding and writing tools, a better voice mode, new personalities and, if you're a Pro subscriber, integration with Google apps. Apple Intelligence, as our recent AI Phone Face-Off proved, is lagging behind its rivals in terms of capabilities. Perhaps with the help of GPT-5, Apple can turn the tables on its Gemini-powered opponents.

iPhones, Macs, and iPads will get GPT-5 via Apple Intelligence. Here's when it happens.
GPT-5 is the newest foundational model for OpenAI's widely used ChatGPT. The popular AI chatbot will reportedly integrate directly with Apple Intelligence and Siri with the release of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26, according to a report from 9to5Mac. That means the new GPT-5 model will power many of Apple's AI tools, though users can also download the ChatGPT iOS app, as per usual. We don't have exact release dates for those OS updates just yet, but typically, they roll out around September or October of every year. (The beta versions are available now.) The new iOS, in particular, should launch around the same time as the iPhone 17 in September. And when the new iPadOS and macOS go live, GPT-5 will also be available through Apple Intelligence and Siri on MacBooks and iPads. Though, we should note, some older Apple devices don't support Apple Intelligence. As for device compatibility, Apple hasn't specified exactly which products can use GPT-5 yet, but it might be safe to assume that anything that can currently use Apple Intelligence will be just fine. For iPhones, that means you need at least an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. Mac computers should be OK as long as they have an M1 chip (or newer) inside, while the same goes for iPads. The only exception is the iPad Air, which uses a mobile chipset; you need one with an A17 Pro chip to use Apple Intelligence there. It's also not entirely apparent yet how the addition of GPT-5 to Apple Intelligence will work on a day-to-day basis. Right now, Apple Intelligence will kick Siri requests over to ChatGPT if the latter is better-suited to answer the inquiry than the former. Writing Tools are also enhanced by ChatGPT, as is the visual intelligence feature that tells you about things that appear in your camera viewfinder. It seems likely that GPT-5 will, to some extent, enhance all of these features, but just how much remains to be seen. ChatGPT also powers Microsoft's Copilot suite of AI features, and OpenAI has direct integration with both Apple and Windows.

GPT-5 is coming to Apple Intelligence soon, but it won't solve Apple's biggest AI problem
OpenAI has just released its latest GPT-5 artificial intelligence (AI) model, and it's set to bring a whole host of powerful new features to the ChatGPT chatbot. Thanks to Apple's integration of ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence, that could bring benefits to a wider set of people than merely ChatGPT users - but it also brings some serious risks to Apple. When might we see GPT-5 in Apple Intelligence? Well, news outlet 9to5Mac thinks it has the answer. The publication claims that Apple told it that GPT-5 will arrive on Apple devices with the release of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe. That's due to happen in early September, meaning there's only about a month to wait before GPT-5 is directly incorporated into Apple's products. You'll apparently be able to access GPT-5 in a few different ways on iPhones and Macs. The most obvious being when you use Siri for more complex questions that it can't answer, but also with Apple's Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, which uses your iPhone's camera to help answer questions about what you're looking at. The new features in GPT-5 include different personalities (including Cynic, Listener, Nerd, and Robot), fresh theming options, and an improved Voice Mode. Google users will also soon be able to connect their Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts accounts directly to ChatGPT. GPT-5 comes in a few different sizes, including the regular GPT-5 model, GPT-5 mini, and GPT-5 nano. These offer different levels of reasoning and are all available to free users. If you're paying $200 a month for ChatGPT Pro, you'll also get access to the deeper GPT-5 pro and GPT-5 thinking models, which take longer to respond but offer more insightful responses. While ChatGPT can be used in conjunction with Apple Intelligence, you have to specifically invoke it. Most queries to Apple's AI will use Apple Intelligence, but if there's something that Apple's model can't answer, it will ask if you want to hand off to ChatGPT. Right now, relying on ChatGPT for more in-depth queries doesn't reflect particularly well on Apple Intelligence, but there are signs that Apple is working to correct that. The company is reportedly developing its own AI chatbot to rival ChatGPT and others (despite previously telling TechRadar "that was never the goal, and it remains not our primary goal"). Unfortunately, we don't know when that chatbot will be ready, which could be why Apple is moving so swiftly to incorporate GPT-5 into Apple Intelligence: it might be an attempt to keep Apple's AI relevant while the company works on its own solution. But the longer we have to wait - and the more features OpenAI adds to ChatGPT - the higher the expectations will be on Apple's chatbot, and the harder it will be for Apple Intelligence to eventually usurp its rivals.

This Is When You Can Use ChatGPT-5 via Apple Intelligence
ChatGPT in Apple Intelligence can be used via Siri, Visual Intelligence OpenAI's GPT-5 artificial intelligence (AI) model was added to all interfaces of ChatGPT, including website, desktop, and mobile, on Thursday for all users. Additionally, the company is also releasing the models via application programming interface (API) However, these are not the only interfaces where ChatGPT is available. The chatbot is also integrated with Apple Intelligence and powers several features in the Cupertino-based tech giant's suite of AI features. As per a report, GPT-5 will soon be available via Apple Intelligence as well. ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence began with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, and later it was expanded to visionOS 2. At that time, the AI chatbot was powered by the GPT-4o AI model. Now, according to a 9to5Mac report, Apple will add support for GPT-5 with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. Notably, the publication did not mention if ChatGPT in visionOS 26 will also be upgraded to the latest model in September via an update. When Apple first announced the AI suite for its devices, ChatGPT was integrated to work with Siri to provide answers for queries that are too complicated or require reasoning capability. The chatbot could also be referred to perform certain tasks involving documents and photos. Apart from this, the company's Writing Tools also made use of ChatGPT to compose, rewrite, expand, and shorten text, as well as to generate images. Later, when the tech giant announced the Visual Intelligence feature with the iPhone 16 series, ChatGPT's computer vision was used to answer user queries about their surroundings. All of these features required explicit user consent and a message would let them know that the device was bringing the queries to OpenAI's chatbot. The addition of OpenAI's frontier AI model will also allow Apple users to leverage its enhanced capabilities and knowledge base. The San Francisco-based AI firm claims that GPT-5 has made significant improvements in writing, mathematics, coding, and health. The model also unifies reasoning capability, which means users will get to ask more complicated queries than before.
